    ECW on Sci-Fi Results: 01/29/08
    Tuesdays 10/9 CT
    Reading, PA : Sovereign Center

We begin with a recap of the whole Chavo/Punk rivalry and how the long weeks beforehand culminated to Chavo winning the ECW Championship last week.

After the ECW video package, Styles & Tazz welcome us to ECW on HD! We are told that later tonight we will all celebrate Chavo Guerrero’s Championship Fiesta.

Pyro’s go off and Kane makes his way down to the ring. His opponent is none other than Shelton Benjamin.

Match 1: Kane v. Shelton Benjamin
Benjamin begins by dodging a punch and delivering a few punches of his own. But no effect to the monster and Kane knocks Benjamin done with a few clotheslines and uppercut. Kane then proceeds to clothesline Benjamin right out of the ring. Moments later and back in the ring, Kane goes up to hit his clothesline, but Benjamin leaps up to the top rope and armdrags Kane down to the mat. Benjamin strikes with a few kicks and eventually smashing Kane’s leg to the ring post. Benjamin has Kane grounded for quite some time. Fans begin to get behind for Kane. Kane, unable to build momentum, finds himself locked in numerous leg submission holds. Finally, Kane manages to roll to his back and gets to a position where he grabs Benjamin by the throat and gets up. He then tosses Benjamin to the corner and puts a beatdown on him. Kane slams Benjamin only for a 2 count. Kane then hits a backslam and hits his signature flying clothesline from the top. Kane signals for the chokeslam, but Benjamin kicks Kane, but Kane blocks it, but then finally Benjamin strikes with a roundhouse kick. Benjamin goes up top, but Kane gets up and grabs Benjamin by the throat once more. Benjamin counters by choking Kane on the ropes and charges right towards Kane but only to be struck with a big boot knocking Benjamin back to the outside. Benjamin has had enough and walks to the back as the referee counts him out. (Rating: 3/5. A very good opening bout. These two men have great potential to put on a long-lasting rivalry and from the looks of it, this will continue for at least another few weeks.)

Kelly is shown heading down to the ring.

WWE Slam of the Week: We are shown a clip of last week’s Best Body Contest.

Match 2: Victoria v. Kelly Kelly
As the bell rings, Lena & Leyla make their way down to the ring to cause the obvious distraction. A few shoves between Kelly and Victoria, but Victoria gets the better and knocks Kelly off her feet. For the next 5 or so minutes, Victoria is in complete domination of Kelly. Victoria wins the match after delivering the Widow’s Peak.
After the match, Lena & Leyla come into the ring and further beat down Kelly.

(Rating: 2/5. Uh…not good with very little momentum shifts)

Colin Delaney is shown in the back looking cautious.

Royal Rumble preview plays how John Cena made his return from injury to toss Triple H over the ropes to win the match and earn his rightful place for a championship opportunity. (Cena = Ratings! Despite what people think of him, Cena just adds to the great collection of superstars RAW has to offer)

Back in the ring, Taz is with Colin Delaney and eventually Taz tells the poor bandaged guy that tonight he is in a Handicap Match against the Tag Team Champions.

(I’m not sure what happened at this point, but my DVR just froze and the viewing did not come back until the Punk/Burke match. I apologize, so the next match summary is from WWE.com)

Match 3: Colin Delaney v. Miz & Morrison
A battered and heavily-bandaged Colin Delaney finally found a savior of sorts on this week’s ECW – Tommy Dreamer. It was the newcomer’s sixth time in the ECW ring, and after losing another match – this time a brutal Handicap Match against WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison – Delaney was aided by the ECW Original. Has the youngster finally caught a break – and a found an ally – in Dreamer?

Match 4: CM Punk v. Elijah Burke
Crowd is hot for Punk. Punk grabs Burke in a headlock and eventually hip toss’s Burke which is immediately followed by a body slam. Burke somehow kicks Punk and flips over the ropes onto the apron. Weird. He goes up top and hits a shoulder-block for a 2 count. In the corner, Burke strikes with many body punches and proceeds to back suplex Punk. Burke applies a headlock body scissors and keeps Punk down for quite some time. After making it to his feet, Punk shoves off Burke and hits his knee to the face in the corner. Punk attempts to hit the bulldog, but Burke pushes Punk to the ropes and after a few counters, Punk literally catches Burke right on top of his shoulders and hits the GTS for the win. (Rating: 3/5. These guys are two great athletes and always deliver whenever they meet face to face. Congrats to both men.

At this point, we are taken back to Sunday at the Royal Rumble and shows a footage of the Mysterio/Edge match. It shows that Rey ‘mistakenly’ hits Vickie with the 619, but allowing Edge to hit a devastating mid-air spear for the win off the distraction.

Match 5: Kofi Kingston v. Rob
Kingston begins with a headlock which is then followed by innovative shoulder takedowns and eventually a hip toss. Rob tries to fight back with an arm submission, but Kingston counters and hits an amazing leg sweep and pops right back up (similar to HBK) to his feets. Another headlock is applied by Kingston. Minutes later, Kingston strikes with several strike attacks and finishes it off with a high arching drop kick. Kingston then hits his version of what is a double leg drop and proceeds to hit the Cool Runnings (540 kick) for the victory. Rating: 2.5. A decent match put together. I honestly rather prefer Kingston fight actual WWE Superstars rather than jobbers.)

After the match, we are shown a mariachi band backstage about to make their way down to the ring for Chavo’s Fiesta.

    -Commercial-

The mariachi band plays for quite some time and then GM Armando Estrada finally welcomes the NEW ECW World Champion -- Chavo Guerrero. Red & Green balloons drop from the rafter as the champion makes his way down to the ring.

Chavo makes his way down to the ring wearing a tuxedo and looks very excited. As he enters the ring, GM Estrada informs Chavo that both Edge & Vickie are at the hospital because of what Mysterio did to Vicki at the Royal Rumble. However, Estrada says, Edge did send Chavo a pre-recorded video.

The video rolls on the titan-tron and Edge appears. He apologizes to Chavo for being unable to be with Chavo tonight and states that their officially a championship family now and he excited to spend his life with the Guerrero’s. He then shows a tribute video to Chavo winning the championship.

Chavo is delighted and then tells the fan that he “told you so” that he was going to become a world champion in 2008 and that Punk is nothing more than a stepping stone. The mariachi band plays again and Chavo says something in Spanish as he begins to dance. Chavo goes up to the top rope and demands the people to clap for him and continues to dance some more. At this time, the director of the mariachi band turns around and smashes Chavo in the head with a guitar. Who could it be? After taking off the sombrero and fake mustache, the director revealed himself to be none other than CM Punk disguised as a member of the band. Punk grabs the ECW Championship Title from Chavo’s waist and raises it up claiming that he wants it back as Chavo is left unconscious on the mat.

    Quick Match Results:
-Kane defeats Shelton Benjamin via Countout
    -Victoria defeats Kelly
-Miz & Morrison defeat Colin Delaney
    -CM Punk defeats Elijah Burke
    -Kofi Kingston defeats Rob
    -Chavo Guerrero’s Championship Fiesta

Highlight of the Night: CM Punk smashes Chavo over the head with a guitar.

Todays show was decent from what I saw. Nothing too good, but nothing too bad either with the exception of the divas match. The Chavo/Punk feud is really heating up and the execution of the last scene was good and different. Once again I apologize for my DVR’s troubling. Take Care! 5.5/10
