    ECW on Sci-Fi
    Tuesdays 10/9 CT

Corpus Christi, Texas : American Bank Center

We begin with a recap of CM Punk interfeering in Chavos Championship Fiesta and eventually nailing Chavo in the head with a guitar.

After the ECW video package and fireworks, CM Punk makes his way down to the ring and grabs a mic. Punk shows the video clip of the Fiesta once more and lets the audience and more importantly, Chavo know that tonight he is officially envoking his rematch clause for the ECW Championship. Chavo’s music hits the arena and he is disgusted. Chavo says that Punk humiliated Chavo’s culture and heritage and he will get Punk back. However, he says that he will defend the title at No Way Out. As for tonight, Chavo tells everyone to look at the titantron.

GM Estrada is shown standing in the Gulf Coast area and he says that tonight Chavo and CM Punk will face off in a Gulf of Mexico Match where you have to literally toss your opponent into the Gulf to win the match. In additon, Extreme Rules apply.

Chavo looks happy and says that tonight he is going make Punk drown!

    Match 1: Victoria & Layla w/Lena v. Kelly & Michelle McCool
I’m sorry for the lack of description for the following match, but it pretty much begins with a lockup between Layla and Kelly and Kelly dominates until Layla tags in Victoria. As a result, Kelly goes and tags in McCool and the two divas battle it out to a good reaction from the crowd. The end came when Lena Yada tripped Kelly and Victoria capitalized off the distraction and got the 3 count. (Rating: 2.5/5. This was actually better than a lot of the divas matches we have seen on ECW in quite some time. The lack of detail was due to a phone call I had to take, but nonetheless, nice job ladies.)

    Match 2: Tommy Dreamer w/Collin Delaney v. Morrison w/Miz
Crowd is hot for the ECW original. Match begins with Dreamer getting an early shoulder takedown and proceeds to lock in a brief armbar. Moments later, Morrison strikes with a few kicks and eventually hits an amazing leaping kick where Dreamer lands outside of the ring. At this point, Morrison goes out and mocks Delaney. Dreamer backs up Delaney, but Miz appears and mocks Dreamer allowing Morrison to strike while Dreamers back is turned. Moments later, Morrison attempts to hit a corkscrew moonsault but misses. Dreamer covers for only a 2 count. Miz tries coming in to cause a distraction, but Delaney grabs Miz. Miz shoves him right into the barricade, but Dreamer hits a baseball slide knocking Miz off his feet. Meanwhile, Morrison recooperates and hits his corkscrew neckbreaker for the win. (Rating: 3/5. Pretty good match. Its good to see Dreamer back and neither team looked too weak to the other. I can see a few fights left between these 4 men. Maybe even a title match).

Tazz & Styles inform us about Stevie Richards who has been out of action since October due to neck surgery. We are then shown an interview between Styles and Richards.

Basically we are shown a video dating back to May 1997 in Buffalo New York when a steel rail was dropped against the back of the neck of Richard and that’s when all the problem began. He had to receive a vocal cord implant and 9 surgerys in the process. However, when asked why does he come back and still want to wrestle, Richard responds by saying that he loves to compete and he finally returns next week! He gets emotional as we cut to break. (Get well Richards!)

Match 3: James Curtis v. Kofi Kingston
The two lockup, but neither man can budge the other. Curtis grabs Kingston’s head and attempts a headlock. Curtis then runs to the ropes and takes down Kingston with a shoulderblock. Curtis tries again, but this time, Kingston pops up and hits a quick armdrag takedown. Kingston flips around like a cat to get the advantage and begins to dominate the match. There comes a point when Curtis ties up Kingston’s arm, but Kingston literally jumps over the rope onto the apron and jumps back into the ring to counter the hold and hit a haymaker. Kingston proceeds to hit a modified reverse leap frog into a back elbow. With Curtis down in the middle of the ring, Kingston hits his version of the double leg drop. In the corner, Kingston leaps onto Curtis (like in position of a hurricanrana) and hits a few punches onto Curtis’s head. As a groggy Curtis walks forward, Kingston hits the Cool Runnings (540 Kick) for the win. (Rating: 3/5.)

Tazz & Styles go over the No Way Out card.

Match 4: Chavo Guerrero v. CM Punk (Gulf of Mexico Match)
Punk starts off by nailing a backclub and several mid-range kicks. Punk immediately throws Chavo out of the ring and the two battle it out there for quite some time. Chavo strikes with a few punches and sends Punk to the steel steps. He then uppercuts Punk over the barricade and the two fight in the audience. Chavo then rams Punk into the barricade and a few chairs a couple of times. Punk tries fighting back with a few headbutts and strikes with a few more backclubs. Chavo then just grabs Punk and launches Punk onto a second barricade abdomen first. Punk fights back again with body strikes and jumps off the barricade connecting with a flying clothesline. Punk proceeds to hit a body slam on the steel floor and signals towards the Gulf. Cameras follow as the two battle it out in the lobby area. Chavo is slammed on the doors and continues to take a beating where they wind up in the streets. A car comes by and nearly runs over the two superstars, but stops and horns. Punk, who is distracted by this, is attacked by Chavo and eventually is launched on top of the car’s hood, breaking the windshield in the process. Chavo tries climbing on top of the car’s hood, but Punk shoves Chavo off with his feet and Chavo crashes into the cameraman as we go to our last break.

Back, we see Punk in control as he delivers a few knee shots to Chavo. Momentarily, Punk proceeds to slam Chavo on a van’s hood. After a few more counters, Punk hurls Chavo right into the vans windshield and breaking it in the process as well. The two continue to fight as Chavo regains momentum and throws Punk over the freeway wall about 10 feet below. Some guys in the back can be seen fishing and they are enjoying the fight, but eventually walk away. Chavo begins trash talking saying that Punk has to earn a title rematch. Chavo strikes with numerous abdomen kicks and Punk is hurt. Chavo tries throwing Punk into the Gulf, but Punk fights off. Chavo is frustrated and attempts to three-amigo Punk right into the Gulf. Punk stops at the last minute and lifts Chavo up and hits the GTS as Chavo falls into the water losing the match. (Rating: 4.5/5. Excellent and very interesting match. This match reminded me of the classic battles between Holly/Snow when they fought in the Mississippi River Area. This match has deserved to be my highest rated ECW match up to date!)

Post-Match: Chavo is drowing as Punk celebrates to end the show.

Overall, tonight’s show was tremendous. The Gulf of Mexico was really exciting and unique. Congrats to the WWE Creative Team members. This has been the best ECW to call since I became the reporter. Goodbye and Take care! 7.5/ 10.
