Smackdown Results 4/17/08 - A Rivalry Reborn

    Before the start of the report I would like to ask for the viewers to please forgive me of my absent of last weeks report. My whole cable went out and I was not able to write the report. Once again I am truly sorry.

    Okay now that I have apologized, welcome to the report on the show that is changing Friday nights, Friday night Smackdown! I am your Smackdown! reporter Christopher Huynh here to give you the up and up on what exactly went on during the show. Now without further introductions let’s get down to the Smackdown!

    Smackdown! is brought to you from London, England!

    Tonight’s show opens up with Chris Jericho lighting up the stage and entering the ring for the highlight reel.

    Highlight Reel Segment w/ special guest Batista.

    Jericho introduces the fans to the highlight reel. He goes on to state that he is going to be the special guest referee for the Batista vs. Shawn Michaels match at Backlash. He then introduces Batista.

    Batista makes his way down for the Highlight Reel.

    Jericho first talks about Batista’s match against Undertaker tonight. He states that he has been study up on Batista and states that Batista hates Michaels for being a “phony”. Then he goes on to talk about how Michaels retired Flair and roles the footage of his interview with Michaels on Monday night Raw. Jericho states that Michaels just proved that Jericho and Batista are right. He states that because of what he did he got the answer Batista wanted. He then says your welcome. Batista states that he doesn’t need Jericho and that he can handle people himself. Batista goes on to states that this is between him and Michaels. Jericho cuts to the chase and Jericho states that it’s odd that Batista is acting odd from Flair’s retirement. He then goes on to state the reason why Batista is upset is because he wanted to retire Flair himself. He then goes on to state he wanted to carry on the torch and not Michaels. Jericho states that the fact is that Flair chose Michaels and not Batista. He goes on to talk about how the reaction of the “I love you” statement Michaels said to Flair on his farewell address. He then goes on to ask the fans certain questions that are to intimidate Batista. Batista sets up Jericho for a powerbomb and leaves him on the mat.

    Overall Segment Rating: Good way to start off the show and what a way to hype up the Batista vs. Michaels match. Now let’s see what happens later on tonight with the Batista vs. Taker match. The segment gets 8.5 out of 10 stars.

    **King of the ring promo**

    We come back and Matt Hardy heads out to do commentary for the next match.

    Tommy Dreamer is currently in the ring.

    U.S Champion MVP makes his way to the ring.

    Match #1: MVP vs. Tommy Dreamer

    The match starts off with both men locking up. MVP ends up pushing Dreamer off and taunting him. They lock up again and this time Dreamer returns the favor. They go fist for fist and Dreamer gets the best of it and whips MVP off the ropes and back body drops him. Dreamer locks in an armlock and MVP gets to the ropes. MVP uses the ropes to gain the advantage on Dreamer while he was distracted. MVP then goes for the pin to get a two count. MVP goes for a neckbreaker to put the pressure on Dreamer. MVP goes for the pin 1…2…NO! Dreamer managed to get out. MVP drags Dreamer’s head under the ropes lift him up from the legs and hits a guillotine. MVP picks him up and starts to use his knee to smack him in the head. MVP locks in a headlock and fans cheer for Dreamer. Dreamer gets up to a vertical base and pounds his way out. MVP whips Dreamer of the ropes and punches him in the abdominal region and goes for a quick pin to get a one count. MVP starts to pound on Dreamer on the mat and gets another quick pin for a one count. MVP sets Dreamer up in a weird armlock and Dreamer fights his way out. MVP hits a head buster and hits the ballin’ elbow and goes for the pin and gets a two count. He goes to the top rope and jumps off attempting a double axe handle smash but Dreamer catches him with a fist. Dreamer starts to clothesline him and hits a bulldog to put down MVP. He hits the neckbreaker and goes for the pin to get a two count. Dreamer lifts MVP up and MVP elbows Dreamer in the head. MVP goes for the playmaker and Dreamer turns it into a DDT and goes for the pin. He gets the 1…2…NO!!! MVP gets his hands on the bottom rope! Dreamer stets up for the Dreamer Driver, but MVP throws him into the ring pole. MVP hits his boot while Dreamer is in the corner and gets the 1…2…3!

    The winner of the match is MVP!

    Overall Match Rating: It was a great match. It had its good points and it’s bad, but overall it was an exciting match. Hopefully they move the direction of the Matt/MVP feud into a little bit more physical approach. The match gets 3 out of 5 stars.

    We cut to the back with Finlay and Hornswoggle getting psyched because Hornswoggle’s match is next.

    **Edge vs. Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash**

    Matt Striker gets on the mic in the ring and states that he was embarrassed by Finlay and his son Hornswoggle. He states that it isn’t even far tonight because he has to fight Hornswoggle tonight. He states that it isn’t fun because of all his degrees. Hornswoggle interrupts Striker and heads to the ring.

    Match #2: Hornswoggle vs. Matt Striker

    The match starts with Hornswoggle grabbing tennis balls out of his shirt and juggles them. With Striker distracted Hornswoggle throws the tennis balls at him. Hornswoggle then starts to pull some weird items to use on Striker thanks to Finlay. Hornswoggle ends it with a water gun. Hornswoggle starts to spray Striker with it. While Hornswoggle was distracting the referee Striker baseball slides Finlay on the outside. Finlay gets back up and sets up Striker on the ring apron. Hornswoggle on the side mat jumps on Striker. Hornswoggle gets back in the ring and starts to pummel Hornswoggle on the mat. Striker takes the shillelagh and attempts to hit Hornswoggle with it but the referee stops him from hitting his target. While the referee was distracted Finlay enters the ring and hits Striker with the shillelagh. Hornswoggle hits the tadpole splash and gets the 1...2...3!

    The winner is Hornswoggle!

    Overall Match Rating: The match was just way to keep the fans entertained for a while with some fun little antics. The match however didn’t have much to it except for Finlay interrupting. The match gets 2 out of 5 stars.

    Michael Cole and Coach talk about how Hornswoggle is in the WWE Kids magazine.

    We cut backstage and big show is being interviewed. They run a clip of the peace offering Khali has to offer with big show ending with Show punching out Khali. Big show states that he is not interested with a peace offering with the Great Khali. He goes on to say that he will finish what he started. He says that tonight the world’s strongest man will have to use all that strength to match up with the Big Show.

    Chavo Guerrero enters the arena with his body guard accompanying him.

    They run a clip of what happened between Kane and the guard ten days ago

    Jamie Noble heads out to the ring.

    Match #3: Chavo Guerrero vs. Jamie Noble

    The match starts with them locking up. Chavo gets a body wrap on Noble and Noble takes him over. Chavo gets back in the game with a side headlock. Chavo whips Noble off the ropes and gets him back to the mat with another side headlock. Noble fights out and gets Chavo in an armlock. Chavo pushes Noble into a corner and backs out. Chavo goes for a quick kick but Noble catches it and goes for a quick pin and gets a two. He gets another pin attempt and gets a two count. Chavo gets back and sets up a gory bomb on the ropes and it chokes out Noble. Chavo then locks in a head lock. Noble punches his way out and runs towards the rope and comes back with a surprise but was quickly stopped with Chavo by lifting up the knee for a kitchen sink. Chavo starts to elbow Noble on the head. Chavo locks in a headlock and starts to punish Noble. Noble gets to a vertical base and knocks Chavo off his feet. Noble starts to throw some fists and whips Chavo off the ropes. Noble hits a few forearms to Chavo’s head. Noble then hits a northern lights suplex with a bridge pin for the 1…2…3! Chavo comes back with the three amigos, but Noble blocks the third suplex and turns it into a neckbreaker. Noble attempts a sharpshooter, but Chavo throws some fists into Noble’s head to make his way out. Noble lifts Chavo over his shoulder, but Chavo manages to get out of it and jumps over the rope and on to the side mat. He pulls on Noble’s head to keep Noble grounded. Chavo heads up to the top rope and hits a frog splash and gets the 1…2…3!

    The winner of the match is Chavo Guerrero!

    Post Match:
    The body guard comes in and hits a full nelson slam on Noble.

    Overall Match Rating: These two competitors seem to be on level with one another. The match was well balanced and blows were shared equally amongst the two. It had a lot of high speed moves and if you took your eyes away from the television you would miss about half the action. The match gets 2.5 out of 5 stars.

    Big Show and Mark Henry head out for their match and it is next!

    We come back and Michael Cole starts to talk about the King of the Ring.

    The World’s Strongest Man Mark Henry heads to the ring.

    The World’s Biggest athlete the Big Show enters the ring.

    Match #4: Big Show vs. Mark Henry

    The match starts with both men locking up. It remains a stalemate and they push out from each other. They lock up once more and it remains a stalemate. Henry starts to pound on Show and Show comes back with a head butt. Henry comes back with one of his own and Show hits a clothesline. He sets Henry in the corner for a giant slap. Henry lifts show off the ground and locks in bear hug. Show starts to struggle and throws a fist on the forehead of Henry. Henry pushes Show into a corner because he knows the Bear hug was about to be broken. Show comes back and hits a chokeslam to Henry. The Great Khali comes into the arena and Show goes down to confront him. They punch it out and Khali hits a chop to the head.

    The winner of the match by disqualification the Big Show!

    Post match:
    Khali gets Show in the ring and sets up a Khali Bomb and Show tries to fight it out. Khali manages to pick up the Big Show and slams him down to the mat.

    Overall Match Rating: This match had the potential to be a great match, but I guess that this took a major turn for the Khali/Big Show feud. The match was great but I think that they could have at least made it go on a little bit longer. The match gets 2.5 out of 5 stars.

    Undertaker vs. Batista later on tonight

    We come back and they run a replay of the giant slam Khali did to the Big Show. They then run a clip of the Big Show leaving the ring in an injured fashion.

    They then run the match card for Backlash.

    They then start to talk about how the Undertaker will face Batista later on tonight. They run a clip of this legendary rivalry leading up from their match at Wrestlemania 23 to Cyber Sunday.

    **WWE confrontation of the week which is a video footage of Victoria introducing Natalie Neidhart**

    Cherry heads out to the ring accompanied by Michelle McCool

    Victoria enters the ring accompanied by Natalie Neidhart

    Match #5: Victoria vs. Cherry

    The match starts with Victoria giving cherry the first shot. She only tricks her and pushes her off her feet. Victoria then locks in a headlock and grounds Cherry on the floor. Victoria then picks her up and drops her down with a shoulder bock. Victoria starts to kick Cherry down on the ground and slaps her in the face. Victoria picks her up and cherry slaps Victoria in the face. She then kicks her in the abdominal area but Victoria comes back and punishes Cherry to the ground. Victoria whips Cherry to the turnbuckle and rushes at her. Cherry jumps up and rolls her up for a school boy pin attempt for a two count. Victoria quickly gets up and kicks her right into the face. She then locks in a camel clutch. The match continues and Victoria then starts to work on Cherry all in the corner.
    She over hand drops her to the mat and starts to lift her up for a front slam. Cherry crawls over to McCool for some advice and Victoria throws her away from her. McCool jumps to the side mat and distracts Victoria. All of a sudden Cherry out of nowhere rolls up Victoria for a pin for the surprising 1…2…3!

    The winner of the match is Cherry!

    Overall Match Rating: The whole match was almost a squash match really. Victoria just completely controlled the match and I really got bored of it 30 seconds into the match. Hopefully they bring this rivalry to a higher level than it is now. The match gets 2 out of 5 stars.

    **Mike Foley Animorphs**
    Match #6: Vladimir Kozlov vs. Leroy (jobber)
    The match starts with Vladimir taking Leroy over with a arm drag. He locks in an armlock. He again arm drags him over and locks in an armlock. Leroy comes back with some fists to the side of the abdominal. Leroy rushes at Vladimir but Vladimir punishes him down. He then works on him in the corner. Vladimir then hits a body to body suplex. He then kicks him straight into the ground. He then sets him up for the Russian rack and gets the 1…2…3!

    The winner of the match is Vladimir Kozlov!

    Overall Match Rating: This match was pointless and I saw no value to it. It was just another squash match that only lasted about 5 minutes. I recommend the writers bringing Vladimir another much tougher opponent than jobbers. The match gets 1 out of 5 stars.

    **They run a promo of the Undertaker/Edge feud**

    Taker vs. Batista is next!

    Edge and the Edgeheads head to the front row seats for the Taker vs. Batista match

    The animal Batista heads out to the ring.

    World Heavyweight Champion Undertaker enters the ring.

    Match #7: Batista vs. Undertaker

    The match begins with both men locking up. Batista gets put into the corner and Undertaker throws some fists into Batista’s abdominal section. Taker gets whipped into the opposite corner. Batista comes running at Taker but Batista gets hit by a clothesline from Taker. Taker goes for the pin and gets a two count. Batista starts to gain some quick momentum and gets a few quick pins in that only get two counts. Batista starts to work on Taker on the ropes with a couple of fists. Batista whips him off the ropes and Taker comes back with a DDT that lays Batista and Taker flat on the mat. Taker goes for the pin to get the 1…2…NO!!! Batista manages to get the shoulder up. Taker starts to wear down Batista’s shoulders and throws Batista’s shoulder right into the top turnbuckle. Taker starts to open up some fists on Batista in the corner. Taker locks in a armlock using the ropes and breaks it at the count of four. Taker throws Batista back into the corner and throws a few fists into his face. Taker sets up an old school, but Batista knocks him down with a fist. Batista hits a clothesline and gets a two count. Batista whips Taker of the ropes and both men knock each other down to the mat with a clothesline.

    We come back and see that both men are going fist for fist and Taker hits a giant boot to the head of Batista and Batista goes down. Taker locks in a headlock but he has to break it because Batista is on the bottom rope. Taker starts to work on the arm of Batista with a few fists and shoulder blocks. Taker sets up another old school and yet again Batista punches him down. Batista climbs onto the top rope with Taker and starts to pound on him. Taker knocks Batista down but Batista gets back up with Taker and hits a superplex that sends both men down to the mat and hard. Batista goes for the pin and gets the 1…2…NO!!!!!! Taker quickly locks in a headlock and Batista’s shoulders are down on the mat. Taker gets a one count on Batista. Taker starts to headbutt Batista’s shoulder. Taker goes for old school and this time manages to hit it. The third times a charm. He throws Batista out of the ring. Taker follows and sets Batista up on the side of the mat. He hits a leg drop right across the throat of Batista and Batista is laid out on the floor. Taker lifts him up and throws him into the ring. He goes for the pin to get a two count. Taker sets up a tombstone piledriver, but Batista gets out of it and hits a spear on Taker. Batista covers for the 1…2…NO!!!! Batista and Taker go fist for fist again. It ends with Batista ducking a fist from Taker and clothesline Taker over the top rope. Taker pulls Batista out of the ring and throws Batista’s head on the steel steps. Taker lifts Batista up and they go fist for fist outside of the ring. The referee reaches the 10 count and the match is over by count out.

    The match ended with a No-Contest!

    Post match: Both men start to battle out of the ring. Taker sets up Batista on the announce table and throws his head on it. Taker then throws Batista in the barricade. Batista then throws a fist to Taker and throws Taker’s head into the barricade. Taker pulls Edge from out of the crowd and into the ring. The Edgeheads come in and start to help battle Taker. Taker manages to take out the Edgeheads with Batista’s help. Batista gets into the ring and Edge quickly gets up and hits Batista straight into his face. Edge looks terrified and tries to explain to Batista that it was an accident. Taker heads in and they start to fight amongst each other. The Edgeheads come in and Batista and Taker start to take out everyone out of the ring. Chavo and his body guard head to the ring, but Batista and Taker take care of them quickly. All that remains in the ring is the both of them. Vickie comes out and states that Batista and Undertaker have jeopardized the company by attacking Edge and the Edgeheads. She then states that they could press civil suites against them. She states that next week it will be Batista vs. Undertaker for the World Heavy weight Championship. She states that the winner of next weeks match on Smackdown! will face Edge at Backlash. Both men stare at each other in the ring and the show closes out.

    Overall Match Rating: This match was really amazing as usual between these two. The action was thrilling and was a great way to close out the show. I am already psyched for next week’s match. The match gets 4 out of 5 stars.

    The winner of the match is Vladimir Kozlov! (Wins after hitting Russian Rack)

    Match #7: Batista vs. Undertaker
    The match ended with a No-Contest! (Via Count-Out)

    Smack of the night! (Match of the night): Has to be the main event because of the great action and thrilling rivalry between these two collide. It had the action packed thrill of the night.

    Segment of the night: Goes to the Highlight Reel. This rivalry is just heating up and I anxious to see the match at Backlash.
    Biggest impact of the night: This one goes to Khali bomb on Big Show. You should have seen the ring wobble when he did so.

    Overall Show Rating: Tonight’s show was alright but could be improved by losing all the jobber matches and making some matches last a bit longer. Tonight’s show gets 6.5 out of 10 stars.

    What is going to happen between this MVP and Matt Hardy feud. Will Jericho have anything to say about Batista’s reaction? What role does Edge play in the world title match next week?
