ECW Results 07-01-08: Destroyer of Dreams
Submitted by MIK on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 3:21 PM EST
Good evening to all. The following will be my final ECW report for the time being. The reason for this is that I will now be calling the reports for Friday Night SmackDown! as Christopher (current SmackDown! reporter) will switch over to Tuesday’s ECW on Sci-Fi. Thanks for all the good times and I hope you enjoy the report.
ECW on Sci-Fi Tuesdays 10/9
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Before the show begins, we are shown a few clips from this past Sunday’s Night of Champion PPV highlighting the ECW action involving Matt Hardy, Miz, Morrison, and Mark Henry.
New ECW video package rolls. Looks pretty good!
Pyros go off as Tazz and Mike Adamle welcome us to another edition of ECW.
Justin Roberts is in the ring and he introduces the new ECW World Champion – Mark Henry.
Henry makes his way down to the ring with a huge smile on his face. Adamle adds that his victory last Sunday enabled Henry to win his first major championship in the WWE.
Henry is on the mic. and simply states that no one will be able to beat him for the title and that he is the savior of ECW, because not only did he win the match at NOC, but he brought the title back to ECW. Crowd Boos! Henry proceeds to talk, but is then interrupted by Tommy Dreamer, who is accompanied by Colin Delaney.
Dreamer gets on another mic. and demands he wants the first shot at the title. Henry tells him that Dreamer was champion in 1998 and this is 2008. Henry the states that he is future of this brand. Dreamer says that he looks and Henry and at Delaney and sees two complete opposites. He basically says that Henry is not ECW worthy and that Delaney represents everything ECW is – he get’s knocked down, but keeps coming back for more. Dreamer then proceeds to go over the history of the ECW title. After a lecture, Henry says Dreamer needs to earn a title shot. Henry then backtracks and says alright you get a chance. Dreamer starts to say thank you and Henry says no, Colin gets the shot. If Colin wins, Dreamer gets a title shot. Delaney accepts and Dreamer looks worried.
Backstage we see Matt Hardy, Finlay, and Hornswoggle making their way down to the ring.

Matt Hardy, Finlay, and Hornswoggle opponents are none other than John Morrison, Miz, and Chavo Guerrero.
Match 1: Matt Hardy, Finlay, and Hornswoggle v. John Morrison, Miz, and Chavo Guerrero (6-Man Tag Match) Matt Hardy and Miz start things off in the ring. The fans quickly get behind Hardy as both men put on various hand holds and attempt to feel each other out. Hardy hits two consecutive shoulder blocks followed up with an arm drag which results in Miz locked up in an armbar. Miz manages to get Hardy in the corner and hits a couple hard punches but Hardy is able to whip him to the other corner and hit a splash followed by a quick bulldog. Miz kicks out of the quick pin attempt. Finlay tags in and after a swift uppercut Miz manages to work his way over to the corner and Morrison gets the tag in. John is probably regretting this because he is met be some vicious uppercuts as well as a neck breaker and butt flop. I haven’t come up for a better name for that move. Chavo tags in and throws Finlay to the outside. When Chavo goes for the baseball slide Finlay pulls up the apron and traps him within. Morrison and Miz try to come over for the save but Finlay hurls his son at them.

Back, we see Chavo has Hardy held up in a headlock. Chavo pushes him into the corner and Miz gets in the tag. Quick snap suplex and a pin attempt but not even a one count. Miz wheelbarrows Hardy up, Morrison hits an elbow from the apron then tags in and hits another elbow over the rope onto Hardy. They should come up with a name for that so that I don’t have to type it out every week. Not that it matters, Tazz wouldn’t call it by name anyway. Hardy is held up in a Headlock and tries to break free but Miz gets in the tag and also applies a side headlock. Hardy finally manages to get out and hits a sunset flip for a pin attempt but no good. Miz hits a vicious clothesline but Hardy kicks out. Morrison gets the tag and Hardy is once again stranded in the middle of the ring with a headlock applied. Hardy is thrown into the corner and Morrison attempts a splash, but Hardy counters it into a side-effect. Finlay gets in the incredibly super hot tag, and throws Chavo high up into the air when he attempts to clean house. Finlay hits a rolling Samoan drop onto Chavo. Morrison makes the save, but Hardy runs in and gives him a twist of fate. Hornswoggle hits a Tadpole splash. Bam Neely tries to interfere and Finlay nails him with the shillelagh. Finlay hits the Celtic Cross on Chavo for the win. (Rating: 3/5. A nice opening bout. I am very skeptical about giving Hornswoggle’s matches such a rating, but the others balanced out the match evenly which made the following acceptable.)

RAW Rebound: Edge interrupts JR, but gets a beatdown from Batista. Only to make matters worse for the Rated R superstar, CM Punk cashes in MITB and becomes the NEW World Heavyweight Champion! (Congrats Punk!—Titles back on RAW)
Backstage, we see Dreamer talking to Delaney. Dreamer tells him that he did not need to accept the match on Dreamer’s behalf. But Delaney counters by saying that he realizes what the title means to Dreamer. Dreamer looks somewhat appreciative.
We then cut to Teddy Longs office where he is with his assistant Tiffany and a new superstar with hair similar to Carlito. The new guy thanks Long for the opportunity to sign a new contract with ECW. Estrada barges in and is angered at the fact that Long has yet to give him a contract. Long then books a match next between Atlas Ortiz (the new guy) and Estrada.

Once Estrada makes his way down to the ring, Ortiz followed and really tried getting the crowd pumped.
Match 2: Armando Estrada v. Atlas Ortiz As the bell rings, Atlas tries to get the early advantage, but gets caught in a headlock. Seconds later, Atlas reverses it into a headlock. Back in the ring, Ortiz locks in another headlock and then hits a pretty solid body block onto Armando in the corner. He throws Estrada to the other corner and attempts another hit but Armando moves out of the way and slams Ortiz’s head down to the mat. Soon thereafter Armando starts working on Atlas’ arm. Armando appears to be getting a little cocky as he smashes Atlas’ hand everywhere. Ortiz gets flipped over and is locked into a wristlock. Atlas attempts to power out but Armando pulls his hair and throws Ortiz down to the mat. Once again Armando locks in a wristlock.Armando is yanking back Atlas’ arm and has him dead in the center of the ring. I’m confident this is the longest we have ever seen him wrestle. Atlas is able to get out and hits three arm drags. He manages to power up and hits a dropkick that had impressive elevation. Armando attempts a clothesline, but Atlas counters into a backslide pin for the win. (Rating: 2.5/5. Interesting between the two. You can tell when Estrada signed with the company, he intended to be a wrestler and not manage Umaga. Ortiz looked decent, but I’m not sure if the guy has what it takes to be more appealing to the crowd)

Back, we see Mark Henry making his way down to the ring for the main event.
Colin Delaney makes his way down to the ring accompanied by Tommy Dreamer.
Main Event: Mark Henry v. Colin Delaney The bell rings and Henry laughs. Henry attempts a clothesline, but Delaney dodges it and backs away. Dreamer can be heard saying “That’s right! Use your feet!” Henry then grabs and slams Delaney to the turnbuckle. Henry tries another clothesline, but Delaney moves out and traps Henry in the corner. Delaney now strikes with punches and crowd cheers. Unfortunately, Henry shoves Delaney down to the mat with pure power. Henry picks Delaney back up and this time slams his head into the mat. Henry proceeds by standing on Delaney’s hair and thrusting him upwards. Delaney can be heard screaming. “Let’s go Colin” chants emerge. Henry punches Delaney back down and attempts to hit a big elbow drop. Colin moves out of the way and Delaney takes advantage with a dropkick. Colin then charges at Henry, but Henry rams into the poor guy knocking him right off his feet. After Henry hits a headbutt, Henry continues the punishment with a gorilla-press slam. Henry mocks the little guy and hits the Worlds Strongest Slam. Henry covers and Delaney kicks out!!! Wait no he doesn’t…this one is over folks. (Rating: 2/5. A disappointing squash main event. Nothing need be said.)
Post-Match: Dreamer enters the ring and tries to wake Delaney up as Henry celebrates in the ramp way.
Quick-Match Results: - Matt Hardy, Finlay, & Hornswoggle def. John Morrison, Miz, & Chavo Guerrero (6-Man Tag Match) -Atlas Ortiz def. Armando Estrada -Mark Henry def. Colin Delaney
Highlight of the Night: 6-Man Tag Match
Tonight’s show was a devastating one in my opinion folks. The absence of Punk, Kane, even Evan Bourne is really starting to hurt this show. No disrespect to Hardy or Finlay, but they are not even main event type worthy superstars. The WWE Draft hurt this show more than it did benefit. I’m disappointed. Final Rating: 4/10 (Lackluster. D+)
I had hoped my final ECW report would have been one with excitement. Though that may not be the case, I look forward on moving over to the SmackDown! reports. I will begin my duties on Friday nights beginning July 11th. As always, I’m sure Christopher will bring with him the absolute best style of writing he can offer. Thank you and goodbye!
