UFC 99: The Comeback Franklin v. Silva

Welterweight Bout
Dan Hardy (21-6, 1NC) v. Marcus Davis (21-5)
Referee: Marc Goddard


Round 1 -
Davis works early and gets Hardy against the cage. Davis continues to attempt a take down but Hardy defends. Davis is able to make contact with many solid shots to the face and body of Hardy before taking him down into a full guard. Marcus passes while working ground and pound, takes Hardy’s back and goes for a rear naked choke but Hardy keeps a good defense. Davis pulls Hardy up to his knees and delivers multiple shots to the side of the head. Davis passes again and goes for a guillotine but Hardy stands Davis back up against the cage. Hardy lands an elbow, right, left and knee combination. Davis pulls Hardy back against the cage, gets a take down and they quickly stand back up to end the round.

Round 1 Score – Davis 10 | Hardy 9

Round 2 -
Both men trade kicks, Davis goes for a Superman punch but Hardy pushes him back. Davis lands a body shot and Hardy hits a right hand. Double left hands connect with Hardy’s face then both men stand and bang. Davis swings wild, bends and Hardy hits a brutal knee to the face rocking Davis. Hardy attempts the finish but gets pulled into Davis’ full guard. Davis locks in an arm bar, doesn’t roll and allows Hardy to pull out. Hardy stays in Davis’ full guard; works the body and Davis lands a few shots from the bottom. Marc Goddard stands them up, big left hand by Davis but Hardy answers. Davis shoots in and takes Hardy down to work his guard as the round comes to an end.

Round 2 Score – Hardy 10 | Davis 9

Round 3 -
Davis starts the round with an impressive left hand that drops Hardy. Davis goes to his knees for ground and pound but Hardy pulls him into his guard. They work the guard until Davis rolls through and goes for a leg lock and heel hook. Hardy pulls out of the submission and stands up. They work against the cage and Hardy pulls Davis down to the ground. Big elbow from Hardy on the top splits Davis open and the referee stops the fight to check his condition. Davis is fine and they resume the ground position. Hardy works the full guard and Davis tries to work his way back up. Goddard stands them back up and Davis wipes the blood from his eyes and Hardy works a few more shots to end the round.

Round 3 Score – Hardy 10 | Davis 9

Winner via Split Decision: Dan Hardy

Lightweight Bout -
Caol Uno (25-11-4) v. Spencer Fisher (23-4)
Referee: Mario Yamasaki
Round 1 -
The fighters dance around for a minute before Uno shoots for the take down and work Fisher for a second before standing back up. Fisher works Uno against the cage, lands some knees and a head butt. Uno stuffs the take down attempt and spins Fisher around to a defensive position against the cage. Uno fakes a kick with a heavy stomp and Fisher responds with a kick check that wasn’t there. Fisher lands a couple shots before Uno pushes him against the fence to end the round.

Round 1 Score – Fisher 10 | Uno 9

Round 2 -
Uno takes Fisher down immediately and attempts a ground and pound but Fisher stands back up. Uno tries to keep control, Fisher scrambles around a lot but Uno keeps a hold of him. Coming off the cage both men land multiple shots but no real damage. Fisher sweeps Uno down but Uno stays on top. They continue to work close clenches, working knees and attempted throws but they stay safe until the round ends.

Round 2 Score – Uno 9 | Fisher 9

Round 3 -
Uno comes out aggressive and lands some shots, takes Fisher down against the cage and works his arms. Standing up against the cage and they continue to stalemate with Yamasaki warning them of a break up. The referee breaks them up, Uno goes for a kick and falls down. Fisher moves in, Uno almost pulls him into an arm bar but Fisher gets away. Fisher lands a right hook but Uno pulls him into a guard. They roll for a moment before standing back up against the cage. Fisher lands a few shots and Uno answers with one as well. Uno pulls leverage and puts Fisher down, takes top control and hits a few punches. Ground and pound by Uno, rolls into a rear naked but Fisher immediately pulls out to end the round.

Round 3 Score – Uno 10 | Fisher 9

Winner by Unanimous Decision: Spencer Fisher

Welterweight Bout -
Ben Saunders (7-0-2) v. Mike Swick (19-2)
Referee: Leon Roberts


Round 1 -
Saunders shoots in immediately but Swick pulls him to the mat. Saunders tries to control the body but Swick keeps himself pulled in. Saunders continues to try and work Swick’s body but Swick stays on top and attempts more control. Quick body kick by Saunders, Swick shoots in and lands multiple shots. Saunders works a take down against the cage but Swick defends. Swick hits a few knees to the leg and switches Saunders around. Saunders rolls Swick to end the round.

Round 1 Score – Swick 10 | Saunders 9

Round 2 -
Saunders goes in with multiple high knees but no real damage being done. Swick gets a take down, immediately moves to mount and Saunders pulls a hip escape. Swick gets caught in a butterfly guard and doesn’t do much damage from the top. The referee stands them up and Swick goes for a head kick but misses. They go into a clench and both hit a knee before breaking apart. Inside leg kick by Swick makes Saunders defend in a turtle position. Swick shoots in and annihilates Saunders with a hurricane of blows to end the fight.

Winner via TKO (strikes) @ 3:47 of Round 2: Mike “Quick” Swick

Heavyweight Bout
Mostapha Al-Turk (6-4) v. Mirko Cro Cop (24-6-2, 1 NC)
Referee: Dan Miragliotta


Round 1 -
Both men come out swinging; Turk hits a couple of right hands and attempts a high kick but misses. Turk keeps throwing haymakers in hopes of catching Cro Cop. Crop Cop defends well and telegraphs most of Turk’s shots. Straight left catches Turk’s jaw. Cro Cop moves in, hits multiple lefts, knocks Turk down but lets him stand back up. Cro Cop catches Turk’s eye, lands a few more shots and wins the fight.

Heavyweight Bout
Cheick Kongo (24-4-1) v. Cain Velasquez (5-0)
Referee: Dan Miragliotta


Round 1 -
Kongo comes out stiff with a few straight lefts then a right hook. Cain recovers and takes Kongo down. Kongo hits a few elbows to the head while they’re down. Sprawling around Cain keeps control and takes Kongo’s back. Cain picks Kongo up and drops him into side control. Cain passes through into a mount, takes his back and sinks in a rear naked. Kongo rolls out of the choke and gives his back up again. Kongo stands up; Cain picks him back up and slams him back down to side control. They continue to sprawl and Cain lands multiple rights to Kongo’s face. Kongo stands up once more and Cain slams him right back down into another side control. Cain keeps dominance to end the round.

Round 1 Score – Cain 10 | Kongo 8

Round 2 -
Cain pushes forward, nails a few shots and Kongo hits a dynamite punch that drops Cain. Cain fights back and stands back up against the cage. Cain slams Kongo back down and keeps complete control with multiple shots to the head. Kongo gets back up and Cain slams him right back down. Up on the knees Cain lands multiple knees into Kongo’s sides. Cain passes back into side control and keeps pounding Kongo to end the round.

Round 2 Score – Cain 10 | Kongo 8

Round 3 -
Kongo comes out strong once more and hits dynamite punches, takes Cain down and gives up his back. Cain reigns down a barrage of hammer fists and knees to completely decimate Kongo on the ground. Kongo stands back up, gains control of Cain and hits multiple upward knees, pushes forward and lands a few blows but gets pummeled in side control. Cain switches side control, more hammer fists and more punches. Kongo attempts a slight fight back with some punches but Cain dominates from the full mount to end the round.

Round 3 Score – Cain 10 | Kongo 9

Winner via Unanimous Decision: Cain Velasquez

Catchweight (195lb) Bout
Wanderlei Silva (32-9-1, 1NC) v. Rich Franklin (26-4, 1NC)
Referee: Mario Yamasaki


Round 1 -
A lot of dancing to begin the round before Franklin breaks the silence by leaning in with a left. Silva right a leg kick and Franklin nails another left. Franklin baits Silva and lands a combo. Silva with a heavy, wild overhand right but Franklin checks it. High kick by Silva barely misses Franklin’s head. Franklin shoots a body kick; Silva catches it and takes him down into a full guard. Franklin tries to score points by passing and rolling through Silva. Silva scrambles, eats multiple shots and stands up. The end of the round comes with a few punches and a body kick by Franklin.

Round 1 Score – Franklin 10 | Silva 9

Round 2 -
Franklin continues throwing kicks at Silva but Silva proceeds to check them. Right hook and body kick by Franklin answered by a quick flurry from Silva. Quick, stiff inside leg kick from Franklin. Silva throws a slightly off balance right that barely misses Franklin. Silva shoots in for a punch, misses and Franklin rocks him with a right jab. Left hook by Franklin catches Silva. Franklin maneuvers around a combination from Silva, hits a body kick and eats a few punches. Overhead right hand lands Franklin twice from a missed right body kick. They move against the cage, both fighters with a flurry of blows. Franklin misses a high kick and lands on the mat. He quickly recovers, eats a punch and backs up to end the round.
Round 2 Score – Franklin 10 | Silva 9

Round 3 -
They stand toe-to-toe and bang with multiple combinations; Silva getting the better end of the deal. Franklin goes for an inside leg kick and catches Silva’s cup; only a few seconds of stoppage before the fight resumes. Up against the cage both men land blows, Silva with a rising knee and he hypes the crowd. Franklin is still dropping his left hand on his right body kick and almost catches a few more right hands. They move in on one another, up against the cage and land blows on each other. Down on the ground for a split second but back up, back elbows by Silva and massive punches to the side of Silva’s head to end the round.

Round 3 Score – Franklin 10 | Silva 9

Winner via Unanimous Decision: Rich “Ace” Franklin

Hathaway defeated Story via unanimous decision.

Struve defeated Stojnić via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:37 of round 2.

Kelly defeated Delgado via unanimous decision.
Welterweight bout: Paul Taylor vs. Peter Sobotta
Taylor defeated Sobotta via unanimous decision.

Siver defeated Hartt via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:23 of round 1.
