News Broadcast rights for WWF, baseball push Headline Media into Q3 loss By STEVE ERWIN TORONTO (CP) - The cost of broadcasting World Wrestling Federation programming and live baseball games helped lead to a $4.5-million third quarter loss for Headline Media Group Inc., the company said Thursday. The loss for Headline Media, best known as the owner of national sports network The Score, was more than three times steeper than its loss for the same year-ago period. The company said it paid rights fees of $5 million during the quarter, compared to $900,000 in the same three-month period last year. Those fees included $3.9 million paid for the exclusive Canadian broadcast rights for the WWF's Smackdown! and Metal programs, plus the now-defunct XFL football league, which was owned by WWF president Vince McMahon, and Major League Baseball games. Revenues, however, soared for the three months ended May 31 to $9.6 million, an increase of 161.1 per cent over revenues of $3.7 million for the same period last year. However, the revenue boost came from Headline's sports and entertainment marketing business, not The Score. Headline said its revenue was boosted by $5.9 million from St. Clair Group Investments Inc., which it bought in a cash-and-stock offer worth about $2.2 million in January. It was the first full quarter that Headline has owned St. Clair. St. Clair manages sports and theatre properties and controls the rights to, and operates as executive producer and marketing agent for, live and tape-delayed sports television in Canada, involving Canadian junior hockey, major national and international curling, and other Canadian sports properties. The Score, which started as mostly a sports highlights network before it moved into some live programming, had an operating loss of $4.1 million compared with $600,000 in the same quarter last year. The increased loss was linked to production costs for new programming and the broadcast rights for WWF programming and Major League Baseball games. Revenue for Headline's broadcasting group were $3.6 million, equalling the same quarter last year. Television advertising revenues for The Score rose by $700,000, but this was partially offset by no advertising revenues generated by its discontinued radio broadcasts, which had $500,000 in revenue in the prior year. Starting this fall, Headline will also be the broadcaster for PrideVision, a digital specialty channel devoted to the gay lifestyle, this fall. Headline completed a $30 million public offering in April, with proceeds going to fund the ongoing operations of both The Score and PrideVision. Credit: Yahoo! News Canada Robert Fallon sent in the following: I caught the last half of 'Dave Mirra Bike Stunt Tour' on ESPN today and the Macho Man Randy Savage was on hanging with Dave, Dave smoked him in some arcade games at ESPN Zone in New York City and was awarded a trophy made out of Slim Jim's. Savage also was at a BMX event. Vessey632 sent in the following: I was watching the Dave Mirra BMX SuperTour on ESPN today and Macho Man Randy Savage made an appearance at one of the demos. He did his usual "Oh Yeaaaaaaaah!" shtick and commented on some of the moves the bikers did. Later on he was on the Mirra tour bus joking around with Dave. Dave challenged Savage to go to the ESPNZone since Savage was talking a bunch of smack. They went there and played a bunch of games like a football throw and biking game. Mirra won 3-1 (the only event Savage won was the biking game) and Savage presented him with a trophy made of Slim Jims. After the tour bus left they showed Savage trying to get a cab but nobody would pick him up. WV: Exclusive Interviews, News, Results, More!
