Effective January 15th, 2012, the Powerball will undergo 2 significant changes. For one, individual tickets will increase from $1.00 to $2.00. Secondly, the minimum jackpot will increase from $20 Million to $40 Million. For example, if a $150 Million jackpot has a winning ticket, the next drawing will now be, at a minimum, for a $40 Million jackpot.

In my opinion, these tweeks will significantly boost ticket revenues.

Even without the minimum jackpot being raised, I figure the REAL money to be made at $2.00 per ticket is when the jackpot is above $100 Million. Psychologically, there seems to be an increased desire to play when we hit triple digits in millions. Just watch how much the jackpot exponentially grows after it hits $100 million and rolls over to the next drawing. Better yet, should the Powerball go up to $200 million and above, lots of $2.00 tickets will be bought and possibly at the same volume as $1.00 tickets sold.

Boldly get above $300 Million... Desperation kicks in and even those with money might consider buying 50,000 tickets to see if they can chance an incredible return on an investment.

Raising the minimum Powerball from $20 million to $40 million was incredibly smart by those who run the Powerball. Here in Ohio and West Virginia, the states are participants in BOTH the Powerball and Mega Millions drawings. Mega Millions are remaining at $1.00 per ticket... Powerball is now going to rely on the jackpot number to drive the ticket buying instead of the price alone.

Given that any lottery is 100% the choice of the Consumer to participate (look up "Regressive Tax"), I have NO problems with what Powerball is doing and in fact applaud it. It's going to drive up crazy revenue and probably boost jackpots to their highest levels ever. States that sell Powerball will enjoy the benefits as well for whatever % of the ticket sold in their state adds to the tax revenues. A higher jackpot won in a state will also see a boost in state tax revenues from taxing the prize won. Win, win.
