The Friday Night Write - WrestleFanFest + Other Things That Make Wrestling Look Bad
Submitted by Al Boo Boo on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at 2:26 AM EST

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Columnists, marks, smarks, new guys, veterans, and Mods Welcome this NEW edition of the Friday Night Write. I am your host Al Boo Boo and thank you for dropping by, you can be anywhere in the world right now, but you’re here with me, I appreciate that.

I sit here writing this today with a new view into the world of Pro Wrestling. Of course, as many know, I was attended this week’s WrestleFanFest. For three days I spent my time at the legendary Cow Palace where names like “Superstar” Billy Graham, Rap Stevens, Pepper Gomez, Ernie Lad, and hell… Even Pat Patterson in all his Gayness once performed.

It was something I was really excited for. I mean, most big wrestling events are on the east coast, thousand of miles away from me here in California. So when I heard that there was going got be a wrestling convention not only here in Cali, but here in my hometown? I almost shit a brick. Then they started announcing names. Kurt Angle, Gail Kim, Greg Valentine, Sharkboy, DDP, Harley Race, April Hunter… a fantastic mix of stars old and new. Then the list just continued to grow and grow and grow, but, from what I’ve read, the tickets didn’t seem to sell any quicker.

Merely days before the event, stars began to write in their letters of regret. Angle wasn’t coming, the Outsiders weren’t coming, Jennety no-showed, Mil Mascaras didn’t come. From Friday, 2 hours before show-time, this thing started to “go downhill”.

I say that in quotes because, in my opinion, a couple of people no-showing wasn’t going to stop this weekend from happening. Hell, if not even getting a check wasn’t going to stop these wrestling stars to give some love back to the fans, than a couple of people showing their true colors wasn’t going to either. And that’s why last week, my love for this business was re-ignited. Not because I got to meet some of my favorite performers, or got to shake hands with some of the best, or got to shit-shat with guys who have forgot more about the business than I can ever dream of knowing… it was because it really showed that for these guys – it’s not all about the money. It’s not all about that check, and seeing their bankroll add a couple zeros.

It’s about entertaining us; it’s about giving us, their fans, and a good time. And last week at Wrestlefanfest – that’s exactly what they did. They all gave us a couple days out of their lives to just stop in, and say thanks to the fans that have supported them for all these years. To say thanks to the fans who, at the end of the day, are the ones who make this all possible.

This event was more than just a bunch of “meet-and-greets”. It was more than just a “Q&A dinner”, and hell – It was more than a “Legends Reunion Card”. It was to showcase the bond that we as fans have with those performers that we study, idolize, and cheer (and yeah, we’re cheering even when we’re booing).

Truth is, this event refurbished my love for this business. It reassured me that there is more than the shitty things that are on TV. It reminded me that outside of the WWE, there’s a plethora of guys who are “out of work” that laid the bricks of today’s wrestling society. Two weeks ago, I met a majority of these men, and it was my honor to shake their hands and shoot the shit with them.

If any of the talent at WFF is reading this, thanks for coming, and you were appreciated by all in attendance.

There have certainly been some interesting tid-bits in the news section this week. I always love reading news – some of it is just so outrageous. My favorite of the week…?

This little gem. If you didn’t read it – this is what was said.

Rumored to be from Batista’s new book - “Now, don't get me wrong, my ex-wife is the love of my life and I would never knowingly hurt her. However, while I was busting my butt on the road like a dog, she would sit around the house and do nothing. I mean, yeah, she had cancer, but she couldn't vacuum? And since the chemo made her "not in the mood", I had no choice but to have threesomes on the road. I mean, she's talented and I hated to see her waste her life like that when she could be a dancer, or maybe a nurse. But she's not a bad person and I take full responsibility for my actions, even though it was her fault.”

Lololololololawlsz. Now look, don’t look at me as someone insensitive to those with cancer. I’ve had family die of the thing, I have sympathy for those that suffer from the disease as the next guy – but come on… this is fucking hilarious. I don’t, I don’t even what to say. There are no jokes I can make that can make this any funnier. Ha, let’s just move on – I’ll show you the picture, and we’ll go to the next topic. Ha.

Look bitch, you do my laundry while I bang these ring-rats.”

Moving along, TNA recently cancelled its tour of Israel. What a disappointment this is. I’m sure the people in Israel were really saddened by the news that they wouldn’t get to see Angle v Sting 4032938. Between car bombs and suicide bombings, these people have more to worry about than who Kevin Nash is going to side with. Or just how Gail Kim is going to beat Awesome Kong at whatever fucking PPV that company has.

Truth is TNA needs to make better business decisions. Going to Israel is downright retarded. If they want to really branch out, come to the west coast. And I’m not just saying that because I’m over here. I’m saying that because everyone in America has TV’s, and this is where they should focus their business. I was laughing the other day while speaking to an uncle of mine, He referred to TNA as “The one with the circle ring with the old guys.” From an outsiders perspective… this is what TNA looks like. They try to set themselves apart, but if anything, they’re just making themselves a carbon copy of WWE. It’s just fucking lame.

Speaking of lame, this week we lost one of the greatest to ever do it. The Fabulous Moolah passed away – hardly arguable, the best Woman’s Champion of All Time. You want to talk about experience? This lady stepped her first foot in the business in the ‘40’s, yo. She is recognized by being the longest reigning champion of all time. Not woman’s champion, just champion. It’s sad to see her go, but it is one that we expected for awhile now. The woman was a true legend. R.I.P.

On a lighter note, a lot of people are starting to notice the comedic styling of Santino Morella. I have to say, the dude is fucking hilarious. And, it really shows that he’s improved. When he debuted, they had him hardly speaking English. And now – the dude is delivering the most (and sometimes only) entertaining moments of Raw. The thing with Austin is awesome, I gotta add. WWE’s constant plugging of their merch is usually annoying as hell, but if they did more like this – shit maybe I’d even buy something.

When will Austin “open a can of the ass-whoop” on Santino? Maybe next week on Raw, being he’s supposed to be there and all. But I can really see them not doing it. Maybe Santino escaping, slipping out of the ring before SCSA can hit him with that toe-kick and deliver the stunner. Although I’d like to see how Santino would sell it.

The one thing I do disagree with, is people saying he’s “The Future” of WWE. Uh… no. Sadly enough, Santino isn’t long-term WWE style. The guy is too small, and the gimmick doesn’t lend itself to much change. He’s a cocky Italian, now what? He face turns and becomes a cookie-cutter Italian face? Right now is the best you’ll ever get from Morella. WWE will use him for now, then spit him out when he gets stale. And you’ll be seeing him in your local indy feds, or worse… TNA.

This week is short, ladies and gents. But I’m way past my deadline, and I had to rush this out there. It’s not my best effort, but hey… you know.

I’ll be back next week for sure with an interactive column. I’ve been getting interesting feedback from you readers, and I figured I should give something back by letting you guys have some impact on the column. So, once again, hit me up with feedback:
