Reaching For The Ropes - What makes a good wrestler Part 2
Submitted by Vince Migliore on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 10:05 PM EST

What's going on everybody? I hope you guys had a good week because mine was pretty cool. I got a lot of feedback from last week's column and most of it was good. However I got one complaint that I never thought I would get. Apparently my column is too damn long for some people. I'm sorry but once I start writing I'm not going to stop because I think it's too long or keep going because I think it's too short. I just like to write until I feel that I've covered everything I want to. I guess 12 pages might be a bit much for some people to read in one sitting. My advice to you is get a damn attention span or just don't read it. This week I will make an attempt to shorten it, but I'm not making any promises.

    Short Comments on Debatable Issues

    Vince's head explodes once more

Oh my goodness what the hell is Vince McMahon thinking? Does he actually think by showing his wrinkly old ass on TV he will bring in the ratings? Now I was extremely pissed off last week after William Regal was humiliated on TV when he could be wrestling a damn good match instead. This week Vince basically slaps Jim Ross in the face and gives him a big middle finger. Vince showed he doesn't respect or appreciate Jim Ross in the least. I know that Jim Ross had to accept, but if you actually believe that JR wanted to be humiliated in his hometown again then you must be smoking some strong stuff. Tonight on Smackdown Vince strikes again and pulls his damn pants down. I seriously hope this does not continue. If for some reason Vince does continue showing is flabby buns on TV then he is going to lose a whole lot of viewers.

    Undertaker a heel once again

I like pretty much everyone else who was watching RAW on Monday knew that when the Undertaker was coming down to the ring to save JR he was going to be turning heel. Now a lot of people think that this was a bad move, but in my opinion I thought it was a good move. Well I take that back it wasn't really a good move but it was an understandable move. By having the Undertaker be a face there is really nothing for him. When HHH comes back he will be a face so the amount of Heels is pretty slim. The problem I have with the turn is that there was no reason for it on Monday night. They could've saved it for the PPV or some other time. It look like RVD and Undertaker are going to have a feud that will last longer than a few weeks and that can be really good or really bad for RVD. If the Undertaker doesn't put him over it's going to be very bad, but I think he will do the right thing and put RVD over. Just as long as we don't see UT Vs Steve Austin or UT Vs Kane again I will be happy.

    I liked RAW...

I was utterly shocked at the amount of negative feedback from Raw on Monday. I will admit there was some crap on the show, but gimme a break it wasn't that bad. I really liked the RVD Vs D-Von Dudley match. The William Regal/Big Show peeing incident was pretty damn funny if you ask me. Of course it was tasteless but since when has the WWF worried about offending someone? The Rock/Y2J promo war was amazing if you ask me. They both did an awesome job, and really make me want to see that match at the PPV even more. It really seems that they are shaping Vengeance rather nicely and for a change we will know all the matches in advance. All of this being said once JR was forced in the ring the show went to the shitter. However I cannot see myself saying a whole show was terrible because of one awful segment.

    Keeping An Eye Open
Keep an eye open for these things this week in wrestling

    1. Booker hired by McMahon to take on the Big Show
    2. More McMahon ass kissing (unfortunately)
    3. Undertaker trying to act like a heel
    4. More Hardy Boy problems
    5. Jim Ross to extract his revenge!
    6. Tazz gets jobbed out once again
    7. Vengeance card finalized
    8. An actually wrestling match for the main event on RAW
    9. Edge/Regal to start a feud?

Main Topic - What makes a good wrestler Part 2

*****THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AND I DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OF THIS TO BE FACT OR PART OF AN OFFICAL FORMULA FOR BEING A SUCCESSFUL PRO WRESTLER********

Sorry for that large warning, but I had to put this up here to prevent any hate mail. As most you avid readers of my column might know a few weeks ago I wrote part 1 of a multi-part series. I wrote one of the first things IN MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION makes up a good wrestler. Yes I know I'm not a wrestler nor would I be able to do shit in the ring against a pro. However after 12 years of watching this sport I think I have the right to formulate a slightly educated opinion on what makes a good wrestler. Granted I'm only 17 but even so you get my point. The first part of this series I talked about the art of selling so this week I'm going to move away from an in-ring aspect and move towards a sports entertainment aspect. OOOOOH I said the evil word "Sport Entertainment" Get the damn holy water cause I might just say it again.

Mic skills, like it or not, are a huge piece of the puzzle that makes a good wrestler. Think of all the things being good on the mic does for you? It helps you develop your character, helps you get over, hypes your matches, sells t-shirts (not like that's important but it does), gets more heat on your opponent, and entertains the fans. All of these combined can equal a pretty good push. Think of all the guys who are only average in the ring, but because of their great mic skills they were able to excel in the sport. I know that there is a lot of people who think mic skills are overrated, but I tend to disagree. Now granted these shouldn't be important as ring work, but they still should be important nonetheless. Nowadays the fans want the match sold to them before it happens. The fans want to share something with the wrestlers and this is where catchphrases come into play. If you can get the crowd to interact with your promos you're going to get over with them pretty big. All of this being said Mic skills haven't really been a necessity for wrestlers until recently (the last 5 or 6 years). People like Ric Flair were way ahead of their time with the killer promos they gave and it helped him get over a lot because when you ask anyone who gives one of the best promos they will say Ric Flair.

    Question Of The Week

Last week I asked What do you think could have made the Invasion angle a success? I kind of figured I'd get a huge response from this topic and I was correct. Here are some of the responses I received.

    The Reverend Daddy Joe wrote:

I think that the problem was the fact that the WWF had only required two big names from WCW, Booker T and DDP. DDP got wasted by the Undertaker and then he was out on injury, which wasn't a good thing, that was a bad thing. They should have let Booker T keep the title and made him look like a monster heel, having him lead the WCW side of things instead of Austin. Also out of all the great talent they had from WCW, they used so very little of it. If they would have established a story for each of the WCW wrestlers then they all would have looked good.

    Bobby wrote:

In WCW, with the NWO, they took the biggest star, and moved him to the NWO, and a strong supporting cast.In WWF they took Austin, sent him to the Alliance...but he didn't have a strong supporting cast because he always belittled them, or they were run into the ground before he defected.
Bottom line? They needed to make the Alliance a real threat, and not job them in every match. Even the not so good Alliance members should have won, by having a much better Alliance member run down to help them cheap. That way, no WWF wrestler, no matter who he is matched up with, would be safe from their reach.

Well, obviously if they couldve signed some of the bigger WCW stars, such as: Sting,Nash,Hall,Big Poppa Pump,Jarrett,Rey Jr,etc. Starting out with DDP and Booker T as the only 2 biggies just didnt cut it for an Invasion angle?! . . .

Sorry for those whose emails I cut up a bit, but I didn't want to take up two pages with emails. Thanks a lot for all of you that respond to my QOTW because I really like getting your emails. This weeks question is What do you think of the Mr.McMahon kiss my ass club? Send all responses to NYYanks24@mediaone.net
