The show kicks off with a video package of Batista and Mark Henry as they have a no disqualification match tonight.
Then, the show really kicks off with our first match: (But first, a highlight video of Finlay vs. Mysterio from last week is shown. Followed by this is a video of Jeff on ECW this week.)
Finlay vs. Jeff Hardy
The bell rings and they circle as the fans chant “Hardy”. They lock up and Jeff gets a headlock, but Finlay backs him into a corner after a forearm to the back. The ref separates them. They lock back up and Jeff gives Finlay an arm wringer before Finlay usues his vise to bring Hardy to the ground and keeps him there. Hardy punches out and throws Finlay over the top. Finlay stand outside and Jeff hits him with a dropkick before a vaulting body press. Jeff tosses Finlay in the ring and pins, but he only gets a one. Finlay whips Hardy into the corner (reverses a whip of Hardy’s. Hardy vaults himself up so Finlay goes under him and then runs at Finlay, but hits the ring post with his shoulder before falling to the floor. Finlay follows him out and tosses him shoulder-first into the guard rail before sliding him in and kicking him in the head. Finlay pins but only gets a two before going to a bit of a sleeper. Hardy gets to his feet, elbows his way out, and runs off the ropes before getting hit with a hard clothesline. Finlay pins, but, again, only gets a two. He then goes back to a sleeper-type move before the vise and then some elbow drops. He clotheslines Jeff again before going back to the sleeper. Hardy gets to his feet and hits a jawbreaker after a small punch to get out of the move. While Jeff sits on the mat, Finlay dropkicks him before pinning him and getting another two count. Finlay then goes back to the sleeper. Finlay lets go before lifting Jeff up and using the ropes to toss him back by his neck. Finlay follows up with some knee drops and another pin for another two before going back to the sleeper. Jef gets back to his geet and elbows out before running away, but Finlay grabs his hair, taking Jeff down. Finlay drops an elbow before helping Hardy to his feet and then whipping him to the corner. Jeff hits Whisper in the Wind. Hardy hits a clothesline once they both get up. Then, he hits an elbow and Finlay is in the corner. Jeff kicks him a few times before whipping him across the ring and dropkicking him a couple of times. Jeff goes for a hard dropkick as Finlay grabs the shillelagh. The ref tries to take it from Finlay, but he can’t. Jeff punches Finlay, but the ref disqualifies Finlay. Jeff throws Finlay over the top and celebrates his win.
Winner: Jeff Hardy by disqualification.
Rating: 2/5 – Not great, but it made both men look somewhat strong heading into Survivor Series without showing one of them to be “superior” to the other. Overall a decent match though the ending wasn’t the best, it did what it needed to.
Highlights from the first Hell in a Cell (Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels) are shown.
A video is shown of Undertaker’s Hell in a Cell Challenge to Batista.
Undertaker comes out. He says Hell in a Cell it’s been called the Devil’s Playground and that he’s been there more than anyone else and nobody’s come out the same. He says it can be called The Deadman’s Playground. He says Batista’s going to lose the World Heavyweight Championship. He also adds that Batista will not survive Hell in a Cell, but he will rest in peace. (I don’t know if it was just me, though, but it went black and all Undertaker said was “Peace”, not “Rest in Peace”, but Cole did say Batista wouldn’t be resting tonight, so it’s obvious – added to the fact that it’s a catchphrase – that he said “Rest in Peace”.)
Torrie Wilson and Mickie James vs. Victoria and Beth Phoenix
Mickie and Victoria start things off. The bell rings and they lock up before Victoria rings Mickie’s arm and begins trash talking. Mickie cartwheels to reverse it into an arm wringer of her own. Victoria whips her and Miockie ends up rolling Victoria up for a two before kicking her in the gut and snap maring her. She runs off the ropes, but Beth grabs her and Mickie punches her. Victoria knees her iun the stomach and kicks her in the head before picking her up and tahhing Beth in. They double team Mickie for a moment and then Beth pins for a two. She picks Mickie up and knees her a couple of times before doing a bit of a spear in the corner. Mickie moves and Beth misses a second one. Mickie tags out and Torie hits a few forearms before trying to whip her across the ring. Beth blocks it and puts Torrie back in the corner. Beth runs at Torrie, but Torrie jumps over her and rolls her up for a two. Beth ends up hitting a side slam as Victoria attacks Mickie. Then, Beth hits her finisher and pins for the win.
Winners: Victoria and Beth Phoenix.
Rating: 2.5/5 – This was a good match for a Diva tag match – because honestly, they’re not always all that great (the tag matches, not singles matches). However, I find all of Beth’s matches to be pretty good. This was good and showed Beth’s power while still showing that Victoria, Mickie, and even Torrie have something to bring to the table for the 10-Diva tag team match at Survivor Series. (A match I have a problem with as it keeps the Women’s Championship from being defended and, therefore, keeps a real Diva rivalry from being built for one of the biggest pay-per-views of the year.)
Highlights from Undertaker vs. Mankind in the Hell in a Cell are shown.
Next, we have a VIP Lounge segment with MVP. He invites Matt Hardy to the ring. Matt comes out. MVP offers him a seat and they both stand by the couch and chair. MVP says they’re going to be on opposite sides and that they’ve survived a lot. He says that as captain of the team he wanted to invite Matt out and tell him being tag champs with him is one of the highlights of his career. Matt asks about their match at ECW and footage is shown of Kennedy tossing Jeff off the apron. MVP rolls him into the ring and pins for the win. (I don’t see why this is a problem. MVP rolled him in and pinned him – it could be argued MVP didn’t see it – he didn’t attack him.) Matt says you always have a choice in life after MVP says he didn’t have a choice. Matt brings up the US Title. He talks about how MVP has been dodging him. Matt wants a title shot tonight. MVP says they are tag team champions, and, more importantly, they are friends. Matt says they’re not friends – they’ve never been friends and they never will be. MVP says Matt’s his homie and it hurts when he talks like that. Matt says he wants the US title. He tells MVP to put it on the line “right here, right now”. MVP says he can’t because they have a Tag Team Title match right now. The ring is cleared as the challengers come to the ring. (A video of Morrison and Miz attacking CM Punk on ECW is shown.)
MVP and Matt Hardy (c) vs. John Morrison and The Miz
MVP and Miz strt. The bell rings and they lock up. MVO is in the corner and Miz backs off. MVP takes him down and pins for a one before picking Miz up, holding his head, and kneeing him in it a few times before doing his running boot to the face in the corner. MVP is hurt and tags out. Matt fets in and gets a two before Mizz tags out. Matt hits his clothesline/bulldog combo after a couple of clotheslines before pinning for a two. Morrison runs Matt into his corner and Miz puts Matt’s lef on the rope as Morrison is being held back by the referee. Morrison jumps on the leg and then begins doing a number of moves to work on the left knee before tagging Miz in. Miz works on the leg too with some stomps before slamming it into the ring post and pinining for a two. Miz tags out and Morrison gives matt a forearm to the knee. Matt begins to fight Morrison off and clotheslines him. However, Morrison is able to get up and hit a dragon screw before Matt can get to his corner. He pins for a two before backing Matt into his corner and missing a running move. Morrison tags out and Morrison chop blocks Matt down before Miz pins him for the win.
Winners and NEW SmackDown! Tag Team Champions: The Miz and John Morrison.
Rating: 2.25/5 – Decent match, but somewhat short and uneventful with Morrison and Miz working on Matt’s knee for most of the match and ending it pretty quickly.
MVP says he wants his rematch and so Miz and Morrison begin walking to the ring as we go to commercial.
MVP and Matt Hardy vs. John Morrison and the Miz (c)
We come back form the commercial and Miz is pounding on MVP. MVP whips Miz and then leapfrogs him before crawling to Matt and tagging him in. Miz takes Matt’s leg and slams his knee into the ground. Miz tags Morrison in and he works on the knee more. Morrison tags back out and Matt begins to make a slight comeback before Miz hits a kick, a knee, and a neckbreaker. Miz gets a two before Matt puts his foot on the rope. Miz tags out and Morrison locks in a single-leg Boston Crab. Matt gets to the ropes and Morrison is forced to break the hold. Morrison drags Matt back to the middle of the ring and does another leg submission which Matt taps to (he was twisting his leg).
Winners: The Miz and John Morrison.
Rating: 1/5 – a continuation of the end of the last match and nothing more.
MVP helps Hardy up and raises his hand. The fans cheer and then MVP kicks Hardy’s leg before hitting it with the belt and dropping onto it. Then, MVP pulls Matt’s boot off and stomps on the leg a few times before taking Matt’s brace off. MVP twist Matt’s leg around and then drops onto it again before dragging him to the corner and slamming his leg into the ring post. He sets the steps up so that Matt’s knee is between them and the post. Then, MVP backs up and kicks the steps hard. He puts part of the steps in the ring and puts Matt in as well before hitting him in the face and dropping Matt knee first onto the steps. MVP yells in Matt’s face telling him he will never be better than him. Idiots in the crowd are crying as MVP walks up the ramp and leaves, telling Matt it will never happen as he holds the US Title over his head. (I liked this beat down.)
The mystery promo airs…looks to be Jericho still, but we’ll find out for sure next Monday.
Matt Hardy was helped to the back during the commercial.
A clip of Undertaker throwing Rikishi off of the Hell in a Cell into a truck at Armageddon a few years ago is shown.
JBL and Michael Cole go over the Survivor Series card.
Before the next match, a highlight of the Finlay vs. Mysterio match last week is shown.
Ken Kennedy vs. Rey Mysterio
The bell rings and they circle and lock up before Kennedy wrings and wrenches Mysterio’s arm. He eventually takes him down with it before Mysterio arm drags Kennedy. Kennedy kicks him in the gut before clubbing him and punching him a couple of times. Kennedy whips Rey and Rey ducks a clothesline before hitting a flying headscissors. Mysterio kicks Kennedy in the knee and punches him and then does both again. Mysterio goes to whip Kennedy, but he reverses it. Rey hits an elbow and then tosses Kennedy into the ropes for a 619. However, Kennedy is able to move before Rey can hit. Kennedy goes to the outside and we go to a commercial.
Back from the commercial, Kennedy has Mysterio in a side headlock before Rey pushes him off and Kennedy hits a shoulder block before stomping on Rey a couple of times and then attempting to take Rey’s mask off. Rey fights him off with a couple of punches and goes to whip him, but Kennedy reverses. However, Kennedy ducks for a back body drop and Rey kicks him. Rey goes for a move, but is flipped over and lands on his face. Kennedy pins, but only for a one before getting Rey in the vorner and hitting him with a shoulder. Kennedy kicks Rey and then whips him hard across the ring into the turnbuckle. Kennedy pins, but only gets a two before going to a leg scissors and wrenching Rey’s head back. Kennedy punches Rey a few times in this – though he lets go of the head. Kennedy turns it into a pin, but only gets a two. Kennedy occasionally grabs Rey’s head and wrenches it back. Rey tries to reach the ropes. He gets to the ropes and Kennedy is forced to let go. Rey falls out of the ring and Kennedy follows. He rams Rey into the guard rail and the apron before rolling him into the ring and pinning him for a two. Kennedy waits and finally grabs Rey, putting him into a torture rack. Rey punches Kennedy in the head and rolls around in a sunset flip tupe pin for a two. Rey jumps at Kennedy, but Kennedy catches him. Rey turns this into a crazy looking tornado-type DDT. Both men are down and the ref counts to nine before they get up. Rey runs at Kennedy, but Kennedy tosses him over the ropes. Kennedy doesn’t realize Rey’s on the ropes and Rey punches him in the head before hitting a hurracanrana followed by a flying cross body block with a pin for two. Mysterio gets whipped into the corner and he dropkicks Kennedy before hitting a seated senton. Both men are down for a few seconds before Rey kicks Kennedy hard in the head and pins, but only gets a two. Kennedy is down and Rey is slow to get up, but he picks Kennedy up and hits him before coming off the ropes. Kennedy reverses a move into a backbreaker. He pins, but only gets a two. Kennedy gets Rey in a fireman’s carry, but Rey gets out and avoids Kennedy hitting him. Rey then sets Kennedy up and hits a 619. Mysterio gets up, but Kennedy stays down. Rey goes and rolls Kennedy over, but is thrown face-first into the turnbuckle. Kennedy gets Rey up for a Green Bay Pluynge, but Rey gets away and hits a top rope hurracanrana and pins for the win.
Winner: Rey Mysterio by pin fall.
Rating: 2.75/5 – Not great, but it was pretty good and neither of the two looked bad. Both men looked strong in the end with Rey being shown to have the ability to win in a dynamic way – it really just refreshes people’s memories about what Rey can do from anywhere…even though this isn’t half of what Rey was once capable of as far as the crazy wins I’d say.
Highlights are shown from Randy Orton and Undertaker’s Hell in a Cell.
Next, we have the weigh in and photo opportunity with Hornswoggle and Khali.
Hornswoggle - 4’4”
Khali – Over 7’
Hornswoggle goes first – he looks scared the whole time. He weighs 138 lbs. Khali yells and lurches at Hornswoggle to scare him and Hornswoggle runs away. The Great Khali breaks the scale. He’s been known to weigh as much as 420. “The Great Khali says” that he watched the training session with the Coach on Monday and “was not amused”. He’s “beaten everyone” and it doesn’t matter if Hornswoggle is a McMahon or not, his name will be added to the list of people Khali has beaten. Then, we get the face off and whatnot with Hornswoggle reluctant to go near Khali. Hornswoggle comes to Khali’s waistline. Michael Cole says good luck at Survivor Series. Khali takes Hornswoggles hat and wads it up before throwing it on the ground. Hornswoggle is crying. (Overall a pointless segment meant to show how much bigger Khali is than Hornswoggle – as if we didn’t already know.)
Batista vs. Mark Henry – No Disqualification
Batista starts it off with punches, getting Henry to the corner. Then, he rams him with his shoulder several times before trying to whip him across the ring, but Henry reverses and puts Batista in the corner. Henry runs at Batista, but Batista kicks him in the face, knocking him down and then he slams his arm into the ring post. Batista attacks Henry on the outside, using the ring post, pulling Henry at it so that he hits it shoulder first. Henry gets in and Batista gets an armbar. Henry gets up and tosses Batista back, but Batista gives him a huge spinebuster – he holds him in the air for a moment before slamming him down. Batista then gets his title instead of pinning and hits Henry in the face with it. Batista pins for the win.
Winner: Batista by pin fall.
Rating: .5/5 – Squash to show how fired up and angry Batista is.
After the match, Batista launches Henry into the steps before tossing him into the corner behind the announce desk where he punches him several times and chokes him with a cord. Batista then takes Henry to the fornt of the announce table and rams him into the ring post. He then spears Henry. After the spear, Batista gets a chair and hits Henry on the back with it several times. Then, he gets in the ring to celebrate/taunt. A bell sounds and the lights switch the the purple/blue colored light and Undertaker appears on the big screen, but nothing happens. The show goes off the air.
Overall, I felt this show was just as good as last week, but just barely. There wasn’t anything that REALLY stood out, but we did get some decent matches and saw the tag titles make an odd change of hands…3/5
Well, that’s all for this week. Always feel free to send me questions, comments, or any other feedback to kylegu3@gmail.com.
Also, check out my column at LoPForums.com…It’s and interview – an odd one – with Claudio Castagnoli.
