Chyna on Larry King recap, Konnan & Thatcher on Chairshots, and more
Submitted by Calvin Martin on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at 4:49 PM EST

There are rumors going around that all of the shooting that the Honky Tonk Man has been doing on his website lately is in hopes of a match between he and Lawler at indy shows.

Big Bossman is going to become a road agent for the WWF soon.

No updates on Eddie Guerrero. He is still in rehab.

Bill Simmons, a.k.a. Sports Guy on Espn.com's Page 2, lists his 5
favorite wrestlers of all time. It can be found about 3/4 through the

Chyna was on Larry King's show on CNN Wednesday night.

She said she liked playing the character, hitting men, combining her athletic ability with the love of her character. She liked the name Chyna, picked out by the WWF. She said she had to be really persistent in getting the character of Chyna. She said she was always an athlete and an entertainer growing up -- dancing, playing musical instruments and acting.

Larry asked her why she left. She said she didn't. She said she was released from her contract (couldn't come to terms). She said Vince McMahon had just purchased WCW and she was the first big star up for contract renewal. She said her decision came down to 1. Couldn't do other things. 2. She'd be going backward financially. 3. She had "milked the cow" there. She said she tried to be professional regarding Triple H and Stephanie, and she said she's only human, so it's natural that she was upset.

She wants to do movies. She has a new deal with Playboy, signed Tuesday, for January's issue. She thinks her character brought in lots of minorities and women into the business. She considers herself the "emerging woman."

She admitted having been raped at the University of Tampa. She said it made her a more liked and happier person. She did confirm having had bulimia. She is not in contact anymore with her parents, but is close with her sister. Larry asked about her breast implant popping. She did confirm that. She said she is a lady with muscle and a look of strength. She said that men wrestlers are more experienced than the women they have wrestling (I'm sure she was referring to the divas).

She said "never say never" regarding a return to wrestling, even mentioning a possible one-time return at Wrestlemania. She said she is indebted to Vince McMahon. She said she is single and is enjoying being wined and dined. She said she was going to join the secret service. That was basically the gist of the show.

On a side note, I finally got through on the lines and told Larry King's assistant my question: "What does Chyna think the future of women's wrestling is?" The assistant said they already had that question. Well, that question was never used, so Larry King's assistant was either full of it or they never got to the question. Oh well.

  • Welcome to my review of Chairshots the radio show starring Brent Fusaro
and Rod Siciliano. The show airs on 88.1 FM WBLQ in Westerly, Rhode Island
on Thursday nights from 6-7:30 PM. This is only a review of the show; the
whole show can be heard on http://www.chairshots.com with use of Real Player. This
week's guests are Konnan and Les Thatcher.

    Konnan

  • Konnan said that his contract with WCW was up last Monday and he has been
working some Indy shows in the U.S. and Mexico and he is planing on going on
tour with Sonny Ono in Australia, and with Vince Russo in Ireland and
    Scotland.
  • Konnan said that he will be wrestling Vampiro on the Ono tour and the Main
Event will be Curt Henning vs. Steve Corino, Juventud Guerrerra and
Psychosis will also be on the tour.
  • Konnan said that the possible wrestlers on the Russo tour would be
Juventud Guerrerra, Psychosis, Harris Brothers, Jeff Jarrett, Buff Bagwell,
Sid Vicious, Stevie Ray, Big Vito, Ken Shamrock and Roaddogg.
  • Konnan said he will be doing some PR work there with Buff Bagwell and
    Roaddogg on September 2nd
  • 8th.
  • Konnan said that the heat between he and Vampiro started in Mexico. He
said that in order to be a babyface in Mexico you have to be a sound
technical wrestler and Vampiro was not. Konnan advised him to remain a
heel. Then Vampiro became an overnight success and he thought Konnan gave
him bad advice because he was jealous of him.
  • Konnan added that Vampiro was offered a part on a soap opera with a non
speaking part, however Vampiro wanted to speak during his role and asked for
a lot of money. Konnan ended up with the part and it made him a huge
crossover celebrity and Vampiro thought Konnan went behind his back to get
    the part.
  • Konnan said that he and Vampiro have patched things up since then, but he
still thinks Vampiro is eccentric and has a real life dark side.
  • Konnan said that Vince Russo was handed a sinking ship and he also had a
lot of people in the office working against him. Konnan feels that Russo
did as good a job as he could have, given the circumstances.
  • Konnan said that Vince Russo and Kevin Nash contributed to the problem,
but both did as good as they could at the time.
  • Konnan called Vince Russo a very passionate man and told a story about one
time when Russo came to him and asked him what he could do with Rick Steiner
and some other nameless wrestlers who Konnan thought were lost causes
(excluding Rick Steiner.) Konnan said that this proved to him that Russo
generally cared about everybody and wanted every wrestler to succeed.
  • Konnan said that a myriad of problems led to the fall of WCW, but the main
reason was that Eric Bischoff acted like a dictator and was always
threatening to fire people. He also said that Bischoff put all his eggs in
one basket with Hogan and that cost him.
  • Konnan also said that the older wrestlers kept the younger wrestlers down.
  • Konnan said that WCW ruined themselves by not using Benoit, Jericho, Big
Show, Mike Awesome and Bret Hart when they had them.
  • Konnan also said that he was the biggest draw in the history of Mexico and
that the biggest minority group in the U.S. is Mexicans and WCW didn't
    capitalize on him either.
  • Konnan said his favorite stretch run while he was in WCW was when he was
    with the Wolfpac.
  • Konnan said that he made a joke about Kevin Nash one-day in St. Louis
because Kevin called in and said he would be late. So Konnan said that
"Nash was probably getting a lap dance from some stripper at the Gold Club
in Atlanta." Konnan said that Nash confronted him about it and wanted to
fight. He also said he didn't understand this because Nash jokes around 24
    hours a day.
  • Konnan said that he and Nash were not friends after this, but have since
talked about it. Konnan also said that he was hurt because he would've
taken a bullet for Nash and Nash took out his frustration on his friends.
  • Konnan said that Nash as a booker did a lot of things that hurt the
company, such as pushing his friends and making himself the first person to
beat Goldberg, and making himself the winner of the battle royal in Detroit,
just because it was his hometown. Konnan was also critical of the time when
Nash handed the belt over to Hogan with just the push of a finger and the
    desert incident with Ric Flair.
  • Konnan also said to be fair that Nash had a lot of guys who didn't want to
work for him and all of the bookers did things that were brutal.
  • Konnan said that Kevin Sullivan was better as a booker towards minorities
than Bischoff. He said that Sullivan was the one responsible for brining in
the Japanese and the Island boys and Konnan thinks it is because Kevin was
around a lot of minorities in Miami.
  • Konnan did say that Kevin Sullivan came to him while he was in ECW and
told him that if he came over to WCW he would get to work on top with Hogan
and they would go down to Mexico. Konnan doesn't know if Kevin lied or if
his ideas just got shot down.
  • Konnan said that while he was in Mexico he took a lot of talent from the
big two companies for his promotion down there and he is now not allowed to
use their talent if he goes back down there. Konnan is willing to serve his
punishment and get back in their good graces.
  • Konnan said that if Russo or Nash were booking when WCW was doing well
    they would have thrived.
  • Konnan said that he believes that Nash and Russo could've worked together
and he thinks that it was Nash who talked to Bill Busch about bringing Russo
    in.
  • Konnan said that WCW was a reflection of society and racism did exist.
  • Konnan said that Lex Luger was very intelligent and funny, but he was also
very mean at time and he said he knows for a fact that Luger went to
Bischoff and told him that Konnan was not going to be a star and not to push
    him.
  • Konnan said that Luger also had something to do with telling Bischoff that
a lot of gangsters were going to come to the shows and scare families away
after Konnan did the thing with Master P.
  • Konnan also said that Bischoff gave him a huge push and knew better than
anybody what he could do, but Bischoff listened to too many other people's
    opinions of him.
  • Konnan said that he got Super Crazy into ECW and also got Essa Rios into
    the WWF.
  • Konnan said that he was responsible for finding a lot of this young
    talent.
  • Konnan did not agree with the decision to unmask guys like Rey Mysterio
Jr. in WCW because it was a huge part of the Mexican culture.
  • Konnan said that it was originally Scott Hall's idea to take off the
masks, but he went back on the idea, however by that time Eric Bischoff was
    hell bent on the idea.
  • Konnan said that the reason Bischoff made this decision was because he
thought Rey was more marketable without it because he was good looking.
  • Konnan said that he is content with his wrestling career because he knows
that his peers know he could have been a main eventer if he wasn't held
back. However, he would love to finish his career in the WWF and wrestle
guys like HHH, The Rock and Stone Cold, who he called the three most
valuable wrestlers in the industry today.
  • Konnan said that he didn't mind doing commentary in WCW, but they didn't
let him talk the way he wanted to. Konnan also said that he said some jokes
about Kronik while commentating and they wanted to fight him.
  • Konnan said that he was wrestling with Kronik in Germany and they dropped
him on his head and he got a concussion, but they said it was an accident.
Konnan said he is cool with them now.
  • Konnan said that he wanted to say hi to Les Thatcher and called him a cool
    guy.
  • Konnan said that if you want to book him Juventud or La Parka you could
    contact him.
  • Konnan thanked everyone for listening and thanked Rod and Brent for having
him on and then went into character as he signed off.

    Les Thatcher

  • Les said that the Pillman show was a huge success.
  • Les said that he is always nervous before the event.
  • Les said that this year that had the most people in attendance ever and
also raised the most money at over $40,000.
  • Thatcher said that he thought Diamond Dallas Page was very professional
with the fans, despite what the Internet said.
  • Les said that all wrestlers are volunteers, so there can be no complaints
that they work them like slaves. He also said they went out of their way to
    accommodate all of the wrestlers.
  • Les said that the WWF would like to work more closely with the event next
year since they are affiliated now.
  • Thatcher also said that he thinks there will be a Pillman show in 2002.
  • Les said that some of the travel problems occurred because the WWF guys
were coming off of their show in California.
  • Thatcher wishes that more positive things could be written about the
    event.
  • Les said that all of the wrestlers wanted to put 100% effort in and are
highly critical of their own matches.
  • Thatcher said he was excited that some of the veterans sat down and
critiqued the matches with some of the younger guys.
  • Les said he likes to teach the basics to the guys so that they know how to
protect themselves and their opponents before they learn to do moonsaults
    and hurricanranas.
  • Thatcher said they have KweeWee, Lash Laroux, Mike Sanders, Mark
Jindrak, Reno, Shannon Moore, Evan Karagis, Yang, Jamie Knoble and others
    working at HWA right now.
  • Les said that all of the wrestlers have a very good attitude.
  • Thatcher said that Dean Malenko has been helping him out.
  • Les said that Big Show, Kanyon, Rhyno and Molly Holly are working some
shows for him and helping develop these kids.
  • Thatcher said that Nigel Maguiness had to go home to England because his
passport ran out and he talked highly of him.
  • Les promotes his web site at http://www.hwaonline.com and gives out the HWA phone
    number at (513) 771-1650.
  • Thatcher said that the Best of Pillman tapes are available for sale on his
    web site.
  • Les thanks Rod and Brent for having him on and signs off.
