MECW problems, Stephanie's speech, WWF/tragedy notes, and more Submitted by William Martinez on Sunday, September 23, 2001 at 3:54 PM EST
- MECW wrestlers Chris Harris, Justice and Rob Williams recently confronted John Collins at his home over his failure to pay the wrestlers for two weeks' work. Collins' wife told the group that he had been suffering heart murmurs, which was the same excuse used two weeks earlier to another group of disgruntled performers.
- As you know, MECW cancelled all of their September shows and the belief is that it is due to the American tragedy. However, there is talk that Tod Gordon fears that John Collins wouldn't have been able to pay the wrestlers for the shows, therefore he cancelled them.
- According to friends of Jimmy Hart, the terrorist attacks may force Hart to consider cancelling several month's worth of promotional appearances.
- When the terrorist attacks took place on September 11th, both Jimmy Hart and Sonny Onoo were in England and staying in a hotel a few blocks away from Buckingham Palace. Onoo stated that he saw several military vehicles guarding the palace from a possible attack. Neither Onoo or Hart were able to contact family members until Wednesday. Both were scheduled to leave Tuesday night but their flight was delayed until Sunday night.
- Despite Jim Ross stating otherwise, three unidentified WWF wrestlers have stated that they were not given the option whether or not to work the Smackdown in September 13th. However, at least one wrestler with direct ties to New York City was pulled aside and given the option by management but no general meeting was held. One wrestler stated that if he wad given the option, he would have driven home on Tuesday or Wednesday.
- No relatives of WWF wrestlers died in the attacks on New York City or Washington DC.
- During his pre-Smackdown instructions meeting prior to the September 13th show, Vince McMahon delivered an inspirational peptalk to the crew.
- According to several WWF wrestlers, management decided to postpone a massive layoff of several wrestlers after the news hit the Internet. The original plan was to release a number of performers following the WCW purchase but instead, the WWF will wait and decide to not renew some wrestler's contracts to avoid a massive layoff. Reportedly, the reason several developmental talents are being used in dark matches is so that the WWF can see who should remain under contract.
- Reportedly, 80% of wrestlers drove to Nashville for Raw following the September 13th Smackdown. The wrestlers were told that they could travel home if they wanted to but were urged not to unless they were certain they could make to Nashville for Raw on time.
- Scotty Too Hotty, Spike Dudley, Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible were away from their families the longest due to the work for IWA Puerto Rico.
- There is some talk that Kanyon has some backstage heat since he has not been on Raw or Smackdown much since losing the US title. He worked a match for syndicated television but put over Albert cleanly.
- As was the case on the Internet, there was talk backstage that Stephanie McMahon's speech on the September 13th Smackdown was in poor taste.
- Apparently, Brian "Grandmaster Sexay" Lawler is on this weekend's WWF travel itinerary which would suggest that he will make an appearance at tonight's Unforgiven. However, there was no backstage talk of his return.
