Diana Hart says she won't retract comments made in her wrestling family book
    By JIM MACDONALD

TORONTO (CP) - Diana Hart says she will not back-pedal on comments she wrote about her late brother's wife and is willing to stand by her book, Under the Mat, in court. "I'll stand by my book and let the courts decide," Hart said Thursday from Calgary. "I'm not prepared to back down on this."

Owen Hart, of the Hart family of wrestlers, was killed in May 1999 while performing a stunt at a wrestling show He was 34.

Diana Hart received notice earlier this week that her brother's widow, Martha Hart, is threatening a libel suit for how she portrayed Martha and her family in the tell-all story about the Hart wrestling dynasty.

In a statement issued by Martha Hart's lawyers, she claims the book is "filled with distortions , misstatements and unjustified slurs that attempt to destroy the reputation of my family and me, and undermine the memory of Owen."

If Diana Hart does not issue a retraction, an apology and a withdrawal of the book in its present form then she, co-author Kirstie McLennan, publishers C. Jordan Fenn and Fenn Publishing, and distributor H.B. Fenn & Co. Ltd. will be named in a libel suit.

The notice did not cite the alleged slurs, and Diana Hart says she's puzzled about how she's wronged her sister-in-law

"I'm not sure what she finds to be a slur," she said. "How I shamed Owen, I don't know."

Hart said writing Under The Mat was therapeutic for her since it gave her a platform to address the environment in which she and her 11 sibling were raised.

"If people want to know about the Harts I should have just as much right as anyone else in my family to speak," she said.

While admitting the potential suit against her may help preliminary sales of her book, Hart is surprised that comments pertaining to Martha Hart are getting so much attention.

"I had no idea that things I wrote about Matthew and Dean would be eclipsed by a few sentences about other people I have known," she said.

Her father, Stu Hart, owned Calgary-based Stampede Wrestling. Her mother Helen Hart, died earlier this month from complications related to diabetes. She was 76.

Many of the Hart children became wrestlers, the most famous being former heavyweight champion Bret (The Hitman)Hart.
