THE WRESTLING MENU #248
Welcome one and all to the 248th edition of The Wrestling Menu, the column that is sure to satisfy your taste buds when it comes to discussing all things wrestling.
Plain & simply; I have had the nightmare week from hell at work. Add colleagues being on vacation to system crashes to work overload & I've been as grumpy as Triple H after a loss! But here I am somehow with a column for the masses! In fact, just on that... A quick word of thanks to all my readers. I haven't been paying much attention to the amount of page views my column has been getting for a while now, but I wanted to take a look at something & I have noticed that my previous 5 columns have averaged well above 8,000 hits with last weeks "Save Us From HHH & HH Y2J" edition on its way to the big 10,000 mark. So thanks to all who have stuck by me of late as my columns have been a little different than usual.
By the way, that "something" that I wanted to take a look at that I was referring to was the amount of page views my TNA Hard Justice Review received a couple of months back. And it does make for an interesting fact as it was under 6,000, so it will be a touch fascinating to see if labeling Bound For Glory as "BFG" on the column title will successfully hide the fact that I talk a little TNA today!
Anyway, it's on with the show & apologies if the first section looks a little like filler, but it was either that or nothing.....
APPETIZERS - Watching WWE Live
That's a terrible topic heading right there folks. It suggests getting off your a$$, driving down to your local arena & watching WWE live. Which reminds me, I will be doing that in exactly 1 month’s time on November-10, but that is another story. What I actually was trying to insinuate by the heading was watching a WWE television show without previously knowing the results. And of course, that is most easily done when watching Raw or a pay-per-view which are both screened live to air.
The reason I want to briefly write about this subject is because of a few things from the last fortnight or so. Firstly, I have had quite a few loyal readers & loyal WWE fans inform me that they are taking a break from watching wrestling, or at least watching wrestling religiously (ie: every single major show). In fact, this is probably going back to the days of the Benoit tragedy, but let's not go there again shall we. Trust me when I say I know how you guys feel as for various reasons I cannot say that I am highly motivated about the product at the moment, whether it be because of work, personal life or the product itself.
But in a way, Chris Jericho (& to an extent John Cena) already saved me for a week or 2 at least. You see the rumors of Y2J's return & all the "Save Us 222" hype added to the fact that we had a vacant WWE Championship & a ppv upcoming made me shut down a little to wrestling in general. And I don't just mean to what I saw or heard, but also to what I thought about. I didn't want to even think about what could happen at 'No Mercy'. I just wanted the night to come & then whatever was going to happen to happen. And hey presto, I'd say it worked.
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that I am much more highly motivated about WWE's product as I was 2 weeks ago, but it sort of made for an enjoyable night in amongst all my stresses as I sat down to watch the pay-per-view. Hell, I even watched the "free-for-all" for about 5 minutes to attempt to get me excited. Well, that isn't a great example, but I was able to hulk up & get through that negative & pretty much enjoy the show that WWE delivered.
It sort of got me thinking back to another column I wrote a few weeks back when I compared the Raw & SmackDown brands. Ignoring the nights the shows air & the superstars on each roster, Raw really does have a huge advantage over SmackDown by airing live. Sure, I manage to keep away from the SmackDown results on occasions as I tape the show, but in most cases I take a peek at the results before watching the show.
What does knowing the results of a show lead to? Well, what happened with me regarding last Friday's episode when I watched 30 minutes on Friday night, 30 minutes on Saturday morning, 30 minutes on Saturday evening & the final 30 minutes just before the free-for-all for the ppv. The only thing I got out of that was the amazingly weird idea that Festus was possibly going to enter a WWE Championship battle royal & win the title. Alright, so I had been drinking a little, but hey, I've had a bad week alright!
MAIN – ‘No Mercy’ Review
For those that cannot recall my previous PPV review columns, this is the key that explains what the final PPV Rating means:
<50: Ask for a refund for not only your money, but also your time. [F] (Armageddon '04)
50-54: Mediocre & disappointing. [D] (EG: No Way Out '07)
55-59: Average. [C] (EG: Vengeance ‘07)
60-64: Worth A Watch. [C+] (EG: Unforgiven ‘07)
65-69: Good event that was worth the money. [B] (EG: WrestleMania 23)
70-74: Very good. [B+] (EG: Great American Bash '07)
75-79: Make sure you add this ppv to your video or dvd collection. [A] (EG: Backlash '07)
80+: Make sure that the video or DVD is locked in a safe & cannot be erased. Memorable. [A+]
TITLE PRESENTATION SEGMENT: Vince McMahon comes out to recap Cena's injury & resultant forfeiture of the WWE Championship. He surprises us by then naming Randy Orton as the champion then & there! Orton then speaks for a little while before being interrupted by Triple H who challenges Orton to a title bout. Orton & Vince first say "no" but then Vince changes his mind after H talks some crap about his grapefruits! It made absolutely no sense, but nothing Vince & HHH is involved in tends to. There was a good atmosphere about the segment with the crowd heavily involved for the better. But it really wasn't much different from your average opening Raw promo except for the big reveal of handing the belt over. And of course it went on too long at 17 minutes in length, but I passed some time by reading some humorous signs. Segment Rating: 6
TRIPLE H defeated RANDY ORTON to Win the WWE Championship: The opening promo resulted instantaneously in this title bout which Randy tried to escape from a few times in the opening minutes. Both men got their usual shots in during the early going, while the crowd was still hot from everything they had just digested. A big superplex gets a 2 count for H at the 8 minute mark & a spinebuster gets the same result moments later. Orton then gets his own nearfall with a rope-assisted DDT as both men have their finishers countered. After a HHH figure 4 attempt, Orton misses a running shoulder charge & Triple H rolls him up for the title victory at the 12 minute mark. The match was actually better than it sounds & was difficult to rate due to the spontaneous circumstances. However, it cleverly used that fact in its favor as the loud crowd immensely helped what was a rather ho-hum opening few minutes. The final 4 minutes was very good with the result always being in question, while a clean result was welcomed since a DQ or countout was teased at various stages. I may be over-rating it a touch, but..... Match Rating: 7.5
MR.KENNEDY, LANCE CADE & TREVOR MURDOCH defeated JEFF HARDY, PAUL LONDON & BRIAN KENDRICK: The 2 tag-teams handle the early going in this so-called "bonus match". The heels eventually get on top & isolate Kendrick with a wicked running boot by Kennedy the highlight. A top-rope tornado DDT variation eventually enables Kendrick to get the hot tag to Jeff as its fair to say the pace picks up & the action breaks down. It is almost literally too hectic to keep track of for about the final 2-3 minutes, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't darn entertaining. The finish comes a little out of nowhere at the 8 minute mark when Kennedy hits the Green Bay Plunge on London for the pinfall. Despite the fact that there was absolutely no build-up for this bout, it was very good & very exciting. All 6 of these guys simply get it done in the ring with especially London & Kendrick proving they are an asset to WWE. Match Rating: 7.5
CM PUNK defeated BIG DADDY V by Disqualification to Retain the ECW Title: Punk gets a good hometown pop upon entrance, but Big Daddy V rubs his lard all over the face champ to a combination of disgust & humor to all watching. Punk then avoids a corner splash to mount some offense, but this results in Matt Striker attacking the champ in the ring for the DQ ending at just the 2 minute mark! BDV attacks Punk in the aftermath, but that didn't make up for what was basically a non-mach. I can't see why this at least couldn’t have gone another 3-4 minutes & it's getting very annoying that WWE are using ECW ppv matches to set up their televised main-events! Terribly disappointing, this robbed the Chicago crowd of properly seeing their hometown hero in action, while the length of the bout showed further disdain for the ECW brand in general. Match Rating: 3
MATT HARDY defeated MVP in a Pizza-Eating Contest: Hosted by Tazz & adjudicated with the help of Melina & Maria, these 2 continued their contests here. MVP & Matt first duel it out on the microphone with Montel impressing once more. The 2 minute eating contest then takes place & is as boring as hell with Matt easily winning & then throwing up on MVP to end this 12 minute segment. Started ok, but then turned terrible as the 2 got off the mic. It may have worked on SmackDown, but didn't on ppv, especially after we had seen another segment not long earlier. What would have at least made the eating part of the contest a little more interesting is if Santino Marella came out to lambaste Chicago pizzas when compared to the Italian variety. That was a no-brainer of a call for mine. Segment Rating: 3.5
TRIPLE H defeated UMAGA to Retain the WWE Championship: Triple H gets another long entrance & I wonder if Motorhead get paid royalties every time their song is played on WWE programming. H gets in an early DDT & steel steps shot, but Umaga no sells both & then hits a super-kick himself. The false finishes then come fast & early as Umaga ends a nice sequence with a Samoan Drop. Following a quiet patch that seemed out of place after what had just occurred, the Samoan Bulldozer hits a spinning side slam, but then misses his running butt splash resulting in a pedigree for his troubles at the 7 minute mark. Not bad, but it just had that feel of filler about it. I don't know whether it was the length of the bout, it’s placement on the card or what, but there didn't seem to be much importance placed on the match (for reasons to become obvious later). I think these 2 could actually put on a very good longer match similar to Cena vs Umaga from earlier in the year, but this was pretty much hit & run all the way through. Match Rating: 6.5
REY MYSTERIO VS FINLAY: Rey is fantastic to begin with as he adds some excellent impact to his usual high-flying & fast pace. But in going for an inside to the outside sunset-flip powerbomb, Rey is countered by Finlay who ingeniously uses the ring apron to good effect as he arrests control. The Irishman then works on his opponent’s shoulder by sliding him into the ring-post & then using various impact moves & submission holds. The great thing here is that in amongst Finlay’s offense, Rey is constantly throwing in spurts of offense to keep the crowd involved & entertained. But the momentum is halted at approximately the 9 minute mark when Rey hits a springboard leg-drop & Finlay hits his head hard on the outside. A stretcher is called for as the match is abandoned, but Finlay eventually & predictably hops off & violently attacks Mysterio to genuine heel heat. I’m actually unsure when the match was officially stopped & what the result was, but there was about 12 minutes of action all up. And it was darn good action too with both men impressing. I loved the back & forth nature of this match & it proved that these 2 could do something special together if allowed to. While the ending was a little disappointing, it also played to the story well enough to forgive that booking decision. Match Rating: 7.5
BETH PHOENIX defeated CANDICE MICHELLE to Win the Women's Title: Candice, looking ravishing in hot pink, holds her own for the opening few minutes with a couple of nice counters getting her 2 counts. But when literally caught performing a top-rope move, she begins to get worn down by the stronger challenger. Candice keeps coming back though, always keeping the crowd involved, but eventually falls short as Phoenix wins the title at the 5 minute mark with a Fishermans Buster. That ending was too anti-climactic & the bout a couple of minutes too short in my opinion. There was also some messiness here & it was surprisingly usually when Beth was on offense. Overall, this was decent, but not up to their match from last month. Beth did some strange mic work after the match & its effectiveness may not be learnt fully until her next few appearances take place. Match Rating: 5.5
BATISTA defeated THE GREAT KHALI in a Punjabi Prison Match to Retain the World HeavyWeight Title: Khali gets caught in the ropes to allow Batista some early offense, but the Indian kicks his way out & asks for the 1st door to be opened. It is of no use though as Big Dave holds tough & hits a spear soon after to have the 2nd door opened. No luck though as Khali then uses a conveniently placed leather-strap to whip Batista & call for the 3rd door. But a spinebuster from the champ leaves both men lying. A Batista Bomb spot is teased before Khali locks on the vice grip, but neither man gets through the 4th & final door after a Batista low-blow. Khali is up first & awkwardly climbs out of the first caged structure, as Batista slowly follows suit. In what was then a rather impressive finish, Batista jumped from one structure to the other like a big monkey & then quickly scampered over the outer cage to overtake Khali & just beat him to the floor at the 15 minute mark. While there were lots of slow spots & down-time here, there were enough teases to keep us moderately involved. And of course that finish was a good way to cap things off making this more than passable, rather entertaining & better than expected. Match Rating: 7
RANDY ORTON defeated TRIPLE H in a Last Man Standing Match to Win the WWE Championship: Orton heads straight to Triple H’s injured ribs (sold in backstage segments earlier) as the action heads to ringside quickly. The action is rather methodical with Orton getting successive 6 counts early on with a back suplex on the security railing & a whip to the steel ring-steps. Back in the ring, each man hits a variety of fairly standard moves which apparently required 10 counts to fill in some time! Orton then chokes H with a cable to quieten the crowd & get a 9 count. Back to ringside we go as Randy hits a monitor shot & attempts an RKO through an announce table. But HHH counters, gets a 9 count of his own & then hits a huge steel steps shot to the head of his opponent for another 9 count. Back in the ring once more, Orton hits a DDT & RKO on to a chair as The Game is busted open & gets up at 9 with a defiant crotch chop.
Randy then goes for his concussion kick, but H blocks it, hulks up & heads back to the announce tables. Randy gets a count out there with a slingshot into the ringpost though, but H scores with a low-blow & a chair-shot for yet another 9 count. Both men then groggily get up on to an announce table where Orton hits an RKO for the title victory at the 20 minute mark. I’ve never been a huge fan of Last Man Standing matches & this bout sort of showed why early on with too many 5+ counts following rather normal offensive moves. The constant spot-count-spot-count pattern of the match did wear thin to a large extent, but I’d be lying if I said that I (& the live crowd) did not get drawn in for approximately the final third of the bout. The effort was clearly there from both men & eventually the moves had the necessary impact to make the counts make sense. Nowhere near perfect, I can see some fans rating this as high as a 9... But like I said, I‘m not the hugest fan of the gimmick. Even with that said though, this did make for a very good ppv main-event & was a fitting end to the rollercoaster WWE Championship story throughout the night. Match Rating: 8
PPV RATING (62/100) = 62
Looking at the key, I have basically given the 2007 version of ‘No Mercy’ a 'C+' grade & said that it was ‘Worth A Watch’. To be honest with you, I think my ratings system may have dealt with the show a little harshly due to the 2 failing segments. I will call the ECW Title bout a segment as it was hardly a match! Put it this way, No Mercy was clearly superior to last month’s Unforgiven which somehow rated 63. The story of the WWE Championship was an intangible that also needs to be considered as it played out well to the viewer on the night. But most importantly, this show had 4 matches rate 7.5 or above which is a good benchmark to aim for. The issue of whether the show will age well is an interesting one as it may not be as involving already knowing the outcome. But I feel it should hold up fairly well due to the 4 bouts touched upon, plus 2 other decent ones. So overall, considering what the card looked like on paper & the late injury to the previous WWE Champion, WWE did a very good job of putting on a good show here.

'Bound For Glory' Predictions
Ok, I'm going to warn everyone now; THIS WILL NOT BE AS SERIOUS AS MY USUAL PPV PREDICTIONS. Although I am unsure I was my usual self when predicting the 'No Mercy' results last week anyway. It's not necessarily intentionally demeaning TNA & I apologize to that promotion's fans if it looks that way. More to the truth is that I am just in a mood & I feel like going down this path. But I will attempt to throw some seriousness in as well. In fact, I don't even know if I will be watching the event. I'm 50-50 on that one. I wish it wasn't stuck between 2 close WWE events as that doesn't make the decision easier. Who knows... how much fun I have with these predictions may determine if I end up purchasing the ppv!
HOMICIDE & HERNANDEZ vs SENSHI & ELIX SKIPPER in an Ultimate X Match: I had this total mental blank as to what the guys names were in LAX. That plus the fact that I thought it was Lethal vs Daniels in the Ultimate X match probably tells you how much of the specifics of TNA I have been taking in of late! Oh well, I haven't seen one of these before & while most fans seem to not care much about them, I do feel the gimmick is a selling point to some extent. Plus, I know Skipper can do some crazy (Batista-like) things in order to get noticed by the TNA decision makers! I just wish AJ Styles was in this match! The other thing I hope is that all 4 talented men get to show their skills & not have the bout be some glorified sideshow (like The Great Khali). I really haven't got the foggiest who should or will win here & I will be more concerned with who are the faces & heels. I recollect that immigration officers (aka TNA decision makers) have been harsh on the illegal aliens lately, so..... Winners: Senshi & Skipper
TNA KNOCKOUTS GAUNTLET MATCH to Crown the 1st TNA Women's World Champion: Do I think that TNA should have a Women's Division? Probably, but I feel they maybe should have waited a month or 2 to better establish their true stars on their new 2 hour weekly shows. I'm not even totally certain who is involved here apart from Ariel, Jacqueline & Gail Kim. Oh & I just noticed it's a gauntlet match & I'm not a huge fan of them to be honest. The one thing the format does do though is allow anyone who can wrestle, to do so. That lady is clearly Gail Kim & she should be crowned the first ever TNA Women's Champ. Of course, for all I know the all-powerful Karen Angle will somehow emerge victorious. Damn it, I couldn't think of anything even remotely funny to write.... Oh, I know... "We Want Puppies"! Hang on a tick, that's not funny at all... Are you listening WWE fans... N-O-T F-U-N-N-Y! Winner: Gail Kim
RON KILLINGS & PACMAN JONES vs AJ STYLES & TOMKO for the TNA World Tag-Team Championships: Of all the f**Ken match-ups, this is the one they give AJ Styles!?!?!? Then again, Pacman isn't allowed to wrestle & Tomko isn't exactly Bret Hart, so it may be more of a singles bout between Killings & Styles here and I am a fan of both men so this may not be too bad after all. It will most likely be kept short though & there may even be interference by whichever tag-team is fighting to be ranked #9 in TNA, so this could also be a train-wreck. The ppv is in Atlanta, so my prediction is that Michael Vick makes a run-in, gets a nice block from Tomko, hands the ball off to Killings who flea-flickers back to Vick who goes deep to Styles, but it's intercepted by Pacman who runs it back for a touchdown despite some angry dogs chasing him around the arena! Winners: The Tennessee Titans
FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT MATCH to Crown a #1 Contender for the TNA World HeavyWeight Championship: I have seriously no idea how this match will work, who is in it or what the hell is going to happen! My main question is whether or not wrestlers competing in other matches are allowed to take part in this as the most likely candidates are Styles, Cage, Joe & of course Pacman! My guess is "no" & that this will be a best of the rest kind of deal & that can't be a good thing. Looking over the roster, we have the likes of 'The Bore Machine' Rhyno, Acid 'Goldust' Rain, James 'Don't Call Me Lance' Storm, Raven 'On', 'Big Gut' James, 'A$$' James, Moses Mesias & a bunch of cruiserweights. But I think it will come down to 4 men; KaneKind, Big Daddy Cool, Rikishi & 'Wildcat' Chris Harris. In fact, saying "Wildcat" just gave me a better idea: Save us Lionheart... Save us Y2J... Save us Jericho! What a swerve that would be by the ayatollah if he showed up here! But I shouldn't get all your hopes up. I just wish AJ Styles was in this match. The winner will be..... Winner: Abyss
JAY LETHAL vs CHRISTOPHER DANIELS for the TNA X-Division Championship: Ooooooooooh yeahhhhhhhh Macho Madness is runnin' wild all over again in 2007 in TNA. That doesn't read very funny, but if you say it with Randy Savage's voice, it does. In fact, if you say anything with Savage's voice, it sounds funny! I think every match needs a run-in on this card & how grand would it be if Savage himself did the deed here & belted the living daylights out of Lethal. Of course, that would be after the 25 minute mark of what could be a phenomenal match. Did someone say "phenomenal"...??? I just wish AJ Styles was in this match! It's almost irrelevant who wins here if this bout goes 20 minutes plus, but since I have XXX emerging victorious in the opener, it's only fair that Lethal gets the pinfall here... Ooooooooooh yeahhhhhhhhh! Winner: Jay Lethal
BACKSTAGE SEGMENT: I do NOT wish that AJ Styles is involved here. I'll give the gig to Big Grand-Daddy Fuzzy Grey-Haired Cool & he'll make fun of someone... Maybe Karen Angle, as she needs the appearance money obviously!
THE STEINER BROTHERS vs TEAM 3D in a Tables Match: In all seriousness, the match between these 2 teams at Hard Justice was actually quite good & it surprised the heck out of me. The fact that these guys can even work their way around the octagon or pentagon or whatever the hell it is, is an achievement in itself. I mean Scott is one serious injury away (say an exploding bicep) from not being able to walk. His brother Rick retired from wrestling a few years ago to teach school-kids how to bark. While Team 3D talk so much lately that I'm surprised a member of the TNA asylum (or WWE management) hasn't thrown a table at them. If they can match their performance from 2 months ago, this will be worth it. As for the result, you have to go with the masters of the Tables Match, The D-D-D-Duds. Winners: Team 3D
CHRISTIAN CAGE vs SAMOA JOE with Special Enforcer Matt Morgan: Apparently "there must be a winner" here. Well, that's handy! I believe the Green Bay Packers & Chicago Bears needed that selling point to make tens of thousands of people go out to Lambeau Field last Sunday as well! In fact, that reminds me to check how my Bills went against the Cowboys on Monday night. Hmmm, well they had about as much chance as winning as London & Kendrick attacking Triple H as he was heading to the back on Raw this past Monday! On-side kick, what the f**k!?!?!? I call for an inquest! Where was I? Oh yeah, Matt Morgan. I have no idea if he is aligned to anyone here, but I'm guessing he isn't & will turn heel here (as God knows Christian needs more lackeys... I wish AJ Styles was in this match) & cost Joe the bout. This will of course lead to a feud between Joe & Morgan with the paramount objective being to hold back the money feud of Angle vs Joe. "What? It's already happened... twice! Are You sure?" I should control my blinking a little more! Winner: Christian Cage
KURT ANGLE vs STING for the TNA World HeavyWeight Championship: So we come to the main-event of the biggest TNA ppv of 2007: Angle (Kurt, not Karen) vs The Stinger! Mr.Sting is well past his best, but still can rise to the occasion (wrestling-wise, not in Val Venis style) when required. And of course Kurt is Kurt, so this is sure to be at least a solid bout. While I do wish that AJ Styles was in this match, I don't see him making a run-in. In fact, who is that long blond-haired fella doing the deed? Is it Edge? No. Is it HBK? No. It's... It's... Save us Y2J... Save us... No, it's not him either. It's Triple H as he apparently has not had enough ppv matches in the month of October & wants to crack the double figures mark. Not since Scott Hall (entering a bar, not WCW Nitro) has anyone made a mark like this! But even Triple H is powerless against the most powerful person in professional wrestling today. With one wave of the arm, this person can knock a man down to the mat in a second. That's right, it's Angle... Karen Angle. She'll clean them all up; Sting Triple H, Jericho... And husband Kurt will play Bill Clinton to Karen's Hilary & emerge as still the TNA World HeavyWeight Champion. Winner: Kurt Angle
Ok, so there we have Bound For Glory in one hell of a humorous nutshell (if I do say so myself). To be honest, I have no freakin' clue who will win most matches & that can be clearly seen by the fact that I have chosen 3 heels to win the final 3 matches of the biggest TNA card of the year. There is usually fat (as in Big Daddy V fat) chance that will occur. Looking back over the card semi-seriously, it's a pretty solid event on paper & any of 4 matches could be right up there in the 8+ range match rating-wise, so I probably should take the time to check this ppv out. Let's just hope that TNA get the job done come Sunday night & let their wrestlers do the talking (figuratively, not literally) in the ring. Fingers crossed... Unless you're Big Daddy V & then you will just have to make do with making that V sign he does as his fingers are too fat to cross!
Holy crap, I did it... I seriously didn't think I was going to be able to get through this column, but it just goes to show what can happen if you put your head down & start typing! Oh well, I hope edition #248 of 'The Wrestling Menu' didn't come off too badly. Please don't hesitate to let me know what you thought of my 'No Mercy' review, 'Bound For Glory' predictions or whatever the hell I was waffling about in the 'Appetizers' section of today's column. BUT PLEASE REMEMBER that I am absolutely flat chat at work & will not be able to reply to your correspondence as quickly as I usually can. My e-mail address is DaveyBoy123@bigpond.com, but if you are an LOP Forums member, it would be much appreciated if you could leave feedback on my thread at http://www.lopforums.com/showthread.php?t=217&page=8.
