- Thanks to Jonas Terrado for sending in this live show report:
I just came back from the Smackdown House Show at the Araneta Coliseum in Manila, Philippines (or to be specific Quezon City, a suburb). Over 13,000 fans packed up the coliseum, but to be honest a lot of those general admission tickets were still available so it was not as full as the RAW House Show a few months ago. LOT OF KIDS in attendance by the way, what's new.
Tony Chimel began the show announcing that Vince McMahon and Teddy Long changed the card for a World Heavyweight title match between King Booker and Batista, who has a Filipino lineage. Then, the first match starts for the Tag Team belts.
Paul London and Brian Kendrick vs KC James and Idol Stevens w/ Michelle McCool for the WWE Tag Team Championship
Nice match, typical old school tag team wrestling with those blind tags that the referee never saw. I still wonder why Idol Stevens has that stupid looking pink tights and a black boots. The heels took control for most of the match before Kendrick made a tag to London. Some nice moves by the tag champs. End saw a double superkick by London and Kendrick, no wonder Paul was an HBK protege. Paul London and Brian Kendrick via pinfall at 12:28 to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship.
The Miz vs. Vito
Typical Vito match, for the sake of entertainment just to see that ridiculous underwear, and the kids are suckers for this one. Miz was booed but didnt get much the heat that was necessary for a heel to play out. The former TNA guy used a DDT like finisher on that irrating Smackdown announcer as Vito pinned Miz via pinfall at 7:13.
William Regal vs. Bobby Lashley
First minute of the match saw some offense by Lashley. Regal faked an injury after a delayed vertical suplex by Lashley for the next three minutes and nailed Lashley as he was carried off by some referees. The finish saw Lashley spearing Regal for the win. Bobby Lashley def. William Regal via pinfall at 8:53. Lashley was over as a face, Regal was booed by the crowd after his heelish tactics.
Gregory Helms (c) vs Jimmy Wang Yang for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship of the World
Jimmy Wang Yang came out first and I tell you he's got a stupid gimmick in my opinion, typical 1990's WWF gimmick. Short match with a few highspots by Yang, that included a moonsault from the top rope. But the rest was that a typical WWE Cruiserweight match before Helms used that Nightmare from Helms finisher for the win and a clean finish. Gregory Helms def. Jimmy Wang Yang via pinfall at 6:21 to retain the Cruiserweight Championship.
Mr. Kennedy vs The Undertaker
Mr. Kennedy came out and cut a promo about how Manny Pacquiao will get his behind kicked by Erik Morales next month, some cheap heat. Then, Taker came out to a huge roar from the audience. Match saw a lot of holds from both wrestlers, both in and out. End saw Taker chokeslamming Kennedy and then the Tombstone Piledriver for the win. Good match, not sure if this was better than their No Mercy matchup since I never saw it. Undertaker def. Mr. Kennedy via pinfall at 18:13.
Intermission....
I then notice road agent Steve Keirn alongside Tony Chimel and some photographer.
Fit Finlay vs Matt Hardy
Finlay came out first with a round of boos from the crowd although there were some Finlay fans in the house. To keep some heat from the crowd, he smashed a pop corn of a fan at ringside and antagonized a young female at the stands, a nice sight indeed. A solid match by the two with some appearance by the Lil Bastard low blowing Hardy. Finish saw Finlay hitting the resident Smackdown jobber with that shillelagh on the right knee for the pin. Finlay def. Matt Hardy via pinfall at 13:16.
Chris Benoit (c) vs Chavo Guerrero for the WWE United States Championship
Some Eddie chants by Chavo but he didn't care, Benoit was so over in this match. Great match, some chain wrestling in the first few minutes of the match before going to some fast-paced action. Finish saw Benoit using the Crippler Crossface on Chavo for the win. Chris Benoit def. Chavo Guerrero via submission at 15:29 to retain the United States Championship
Chimel then thanked everyone for coming to the show
King Booker (c) vs Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship
Queen Sharmell came out and introduced King Booker. She then forced Chimel to say "All Hail King Booker". After a huge ovation for Batista, the reigning champ cut a heelish promo at the Philippines, after seeing a kid with a "Batista is sexy" sign or whatever that is, calling us "Gooty Booty" or something (it was too loud at the arena). Booker was hated in the main event. The match was a solid one, typical punch and power moves by Batista. Booker din an impressive scissors kick at the outside with Batista at the apron. Batista later came back on the offensive with clotheslines before hitting referee Nick Patrick (minus the mustache from his WCW days). Booker then low blows Batista. Regal comes out with Jimmy Korderas but Batista kicked out. Booker then punched Korderas but was later hit by a spinebuster and the Batista Bomb by the half filipino superstar. Finlay came out for the DQ as Batista was a count away from the title. After a 3-on-1 assault, London and Kendrick came out but failed to stop Finlay and Regal (seems to be a future feud in store). And then Taker comes out to a huge roar as the faces cleaned house to end the show. Batista def. King Booker via DQ at 14:02. King Booker retains the World Heavyweight Championship
Biggest Pops: 1. Batista 2. Undertaker 3. Lashley 4. Benoit 5. Lil Bastard after he came out, kids love him
Biggest Heat: 1. King Booker 2. Regal 3. Finlay 4. Kennedy 5. Chavo
