UFC 90: Silva v. Cote
Lightweight Bout Tyson Griffin (12-1) v. Sean Sherk (36-3-1) Referee: Dr. David Smith
Round 1 – Sherk shoots in first and both men unload with Sherk taking Griffin to the ground. Sherk takes Griffin’s back and Griffin carries him to the other side of the octagon and drops Sherk. They stand back up and move to the middle of the octagon with Sherk delivering a right and uppercut. Sherk catches Griffin’s kick and pushes him back against the cage and to the ground. They stand back up with Griffin unloading a few knees. Back in the middle both men unload a few shots and Griffin lands a small head kick. Griffin shoots in for a takedown but Sherk stuffs him down. Sherk passes to Griffin’s back and Griffin stands causing Sherk to let go. Griffin with an uppercut and Sherk answers with a combination. Left hook and uppercut by Sherk to end the round.
Round 1 Score – Sherk 10 | Griffin 9
Round 2 – Griffin with a solid body kick but Sherk answers with a left hook and pushes Griffin against the cage. Griffin misses a punch and Sherk hits a knee. Griffin misses a solid combo but hits a high kick. Right hand by Sherk then a left hook. Five punch combo by Sherk but Griffin shakes it off and lands a few body shots. Sherk lands a couple of left hooks and both men unload combinations. Griffin begins slowing down allowing Sherk to land multiple punches. Sherk shoots in and pushes Griffin against the cage and unloads another combination but Griffin lets loose a combination of his own. Another round of punches to end the round.
Round 2 Score – Sherk 10 | Griffin 9
Round 3 – Griffin unloads almost knocking Sherk back but Sherk able to answer. Griffin with another right hook knocking Sherk back a bit. Over the top right hook leads into a solid combination on Griffin. Both men continue to unload combinations but no real advancement. Leg kick by Griffin but Sherk answers with another solid combination. Sherk misses a knee but lands another combination. Griffin and Sherk unleashed a few uppercuts but neither fighter landing. Griffin advances and lands a few more shots to end the round.
Round 3 Score – Sherk 10 | Griffin 9
Winner via Unanimous Decision:Sean ‘Muscle Shark’ Sherk
Heavyweight Bout Junior Dos Santos (6-1) v. Fabricio Werdum (11-3-1) Referee: Marc Fennel
Round 1 – Fabricio starts off with a few leg shots but Santos answers with his own. Fabricio clinches but Santos gets away. Dos Santos lands a stiff upper cut, mounts Fabricio and unleashes to end the fight.
Round 1 – Fight begins rather slowly; Maynard unloads a small combination. Maynard with a nice right hook but Clementi doesn’t seem fazed. Inside leg kick by Clementi. The next few minutes became a feeling out round with a few punches thrown with nothing really landing until Maynard scored a takedown at the 1:30 mark. Maynard stays on top and lands a couple of shots to end the round.

Round 2 – Another slow start before Maynard picks Clementi up and slams him back down. They stand back up but Maynard gets another take down. Clementi goes for a triangle and rolls it into an arm bar but Maynard pulls out. Both fighters swirl around and pass one another; Clementi locks Maynard’s leg up but Maynard is able to pass into a side guard. The rest of the round passes uneventfully.
Round 2 Score – Maynard 9 | Clementi 8
Round 3 – Maynard shoots in and takes Clementi down. Maynard stays on top but no damage being done. Clementi tries to pull out but Maynard passes and stays in a full guard. Clementi tries to control Maynard’s arm but Maynard able to keep control. Maynard moves from a solid side guard into a full mount but Clementi snakes around to keep him off. Standing back up against the cage Maynard gets yet another take down. Maynard lands a solid knee and Clementi gets a nice reversal, passes Maynard’s guard and stands back up. Maynard gets another take down. The round ends with Maynard in control on the ground.

Winner via Unanimous Decision:Gray ‘The Bully’ Maynard
Welterweight Bout Josh Koscheck (13-2) v. Thiago Alves (21-4) Referee: Dr. David Smith
Round 1 – Koscheck shoots in and Alves nails a right hook. Koscheck goes for a side kick and slips but gets out of the way before Alves can capitalize. Alves with a right hook knocks Koscheck down, Koscheck grabs Alves’ leg and is able to recover. Alves lands a stiff high kick. Alves shoots for a Superman punch, a leg kick and an uppercut. Combination by Koscheck and another head kick by Alves. Koscheck with a good right hand pushes Alves against the cage but Alves pushes him back out. Leg kick and another Superman punch by Alves and Koscheck answers with a stiff combination. Inside leg kick into a jab by Alves. Koscheck lands another good right hand, gets Alves up against the cage and lands a knee. Alves grapples Koscheck and brings him to the ground. Koscheck tries to bring Alves further down but Alves able to scramble out and deliver a head kick. Alves lands a few more shots to end the round.

Round 2 – Koscheck looks for an uppercut but Alves dodges. Koscheck moves in and unloads a combination. Alves with a Superman punch and Koscheck lands a switch kick. Nice exchange from both fighters, Koscheck misses a spinning back kick, shoves Alves into the cage, clinches and unloads a couple of knees. Alves switches and is able to pull back into the middle of the octagon. Both fighters trade body kicks. Koscheck shoots in and grabs Alves’ leg, attempts a take down but Alves able to defend against the cage. Koscheck passes to Alves’ back but Alves able to grab an under hook and swing Koscheck around.
Round 2 Score – Alves 10 | Koscheck 9
Round 3 – Alves pushes Koscheck against the cage, a right hook, leg kick and a knee sends Koscheck down. Alves scrambles around him delivering multiple punches. Standing back up Koscheck is extremely wobbly; Alves with another combination. Against the cage Alves scores another solid combination. Up against the cage Koscheck tries to take Alves down but Alves defends and accidentally pokes Koscheck in the eye. Back to the middle Alves with a solid right. Alves lands multiple inside leg kicks, Koscheck not fighting back. Koscheck accidentally pokes Alves in the eye. Back in the middle Koscheck with a few leg kicks. Alves with a leg kick almost sweeps Koscheck to the ground; another right by Alves. Alves misses a Superman punch but recovers and lands another leg kick. Uppercut and left hook combination by Alves but Koscheck answers with a combination as well. The fight ends with both fighters unleashing combinations and a Superman punch by Alves.

Middleweight Championship Bout Patrick Cote (14-4) v. Anderson Silva (22-4) Referee: Herb Dean
Round 1 – First thirty seconds are both men dancing; Cote with a leg kick. Another minute and a half passes with both men still feeling each other out. Silva with a leg kick, straight kick and another leg kick. Yet another minute with nothing happening, Silva unloads multiple combinations and knees, rocking Cote. Nice leg kick by Silva but no capitalization. High kick by Silva to end the round.
Round 1 Score – Silva 10 | Cote 9
Round 2 – Cote with an inside leg kick and a straight punch. Left hook by Silva, misses a high kick, lands a knee to the back when Cote goes for a spinning back fist. Silva has Cote up against the cage and attempts to take him down but Cote able to defend. Cote misses a right hook, Silva answers with a knee and leg kick. Another high body kick by Silva, Cote shoots in and Silva takes him down. Silva has a full guard but Cote delivers a few solid elbows to the head. Silva offers his hand to pull Cote up but Cote wouldn’t take it. Silva backs up and lets Cote stand. Neither man advances much in the middle; Silva switches his hands trying to feel Cote out. Leg kick by Silva but Cote catches it and tries to throw him down. Silva escapes, goes for another leg kick and Cote grabs his leg and pushes him up against the cage. Cote unable to take Silva down, Silva with a quick elbow and multiple knees to end the round.
Round 2 Score – Silva 10 | Cote 9
Round 3 – Cote begins the round with a nice right. Cote steps wrong and buckles.
