SmackDown! Report (05/22/09): Extreme Choice

[Q1]A video recapped the Hardy/Edge match at Judgment Day…The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Jim Ross and Todd Grisham welcomed us to Smackdown. They hyped the Jericho/Punk rematch for later…

Edge was introduced and he made his way to the ring. He said if there was any doubt about who the face of Smackdown is, its time to end the debate. He said Judgment Day proved he was the face of the brand. He pointed out Jericho, Punk, and of course Jeff Hardy all lost at Judgment Day. He ran Jeff and the fans to the dogs and called them losers. Teddy Long’s music hit and he came to the ring. He said what he witnessed at Judgment Day was an atrocity. He said he couldn’t overturn the referee’s decision, but he can’t deny that Matt Hardy interfered. So he added Edge defending against Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules.

Edge cried that it wasn’t fair. He went over how he was better than Hardy. He said he went back to the vault of a million holds he had mastered and pulled out the top rope Edgecution. He said Jeff was not the champ, he was a loser. Jeff Hardy’s music hit and I hope they were piping those cheers in because the pop was off the charts when he walked out. He agreed he was a loser, but said he was also a competitor. He said Edge and he should have a match tonight to determine what type of match they should have. Edge said Jeff couldn’t make matches. Jeff pointed out that Teddy said the show belongs to the WWE Universe. Teddy agreed. Jeff went into the crowd and asked five or six individual fans if they wanted to see the match. He then asked the whole crowd and they said seemed to be behind it. Teddy made it official and then said, “Now say holla, holla, holla.” Jeff and the crowd did it. Edge looked pissed into commercial…[C]

[Q2]Back from commercial, the announce team hyped the Edge/Hardy match for later…Shelton Benjamin’s music hit and he, Charlie Haas, and Ricky Ortiz came out together. My 10 year old said, “Look, here comes a gang.” Hilarious. John Morrison was out next, followed by Cryme Tyme…

1. John Morrison and Cryme Tyme defeated Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, and Ricky Ortiz at 10:25. Benjamin and Morrison started out, but Benjamin tagged in Ortiz before any action. Ortiz locked up with Morrison and worked power. Morrison moved as Ortiz ran into the corner and hit a hip toss and tagged in Shad. Shad hit a huge back drop and body slam in the corner. He tagged in JTG. JTG hooked his legs on Shad’s shoulders, tagged in Morrison, and then let Shad slam him on Ortiz. Morrison came in and hit his pommel horse leg drop for two.

JTG tagged back in and hit a sunset flip for two. Ortiz tagged in Haas who sent JTG to the floor. He landed on his feet and ran back in and spilled Haas to the floor. The faces cleared the heels and stared them down into commercial…[C]

Back at 5:49, Benjamin was stomping on JTG. A video showed how Benjamin distracted JTG during the commercial, allowing Haas to take control. Haas tagged back in and locked in an arm bar. JTG fought out, but Haas dropped him by the hair. Ortiz tagged back in. He hit several strikes and a neat hammer lock slam for two. He locked in the arm bar again. Benjamin tagged back in and worked JTG in the corner. JTG punched his way out and tried for a tag, but Benjamin pulled him back. JTG kicked away and made the weakest tag ever. Morrison ran in and attacked Haas who Benjamin had tagged in.

[Q3]Everybody came in. Shad ran through a double clothesline attempt and tried to double clothesline Ortiz and Benjamin. Ortiz got leveled, Benjamin ducked. JTG hit a botched splash on Benjamin to send them both to the floor. Alone in the ring, Haas tried a belly to back on Morrison who landed on his feet. He hit a hot shot on Haas and followed it up with Starship Pain for the win. Morrison and Cryme Tyme celebrated in the ring to a good pop…

Backstage, Josh Matthews introduced Melina. He asked her about the Gail Kim/Michelle McCool number one contenders match. She put herself over as the best in the world. She said she didn’t care who won the match. Alicia Fox came out and called Melina a cupcake. Alicia said McCool said the Women’s Championship would soon be hers. Melina said to tell McCool never to send a girl to do a woman’s work. She bitch slapped Alicia and made weird faces at her into the break…[C]

The Denver Debacle video was shown…The announce team hyped the special Raw next week…Michelle McCool made her entrance with Alicia Fox. Fox was still selling the slap. Gail Kim was out next…

2. Michelle McCool w/Alicia Fox defeated Gail Kim to become the number one contender to the Women’s Championship at 4:25. Kim locked in a crucifix and spun down to hip toss McCool to the floor. Kim went out after her and McCool mashed Kim’s leg into the post. McCool sent her back in and worked on the leg. Kim locked in the Flying Dragon submission move on McCool. McCool dropped to her knees and made the ropes. She slid out of the ring and drug Kim to the floor face first. She tried to bring Kim back in, but she dropped McCool’s arm on the top rope.

Kim tried to Hulk up, but McCool kicked her. Kim kicked back and hit a cool twisted arm neckbreaker for two. Kim went to the apron and Fox grabbed her. Kim kicked Fox into the post and went to the top. McCool kicked her feet out and hit the Faith Breaker for the win…Rey Mysterio was shown backstage getting wired for an interview…[C]

[Q4]Back from commercial, a video hyped Flair calling out Orton next week. The announce team interviewed Rey who was backstage. Rey put over Jericho as talented in the ring and talented with running his mouth. He said he was happy to beat Jericho, but he was more happy to hit the move Jericho said he wouldn’t the 619. He had the crowd chant 619. He said he was moving on and wanted to allow the young guys a chance to win the Intercontinental Title. He put over previous Latino holders of the title, including Eddie Guerrero. He said he hoped that one day he would be considered one of the greats.

JR asked why Rey wore a mask in the ring. He said it was because he was an ugly dude. He said he was kidding and put over the luchadore traditions. He said he would never take the mask off in the ring. He said without it, he wasn’t Rey Mysterio…Jericho’s music hit and he came to the ring. He stood in the ring and looked at the crowd into the break…[C]

Back from commercial, Jericho was still in the ring. A video recapped the end of the match from Superstars. Punk was out next…

[Q5]3. CM Punk defeated Chris Jericho by disqualification at 11:36. Punk started out in control with a kick to the back, a body slam, and a stomp to cover for one. Punk picked up Jericho for GTS. Jericho hit several elbows and slipped out. He took control and locked in a chin lock. Punk hip tossed out and then hit several kicks in the corner. He whipped Jericho to the corner and charged in for the knee, but Jericho flipped him over the top. Punk landed on the apron and punched Jericho. He tried for a springboard move, but Jericho dropkicked the rope at the same time, spilling Punk to the mat. Both men recovered into the break…[C]

Back at the 7:17 mark, Punk whipped Jericho into the ropes who grabbed them, causing Punk to miss a drop kick. Jericho hit a butt splash for two. Jericho set Punk on the top and attempted a superplex. Punk knocked Jericho down and hit a cross body. Jericho rolled through for two. Punk rolled up Jericho for two. Punk setup GTS and they pulled the same reversals from last night except Jericho kicked out and locked in Walls of Jericho. Punk made it to the rope. Jericho hit the opposite rope and Punk scooped him up and hit GTS. Jericho rolled to the floor.

Umaga ran in with a strap and caused the DQ. Umaga destroyed Punk and then tied him in the corner with the strap. He hit the Samoan Spike and went and got a mic. Umaga said, “You think you’re hurt now, wait till Extreme Rules.” He challenged Punk to a Samoan Strap match and attacked Punk again. He finished by hitting Punk with the strap. His music hit and he left the ring. A video replayed the end of the match…JR hyped the 10 man tag match and the McMahon/Kroenke showdown coming to Raw…[C]

[Q6]A video recapped the Ziggler/Khali “feud.” Ziggler made his ring entrance followed by R-Truth’s long ass entrance…

4. Dolph Ziggler defeated R-Truth at 2:28. A ton of rope running to start off. Ziggler hit a hot shot on Truth in the corner, followed by a front take down. He locked in a chinlock. The announce team put over how a lot of people were talking about what Ziggler did to Khali. Ziggler hit a kick and said, “That’s what’s up.” Truth hit a scissor kick and covered for two. Truth went to the top, but Ziggler drug him off from behind. He hit his jumping neckbreraker finisher for the win. Ziggler celebrated up the ramp. When he reached the stage, Khali’s music hit and he came out. Ziggler ran back to the ring and Truth hit his Corkscrew Elbow. Khali went after Ziggler who rolled out of the ring and escaped through the crowd…[C]

[Q7]A video recapped the Layla/Eve feud over the past three weeks. The announce team hyped their match for next week…Backstage, Edge told Teddy Long to be careful what he wished for because after he beat Jeff tonight, the extreme rules match would be the end of Jeff Hardy. He walked off as Jericho walked up. Jericho said, “Edge.” Edge said, “That’s champ to you, the face of Smackdown.” Jericho demanded a match at Extreme Rules against Rey Mysterio. Long said that Rey had just left and it was a done deal. He said the match would be a No Holds Barred match. Jericho smiled and congratulated Long for getting something right…Jeff Hardy made his entrance…[C]

5. Jeff Hardy defeated Edge with the winner picking the type of match at Extreme Rules at 15:39. Quick back and forth to start. Edge keeps trying to attack the head as the announce team pointed out. Jeff managed to lock in the headlock from hell, holding on through a belly to back suplex. The crowd chanted Hardy’s name. Edge managed to fight out and punch Jeff in the head. Jeff sold the head injury, but went back on the attack. He hit the mule kick in the corner, but landed on his head, causing him to struggle to his feet.

[Q8]Hardy slowly made his feet and Edge hit a big boot. Hardy was out cold and Edge paced around him into the break…[C]

Back at 8:03, edge was still attacking Hardy’s head. He dropped about 100 knee drops in a row on Hardy. He hung Hardy’s head over the apron and hit a straight kick. Hardy spilled to the floor. Edge went and got him and put him back in the ring, he covered for two. Edge whipped Hardy to the corner and charged in. Hardy blocked him, hit two feet on another charge, and then hit Whisper in the Wind for two. Hardy went on the attack, hitting a flying clothesline and a sit down front suplex. Hardy went to the top, but Edge rolled away. Hardy went after him and tried to hit his double leg drop on the “midsection,” but Edge blocked it, causing Jeff to hit his head again.

Edge teed off on Hardy a few times. He tried for a move off the second rope, but Jeff kicked him out of the air. Jeff hit a baseball slide that sent Edge to the floor. Hardy followed up with a plancha on Edge on the floor. Back in the ring, Hardy hit a slam and then a leg drop from the second rope for two. He teased the Twist of Fate, but Edge pushed him off. Edge tried for a spear, but Jeff hit a Sunset Flip for two. Hardy tried for the Twist of Fate again, but Edge countered into a backslide for two. Edge tried for the Impaler, but Hardy reversed into a Twist of Fate. He went to the top, but Edge stopped him. Edge tried for the second rope Edgecution, but Jeff punched him off the ropes and hit the Swanton for the win…

Todd Grisham got in the ring and asked Jeff what the match would be. Jeff said, “At Extreme Rules I won’t be painting, I won’t be cleaning gutters, I won’t be changing light bulbs. What I will be doing is climbing a ladder to become the World Heavyweight Champion.” Todd Grisham restated the match would be a ladder match as Edge looked upset. Edge backed up the ramp as Hardy celebrated in the ring to end the show…
