The MadRanter: How the WWE could set foot in China / Defending JBL Submitted by MadchucK on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 2:12 PM EST
Merry X Mas and Happy New Year people. Great, now that that is out of the way, lets get to some wrestling related issues:
Jeff the Champ
Jeff Hardy, yes yes yes man. You did it. I am really happy for you man. Congratulations. I have been a fan of yours ever since you debuted as one half of the Hardy Boyz. In my mind you should have always been groomed to be the second coming of Shawn Micheals. But now after your long and arduos journey to the WWE Title, you have done even better. You have become the first Jeff Hardy. You are the champion of all those who have a desire to be an individual. I am really happy for you man. I dont care how long your championship run lasts, and I dont care whether or not you will ever have a championship run again after this one, but nobody will ever be able to deny that Jeff Hardy was a WWE Champion. Congratulations, from a Chinese fan of yours from Macau, the Las Vegas of Asia. Keep up the amazing job.
My Man JBL
I dont know about you guys but I am absolutely loving the HBK/JBL angle going on at the moment. I love to see HBK playing the role of an unwilling servant. It wont last long because you know that come Wrestlemania time he will be a face again. But lord I am guilty of loving him play a rich mans dog. The angle is playing out really well at the moment and the booking has been great. I dont think that JBL is going to win the World Heavy Weight Championship off Cena, but I am glad that JBL is in the spotlight once again. But I really dont get it with all the JBL bashing from people. What the hell did JBL ever do to you sorry sons of whiners. JBL is one of the best heels in the business at the moment. Name me another person other than Vicki Guerrero who could get the type of heat that he does. The guy is doing an amazing job at being a heel. He cuts scathing heel promos and he makes whoever his face opponent is cheered that much more. What more could you want from a guy playing a heel? The bottom line is: I dont care what sort of an asshole JBL is in the back, what I do care is that the guy entertains the hell out of me. This guy dont care about being loved, he just loves playing the heel. So what if he bullies people in the back? Shit as long as the guy aint bullying me, then heck I dont have no problems. Do I give a shit that he likes to rough up some new punk? I as a fan want to be entertained and JBL does it well.
To me JBL is like a roughneck cowboy in a modern world. I think deep down that he does a lot of his shit to others in the back because he does have some bully in him. But I guarantee damn you that he also respects and appreciates the guys who have paid their dues. He is like one of those old school marine corp trainers. He will be rough on you, but if you could show him that you mean business, then he would at the very least respect you. Look the guy is rich like hell and he has a bad back. That is love for wrestling right their in your face!
Having read the news here the last two weeks I read an article about a scuffle that he had with Joey Styles. JBL was fucking with Styles and Styles ended up knocking out a drunken JBL out and the incident was done and over with. In an old school way I think JBL now respects Styles, not because he fears him, but because JBL could respect a guy who would be willing to stand up to him. Styles aint a small guy he stands at an almost 6 feet 2 inches. But JBL still towers over him. Its hard to explain it, but a real man would get what I mean. So nerds and politically correct punks, stop whining about JBL and enjoy him as the excellent heel that he is.
How the WWE could expand in China
I have been studying stocks lately. I am very late getting on board but for the first time in my life, I have decided to save my money and invest. I am 29 years old and I know that time is running out on me. If I dont alter my lifestyle and spending habits I am going to end up working the rest of my life and end up broke and miserable with no financial security. I have bought a couple of books about the Stock Market, Accounting, some books on Warren Buffet and Peter Lynch, to get me better prepared for investing. That is the main reason why I have been late putting out columns lately. I have been spending close to 3 hours a day reading and learning about stocks and how to read financial reports. My reading has led me to think of things differently lately, and I began to think a lot harder about the potential that the WWE has as an investment. The Stock price as of this writing is about $11 and change. But is it a good buy? Judging from past performances the WWE stock price will usually shoot up to $19 by the time Wrestlemania comes along, than come May or June, the price ends up coming back down to $11 or $12. The reason for this up and down is simple, Wrestlemania is the biggest PPV thus having the best and most profitable buyrates coupled along with the fact that more people are watching and more merch sales are done. Seasoned investors who follows this stock realizes this and jump in a month or two before Wrestlemania to ride this rise in profit. Then after Wrestlemania comes and goes, the product starts to fizzle a bit, then summer comes and less kids watch TV and go out more, coupled with the fact that WWE knows this and tends to put out shittier programming during this period.
As an investor looking in I would only look at the WWE as a safe little stock that does not have much room for growth at the moment. The WWE has to show me more for me to put more serious money in. Why? Its simple, the fans in America and Canada are pretty much locked up. WWE is carried all around America and Canada already. What the WWE has to do is expand. They have done so in Europe already as witnessed by the Raws and Smackdowns from Europe and the tours that they do their. But that is not enough. What the WWE has to do is invest and expand in other regions and countries like China. India would be a good market too, but as the entire world knows China is the mega nation for growth at the moment and in the near future. China equals Gold.
Apparently I am not the only one who feels this way. Linda McMahon the CEO of WWE has stated that the WWE would be staging its first ever live tour in China in July. I think that its an amazing move. If the WWE were able to establish themselves in China they would have hit the motherload. I see the live events in July as a testing the waters sort of deal. But WWE needs to understand the market.
Take for example the NBA. The Chinese are in with love the NBA, they have always been a fan of the NBA, but with Yao Ming in it, the Chinese fell in love with it. What the WWE needs to do is to start establishing a Chinese Hero. No I dont mean a Kung FuNaki joke character, hell the guy isnt even Chinese. What they need is someone whom the Chinese could identify to as a national hero. See you have to understand the Chinese people. They love face. To them face means everything. Case in point; they wouldn’t even admit that their milk was contanimated until after the Olympics. In fact they knew that their milk was already tainted from way back in March of this year. But because they wanted to save face, they did not let this fact out until after the Olympics was over. In their minds they would rather let babies die or get infected with kidney disease than to let the media print stories of contaminated milk while the Olympics was still going on. That people is the fucking mentality. Also in China its all about politics. Put it this way. The Chinese government has a substantial stake in every single huge business in China. The top TV stations are owned by the government and adheres to strict censorship by the government. So in essence its very simple if the WWE wants to have their shows shown in China. Just make the right connections, pay the right amount of under the table money and they will get their programming on television. Its that simple with the Chinese, make the right connections, pay the right amount of money.
Their thats just part one of my analysis of China. My next piece will feature alot more as to how to properly do merchandise in China and the actual mentality of the Chinese people towards something like wrestling. I will go into much more detail on my next piece. By the way I am a chink, that is why I profess to know so much how the Chinese think.
