I sincerely apologize for the delay! Please believe me when I say, I was extremely busy and it was difficult for me to do the report on Jan 1st. I threw this altogether yesterday and it looked like garbage to me, so I redid the report making it better than what it was before. Once again, I apologize and I promise next week won’t be a disappointment.
Happy New Years! Tonight is the very first ECW of 2008. What does this mean for the superstars of ECW? Lets find out!
We begin with a recap of 2 weeks ago when Chavo Guerrero came in after the Punk/MVP match and assaulted CM Punk.
After the ECW video package, Joey Styles & Tazz welcome us to ECW and we see GM Estrada in the ring. Estrada on mic, introduces Chavo Guerrero.
Chavo grabs mic and claims that its great to be back on ECW. He talks about his controversial altercation he had with Punk. So then he goes on and answers why he was behind that attack. He said he was sick to hear people talk about Punk and he just couldn’t take it anymore. Moments later, Punk makes his way down to the ring and the two have a verbal dispute. Chavo says Punk is nothing but a stepping stone for him and says in 2008 he will be the ECW champion. Punk claims he is no stepping stone and tells Chavo if he wants a fight, he right in front of him. GM Estrada says Chavo has to earn a title shot and he has to do it by first beating CM Punk in a non-title matchup later on tonight. (A good type of opening segment from my perspective that we didn’t see in quite some time on ECW.)
We are told we will have a 6-Person Tag Team Contest up next.
Match 1: John Morrison, Miz, & Layla v. Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore, & Kelly
Kelly and Layla start off. Layla gets the upper hand until Kelly strikes back with clothesline. Miz trips Kelly while the ref is distracted by Morrison. Minutes later, Kelly slaps Morrison and runs to her corner with Moore with a leaping splash on Morrison. Few minutes later, Miz is tagged in and Moore is in beaten down with clotheslines and numerous double team moves by both Miz and Morrison. Finally Moore makes the hot tag to Yang and Yang nails tiltawhirl and he begins to dominate. Yang nails spinning kicks and flys off the top rope and has tremendous momentum. Layla tries hitting Yang from the back, but Yang simply gives her a kiss for her troubles. Crowd goes crazy. Yang then goes on to hit his leaping moonsault on Miz for the win. (Rating: 3/5. Some fast action between the superstars and the divas keeping the storyline intact. Crowd really got into the match when Yang delivered that kiss on Layla. I thought it was hilarious.)

Tazz is shown in the ring about to interview Collin Delaney (the guy who lost to Shelton Benjamin 2 weeks ago). He said he was nervous, but as for tonight he is much more confident and plans on becoming a WWE superstar in 2008. Tazz introduces his opponent as Big Daddy V.
Match 2: Collin Delaney v. Big Daddy V
Delaney is trapped in the corner from the get-go and is then slapped across his chest. A few minutes later, Big V stands on top of the Delaney just crushing the poor guy. Afterwards, Big V lifts Delaney up and slams him into the mat which is then followed by a samoan drop and then finally a giant elbow drop for the victory. (Rating: 1.5/5. Bad match. Simply a squash match to put Big V over.)

Match 3: James Curtis v. Shelton Benjamin
Before the match actually begins, Benjamin was shown in an earlier interview where he talked about his New Year’s Resolution. He simply says he will show everyone his value and will hit the mother-load when he becomes the gold standard later in the year.
As the match starts, Benjamin drops Curtis face-first into the mat and then proceeds to tackle him into the corner. Eventually he hits a T-bone suplex. Curtis struggles to build momentum and is not only hit, but countered with a backbreaker. Benjamin then locks in several different submission holds with the last being a chickenwing crossface and Curtis cannot grasp for air. After a series of failing counters, Curtis is booted in the face and powerbombed onto the turnbuckle. Finally Benjamin hits his inverted bulldog for the 1-2-3. (Rating: 2.5/5. Decent action between the two. Though it was slow at times, the finish was pretty good with the way Benjamin powerbombed Curtis onto the turnbuckle.)

Match 4: Chavo Guerrero v. CM Punk
Bell rings and we start off with the crowd chanting for Punk. Punk immediately armdrags Chavo and takes him off his feet. Punk tries to lock in an armbar, but Chavo counters that, but then is countered and finds himself locked in a headlock scissors. Chavo gets the bottom rope and both men stare down once more. This time after following a second lockup and after some more technical wrestling, Punk sidesteps Chavo, manages to sweep him, but appears to hurt his knee in the process. Moments later, Chavo is in control and strikes Punk with a few chops and punches. However Punk retaliates with a few chops and punches of his own and proceeds to hit a high cross body as we go to break.

Back, we see Punk still dominating the match as he hits a running knee strike to Chavo’s abdomen. Punk goes for a kick to Chavo in the corner, but Chavo grabs Punk’s leg and strikes it with his elbow. Chavo then kicks Punk’s hurt leg and goes for the cover, but Punk kicks out at 2. Chavo proceeds to lock in a hyper extending like submission hold to Punks knee which is followed up by a deathlock and neckbridge stetches. Crowd gets behind Punk as he gets back to his feet and backdrops Chavo. Chavo gets up and immediately chop blocks Punk’s knee. After a shin breaker and various submission holds hurting Punks knee, Punk finally knees Chavo in the face and regains momentum, but only to be targeted and dropped back down again. Chavo attempts the 3 amigos, but on the third suplex, Punk counters and gets Chavo in position of the GTS but releases Chavo due to the injured knee. At this point, Chavo crossbodies Punk and the two land hard outside of the ring. As Chavo gets up, he tries getting back into the ring, but Punk pulls him back and he runs towards the ring in attempts to avoid the count out. Chavo grabs Punks leg, but Punk kicks Chavo back and the referee completes his 10 count with Chavo losing the match. (Rating 3. Pretty good match between the two with the exception of some of the times this match dragged when Chavo was in control. The finish hopefully still means that there is still something left between the two to work with despite the stipulations made earlier on in the night.)
Post-Match: Punk is happy celebrating while Chavo is heard screaming “that was my chance for the title!”
ECW comes to a close.
Quick Match Results:
-Yang, Shannon Moore, & Kelly defeat John Morrison, Miz, & Layla
-Big Daddy V defeat Collin Delaney
-Shelton Benjamin defeat James Curtis
-CM Punk defeat Chavo Guerrero
Highlight of the Night: CM Punk v. Chavo Guerrero
Overall, the New Year’s kickoff wasn’t all too great, but certainly wasn’t all too bad either. Chavo understands the concept of wrestling which is a good thing. It’s a matter of whether he can deman the crowds attention which I think he needs some work with, but other than that, the Punk/Chavo storyline is off to a good start…something fresh for both men to deal with. The rest of the night was decent. Show rating: 5/10.
