![]() The room shares a common ruckus. What ruckus you ask? The ruckus of excitement – anticipation. The crowd of fans and stars all wait for the host to take the stage to get the show started. Fans fill the upper balcony – no signs, many in shirt and tie. Lower, we can see the Wrestlers of WWE, ROH, and TNA. The date is December 28, 2007 and the year is at its end. Because of this – these people are gathered to sit and reflect on the year that just past. The crowd stands and begins to clap – a man approaches the lector. He clears his throat begins to speak. The host is none other than Silky Johnson – Player Hater of the Year. ![]() Silky: Ladies and Gentlemen – we gather here once a year to celebrate the best, and worst in the wrestling business. This gala affair will exhibit the true best of this business. Also – it will root out the worst of the worst that took place this year. It’s been a year with many highs – but also – some of the lowest of the lows. Tonight – we take a look at both. Yes, tonight – since this Award Show is brought to you by Al Boo Boo – we bring to you “The Boobies”! ![]() Silky: And now – without further ado – I bring you Al Boo Boo – the man who will be announcing these awards. Al Boo Boo: Loyal FNW readers, Welcome to The Boobies – My way of bringing you, as Silky said, the best and worst of 2007. From title changes to injuries. From PPVs to killing your family – this one has everything. So, strap in, strap on, and let’s do it. Our first award is: Biggest Scandal: Benoit Killing himself/family Yes, maybe the biggest scandal in wrestling or even entertainment history – dedicated veteran pulled a double homicide before offing himself in his Atlanta home. To say that this took everyone on this planet by surprise is an understatement. Chris Benoit – the constant professional – all business – just snapped. Nine-year old Daniel, and his wife – one of the better known ladies in this business “woman” both dead at presumably the hands of Benoit. However, the controversy that followed is what made the biggest shockwaves. People realized just how many wrestling stars had been dying – and for weeks we saw wrestler after wrestler on CNNBC, Foxs News, and the rest. Did Benoit’s last who-ra help or hurt wrestling? Though, yes – it gave many the image that wrestlers are violent individuals constantly on the edge, but it also made many cut down on steroids. The results of this scandal are really yet to be written. However, what we do know, is that this was indeed the biggest Scandal that 2007 saw. Fake news story of the year: To go along with this – Benoit’s death being predicted on Wikipedia. DVD Of The Year: “My Life” – John Cena Promotion of The Year: WWE. TNA was garbage most of the year, and ROH hasn’t showed enough to be Number one. This leaves the constant Number One company in the world, WWE. It was a good year for them, and they land this award. Worst Promotion Of The Year: TNA – seriously, until this day, TNA remains one of the only promotions that I have to actually force myself to watch. I DVR the show every single week, and it takes me at least 3 days to actually watch it. Not because I’m busy, just because I can only stand it in small doses. They really earned this award. Fuck you TNA – shape up or get off TV. Most Improved Promotion Of The Year: ROH – They got a PPV deal, and vastly improved their DVD quality. Just buy a simple comparison of their early shows to this years, you can see the huge difference in quality. To go along with that, they’ve embraced more of the “entertainment’ side of Pro-Wrestling. If they keep up this pace, I can see them getting some attention outside of the internetz. Newsbit of the year: We all knew at the end of that Raw that something was wrong with JC – however, none of us expected how bad it would turn out. Only hours after Raw went off the air – the future was clear – Cena would be out for a whole. A long while. However, it didn’t make the news ay easier to handle. Ha – I know that sounds lame – but it was true. This newsbit of Cena being out for 7-10 months – although disappointing – was easily the newsbit of the year. Commentator Of The Year: JBL – the guy showed that he is a natural at the table. He has a future when he finally decided to permanently lace them up. Always entertaining, and made Smackdown enjoyable for much of the year. Worst Commentator Of The Year: Don West – OH MY GOD – THIS IS THEE BEST AWARD EVER SEEN IN THE HISTORY OF AWARDS~! THIS IS ONCE AND A LIFETIME AWARD. I WON’T WIN THIS AWARD EVER EVER EVER AGAAIINN! Yes you will. For as long as Don West is alive and behind a commentation booth – he’ll win this award. I’d rather be stuck between Awesome Kongs flab than hear this guy give color too a match. Seriously, Don – keep screaming – because I hope you have a heart attack. I really do. Best High-Flyer: Jeff Hardy – always putting out 110 percent. The guy kills himself for this award alone – and he deserves more praise than he gets. There just is nor fear in this guy. Most Improved Wrestler Of The Year: MVP – by lightyears. If he continues to improve at this rate – he has a VERY bright future. The character is awesome, and leaves little room for staleness. The man is good – and only getting better. Biggest Downgrade: Chris Benoit – he’s dead. Most Underutilized wrestler – AKA the Samoa Joe award: Samoa Joe – TNA went from “Just give the title to Joe already – to “Ok, at least he’s in the main event” to “Samoa who?” This guy is an awesome talent, and TNA continues to underutilize him. Jow even gained weight because he wasn’t wrestling. Tough break, homey – there’s always the indies. Return/Debut Of The Year: Jericho – although it was a bit disappointing – Jericho had a pretty kick-ass return. Everyone was into the “Save_Us” storyline – and everyone tuned in to see what Jericho had to say when he finally showed up on Raw. Although it wasn’t the promo to end all promos, he delivered what they wanted – an electric 3 minutes on the mic. All in all, it was good – and without a doubt, he was the biggest free agent to return this year. Gimmick of the Year: “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal – many people will disagree (Hi CoLd!) but, I like this guy. Arguments say that it isn’t ‘his’ gimmick and he’s just imitating, I say – who the fuck cares. The guy knows the character, and he does it well. Every time he’s on the camera, I laugh. Sure it’s over the top, but it’s fucking comical. I’m loving the gimmick, and I think it’s a huge testament to it’s awesome-ness if he can keep it up without it getting stale. TV episode of the year: Raw 15th Anny – I personally loved this episode. It was three hours – and every second was packed with something that was either entertaining, or nostalgic. Many times, it was both. A awesome celebration of fifteen years of Raw, with a perfect ending. The best free show in at least 8 years. Worst TV episode of the year: Many-a-TNA. Seriously, too many to list. That, and I probably didn’t see the worst. However, I can say that many that I saw probably gave that one a run for its money. PPV Of The year: ROH – “Man Up” – an awesome card that showcased some of the best that RoH had to offer. Mori vs Danielson - Castagnoli vs. Nigel vs. Marufuji vs. Hero – and not to mention one of the most BRUTAL ladder matches EVER The Briscoes v l Steenerico. An awesome PPV form top to bottom – and a showcase of what RoH can, and will hopefully become. Hon. Mention – Great American Bash (Yay! I was there) Worst PPV Of The year: Lockdown – Shit. Shit. Shit. Tag-Team of the Year: The Briscoes – for anyone who doesn’t follow Ring of Honor or indies in general – if there is one reason you should, it’s these guys. If you enjoy hard hitting action, if you enjoy stiff competition, and if you enjoy wrestling that makes you say “Holy shit, is he ok?”, then these guys are for you. Seriously, the best tag-team in the world – here’s to hoping they can still walk in 5 years. Worst Tag Team Of The Year: Rhodes and Holly – It’s like the WWE creative team thought to themselves “Who are the two blandest guys on the roster” – then they made this tag team. Vanilla + Vanilla does not equal Rainbow Sherbet. Storyline/Feud Of The Year: Mr. McMahon – Dead. The storyline that never was. However, it did have the potential to be something brilliant. Although when it happened, most complained it was stupid – in retrospect, it really was a awesome idea. Sadly, Beniot killed that too. Fucker. Worst Storyline/feud of the year: Hornswaggle v Khali – if it happened once, ok, fine. It’s not a bad idea, could work. But they did this about 4 or 5 times. After the first, it was just lame. There is just no possible way these two can put on a match together, and although it could be a funny segment, every time I happened, it just fell flat. Babyface Of The Year (Most Over): “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson – Everywhere this guy went all you could hear is “Best in the World”. And, it’s well deserved. This guy consistently puts on matches that just take your breath away. His style, his finesse, his charisma, the sheer way he moves around the ring – everything about this ugy makes him the best. Danielson is truly the best in this business, and because of it, the fans love him. Heel Of The Year: Edge. Sadly, my ramblings of hate for this man have since been deleted for the forums. But Jesus fuck did I hate this man to death. I always used to say, if I had one bullet in this world – I’d put it in his head. But – since then – and as much as it pains me to say, he’s won me over. Mostly, it was because of his work this year. The guy just oozes cocky son of a bitch, and now more than ever, he’s doing a great job of portraying exactly that. The world hates this guy – and it’s a good hate – not Khali hate. Worst Match Of The Year: Chris Harris vs James Storm BlindFold Match at Lockdown – I downloaded this match just to see how BAD it was. If you’re on of the more intelligent readers – maybe you can figure out what I thought of it. Hmmm… And now – these are the big ones. The awards that kids dream of winning. These are the ones that mean everything. The bigguns. So without further ado – here are your winners. Match Of The Year: Cena vs Umaga (Royal Rumble) – The sheer story these two told grants this award alone. Every time I watch it, I see something that changes the whole match. With Armando Estrada barking orders from ringside, to Cena calling on the crowd for strength – this match had it all. With the ending just putting the icing on the cake. Awesome match – if you haven’t seen it, find it and download it. If you want, E-mail me, and I’ll try to provide a link. Awesome, awesome, awesome match. Hon. Mention: Cena v HBK (WM and 60-min match). Dragon v Mori (Manhatten Mayhem 2) Briscoes v El Steenerico (Man Up!) HHH v RKO (Last man Standing) Cena – Lashley (GAB) Wrestler Of The Year: John Cena – this guy did it all this year. He stood on the top of almost the whole year – and showed (proved) that he deserved to hold that title. You want to talk about being the best? Cena proved that he could work a match, and have a prominent character. The man just absolutely entertained this year. Match after match, segment after segment. The one thing that made him earn this award was that a lot of the “Haters” that Cena heard in 2006 were now standing on their chairs, cheering him on. Absolutely great year for him – but, would have been worlds better without the injury. Al Boo Boo: So there you have it, folks. The best and worse of what was Two-Thousand and Seven. Agree? Disagree? Let me know. Fridaynightwrite@yahoo.com It’s been a fun year, people. I’ve made real a true goal of mine of becoming a main-pager, and I’ve gained some real cool loyal readers. Sure, it’s corny, but “Fans of the Year” surely goes to the guys who e-mail me every time I write one of these things. So if you’ve ever sent me a piece of feedback, I really appreciate it. And if you haven’t, why don’t you try? It means a lot to us columnists to hear back from you. I know for me, one of the biggest reasons I do this is just to hear what ya’ll think. So hit me up with some feedback. What did you think the Match of the Year was? Who did you think the wrestler of the year was? Fridaynightwrite@yahoo.com Spark some conversation. But… for now… I’ll see ya’ll in 2008. Peaaaaaaaaace ***DIRECT LINK*** John Cena Partying with 8 Other Women!!
