- Thanks to Jonas Terrado for sending in the following live report:
I just came back from the second day of the Smackdown live event at the Araneta Coliseum. Crowd was about 9,000-10,000 with numerous seats and bleachers available, but the lower seats were generally packed, lots of kids in attendance.
Tony Chimel started off the show, announcing a six man tag team match between King Booker, Finlay and Mr. Kennedy against Batista, Undertaker and Bobby Lashley.
Chris Benoit (c) vs William Regal for the WWE United States Championship
Great opener between the two, some fans at the arena where probably bored by it but the match was similar to their past matches with those unusual holds and Regal using the Inverted Surfboard on Benoit. Match finish saw Benoit using the headbutt but Regal moved out of the way. However, Benoit was able to put Regal in the Sharpshooter to retain the title. Chris Benoit def. William Regal via submission at 11:29 to retain the United States Championship
Brian Kendrick vs KC James w/ Michelle McCool
Decent match, lots of fast-paced moves by Kendrick while James relied on some holds. James also made a Ric Flair-type strut. Match finish saw Michelle McCool pulling Kendrick from the top rope, leading to James scoring the pinfall. KC James def. Brian Kendrick via pinfall at 7:15
The Miz vs Jimmy Wang Yang
Some good spots by Jimmy Yang as The Miz insulted the crowd with his ridiculous antics. Yang was able to hit the Corkscrew Moonsault for the victory. Jimmy Wang Yang def. The Miz via pinfall at 5:59
Cruiserweight Champion Gregory Helms vs Matt Hardy (non-title match)
Nice match between the two quite similar from their televised matches. Some Hurricane and Rosey chants from the crowd. Some near counters towards the end with Helms using the Hurricane-like crossbody with Hardy hitting the Side Effect. Hardy won via the Twist of Fate for the win. Matt Hardy def. Gregory Helms via pinfall at 8:23
Intermission.....
Paul London vs Idol Stevens w/ Michelle McCool
Solid match between the two, I think Stevens and James would be better off as a tag team for now as Stevens was a typical big man wrestler during the matchup. London did some fast-paced and high flying moves during the match. McCool was even hit London with that teacher's stick. Some kids were also fighting for that stick after the stick was left on the floor. Finish saw London grabbing McCool on the outside, resulting in Stevens inadvertedly hitting McCool. KC James then entered the ring but Brian Kendrick came out and brawled with James. London would hit the dropsault for the win. Paul London def. Idol Stevens via pinfall at 8:59
Chavo Guerrero vs Vito
Eddie chants were directed at Chavo but didnt care about it. Match was more of a comedy for the first few minutes with Vito showing off his underwear. Chavo cheated by using the rope for the win. Vito seems to be frustrated after the loss. Chavo Guerrero def. Vito via pinfall at 9:04
Chimel thanked everybody for coming over to the show.
World Heavyweight Champion King Booker, Finlay and Mr. Kennedy vs Batista, The Undertaker and Bobby Lashley
King Booker came out and cut a heel promo, Chimel was forced by Queen Sharmell to lead the crowd into chanting "All Hail King Booker" to no avail. Crowd was booing Booker and Finlay. Mr. Kennedy also cut a heel promo by saying the native language of the word "Quiet", or in his words "Shut Up!", numerous times to the delight of the crowd. Lashley came out followed by a round of applause to Batista and Taker, respectively.
Early moments of the match saw King Booker doing a body building posing to the crowd but Batista was mocking him on his back. Match saw some typical tag team wrestling with the heels dominating Taker. Some comedy came in when the Lil Bastard came out but was eventually chokeslammed by a kneeling Taker just to keep leverage. Match saw Batista dominating the matchup. Lashley powerslammed Finlay, Taker chokeslammed Kennedy and Batista hit Booker with the Batista Bomb for the win. Batista, The Undertaker and Bobby Lashley def. World Heavyweight Champion King Booker, Finlay and Mr. Kennedy via pinfall at 19:27
Batista, with Filipino lineage, then took a Philippine flag and wave it to the audience. He high-fived several fans at the stands and did numerous posings with the flag around his shoulders in the end for the next 5-10 minutes or so.
In my estimate it was two great shows for the WWE for their international audience, wrestling fans rarely see the WWE come to the country and perform in front of a huge crowd.
Biggest Pops: 1. Batista 2. Undertaker 3. Benoit 4. Lashley 5. Kennedy
Biggest Heat: 1. King Booker 2. Finlay 3. Helms 4. Regal 5. Cant decide on this becaue the audience was cheering most of the time
