Begins National Campaign Voter Registration Opens at WWF New York NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2001--Having already helped hundreds of young people register to vote this year, the Smackdown Your Vote! campaign announced today it was stepping up its voter registration efforts in New York City and at dozens of World Wrestling Federation live events through November. ``Here in New York, there's a big race for mayor and city council,'' said World Wrestling Federation Entertainment CEO Linda E. McMahon, noting that New Yorkers will elect a new mayor in the fall, as incumbent Rudolph Giuliani is unable to seek another term. ``Just because it's not a presidential election year, doesn't mean that the elections are any less important. In a lot of ways, local elections can be even more important because the issues that decide them are so much closer to home.'' ``We will be registering voters at virtually every World Wrestling Federation event held in 28 states and the District of Columbia this year, and anyone can register online through wwfvote.com,'' said WWF Superstar Kurt Angle, honorary chairman of the Smackdown Your Vote! campaign. ``It's key that young people make their voices heard by registering to vote now and then going to the polls at election time.'' As part of the effort, people will be able to register at WWF New York, the entertainment complex in Times Square, through November. Smackdown Your Vote! is a nonpartisan initiative of the National Association of Secretaries of State, the National Foundation for Women Legislators, the Youth Vote Coalition, Youth-e-Vote, Project Vote Smart and World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. (WWFE). More than 150,000 young voters were registered in a little more than two months during the 2000 presidential campaign, as a result of this initiative. Since renewing the campaign last month, several hundred high school students have also been registered. Daniel DeFrancesco, executive director of the New York City Board of Elections, joined today's event, urging the city's young people to register and vote. ``Our young people have a chance to make a powerful contribution this year. With no incumbent running for the city's highest office, young voters can truly make a difference. My office is delighted to have a role in this important effort.'' Angle and fellow WWFE Superstars Ivory and Albert, together with DeFrancesco's staff and volunteers from the Youth Vote Coalition, manned registration tables at the restaurant. Registration was also planned at tonight's taping of WWF SmackDown!(TM) at Madison Square Garden. The Youth Vote Coalition has received a grant from WWFE to underwrite a full-time Smackdown Your Vote! coordinator who will oversee voter registration drives around the country, linked to the schedule of nearly 70 WWFE live events through November. (Editors note: A map and a list of WWFE events where voter registration will be conducted between now and November is available at wwfvote.com. A list of mayoral races is available at: www.usmayors.org/uscm/elections/electioncitiesfall2001.pdf ) SMACKDOWN YOUR VOTE! PARTNERS Founded in August 2000, Smackdown Your Vote! is a partnership of organizations taking a nonpartisan approach to getting young people involved in the political process and registered to vote. The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), founded in 1904, is the nation's oldest non-partisan government association, representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the territories of American Samoa, Guam and the Virgin Islands. The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) provides strategic resources to elected women for leadership development and effective government through conferences, seminars, policy committees, issue-education materials, professional and personal relationships, and networking at both the state and federal levels. As a non-profit, the NFWL does not take ideological positions on any current issue, but rather exists to assist women leaders in the process of legislative debate, networking, re-elections, public opinion molding and leadership. Project Vote Smart was founded by former Presidents Ford and Carter and other national leaders as a non-profit, non-partisan research library. Access to the Project's data is available through the Vote Smart web site (www.vote-smart.org) and the toll-free Voter's Research Hotline (888-VOTE SMART), staffed by student interns and volunteers. Youth-e-Vote is a national campaign to increase the involvement and awareness of young Americans in the political process. Youth-e-Vote is a national coalition of educators, youth groups and technology specialists devoted to making future voters of today's students by promoting civics education in American classrooms. The coalition also provides a risk-free test of online voting, helps to close the Digital Divide, and inspires parents to vote. It is the first national registration and online voting project in American history. Youth Vote Coalition is the largest, most diverse, non-partisan coalition in history to engage young people, ages 18-30, in politics. The Youth Vote Coalition consists of more than 75 national organizations representing hundreds of groups and millions of young people. The Youth Vote Coalition calls for youth debates at the presidential, state and local levels. It devotes an unprecedented amount of resources to building state and local Youth Vote Coalitions. The Youth Vote Coalition was formerly known as Youth Vote 2000. World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. is an integrated media and entertainment company headquartered in Stamford, Conn., with sales offices in New York City, Chicago and Toronto.
