Friday Night SmackDown!

Friday 8/7 ET
Memphis, Tennessee

The opening montage plays and the fireworks go off as JR and Todd Grisham welcomes everyone to another exciting edition of Friday Night SmackDown!

The announcers then hype our main even for the evening as a Champion vs. Champion match between Rey Mysterio and Edge. And in other action, we will see CM Punk challenge the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga!

We then see the World Heavyweight Championship suspended above the ring and several ladders both in the ring and surrounding the ring.

Edge’s music hits and out he comes slowly staring at the ladders before grabbing a microphone to speak.

Edge welcomes everyone to a special edition of the Cutting Edge where the focus of the show is the Ladder match that is set to take place this Sunday at Extreme Rules. Edge then introduces his opponent, Jeff Hardy, as his guest.

“No More Words” hits and out comes the Charismatic Enigma, Jeff Hardy, to a massive pop. On his way down to the ring, Jeff goes under a few ladders as the announcers mention the obvious that it’s bad luck going under ladders.

Jeff climbs one of the two ladders in the ring and tells Edge that if he wishes to talk to him, then he will be at the top of the ladder waiting for him. Jeff then says that at the top of the ladder, he feels like he is at home.

Edge responds by saying that Jeff has a false bravado and further insults Jeff by saying that all he does is pander to all the sheeps (audience). Edge then adds that Jeff will attempt to climb the ladder on several occasions this Sunday, but will be devastated by a recurring theme which is that no matter how many times he climbs the ladder, Edge will be there to knock Jeff back down. And finally once Jeff is down, Edge will climb the ladder and grab the title. As Edge said all of this, he physically demonstrated it to Jeff and as a result, he is at the top of a different ladder in front of Jeff.

Jeff tells Edge that he could talk about his credentials all he wants, but he doesn’t care, because this Sunday he will make history when he beats Edge for the title. “So Edge, at Extreme Rules, living for the moment will not be my downfall, it will be my salvation!”

Edge nods his head and tells Jeff that this Sunday, he will need that salvation. Then, as Jeff takes his eyes off Edge for a tiny second, Edge grabs the World Heavyweight Championship belt (still suspended above the ring) and nails Jeff in the temple with it twice before shoving the ladder Jeff was on down. Jeff came crashing onto the ropes and fell out onto the floor as we got replays of what just occurred.

Edge then slowly made his way back up the ramp as his music played to a chord of boos from the live crowd.

The Gold Standard, Shelton Benjamin, makes his way down to the ring. His opponent is the Shaman of Sexy, John Morrison. JR adds how great these two athletes are and I completely couldn’t agree more.

Match 1: Shelton Benjamin v. John Morrison

Match begins with Morrison and Benjamin pounding on each other until the referee breaks them apart. Finally after some time, Benjamin ties up Morrison on the rope and kicks his left leg. Benjamin proceeds to connect with a shin breaker before applying a leg lock. Morrison struggles to break the hold as Benjamin then applies an inverted Figure Four Leg Lock. Afterwards, Benjamin tries to yank Morrison’s leg out of the socket, but Morrison flips up and strikes Benjamin with an ezigiri kick. As the two athletes make it back to their feet, Benjamin charges at Morrison, but Morrison manages to quickly flapjack Benjamin onto the top rope and then proceeds to get a knee strike onto Benjamin’s face. After a 2 count, Morrison tries for the springboard kick, but Benjamin ducks and grabs Morrison with a half Boston Crab. Not long after however, Morrison reverses this hold into a small package. After yet another 2 count, quickly gets back up and attempts a sidewalk slam, but Morrison turns around and strikes Benjamin down with a spinning DDT. With Benjamin down, Morrison connects with the Starship Pain for the win.

Post-Match: We get replays of the match as Morrison gets up on the ropes to celebrate.

Still to Come: Edge vs. Rey Mysterio & CM Punk vs. Umaga

Chris Jericho is shown backstage about to make his way down to the ring.

A recap of Jericho’s assault on Mysterio from last week was shown.

Pyro’s go off and it’s none other than Chris Jericho. The 2008 Superstar of the Year grabs a microphone and speaks.

Jericho tells Mysterio that in 48 hours he will be unmasked and as a result, he should be very afraid. Jericho then calls Mysterio the ultimate hypocrite before making the promise to desecrate and demolish the master of the 619. As Jericho attempts to continue, R-Truth’s music hits and Jericho doesn’t look pleased. Truth asks the entire audience “What’s Up?” and then asks Jericho, but Jericho moves the microphone away and says how dare Truth come out here and interrupt him. “You can dance and sing like a puppet and pander to these liars and these cheaters, but you will not try and upstage me on my very on show.”

Truth responds that if Jericho seeks the truth, then it is as follows, things are about to get real bad for Chris Jericho.

Match 2: Chris Jericho v. R-Truth

Match begins with Jericho taking Truth down with a shoulder-block, but it doesn’t take long for Jericho to quickly escape the ring when Truth attempts to get in some offense. With Jericho attempting to leave, Truth dives out of the ring and takes Jericho down. Afterwards, Truth gets up on the ropes, but Jericho trips Truth and dropkicks him back out of the ring. Jericho then brings Truth back in the ring and proceeds to kick him several times. Jericho even goes as far as to asking Truth, “What’s Up?” Jericho then applies a headlock, but Truth suddenly reverses it into a rollup for a 2 count. Jericho gets back up, but Truth takes him down with a clothesline and eventually strikes at Jericho with a spinning kick. As Jericho gets back up, Truth charges at him, but Jericho catches Truth with a back elbow. With Truth down, Jericho attempts the Lionsault, but Truth moves out of the way and attempts the Scissors Kick, but Jericho grabs him in position for the Walls of Jericho. Truth tries fighting out of it so Jericho switches the hold into a catapult. However, Truth lands on his feet on the middle ropes. As Truth leaps off to strike Jericho, Jericho catches Truth in midair with the Codebreaker for the win.

Post-Match: Jericho gets his hands raised and proceeds to give Truth some extra trash talking before heading to the back. However, as Jericho gets up near the stage, out comes Rey Mysterio! Mysterio puts a pounding on Jericho before flying off the stage and taking Jericho down with his signature seated senton.

A video package plays hyping the Orton/Batista Steel Cage match that is scheduled to take place at Extreme Rules.

CM Punks music hits and out comes the 2009 Money in the Bank winner to a great ovation.

The Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga, then makes his way down to the ring with the same leather strap he used to beat Punk down a few weeks ago.

Match 3: CM Punk v. Umaga

With Umaga trying to shove Punk off several times, Punk somehow manages to get by striking the thigh area of Umaga a few times. Moments later, Umaga charges at Punk, but Punk dodges him and Umaga hits the steel post pretty hard. This allows Punk to go up to the top rope and connect with a flying cross body for a 2 count.

Back, Punk has a headlock scissors applied. As Umaga tries to break the hold, Punk kicks Umaga out of the ring. Punk then attempts to splash onto the Samoan Bulldozer, but Umaga thrusts Punk in the throat area. Afterwards, Umaga hurls Punk into the barricade before throwing him back inside of the ring. After a 2 count, Umaga applies a claw hold to the torso of CM Punk. Finally, after some time, Punk gets out of the hold, but Umaga quickly takes Punk down with a massive clothesline. Then, Umaga applies a bow a modified bow-and-arrow like maneuver. Umaga releases the hold and applies a bear hug. “CM Punk!” chants emerge from the crowd. Punk elbows Umaga in the face and gets out of the hold, but Umaga quickly sidekicks Punk right back down. Umaga then teases to sit on top of Punk, but Punk kicks Umaga right in the face. With Umaga dazed, Punk connects with his springboard clothesline, but gets only a 2 count. As Umaga gets up, Punk slaps Umaga in the face and proceeds to take Umaga down with a dropkick for another 2 count. Punk lifts Umaga and charges at him, but Umaga catches Punk and drills him with a swinging side slam. 1…2…NO! Punk kicks out! Umaga then drags Punk to the corner and backs off. Umaga attempts the Samoan Wrecking Ball (hip attack), but Punk moves out of the way at the last minute causing Umaga to crash into the turnbuckle. With Umaga dazed in the corner, Punk strikes Umaga with the knee lift, but Umaga shoves Punk down. Umaga then grabs the strap off the turnbuckle, but the referee tells Umaga not to use it. Punk comes up from behind and delivers the GTS for the win!

Post-Match: The crowd is absolutely in frenzy! Punk heads back up the ramp and holds his briefcase up in victory.

Still to Come: Edge vs. Rey Mysterio

WWE Did You Know? Last Friday, among males under 55, SmackDown! was the #1 Entertainment Show on cable and broadcast television.

Back, in the ring, Todd Grisham and JR go over the Extreme Rules card.

Justin Roberts then introduces our special guest referee for our next bout, Maria!

Melina, Gail Kim, and Eve Torres are then introduced to Melina’s music.

Following that, Michelle McCool, Alicia Foxx, and Layla introduced to McCool’s music.

Match 4: Melina, Gail Kim, & Eve Torres v. Michelle McCool, Alicia Foxx, & Layla

Match starts off with Foxx and Torres. Foxx applies an early wristlock, but Torres quickly sweeps the leg of Foxx and proceeds to tag in Gail Kim. Foxx tries to boast, but Kim quickly takes her down with a standing hurricanrana. Not long after, Kim goes up to the top rope and connects with a flying cross body on Foxx for a 2 count. Kim then Irish Whips Foxx, but McCool gets the blind tag and eventually connects with the over-head powerbomb. Melina and Layla checked in. Melina hit her signature moves on Layla. She also performed the Matrix and a sketchy looking kick from the Matrix position. However, McCool kicked the back of Melina's head while Maria was distracted, and Layla scored the surprise pin on Melina.

Post-Match: The heels celebrate as we cut to the replays.

JR and Grisham go over the Extreme Rules card.

The Great Khali and Runjin Singh enter the arena. Khali's opponent is Dolph Ziggler.

Match 5: Great Khali v. Dolph Ziggler

Bell rings and Ziggler tries to corner the Punjabi Playboy. However, Khali shoves Ziggler away and eventually takes him down with a massive clothesline. Following this, Khali delivers several back elbow shots to the head of Ziggler before striking with him with a thunderous chop. As Khali attempts to grab Ziggler, Ziggler escapes onto the outside and Khali follows. Khali tries for a giant slap, but Ziggler ducks and Khali's hand hits the steel post. Back in the ring, Ziggler catches Khali with a dropkick and a flurry of punches. Khali however over powers his way through and drills Ziggler with the Punjabi Plunge for the win.

Post-Match: Khali and Runjin Singh celebrate.

Up Next: Edge vs. Rey Mysterio!

-Commercial-

Justin Roberts recognized Koko B. Ware at ringside.

Rey Mysterio makes his way down to the ring to a nice ovation.

Edge then follows...

Main Event: Rey Mysterio v. Edge

Bell rings and after a series of reversals from both men, Edge catches Mysterio with a reverse back elbow. Edge then corners the Master of the 619 and strikes at him in the corner with multiple kicks. Mysterio tries to fight back, but Edge throws Mysterio out of the ring, but Mysteri somehow manages to land on his feet! As Mysterio turns around, Edge connects with a nice baseball slide!

-Comemercial-

Back, we see Mysterio in charge as he attempts the 10 punches in the corner. Mysterio then jumps off and tries for an Irish Whip, but he eventually gets thrown into the steel post, shoulder first! Great fast-paced action back inside the ring after the break with both wrestlers trading near falls. Ross said he asked Rey if he's ever been in a match with someone smaller than he is. He said Rey told him no. "619" chants emerge and finally after taking a beating, Mysterio comes out of nowhere and takes Edge down with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors.

-Commercial-

Back, Edge is in firm control as he applies a full nelson hold. After kicking Edge out of the manuever, Mysterio delivers a nice facebuster! Mysterio scored additional near falls that were convincing enough that the live crowd counted along with the referee. He went for a springboard move off the ropes, but Edge caught him and locked in a Sharpshooter. Rey broke the hold by grabbing the bottom rope. Later, Rey went for the 619, but Edge caught him. Rey came back with a schoolboy for another strong near fall. In the end, Rey came back and hit the 619. He tried to follow up with with a springboard splash, but Edge dodged it and caught Mysterio with the Spear! 1...2...3! Edge wins.

Post-Math: Edge went out and pulled a ladder out from underneath the ring. Edge slid the ladder inside the ring and picked it up to hit Rey with it, but Jeff Hardy ran out carrying a chair and slammed the chair onto the ladder. Jeff hit the Twist of Fate on Edge. He set up the ladder and then climbed the ropes. Jeff leapfrogged the ladder and then came down with a legdrop onto Edge. Jeff climbed the ladder and raised the World Heavyweight Championship to end the show.

Smack of the Night: Edge vs. Rey Mysterio

Tonight’s show was really enjoyable! Wrestling Heavy as SmackDown! usually is. I'm sure this show probably even sold a few more PPV's for this Sunday. Sorry about having no commentary on my behalf tonight as I am loaded with other work. Final Rating: 8.5/10
