The WWE debuted in Danville, Illinois on March 2nd to a standing room only
crowd (5,000-6,000) at the Palmer Civic center. I attended recent house
shows in neighboring Champaign which drew 5,000-8,000 at the much bigger
Assembly Hall which made last nights show feel more like an old ECW
atmosphere. Triple H and Umaga were advertised but did not appear.
(1) *DH Smith / Super Crazy over Charlie Haas / Trevor Murdoch*: Crazy was
over big with the crowd and Smith looked ok though a little confused at
times. Haas dawned a mask half way through the match and appeared to be
doing a Mr. Wrestling II impersonation. Smith pinned Haas with a running
power slam.
(2) *Paul Burchill w/ Katie Lea over Hacksaw Jim Duggan:* About a 10 min
match which is pretty good for Hacksaw these days. He really cant move much
at all but its nice to still see him after all this time. First Duggan live
in 1988. Nothing special match wise. Burchill looks alot like a young Val
Venis and Katie Lea is really stunning in person. She looks alot better
than on tv I would say.
(3) *Snitsky over Brian Kendrick*: This was the surprise of the evening.
Not a Snitsky fan at all but he really came to work and had a solid 10-12
min match that he won with a pump handle slam.
(4) *Cody Rhodes / Hardcore Holly over Santino Morella and Carlito* : Some
nice mic work from Santino who declared he was in Kentucky and then went on
about Maria in playboy. Rhodes is impressive looking but just wasn't over
much. Holly had a big following in my section with several people even
remembering his days as Sparky Plug. Rhodes pinned Morella after a bulldug.
Intermission.
(*5) Maria /Mickie James over Beth Phoenix / Gillian*: Candance came down
and distracted Beth allowing Maria to get the pin. Nothing to exciting
match wise though its hard to complain when you have five women in the ring
that attractive. Mickie looked like she had really been in the gym lately
and Beth is genuinely a powerful yet extremely attractive woman. They
really need to find some opponents for her. Gillian sang a little which was
hilarious. In spite of being from Chicago and in Playboy Maria wasn't
especially over. Mickie got a good pop though.
(*6) Chris Jericho over Kennedy*: Tough match for me because Im a big fan
of both. Y2J won by tap out with the walls. Nice back and forth. All the
signature moves on both sides. Kennedy opened with some good mic work and
was hilarious when the mic didn't drop from the ceiling on his intro.
Easily the match of the night.
(*7) Randy Orton over Jeff Hardy*: Hardy was over huge in Champaign in
September but not so much tonight. Orton got a mixed response but was
especially over with the ladies near the ring. About a 15 min match with
Orton winning on an RKO. Hardy hit the swonton after the match, but overall
a very standard match between the two.
*Overall: * A nice evening but the event seemed rushed at a little over 2
hours and there was alot of disappointment over an advertised 8th match not
taking place. A good start but things will have to be better for there
return visit.
*Biggest Pop*
*(*1) Y2J
(2) Super Crazy
(3) Mickie James
*Most Heat*
(1) Kennedy
(2) Snitsky
(3) Orton
