Good lookin out for the graphics work, Noc

"When I die, they'll read this and say a genius wrote it.."

Today's intro line comes from Curtis himself, 50 Cent. Like dude or not, he's got just the right amount of assholishness to match up with a guy like me. He's still not as cocky as I am, though. Ha. Welcome back to The HIPE. Allow me to re-introduce myself.. my name is Hus.. H-to-the-U-S.. The HIPEmaster droppin columns, what I do best. Yes, I totally just went there. Looking at my Gucci, it's about that time. Shall I proceed? (Yes, indeed.) Less dew eet!!

You already know what's starting off today's column. Raw was on last night, so my thoughts and opinions soon follow. In case you forgot, this isn't a full-on review of the show. Instead, it's just the bits and pieces that I felt were worthy enough of being discussed.

    - Nice to see Stephanie McMahon start off the show with what was basically an edition of "Ask Stephanie". Hmm.. while the segment didn't exactly turn out very well (except for Santino's brilliant rapping skills), it did give me an idea for a future edition of "Ask Hustle". I won't spill the beans yet, as nothing has been confirmed, but I will say this.. I have something very special planned that will get everyone talking. Hopefully it works out.

    - Victoria is the female version of MVP, isn't she? It seems like she's been on the losing end of 20 matches in a row. I did enjoy seeing the Widow's Peak once again, though. Speaking of my enjoyment, I'm looking forward to seeing Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool have some sort of interaction during the Divas match at Survivor Series. I've been wanting to see that for a while now, and we're only a few days away from it happening.

    - I giggled at the shot Shawn Michaels took at Hulk Hogan during Shawn's backstage segment with Rey Mysterio. Hell, I'd giggle at any shot taken at Hulk Hogan, no matter who was doing it. I also giggled at Shawn introducing he and Rey to Dolph Ziggler, before Dolph even got a chance to step in and introduce himself. Shawn was on it last night. Good stuff.

    - REALLY good tag match with Shawn & Rey taking on The Miz & John Morrison. Just a fun little match with a hot crowd that just made it come across that much better. The finishing sequence was one of the better sequences of the year, in my opinion. I'm only half-surprised that MorriMiz got the win here, with the surprise being that it was a clean victory. That's huge for them, and it says a lot about their standing with those in charge.

    - CM Punk cut what was one of his best WWE promos to date, in my opinion. He needs to show that more, because I've been telling people that he has some really solid mic work, based off of his indy work, and those that never got to witness any of that work think I'm crazy, because they've seen a lot of average and below-average WWE mic work from the guy. That was a long sentence.

    - Didn't take long for my boy Mike Knox to make a statement on Raw, did it? Honestly, he'll be the perfect heel to face Evan Bourne upon Bourne's return to in-ring competition, and in the meantime, he'll be able to work really well with Kofi Kingston. Fast VS Strong is usually a winning matchup for me. Plus, Kofi and Evan both sell really well, and watching them take Knox' finisher is going to be fun.

    - Matt Hardy fans should be really worried about the severity of his knee injury. Hardy himself says he has a torn PCL and stretched ligaments in the back of his surgically repaired left knee after hyperextending it during his match with Finlay at the ECW taping this past week in England. The injury was really obvious last night, as he looked like he could barely walk. As I've mentioned in a few of my columns, he's on a helluva roll recently, and it would be a shame to see that roll derailed because of an injury.

    - Chris Jericho cut one of the promos of the year, but I have a small problem with it. His constant mentioning of the fact that he beat both "Stone Cold" Steve Austin & The Rock in one night is getting old. I really do understand just how big of an accomplishment it was, but damn, the guy's been wrestling since 1990.. you'd think he'd have more career highlights by now than just that. Again, though, it was just a great promo overall. The closing line about how Raw will finall be "saved" when he ends the John Cena phenomenon (although terribly incorrect) was money.

    - The main event was halfway decent. It probably would've been better had it not followed the awesomeness that was Jericho's promo. It's nice to see Orton shaking off that ring rust, though. He's starting to warm up again, which is good. The obligatory "Last Raw Before Survivor Series" brawl closed the show. Those are always fun.

All in all, a better Raw than I was expecting. There's usually not a whole lot going on during the final episode before every pay-per-view, but we got some really nice mic work from CM Punk & Chris Jericho, a really hot tag match with Shawn Michaels & Rey Mysterio VS The Miz & Morrison, and I even got an epic column idea from the opening segment. To me, that makes this episode a definite winner.

I was discussing column ideas with the homie Bloodline (for those of you not familiar with his columns, you need to head on over to LoPForums.com and check them out, because you're missing out), and he gave me the idea of creating my own WWE wrestler-specific DVD set, and I really liked the idea. It came at a fitting time, as well, because I just purchased the 7-disc Special Edition of Eddie Guerrero's new DVD set from Best Buy. I decided I would work on the DVD set for someone that is one of the biggest names on the WWE roster right now, and someone who, although still young, has had enough of a career to warrant having his own multi-disc DVD set. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you..

"Legend Killer: The Randy Orton Story"

The first disc opens with the usual video package intro, complete with rapid-fire highlights of Orton's career thus far, from his OVW days all the way up to the present time. After the intro, Randy Orton himself is shown on some generic set at WWE headquarters, just like they usually have for these DVD sets. He welcomes us to his DVD, and in typical cocky Randy Orton fashion, wants to get right into the action so that he can watch himself wrestle. He introduces us to the first match:

Randy Orton VS Hardcore Holly - Smackdown - April 25, 2002
Randy's very first televised WWE match. It was short, and it wasn't all that particularly good, but it was the beginning of what would become something very special. Randy picked up the victory over Holly, which was a bit surprising at the time. As a special time-consuming bonus, footage of the backstage segment preceeding this match (with Vince McMahon giving Orton a "tryout" match, followed by Stacy Keibler hitting on Orton) could also be shown.

Back to Orton in the studio, where he talks about how he felt working in his very first televised match, what it was like to work with Hardcore Holly, and possibly even where he took Stacy Keibler on their date after the show was over, since she seemed mesmerized by his body. This leads up to the next match:

Randy Orton VS Steven Richards - Raw - September 23, 2002
His Raw debut match, after signing with Eric Bischoff's side during the Raw VS Smackdown contract war. This match was considerably better than his match with Holly, as Randy picked up the victory what was a more technical match than he usually participates in.

Back in the studio, Randy would talk about working in front of a live audience, after working on a taped Smackdown show for a few months. Perhaps even some cocky-talk about how he deserved to be seen on the company's biggest televised stage, and how he always belonged on Raw. He could then briefly discuss being injured soon after his Raw debut, which led to his "RNN: Randy News Network" segments, where he'd appear in vignettes every week and update the people on how his injured shoulder was doing. He could talk about who came up with the idea for RNN, and how it felt when he noticed the fans were starting to boo his new heelish persona, after they had been cheering his white-bread face character since his debut. This would lead to the next segment:

The Debut of Evolution - Raw - February 3, 2003
Of course, Evolution took Randy's career to the next level, and this was the beginning of that. Triple H, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and Batista all interrupted a Tommy Dreamer match introduction, laid Dreamer out, and then Triple H cut a promo, introducing us to his "Theory Of Evolution", with Flair being one of pro wrestling's best, himself being pro wrestling's current best, while Orton & Batista were pro wrestling's future best.

Randy would be back in the studio again, this time discussing how he felt when he found out that he was chosen to be a part of the Evolution supergroup, whether or not he felt it was the right move for him, and what he hoped to gain out of being a member. I'm sure he'd have some interesting stories to tell about the beginning days, back when he and Batista were in their pre-main event days. This would lead to the next match:

Elimination Chamber - Triple H VS Goldberg VS Randy Orton VS Kevin Nash VS Chris Jericho VS Shawn Michaels - SummerSlam - August 24, 2003
Randy's first really big pay-per-view match with the company. Although he was only there to be nothing more than a type of "insurance policy" for Triple H going into the match and defending his World Heavyweight Championship, it was still the start of people seeing that Randy could actually hold his own with more established main event-caliber wrestlers. It's when people really started seeing that big things were in his future. He didn't win the match, of course, but Evolution still came out on top, as Triple H retained his title.

Back to the studio yet again, Randy could then discuss just what it's like to wrestle in an Elimination Chamber, if it's as dangerous and as brutal as it's made out to be, and how he felt he did, performance-wise. He could then begin to play up his "Legend Killer" moniker, which would lead perfectly into the next match:

Randy Orton VS Shawn Michaels - Unforgiven - September 21, 2003
If I recall correctly, this is the beginning of the "Legend Killer" name, as it was billed as "Legend VS Legend Killer" for a little while. This was a really good match, and once again, Randy came out on top, albeit with the help of brass knuckles. It's hard to have a match with Shawn Michaels and not have it come out looking good, and this was no exception. They went at it for nearly 20 minutes, which spoke volumes about how confident the company was that Randy could go.

More talk about the "Legend Killer" name as we return to Randy back in the studio, and perhaps some talk about what it was like to wrestle one of the biggest names in the history of the business one-on-one. A little more small talk, and then we'd go right into the next match:

Team Austin (Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, & The Dudley Boyz) VS Team Bischoff (Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry, Scott Steiner, & Christian) - Survivor Series - November 16, 2003
Steve Austin and Eric Bischoff, at the time, were the co-General Managers of Raw, and this match was to see who would become the one and only GM of the WWE flagship show. Orton won the match for Team Bischoff, and he did so by being the only survivor in the match. Obviously, being the sole survivor in a Survivor Series match shows that you're "big-time", as not just anybody gets that honor.

Footage could then be shown of the next night's match between Rob Van Dam and Ric Flair, in which Randy interfered in and laid out RVD with an RKO, which led to Eric Bischoff giving Randy an Intercontinental Title match against RVD. Back in the studio, Randy could talk about being the sole survivor in the match at the pay-per-view, but he could then talk about why he decided to attack Rob Van Dam, and what it meant to be chasing after his first title as a part of the WWE roster. This would lead to the next match:

Intercontinental Title - Randy Orton VS Rob Van Dam - Armageddon - December 14, 2003
Randy won the match, giving him his very first IC Title reign. I wasn't a huge fan of the match itself, but there's no denying that it was an extremely important part of Randy's career, and it would need to be included in a DVD set of his. This was back when the company still seemed to care about the IC Title, too, which makes it even more special.

Back in the studio to close out the first disc, Randy could talk about what winning the IC Title meant to him, as well as Evolution's dominance over the Raw brand (Randy as IC Champion, Triple H as World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair & Batista as World Tag Team Champions) to end the 2003 calendar year. Maybe he could even share what he was expecting and/or hoping for out of his 2004, just for fun.

The second disc would start with Randy saying two simple words.. Mick Foley. Footage could then be shown of Foley eliminating Randy from the 2004 Royal Rumble, followed by Randy attacking Mick afterwards. Back in the studio, Randy could then talk about the weeks of back-and-forth that he had with Foley on Raw, with footage of the various promos and attacks to go along with it, as well as Foley being challenged to a match at WrestleMania 20. Eventually, footage would be shown of The Rock's return to the company on the March 1st episode of Raw to reunite with Mick Foley, accepting a match at WrestleMania, which would lead us to:

Handicap Tag Match - Randy Orton, Ric Flair, & Batista VS The Rock & Mick Foley - WrestleMania 20 - March 14, 2004
On the biggest stage in all of professional wrestling, Randy won the match for Evolution by pinning Mick Foley. It was more of a great spectacle than a great match, as both Foley and Rock would go on to admit that they may not have been in the best shape for the match after their time away from the ring, but it was still a big match, and a big win, nonetheless, for Randy's career.

Back in the studio, Randy could discuss what his WrestleMania debut was like, how it felt to be in the ring with the likes of The Rock & Mick Foley, as well as wrestling in front of the Madison Square Garden crowd. He could talk about how his feud with Mick Foley wasn't quite done yet, which would then lead to footage of Mick bringing back the Cactus Jack persona, which would then lead to the next match:

Hardcore Match for the Intercontinental Title - Randy Orton VS Cactus Jack - Backlash - April 18, 2004
This match is probably Randy's best match to date, as it was an absolutely brutal match, with the usual Cactus Jack hardcore goodness.. barbed wire, fire, thumbtacks, baseball bats, blood.. the whole nine yards. Going into the match, Randy had his fair share of doubters who didn't think he'd be able to hang with the likes of a Mick Foley in a match like this, but it sure didn't take him long to prove those doubters wrong. He wasn't just the "pretty boy" wrestler that people perceived him to be. No, he could brawl really well when the situation called for it. This was a huge victory in a career filled with huge victories for Randy, without question.

Back in the studio once again, Randy would discuss what it was like to go through a hardcore match with the man most people bring up when they discuss hardcore wrestling, Mick Foley. He could discuss what it's like to taste your own blood during a wrestling match, or something along those lines. He could even have a moment where he discusses just what Mick did for his career, the way the fans see him, and where he thinks he'd be without Mick's help. Footage could then be shown of Randy's feud with Shelton Benjamin, including Shelton coming to Harley Race's rescue after Randy spat in Harley's face. The ending of Randy's match with Shelton at Bad Blood could be shown, with Randy coming out on top. Yet more footage could be shown, this time with Edge becoming the next challenger for Randy's IC Title, which would lead to the next match:

Intercontinental Title - Randy Orton VS Edge - Vengeance - July 11, 2004
Because Randy lost this match, it may be looked at by some as an odd choice to include here, but not only was it a really good match, but it was the end of Randy's time as an upper-midcarder in the company, as he moved on to become a legit main event guy after this. This match was a bit longer than I expected it to be (25+ minutes), but it should be no surprise that two guys the caliber of Randy Orton and Edge could put on a good match with each other.

Back in the studio, Randy could talk about having a seven-month reign as the IC Champion, what the title means to him, and what he thinks of Edge beating him for the title. Footage could then be shown of the July 26th episode of Raw, where Randy won a Battle Royal to get a World Heavyweight Championship match at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view. Even more footage could follow of Randy pinning World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit (yes, he would need to be included) in a 6-man tag match on the August 2nd episode of Raw, which would lead to the next match:

World Heavyweight Title - Randy Orton VS Chris Benoit - SummerSlam - August 15, 2004
Yet more doubters for Randy going into this match, and yet more doubters silenced by Randy coming out of this match. He won his very first World Title here, and it was a good match which really did surprise the hell out of me in how good it ended up being. At just 24 years of age, he was on top of the wrestling world, and it was just the beginning.

We'd go back to the studio yet again, and Randy would discuss what it was like to be given the World Title, how he felt when he first found out the company was letting him "run with the ball", and what emotions were filling him up in the seconds and minutes after pinning Benoit. He could then talk about how the joy of being the World Champion would be followed by the knowledge that he was not the hunter anymore, but now the hunted, which would lead to the next segment:

"Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down" - Raw - August 16, 2004
We'd join this in progress, immediately after Randy beat Benoit in the rematch from the night before. Triple H, Ric Flair, and Batista joined Randy in the ring to throw him a celebration, which led to them turning on him and attacking him. It was a stunning moment, and one that led to Randy flying on his own as he turned face for a while.

Randy, back in the studio, could talk about the roller coaster of emotions that he felt in those 24 hours, with winning the World Title, then winning the rematch on Raw, only to be attacked and kicked out of Evolution mere minutes later. Footage could be shown of the following weeks, with Randy and Triple H having a war of words about just how much Randy Orton was worth without his former Evolution stablemates. This footage would include the end of Randy's Steel Cage victory over Kane, as well as Randy escaping a post-match beatdown from Evolution. This would lead to the next match:

World Heavyweight Title - Randy Orton VS Triple H - Unforgiven - September 12, 2004
Another match that Randy lost, yet still found a way to shine in. Not a lot of people really expected Randy to win this match, and they were proven right. Even in the loss, and even with people expecting it, you just knew this wouldn't be the end of the line for Randy as far as being at the top of the company.

Footage could then be shown of the aftermath, with Randy battling Evolution with the help of Shawn Michaels and Shelton Benjamin, as well as Batista beating Randy in a No-DQ match (thanks to a Ric Flair chairshot) on the September 27th episode of Raw, which prevented Randy from getting a rematch with Triple H at the upcoming Taboo Tuesday pay-per-view. Randy could then discuss how it felt to lose the World Title, as well as what it was like to fight and battle to even get a rematch for the belt. This would lead to the next match:

Steel Cage - Randy Orton VS Ric Flair - Taboo Tuesday - October 19, 2004
While not a five-star classic or anything, it was still a fun, bloody match that was important in Randy's quest to get his World Title back. I remember being surprised that this match was given the main event spot that night, even over the Triple H VS Shawn Michaels World Title match, but Randy still handled his business, picking up the pinfall victory over the greatest of all-time.

Back in the studio, Randy could discuss his quest yet again, as well as what it was like to step into a Steel Cage with the "Dirtiest Player In The Game". Footage could then be shown of Randy's team (himself, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, & Maven) beating "Team Triple H" (Triple H, Batista, Edge, & Snitsky) at Survivor Series, as well as the chaos in the World Title scene that followed, with Eric Bischoff ending the chaos during the December 13th episode of Raw. This would lead to the next match:

Elimination Chamber - Randy Orton VS Triple H VS Edge VS Batista VS Chris Benoit VS Chris Jericho - New Year's Revolution - January 9, 2005
With Shawn Michaels as the Special Guest Referee, these six men went to war inside the Chamber, with Triple H coming out of it as the winner, once again becoming the World Heavyweight Champion after the belt was vacated. Randy continued to be a big part of the Raw main event scene, even in a loss here, as he was the final participant eliminated.

The second disc could end with Randy, back in the studio, once again discussing the Elimination Chamber, and just how close he was to winning the World Title for a second time. He could close it out by saying something along the lines of "the best was yet to come".

The final disc would start with footage of the February 28th edition of Raw, where Randy set his feud with The Undertaker in motion, after WWE Hall Of Famer "Superstar" Billy Graham told him to do something nobody had ever done before. More footage of Randy's eventual heel turn by RKO'ing Stacy Keibler, as well as delivering the move to Jake "The Snake" Roberts, who appeared on Raw in an attempt to stop Randy from calling out The Undertaker. This would all lead to the next match:

    Randy Orton VS The Undertaker - WrestleMania 21 - April 3, 2005
Another loss for Randy, but it was the beginning of an epic feud with The Undertaker, so it would definitely need inclusion in this DVD set. Because Randy had gone into the match with an injury, it was kept relatively short, and nothing over-the-top took place. Taker's victory was pretty much expected by people.

Back in the studio, Randy could discuss things such as what it's like to be in the ring waiting for The Undertaker to make his world-famous entrance, how his injury may or may not have affected his game plan in the match, and how it felt to be in another marquee match at a WrestleMania. A lot of footage could then be shown, ranging from Randy being picked by Smackdown during the Draft Lottery to clips of his match with Taker at SummerSlam, as well as the Handicap Casket Match (with his father, Bob, as his partner) against Taker. Footage could also be shown of Taker's return to the company at Survivor Series, interrupting a Smackdown celebration as Randy had just won a "Raw VS Smackdown" elimination match by being the sole survivor. This would lead to the next match:

Hell In A Cell - Randy Orton VS The Undertaker - Armageddon - December 18, 2005
Another huge match in Randy's career, and while it was another loss, it was also another opportunity to prove his doubters wrong by hanging tough in a match that people didn't think he'd perform well in. In 30+ minutes of action, these two beat the living hell out of each other. It was a bit slow at times, but it still ranks as one of my favorite HIAC matches.

Randy would then be back in the studio, discussing his HIAC match, what it was like, and what he felt about losing to The Undertaker yet again. Footage would then be shown of the 2006 Royal Rumble, with Randy being eliminated at the very end by Rey Mysterio, giving Rey the win and the guaranteed title shot. More footage would follow of Randy beating Rey at No Way Out to take Rey's WrestleMania title shot, and then Smackdown GM Teddy Long making the match a Triple Threat by putting Rey back into it. This would lead to the next match:

World Heavyweight Title - Randy Orton VS Kurt Angle VS Rey Mysterio - WrestleMania 22 - April 2, 2006
In a match that was shorter than it really should've been, Rey won it and won the World Title, but it's included here because it was WrestleMania, and all of Randy's WrestleMania matches should be included in his DVD set. Well, at least if I was in charge of things, they would be.. and sure enough, I'm in charge here. Alright, maybe all of his WrestleMania matches won't be shown, especially since the WrestleMania DVDs are top-sellers as it is, but still.. stop arguing with me.

Back in the studio, Randy could talk about Rey's title victory, as well as being "injured" (kayfabe FTW) at the hands of Kurt Angle soon thereafter. Footage of Randy's return to the company would then be shown, as well as clips of his matches with Kurt at ECW One Night Stand (he lost) and Vengeance (he won). Yet more footage could be shown of Randy goading Hulk Hogan into returning so that he (Randy) could try and kill yet another legend in wrestling history. This would lead to the next match:

Randy Orton VS Hulk Hogan - SummerSlam - August 20, 2006
It obviously wasn't a very technically-sound classic, but any time that Hulk Hogan wrestles these days, it's a really big deal. I almost feel bad for putting this many Orton losses on his DVD set, but you really couldn't pass up putting this match out there, could you? Well, again, it's up to me, not you, so nyeh~!

Back in the studio, Randy could talk about what it was like to wrestle Hulk Hogan one-on-one. Footage would then be shown of the "Rated RKO" era, including clips of their feud with Degeneration X, their World Tag Team Title victory over Ric Flair & Roddy Piper, as well as losing the titles to John Cena & Shawn Michaels. Randy could then talk about how being one half of the tag team champs just wasn't enough for him, and that he wanted to be a world champion once again, which would lead to the next match:

Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Championship - Randy Orton VS Triple H - No Mercy - October 7, 2007
Earlier in the night, Randy was awarded the WWE Title by Vince McMahon, but he went on to lose the title to Triple H in the event's opening match. He was given another shot in the main event, which was this match. I've made it known before, but I really enjoy matches with the LMS stipulation. They usually end up being really fun, brutal brawls, and this one was definitely no different. Nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering, but both men know each other so well and have formed such an in-ring chemistry with each other that it was still a fun match to watch.

Footage would then be shown of Shawn Michaels' return to the company, as well as the matches between Randy and Shawn that followed. The footage would take us into early-2008 as Randy, back in the studio, would talk about what it was like to be back on top of the wrestling world, beating both members of Degeneration X in back-to-back feuds, and how he planned to spend his 2008 as champion. This would lead to the next match:

WWE Championship - Randy Orton VS Triple H VS John Cena - WrestleMania 24 - March 30, 2008
Most people didn't give Randy a shot at retaining his title in this match, but that's exactly what he did. In an electric match, with the biggest names in the company competing against each other, Randy snuck out of there by pinning Cena after delivering the RKOP to Triple H, who had just hit Cena with a Pedigree. Big-time victory from a big-time performer.

Back in the studio, footage would then be shown of the various "Age Of Orton" promos, including the one from the night after Raw, which is probably Randy's best promo in his time with the company. More footage would be shown of his feud with Triple H, post-WrestleMania, including the Steel Cage Match at Judgment Day and the Last Man Standing Match at One Night Stand. Footage of Randy's injury in the LMS match would then be shown, followed by Randy discussing the injury, how it happened, what was going through his mind as he was lying on the outside of the ring, and what he was expecting from the injury as a whole. You could then close the set out with Randy discussing what he has planned for the WWE now that he is fully recovered from his broken collarbone, and you could show footage of his return to Raw as he's talking.

If you're looking for special features, I'd look to include the following things:

    - Randy Orton VS Rob Conway - OVW - January 27, 2001
    - Randy Orton VS Mr Black - OVW - February 14, 2001
    - Randy Orton VS Rico Constantino - OVW - March 17, 2001
    - Randy Orton VS "The Prototype" John Cena - OVW - January 19, 2002
    - Every "RNN" segment from 2002
    - Intercontinental Title - Randy Orton VS Shelton Benjamin - Bad Blood - June 13, 2004
    - Randy Orton VS Rey Mysterio - No Way Out - February 19, 2006
    - His full promo from Raw, the night after WrestleMania 24
    - Randy Orton VS CM Punk - Raw - November 3, 2008

In my opinion, that would be a WWE-produced DVD set worth purchasing, whether you're a huge Randy Orton fan or not. Now, we wait for the company to actually make an Orton set, just so we can see how close I was with my picks.
