Ridin’ With The Bossman – RWTB Investigation, Who Killed Vince?

Greetings! Welcome to another edition of Ridin’ With The Bossman. The column that suggested killing Vince off two years ago.

    No seriously, here’s the link.

    RWTB – Kill Vince, September 25, 2005

And I got a ton of hate mail for that column. I also got some praise, but mainly, hate mail. My, how times have changed.

So, enough self promotion, there will be more than enough of that later.

You want to know who I think killed Vince don't you? Well, I have no idea who it’s going to be. Steph, Shane, and H would be the best choices, and then we can get the power struggle angle out in the open, and then Vince will be back to take control.

Honestly, I don't think WWE even knows who they are going to pin the blame on. But that’s neither here nor there. Right now, the angle is simply hilarious. Just great fun. No one believes that Vince is really dead, but it seems like all the fans are in on the joke. Good for you WWE. Sure, there may be some folks mumbling that even in death, Vince steals the show. Sherri Martel passes away, and how this angle is disrespectful. Well, that’s debatable. Vince “died” before Sherri did, and to scrap an angle of this magnitude would be worse than going through with it, in my opinion.

And then there was the draft this week, wrapping up with the supplemental draft Sunday.

All in all, a huge week on news. And there’s still more to come. PPV this weekend. Vince, Vince, and more Vince. Power struggles. Draft shake-ups and who got the better deal. The Jackass guys are now officially a part of Summerslam. And a Diva’s Search is coming.

Wow. Hectic summer ahead for WWE, and I’m sure there’s at least two foreign tours in there I’m forgetting.

So much to talk about. But, I’m not going to talk about any of that. Sorry, I’m sure some one will cover it. Besides, I got to save material for the TV show.

So I’d like to talk about a subject that is near and dear to my heart, and one that covers just about, if not all of them.

    WWE – The Divas

The WWE women’s division is a division that most wrestling fans don't seem to take too seriously. A constant complaint over the years has been women’s matches taking the place of another match. The women themselves are often dismissed and a source of constant complaint.

Bottom line, the women’s division and the Divas don't seem to get any respect. Period.

And I just don't get the complaining. So, let’s get the easy part out of the way first.

Straight men like looking at women. It’s not just the boner factor, but in a sport filled with big, sweaty men, rolling around with each other, some boobs every now and then are a welcome sight. I’d also like to look at attractive women, as opposed to old, ugly broads.

It’s the same in every facet of broadcasting. Hot chicks are easier to sell than ugly ones. Hot Chicks as part of a show are an easy way to gain viewers. You can show a hot chick in a commercial, and there’s a damn good chance that a group of guys will tune in to check her out. In droves? Sometimes. Baywatch was a horrible show if you just watched it for the story and acting. But then again, that level of success has not come around again. So, Sometimes not. But it’s a pretty risk free chance to take. You just never know when lightening will strike twice.

Sex does indeed sell. That is undeniable.

“Sex and The City” was a mildly amusing show. But it was a sensation a few years ago. Why? Some hot chicks talking about sex. That’s why. Pertinent Social commentary? I have no idea, but I’m going to guess no.

But the key thing to think about, is that wrestling has not ignored this factor. Indeed, wrestling is very aware of the power of the hot chick and has used it to great advantage for decades.

Keeping things fairly recent, some names from the early eighties, some of which are still talked about to this day, are names like Missy Hyatt. Miss Elizabeth. Alexandra York aka Marlena, aka Terri Runnels. There were more, and all of them made a decent buck for the Companies they worked for. The modern era is jam packed with names that have made an impression on young males, and females as well.

But the women have moved beyond just being eye-candy.

Now, there are no more female managers or valets. At least in WWE.

Now, more than just looking good is demanded of the women. For starters, the women are expected to actually wrestle a match.

The physical talent of the women seems to have grown as well. Just a few short years ago, the most physically demanding match was splashing around in what looked like vomit. Wrestling seems to have moved beyond those gimmick matches, and moved more into the realm of physical contest. There are still the bra and panties matches, thank goodness, but actual moves have been added to those matches.

Now, is there anything wrong with a gravy bowl match, or, as just recently seen on ECW One Night Stand, a pudding match? Not at all. Well, other than the gravy just looks nasty. But pudding, no problem. The match at ONS was a hoot to see. It was fun. And when you stop to think about it, with all the crazy stuff going on during that show, digging up a pudding match was indeed, extreme.

Wrestling skills are not the only aspect of a being a Diva. Nor are looks. This is a new age, an age of mass media. And as WWE has expanded to cover these new grounds, one of the key tools are indeed the Divas. Back in the day, it was the male wrestlers getting most of the guest television shots. Now, it’s the women who are in demand as much as the men, and not just for their looks. Looks play an important factor, but personality also counts far more. I judge this based on the recent career paths of wrestlers who have lost the leverage that being part of the WWE brings them. Trish Stratus is perusing multiple acting engagements. Stacy Keibler landed a role on Dancing With The Stars, and many magazine spreads, a recurring role on network shows, and has just completed a movie role.

And for the current Divas, Ashley is going to be a part of Survivor.

That’s pretty huge. Ashley is a natural when it comes to hosting. She has a great presence on camera. And with the stage Survivor gives her, she will be a great spokesperson for WWE. That is, if she can last a week. That’s not an easy task to accomplish, but with her WWE physical training, and political training, well, I don't think anyone else stands a chance. The physical deprivation of things like food will take a toll. But, if she gets enough time, I think the Survivor Audience will come to like her. Ashley, as you may be aware, is a Divas Search contestant. Not only a contestant, but also the winner.

The past Divas Search contestants have given WWE a good crop of talent. They look good, they seem to be picking up the skills to be wrestlers, and they can speak, which is the key in today’s world. Because professional wrestling is no longer just abut wrestling.

The Divas Search did its job in attracting talent women to the WWE.

Yet, the looks of the women in the WWE should not be dismissed. It’s those looks that make the WWE the most money off the Divas. Diva names are some of the most searched celebrities on the Internet. The number of Playboy spreads is truly remarkable a good source of promotion for WWE. And WWE gets paid a piece of the action to boot. The stigma of wrestling can be put aside, and the Playboy aspect can be worked to gain entry onto shows that would not normally have a wrestler on.

But the tenure of a Diva in the WWE is usually fairly short. Looks are fleeting, and the craving for fresh faces and looks is the same as with any Hollywood opportunity. The window of opportunity seems far shorter than it is for men. But that’s the way it seems to be in all aspects of life for any female.

Indeed, but there are still some that seem to survive. Lillian is the Diva with the longest stint in WWE. But surprisingly, there are some former WCW names that seem to have survived previous attempts at replacement, and the general dislike of all WCW related talent. But they have the talent to keep performing at a high level, and still have great appeal to fans. Well, at least this fan.

So, all I ask is this one simple question to wrap up this ramble.

If you were going to get mediocre Sports Entertainment, wouldn't you like to have at least a Hot Chick involved? I know I would.

    Well, that’s about it.

I have RWTB TV to help give this column some weight.

I also have a proposition for you fans.

The question of the moment seems to be who killed Vince.

But the question of the future and one that I’m sure is cruising through their minds, giving the writers a deep sense of foreboding is:

How do you bring Vince back?

Well, I’d like to throw my suggestion out there, but there’s a price to be paid. See, it’s now the Summer of Cheap Hype. So, why not cash in myself?

If you would like to know what my angle is to bring Vince back, and get a little experience with how the rest of this summer will go, in regards to your expectations for angles, then all you have to do is:

    GO HERE: RWTB FEEDBACK THREAD

Leave me feedback in my feedback thread on the forums and ask me to tell you. If enough people ask, then I will reveal my angle.

The angle could be pure gold. But, it could also be total crap.

Just like what WWE has planned.

    It’s all a mystery.

So, quick plugs and that’s a wrap.
