Shawn Michaels called in to our morning radio show yesterday.
The Morning Buzz, on WGIR in Manchester NH and WHEB in Portsmouth, NH.
Here's a recap of the interview.
They started off by talking about WrestleMania. HBK said John Cena was a
good guy and that they shared the same sense of humor in that Cena
doesn't take himself seriously. Michael's said that he's enjoyed working
with him. HBK said that WrestleMania is what every wrestler aspires to
be a part of because there's always a chance of something historic and
memorable happening...it's totally different than any of the shows that
the WWE puts on.
They then went back in time a bit, as HBK said his favorite WrestleMania
moment was at WrestleMania 12 against Bret Hart when he became World
Champion. He said every wrestlers dream is to win the World Title at
the Main Event of WrestleMania and he was blessed to be able to
accomplish that. He also said the ladder match at WrestleMania 10
against Razor Ramon (HBK called him Scott Hall though) was dear to him
because he felt that he was finally able to show that he could crack the
main event scene despite his size...it was one of his personal best
moments. They then moved on and talked about WrestleMania 14 and his
match against Stone Cold Steve Austin. HBK said he was so screwed up in
his head during that time for so many reasons, mostly because he thought
his career was over. HBK said that when you don't go out on your own
terms, as an athlete, it ticks you off. At that point, HBK said he
didn't achieve what he had hoped for with Austin and that was to give
him the match that he wanted to really put him over. HBK said that you
have to have a clear head to go out and tear the house down each night
and his head just wasn't right, back then.
The host praised his answer and HBK said he's thankful that the industry
has changed to the point where they can talk about these things in
public and be more honest thanks to advances with the internet and the
media. In the past you had to stay in character where as today you
could just be yourself during interviews.
When asked who brings out the best in Michaels in the ring, HBK answered
that, while remaining as humble as possible, he brings the best in
himself out. He said that despite being 41 years old, expectations even
now are to perform as he did when he was 30. They asked how he's able
to wrestle with confidence despite his back problems and various
injuries throughout the years. HBK said that his spiritual beliefs are
what keep him fearless in the ring, even though he's not the same
physically as he used to be. He believes God will direct him and that
he should use his gift as best he can. He said if he gets hurt then it's
God's way of telling him that it's his time to stop and go spend time
with the kids.
HBK said he's going to, "put on the best show possible and that Cena
will look like the greatest wrestler the world has ever seen" when all
is said and done at WrestleMania. (Those were his exact words. I don't
know if that's a potential spoiler or not, but it sure sounded like HBK
was saying he was going to make Cena look like a strong champion. It
could potentially mean that Cena is going to keep the belt at
WrestleMania and HBK is being asked to cement Cena's status as an elite
top guy in the business.)
The host thanked HBK for his time and then he left the show.
