There are wrestlers who are good, there are those that are bad, and there are those who are amazing. But there is a fourth category that usually gets overlooked, and for good reason. That is the overlooked category. See, I told you there was a good reason. Many current WWF superstars fall into that category. The people in this certain group are usually the ones that the WWF has wrestle on Jakked because they have a really hard time finding a good angle, a good character, or both. Guys like Dean Malenko, Crash Holly, Jerry Lynn, Steve Blackman, and up to a week or two ago, Perry Saturn. But there is one man that has the in-ring talent and the ability on the mic to go straight to the top. In fact, Raven should already be close to that as it is.
I know what some of you are thinking, and you may just be right. Raven is pushing forty, and a lot of people seem to think that when you hit that age (or somewhere near it) your career is either over, or that you will never be as good as you once were. But with the few unbelievable talents like Raven, age is just a number. Until Raven's knees into the knees of Terry Funk, I believe he an easily be a main event talent.
Of course, like all of the current WWF superstars, he would have to work his way up to the top. They would also have to categorize him as a face or as a heel, which they had trouble doing with him on his first round of TV. In my opinion, Raven is better off as a heel. When in ECW, he was one of the greatest heels that I have ever seen. His promos (usually monologues) were the perfect blend of imagery and emotion. His in-ring work was some of the best heel work that anyone could hope for. But most fans who had never seen him before his WWF days have no clue how untapped he really is, because all they did was put him in the Hardcore division, so he was like every other guy who knows how to swing a trash can or shoot off another fire extinguisher, and that was their biggest mistake: they neglected to put him in a place where his true talents could be shown. Instead of making him the outcast poet that he was, they made him the crybaby character he used in WCW. Although it was a pretty good angle for WCW, it has been done already.
Now I definitely know what you are thinking: "But Dr. Shaft, why should he use his ECW character then? That has already been done, too." While that is true, I think it is rare that a wrestler finds his perfect character, and it is a shame if they ever lose it. When anyone is on a medium that could make him the best he can be, you have to capitalize on something you can do the best, and like I said before, I truly believe that his ECW persona was one of the best heel gimmicks I have ever seen. If put out there right, he could dominate.
For those that are uneducated to his ECW character, let me explain real quickly. He played a Generation X, child abuse victim who could manipulate people to do his dirty work for him. In addition to that, he was a tortured soul who got pleasure out of hurting other people. He was also very poetic. I think that could work out very well if the WWF did it correctly. Maybe to help him, he gets one or two people to act as partners, or lackeys. Maybe even his old lackey Steven Richards. We all know he could use something to do now that this RTC thing is as close to death as it could be. But whatever the case may be, just let him do what he does best: mess with people's heads. Kane would be a good choice since that has happened to him in the past. Maybe even a young and upcoming guy with nothing to do, like K-Kwik. Of course, you have to get a woman. If you want to get him over, it would have to be someone like Lita. Hey, that is a good idea! Or is it? I refuse to get into that.
And hey, he's not injury prone! What a find! But seriously, there are some people who are unable to get over the age thing. He is closing in one forty...who gives a shit? The man is more talented than half of the roster. Hell, more than half of the roster. Push the man...and Eddie Guerrero, too. Remember that one?
This is the good Doctor signing off until next time saying: Oh, what are my thoughts about the stalker? Diamond Dallas Page was a great choice...but I still think SABU would have been a better choice. LATER!
