The Raw Report (10/23/06)
The show opened (live in Chicago, where wrestling and Chad Matthews last met live at Wrestlemania 22) with a recap of the various entertainment channels that covered Kevin Federline’s appearance on WWE Raw last week. JR and King then hyped K-Fed’s appearance in Nitro’s corner against John Cena, plus a rematch b/t Orton and Triple H.
Kevin Federline came to the ring to open the live action. Britney Spear’s husband grabbed a mic and asked if everyone wanted to know why he was back on Raw. He said it was simple…he wants payback. K-Fed claimed that all the entertainment networks talked all week about how Cena had humiliated him last week. He said that he wasn’t a loser like the Chicago Cubs players, and vowed to get his revenge tonight…and he figures to have some help in the form of World Champion King Booker. Booker slowly came to the ring and said that he listened to K-Fed’s CD. He called it a treasure and Federline a pure artist. The King said Cena would pay for his actions. He continued the K-Fed praise by calling him a trend setter, who would set the trend by voting for Cena’s WWE title to be on the line at Cyber Sunday. At that point, ECW Champion Big Show came to the ring in street clothes and said everyone needs to hold on a second. He said he agrees that Cena’s belt should be up for grabs at Cyber Sunday and that he should be beaten within an inch of his life. However, he disagreed that Booker would win the Champion of Champions match. He said that he was the most dominant athlete in WWE history, and if he didn’t believe him to tune into ECW tomorrow night. A “Cena” chant broke out. Book cried “Balderdash!” Big Show asked what the hell that meant. They argued over who’d be victorious at the PPV until WWE Champion John Cena showed up and, from the top of the ramp, told us to look at what we’ve got here. He said we’ve got Big Show, Booker T, and Kevin Federline…the dumbest line-up in the history of Celebrity Jeopardy…a big (referring to Show), royal (Book), pain in the ass (K-Fed). Cena addressed K-Fed and questioned his choice of allies, claiming that Show was the Stay-Puft marshmallow man, Jabba the Hut, and the white Fat Albert (mocking his past movie roles by making bogus claims of roles he did not have). He then addressed K-Fed’s choice of Booker T as an ally, saying that it was all well and good w/ the King gimmick until he called K-Fed’s album a “treasure.” Cena said that Booker had officially lost his status as a black man. Ron Simmons then showed up and said, “Damn,” before walking away. Cena turned back to K-Fed and said that he’d have better luck playing with himself (rather than “Playing with Fire,” the title of K-Fed’s album) than getting revenge on the Champ. (CMV1 note- this was a segment that I can’t think of a better word than “fun” to describe. From Book’s goofy “Balderdash” line to Ron Simmons one-liner, it was just enjoyable. In terms of hyping the Cyber Sunday main-event, it was satisfactory)
Match 1: Melina vs. Mickie James
-(CMV1 note- this was a semi-final match in the women’s title tournament). Melina nailed Mickie with a clothesline before the bell rang, but James came back with a modified spear. A hair pull and a pull-and-drop off the ropes later and Mickie was in total control. Melina came right back, though, and connected on a snap suplex. She then back mounted Mickie and put her in a dragon sleeper. Mickie fought to her feet and used her knees to escape the submission. She scored with a Perfect Plex for a near fall, but then the two traded forearm shots in the middle of the ring. James gained control with a clothesline and a back elbow. An awkward exchange ensued, but Mickie got it back in control with a flapjack. She went for the Mickie DDT, but Melina countered and hit a modified swinging neckbreaker. James came back with a hurricanrana and hit her signature DDT for the win. Mickie advanced to the finals at 3:48. (CMV1 rating- *) (CMV1 note- solid effort from the ladies aside from that one spot)
JR and King showed footage of last week’s main-event, featuring Triple H defeating Orton via HBK interference and a chair shot.
Match 2: Chris Masters and Shelton Benjamin vs. Carlito and Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy
-(CMV1 note- Hardy will face Carlito, Shelton or Nitro at Cyber Sunday, as JR announced prior to the match). Hardy started off against Benjamin with a lock-up. Shelton backed him up into the heel’s corner, but Hardy fought out of it. Benjamin scored with a stiff roundhouse kick and then threw Jeff to the outside. Masters bodyslammed him on the floor, while Shelton distracted the ref, and soon after the Masterpiece tagged in and connected on a suplex. Shelton tagged back in and stomped away at the IC champ. Some basic offense followed before Shelton locked in a rear chinlock. Hardy battled out of the rest hold, but Shelton kept control and tagged Masters. Masters focused on Hardy’s lower back and then tagged SB. Benjamin taunted Carlito, but proceeded to miss a short-armed clothesline and allow Hardy to hit the Whisper in the Wind. Carlito got the tag and hit a springboard back elbow and a jumping Flatliner on Shelton. He then hit a springboard rolling Senton, followed quickly by a springboard moonsault on both Masters and Benjamin. The finish came when the faces had some confusion follow their attempt at a double-team, which led to Carlito getting rolled up by Shelton for the 1, 2, 3. Benjamin and Masters defeated Hardy and Carlito at 4:23. (CMV1 rating- *). (CMV1 note- way too short, but fine while it lasted I guess). After the match, Carlito and Hardy argued until Masters and Benjamin started a brawl with them that led to the faces standing tall in the ring.
The Chicago Bears were in the house tonight…
Backstage, Todd Grisham interviewed Edge and Randy Orton. Edge called Grisham “Re-Todd,” and talked about how typical it was for DX to do what they did last week. Orton said they won’t lay down for DX like others have, and that as the two biggest superstars in the industry, he and Edge (who he said were Rated R…K-O) will get the job done and defeat DX. Edge said that Eric Bischoff, The Coach, and Vince McMahon will be at ringside for the Orton-Trips match tonight.
A taped segment aired where the WWE superstars and some fans argued whether John Cena or John Triton (his character in “The Marine”) was tougher…
Backstage, Johnny Nitro and K-Fed were hanging out and talking trash about Cena. Nitro said K-Fed was a better rapper and actor than Cena, but tonight Johnny would show the world that he’s a better wrestler than Cena.
Match 3: Johnny Nitro (w/ Melina and Kevin Federline) vs. WWE Champion John Cena
-Nitro scored with a knee lift to open the action, but Cena came back with a hard back elbow and a fisherman’s suplex. K-Fed and Melina got involved and allowed Nitro to gain control. Johnny mounted Cena and punched him repeatedly before driving his boot into Cena’s throat. Nitro then scored with a falling neckbreaker and synched in a neck vice. The crowd chanted “Let’s Go Cena,” as the champ battled to his feet and powered out of the submission. Cena went for a cross body block, but Nitro ducked it and threw Cena out of the ring in front of K-Fed. Federline proceeded to slap the taste out of Cena, but it only prompted Cena to turn around and start toward the pop star’s hubby. Unfortunately for Cena, Nitro landed on him with a plancha over the top rope. Back in the ring, Cena tried to fight back, but got caught with a Nitro running bulldog. Cena tried to fight back again, but Nitro took him down with a sleeper hold-body scissor combination. The champ got to his feet w/ Nitro still on his back and dropped backwards, crushing the former IC champ b/t himself and mat. Cena went wild from there, connecting on a series of diving shoulder tackles and clothesline, followed by the Prototype spinning back drop. He then motioned that K-Fed “couldn’t see him” and connected on the Five Knuckle Shuffle and the FU. Cena defeated Nitro at 6:33. (CMV1 rating- * ¼) (CMV1 note- fine for what it was, but it’s clear that Nitro isn’t moving out of the mid-card anytime soon). After the match, Cena went after K-Fed as he backed up the ramp. Booker and Big Show came out and beat Cena back to the ring before the champ could get his hands on K-Fed. Book slammed Cena’s face into the ring steps and then drilled him with a hard running clothesline. Big Show gave him the chokeslam, as Federline taunted him from the ramp. Booker T then gave Big Show the Book End and Cena the Axe Kick.
Match 4: World Tag Champions The Spirit Squad vs. Cryme Tyme
-(CMV1 note- this was another non-title match). JTG started against Mikey, who took immediate control as a result of the Spirit Squad’s trickery and heel tactics. Nicky and Mikey proceeded to connect on a standing moonsault combo. JTG fought back, but couldn’t get much offense in, as Mikey connected on a vertical suplex. Mikey then hit a dropkick, but JTG leapfrogged his next offensive maneuver and tagged the powerful Shad. Shad cleaned house, hitting a sidewalk slam on Mikey and tossed Nicky out of the ring. The finish came when Cryme Tyme hit the G9 (Samoan Drop and twisting neck breaker combo) for the win. Cryme Tyme won at 2:58. (CMV1 rating- ½ *) After the match, Kenny dropped his teammate, grabbed a microphone, and vented his frustrations. He chastised his Squad members for losing and losing and losing to guys like Ric Flair. He challenged Flair to a match tonight…and he said he’d do it by himself. (CMV1 note- formulaic and unimaginative match, but Kenny breaking from the Squad could be the beginning of a long and successful singles career. Kenny is the most talented member of that crew and it was often theorized upon the Squad’s debut that at least one of them would eventually break free and be a potential breakout star. Kenny has the most potential to do just that…He’s young, talented, and the sky is the limit).
WWE 24/7’s moment in wrestling history was a look back at the WCW Chamber of Horrors match in 1991. In that match, Abdullah the Butcher was “electrocuted.”
While Eugene was shooting T-shirts into the crowd, Armando Alejandro Estrada came to the ring with Umaga. AAE said that fans could choose Umaga’s opponent at Cyber Sunday…Chris Benoit, Sandman, or Kane. Umaga proceeded to destroy Eugene…
Highlights aired of the WWE’s trip to Japan last week…(CMV1 note- I’d love to see a live show overseas one of these days…those crowds just seem amazing).
Backstage, Eugene was getting a pep-talk from Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Eugene attacked him…
Match 5: Kenny (w/ the Spirit Squad) vs. Ric Flair (w/ Roddy Piper, Sgt. Slaughter, Dusty Rhodes)
-Kenny backed Flair into the corner, but Flair reversed and hit a few knife edge chops. The Squad member hit a back drop and a second-rope missile dropkick to gain control, though. Kenny got fired up and tried for the Figure Four, but Flair countered and scored with basic offense. The Nature Boy dropped a knee, but thanks the Squad’s interference, got rolled up and pinned by Kenny. Kenny defeated Flair at 1:26. (CMV1 rating- ¼ *). The Legends came in and attacked the Squad. Kenny hightailed it. (CMV1 note- this was nothing more than a chance to get the Legends on TV. I don’t get it…I thought it was supposed to be a way for Kenny to break away from the Squad. The lack of storyline continuity in WWE often annoys me, but the lack of continuity on the SAME DAMN SHOW!?! C’mon…)
Brooke Hogan’s CD is out tomorrow…
Backstage, Todd Grisham interviewed DX. HBK wasted little time in promoting their merchandise. He asked if anyone ever noticed that the people that claimed to be the best in the industry typically backed it up the least. Trips said it really didn’t matter, that they’d whip Orton and Edge’s ass anyway.
JR and King ran down the Cyber Sunday card…
Bischoff, Coach, and McMahon were backstage. Vince wanted to make sure that Eric knew that the past was the past, and said that he could help Bischoff sell his book if he’d help him with his DX problem. McMahon got a call from his broker, and sent Eric and Coach to take care of things during the Trips-Orton match.
Match 6: Randy Orton (w/ Edge and Lita) vs. Triple H (w/ HBK)
-(CMV1 note- Eric Bischoff and Coach were at ringside. Once again, this match is going to be short…you remember 2004 when you got lengthy matches on Raw almost every week? Someone check ratings; weren’t they exactly the same back then? Please go back to that…). Orton took early control w/ a knee lift, but the two soon found themselves trading blows in the corner. Trips scored with a falling neckbreaker, a vertical suplex, and a knee drop to gain full momentum. Orton tried to get back into it, but got caught with a Triple H spinebuster for his troubles. To the outside they went, where Trips rammed Orton’s head into the steel steps. HHH taunted Edge before crawling back up to the apron. Now in the ring, Orton dropped Triple H’s neck across the top rope and later connected on a standing dropkick. Trips made a brief comeback, but Orton kept his momentum going with a DDT. The Legend Killer proceeded to focus on the Game’s knee. He then changed gears and dropped his knee on Triple H’s shoulder. Orton went to the chinlock soon after, as the crowd began to get behind Triple H. HHH got to his feet and eventually connected with a Harley Race high knee and a facebuster across his knee. Lita got involved, prompting Trips to pull her by the hair up to the apron. Orton took advantage and regained control with his patented backbreaker. Randy prepared for the RKO, but HBK hopped up on the apron and distracted ref. HHH countered the RKO and pushed Orton into the referee. Trips went for the Pedigree, but Edge came in the ring and gave him a Spear. HBK came in the ring and took care of Edge. Michaels then hit Coach with the superkick, but in doing so left himself vulnerable to a recovered Edge, who threw him into the ring post. Edge went back in the ring to give Trips another Spear, but the Game countered and threw the Rated-R Superstar out of the ring. Meanwhile, Eric Bischoff gave Orton a steel chair. Orton promptly blasted Triple H right between the eyes. Orton pinned HHH at 6:00. (CMV1 rating- * ¾) (CMV1 note- solid, yet short main-event that pulled the combo of Orton and Edge even w/ DX. They could honestly run this feud for months if they continue doing it as a game of “one-upsmanship)
All in all…This week’s Raw, from a storyline perspective, was pretty damn good, sans for the lack of continuity with Kenny. They had a fun opening segment to hype the mid-show main-event and the Cyber Sunday main-event. They further hyped the Cyber Sunday main-event later on…The hyped what I’d called the semi-main-event at Cyber Sunday b/t DX/Orton &Edge pretty well…plus they advanced the women’s title tournament and announced a few more matches for the PPV. However, the wrestling was all way too short and nothing reached the 2-star mark. There’s no reason there can’t be a nice balance of both wrestling and storylines in a 2 hour and 5-minute show. Because of the lack of good, quality wrestling, I’m docking the show down to a 5/10 and calling it a night…
