A report from the California State Athletic Commission and referenced by The Fight Network says that UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk and his UFC 73 opponent Hermes Franca both tested positive for steroids.
Sherk tested for Nandrolone Metabolite, which resulted in a $2,500 fine and one-year suspension. He has thirty days to appeal the decision, but if the appeal is not successful, he will miss a year of action and probably be stripped of the UFC belt.
“I'm fairly convinced that there's absolutely been a total mistake here,” said Greg Nelson, Sherk’s trainer. “I have absolutely no recollection of anything of that nature. I know his training and how dedicated he is to eating and doing everything as pure and clean as possible.”
Sherk revealed during a recent UFC All Access special that he takes twenty two over-the-counter supplements daily, and the presumption was obviously that all were legal and permitted by the CSAC. He has not personally commented on the test results.
Franca tested for Drostanolone; he faces an identical fine and a suspension through 7/5/08. He admitted the steroid use in an apology letter sent to MMAWeekly.com.
