![]() With the exception of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, most of the major newspapers in circulation today are written at an 8th grade level. Matter of fact, USA Today, the number one circulated newspaper in the world, is written at an 6th grade level. While simplicity calls for 'big words' to be replaced with 'easy to read words' it does serve a purpose. Despite modern science, technology and innovation, simplicity is apart of our everyday life. As far as the wrestling industry is concerned, simplicity is the fabric that conjures up ideas and the glue that holds together complex storylines. The wrestling industry/Sports Entertainment lies atop a very simple foundation. Good vs Evil. The master of Spin, Vince McMahon has often be quoted referring to WWF Superstars as 'shades of gray' inferring that no one is a good guy and no one is a bad guy. Yet despite his claim, we know other wise. In recent months the World Wrestling Federation has refused to either accept simplicity or reject it. It's undeceive mainframe has hindered the progression of the wrestling industry and in large is responsible for the decline in ratings. "Keep it simple", how many times has someone told you that when you were writing a paper, swinging a golf club, creating a report, designing a webpage. Simplicity is key, and often the WWF creative team fails to recognize that. While internet fans may crave a detailed response when a wrestler turns, in truth a simple explication will do. And as we have seen with the multiple turns between Steve Austin, Kurt Angle and WCW in general, the creative team has come up on the short end of the stick. Now don't get me wrong, simplicity is not the golden rule. At times storylines that shy away from simplicity are the most intriguing. Yet just as there is a fine line between genius and insanity, there is a distinction between simplicity and complexity. Confused, don't be. Within recent weeks the on going tension between Chris Jericho and The Rock have made for some of the best WWF programming in recent memory. The concept was simple, Jericho needed to prove to the WWF, the fans, his critics and himself that he can win "the big one". In his path stood The Rock. The two fan favorites battled and in the process Chris Jericho completed his transformation from mid level baby face to a possible main event heel. Simple Take into consideration the current storyline involving Kurt Angle. He went from heel to face to heel to face for 24hours, back to heel. Simple? No. Confusing? Yes! Intriguing…you tell me! Now don't get me wrong, I'm not promoting simple booking, while it does make since, it can often result in bland and boring programming. Think back to the love triangle with Kurt Angle, Triple H and Stephanie, that was anything but simple, but it was provoking and interesting. While everyone has their own idea on how to improve the WWF, they have over looked the basics. The WWF must make a decision to either accept simplicity or reject it. It's that simple!
