Three big matches on fight night tonight... First up...
Non-Title Singles Match: Samoa Joe (nXt Champion) vs. Rhyno
The two wrestlers circle one another. Samoa Joe pushes Rhyno towards the ropes and they run into one another. Joe taunts Rhyno to try and knock him down. Rhyno tries once and can’t do it. On the second time, he clotheslines Joe to the mat. Into the corner, Rhyno lays into Joe with punches and chops. Joe fights back with a few of his own but it’s not enough to prevent Rhyno from throwing him into another corner after a shot to the mid-section. He tries to whip him to the opposite corner but Joe reverses it and hits Rhyno with an enziguri on the other side.
Joe asks Rhyno to get up, helps him to it, and then begins with repeated jabs to the head. He slams Rhyno’s head into the turnbuckle but delays in following it up. Rhyno tries to punish him for it, but when he runs the ropes, Joe blocks him with the shoulder and pins him for a 2 count.
Joe and Rhyno trade chops and punches as the tempo slows. Joe chucks Rhyno into the turnbuckle, sending him to the mat, clutching his head. Snapmare, slap to the back and kick to the chest. Elbow drop and a 2 count pinfall attempt. Joe pinches a nerve in Rhyno’s neck, keeping him on the mat for a good 30 seconds. Rhyno fights out of it with elbows. He takes an atomic drop and a big boot from Joe but he’s able to roll out of the way of a senton splash attempt from the champ.
Rhyno and Joe trade punches again. Rhyno sends Joe off the ropes and is taken down not once but twice. Rhyno with the belly to belly suplex! He sets up in the opposite corner from Joe for a gore. He charges but Joe boots him in the face and begins slapping Rhyno’s chest. Rhyno pushes him away and charges into a spike slam. Joe seizes him for the Coquina Clutch and this one is over!
Winner: Samoa Joe via submission in 7 minutes
One cool point for Joe taking care of business with the Coquina Clutch! It’s such an effective submission that he can use out of nowhere...he should use it more often. I thought Rhyno would put up more of a fight. For him to lose so quickly makes it feel like the match was just a one-off, but, then again, he should be able to defend against the Clutch since he knows Joe so well.
Backstage, nXt interviewer Andrea D’Marco asks Asuka who she’d rather defend her Women’s Championship against: Bayley or Nia Jax? Asuka says she’s fought each of them and she’ll fight both if she has to.
Coming Up: American Alpha vs. Authors of Pain
Recap: We see video footage from last night’s Smackdown Live and the nXt connection to the WWE draft. The wrestlers who will move up from nXt to Raw or Smackdown Live are: Finn Balor, American Alpha, Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Mojo Rawley and Carmella
Tag Team Match: American Alpha vs. Authors of Pain
As Jordan and Gable are walking down the ramp, they are attacked by the Authors of Pain. Medical staff immediately attend to Jordan and Gable just off the ramp. As this is happening, manager Paul Ellering walks out and nods to his team before joining them at ringside. They enter the ring and look out menacingly at the crowd as...
We go to commercial.
On the return, Graves and Phillips speculate on if the match will happen. A few minutes later, Jordan and Gable leave the company of the medical staff and run to the ring to fight the Authors of Pain. They bring a referee to start the match and, after a brief tussle, throw both of their opponents over the top ropes.
Finally, the match begins--- Author #1 with a shaved and low cut, and quite bulky, facing
Jason Jordan. Jordan brings him to their corner with shoulder thrusts. Gable follows up with the same after a tag. Another set of quick tags results in a double Northern Lights suplex. Just a 1 count. Author #1 is tagged by Author #2 and the two set Gable up for a bear hug, followed by a stiff clothesline. Author #2 holds Gable in a bear hug for a minute or so. Gable tries to run free and is speared back into the opponent’s corner. Author #2 stomps on Gable before tagging in his partner. Author #1 continues breaking down Gable’s endurance with a bearhug. Gable tries to escape once with an attempted roll-up. He gets to Jordan after a diving roll and tag is successful. Right hands to both Authors. A clothesline to Author #1. Overhead belly to belly suplex to Author #2. Huge reverse side suplex to Author #1 for only a 1 count.
Jordan slowly brings Author #1 to his feet. He runs the ropes and gets lifted up and over his opponent on to the ropes. Gable takes exception to this and somehow executes a back suplex. 1-2-kick out! Off the ropes, Gable ducks a clothesline, gets caught upside down and Author #2 enters, bounces off the ropes and is TRIPPED by Jordan. The distraction is enough for Gable to roll out of Author #1’s hands and apply the ankle lock. Author #2 holds Author #1’s arms and drags him under the ropes. Just as he does this, Jordan launches himself over the ropes, delivering a plancha to the two of them. Gable runs the ropes, attempting a baseball slide out of the ring. Author #1 catches him and sends him head-first into the LED board. Jordan runs for him. He sidesteps and sends Jordan’s head into the steel steps.
He drags Gable back into the ring, securing Gable’s leg in place with his leg and allowing Author #2 to run the ropes and clothesline him powerfully to the mat. 1-2-3. This new team has beaten the former nXt Tag Team Champs.
Winner: Authors of Pain via pinfall in 7 minutes
Post-match, Paul Ellering stands in the ring, between his tag team, hands folded together satisfactorily.
Two cool points for Authors of Pain getting the win in their first high-profile match. They were rather immovable, even when they were receiving suplexes from Jason Jordan. To only accept a 1 count from this shows how tough a team they will be to beat. Their path of destruction will take them to a title match soon enough, if that is their desire. Manager Paul Ellering still hasn’t let on what their end game is, and with American Alpha being drafted to Smackdown Live, this initial feud is likely over.
Backstage, Cathy Kelley is with nXt Tag Team Champions, The Revival. She refers to the brutal 2 out of 3 falls match with American Alpha. What’s next though?
Dash & Dawson tell us how they shattered the spirits of American Alpha. Call them Lebron and Kyrie cause they are underdogs who came back to win. What’s next? There’s no tag team that can or will beat them.
Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa are on the other side of the camera. Gargano says they already did beat them. Ciampa says all they haven’t done is hold the nXt tag titles. “Tick tock”, says Johnny.
Coming Up: Bayley vs. Nia Jax
Promo: Hideo Itami returns in 2 weeks!
Singles Match: Austin Aries vs. Patrick Clark
A recap of Aries’ treatment of No Way Jose is shown from last month.
Clark and Aries lock up and it’s Aries with arm twists and elbows. Clark tumbles his way into a counter and brings Aries to the mat with an armlock. It doesn’t last. Before long, Aries is stomping and punching Clark in the corner. Huge running dropkick to Clark’s head. Clark moves to the apron and when Aries approaches, he punches him away. He leaps to the top rope and jumps right into a discus forearm.
Aries lifts Clark up and flips him over to slam him face first on the mat. He easily transitions into the Last Chancery submission for the victory!
Winner: Austin Aries via pinfall in 4 minutes
Post-match, No Way Jose arrives on the scene to beat up on Aries. He punches him all the way to the ramp and the two continue to fight there. Jose pushes Aries into the apron and continues to punch him at ringside until Aries runs off backstage.
One cool point for Aries' quick work of Clark. Loved the discus forearm off that high jumping offensive attempt by Clark. Also, good to see No Way Jose fighting back. That establishes this feud for the next month. Perhaps it will culminate at the August Takeover.
Singles Match: Bayley vs. Nia Jax
Jax charges at Bayley and the former champion evades her. On the second charge, Bayley grabs hold of the arm briefly and the two reset. Bayley goes for the left leg this time and Jax shoves her off. Bayley applies a side headlock which she is able to maintain to the corner and out of it until Jax frees herself. When Jax applies a wristhold, Bayley steps through the ropes and then back through to reverse the hold and execute one of her own. She yanks on it a few times, attacking the left arm. She’s thrown into the corner, leaps up over Jax and then mounts her in the corner for some punches.
Jax places Bayley on the top rope but nothing comes of it. Bayley tries to leap over Jax again when she’s thrown in the corner. Jax catches her and throws her head first on to the turnbuckle. She then calls her a loser and chucks her into the middle rope and out of the ring. The referee begins the count...he almost gets to 4 when Bayley dives in, only to get hit back down by Jax.
Jax uses the top rope to choke Bayley until the referee breaks it. Jax is firmly in control with Bayley at her feet. Elbow drops x2. She misses the third! Jax shoves Bayley into the corner and shoulder thrusts her. Grabbing her by the hair, she dishes out a headbutt. She repeats the sequence again. Bayley fights back with right hands and shoves Jax’s head into the turnbuckle multiple times. Big forearm by Bayley and she is mounting a comeback here, but she gives Jax too much space and Jax retorts by throwing Bayley to the mat and out of the ring...
We go to commercial.
On the return, Jax is choking Bayley in between the ropes and the referee calls on her to break the hold. Still, Bayley is fighting back when Jax gives her enough space, except for that last sequence when Jax powerslammed her. Bayley elbows her way out of a weak submission hold on the upper body. Bayley’s fired up, splashing Jax in the corner. She goes for a flying crossbody and receives a backbreaker for her efforts. 1-2..kickout. Jax
tosses Bayley out of the ring.
The referee counts to 9 before Bayley is able to roll in. Jax grabs Bayley by the hair and tries to toss her out of the ring but Bayley reverses it, throwing Jax out of the ring! Bayley, on the apron, with a flying clothesline. The crowd is getting behind her with chants and claps. Just then, Jax knees her in the gut, lines her up and tries to knee her in the face. Bayley escapes and Jax knees the steel steps instead. The referee counts all the way to 9 before Jax stands up on the apron to receive a neckbreaker on the second rope. As she’s hung up on the top rope, Bayley dropkicks her. Now she’s doing her trademark spears in the corner but Jax knees her in the stomach to stop the onslaught.
She goes for a spear of her own and Bayley escapes, allowing Jax a free pass into the ringpost. Bayley climbs to the top and executes the flying crossbody! 1-2...kickout! Bayley wraps her arms around Jax but Jax lifts up Bayley for a powerbomb. Bayley is stuck on top of her shoulders briefly but then does a victory roll for a 2 count. Off the ropes, Jax runs into Bayley hard. She lifts Bayley up for a suplex and then jackhammers her! 1-2- Bayley kicks out! Jax can’t believe it. She runs the ropes and feigns going for the leg drop. She drags Bayley over to the corner, ascends to the second rope and Bayley quickly climbs up! Bayley to Belly Superplex! 1-2-3!
Winner: Bayley via pinfall in 13 minutes
Two cool points to Bayley for her continued and persistent fight tonight. She endured a lot of punishment from Jax but she always dug down and found an answer, countering moves or punching back or attacking with a burst of speed. Jax gave Bayley too much time in between her moves, with which Bayley used to recover and attack back. One cool point for Nia Jax’s performance tonight, looking much more confident and collected than ever before and another cool point for her being drafted to Raw. Sure, she didn’t get the win but Bayley’s return from injury established a little more motivation for her. Alongside strong crowd support, Bayley had momentum all throughout that match and Jax never could quite stop Bayley.
So, did WWE bring up the wrong woman? Should it have been Bayley or do you see a space for Nia Jax in the Raw Women’s Division?
Looking forward to your cool point suggestions on tonight’s episode and the nXt callups.
