    The Raw Report (10/02/06)

Match 1: Texas Tornado Match- DX vs. Lance Cade, Trevor Murdoch, Viscera, Haas, and the Highlanders
-(CMV1 note- before the match, highlights of the Unforgiven HIAC match were shown). DX did their usual schtick before the match.
Coach interrupted them and asked them if they thought they ran the show. He said that they were incorrect if that’s what they thought, because he runs the show (on behalf of the McMahons). Cade and Murdoch attempted to attack first, but their efforts were easily thwarted. So too were the efforts of the Highlanders. Haas and Viscera managed to take control for the heels, though, allowing Cade and Murdoch to get involved and make it a double team on each DX-member. The crowd got behind HHH and HBK, giving Trips the strength to move Charlie Haas into the way of a Viscera splash in the corner. They disposed of the rest of the heels and managed to knock down the 500-pound Viscera. The Highlanders tried to turn the tide, but ended up turning on Cade and Murdoch. Meanwhile, Triple H and HBK double team Murdoch. They hit a double DDT on Viscera, which they followed with a spinebuster and elbow drop combo on Haas. HBK then tuned up the band and hit Sweet Chin Music on Haas. The finish came when Triple H pinned Haas after a Pedigree, giving DX the win at 2:56. Coach came out after the match and threw a bit of a hissy fit. He said it wasn’t over just because they won. He said that hadn’t won the war, yet, and reiterated that he ran Monday night Raw. HHH questioned his authority and threatened to take over the show. (CMV1 rating- ¾ *) (CMV1 note- not a bad way to open the show, as at least it gives the promise of an interesting duo running Raw for the night. I must note that JR mentioned that DX taking over would be a “hostile takeover”)

Match 2: Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro (Melina) vs. Jeff Hardy
-(CMV1 note- title was on the line here). Nitro connected on a boot to the gut to start off the match, and he stayed on Hardy with a series of European uppercuts. Hardy came back with a running One and Only and a double leg drop to the groin area. He then hit a leap frog into a head scissor. Hardy tried to put the match away early with the Twist of Fate, but Nitro countered, pushed Hardy, and scampered out of the ring. Jeff wanted to follow him to the outside with a plancha, but Nitro moved. Hardy caught himself in mid-air and landed on the apron, allowing him to catch Nitro by surprise with a diving clothesline. We then got a dreaded mid-match commercial break, but that was to be expected. Back from the break, Nitro had Hardy locked in a submission hold. Hardy fought his way to his feet and the two traded blows in the middle of the ring. He tried for the Whisper in the Wind, but Nitro moved out of the way. Nitro took advantage of the new injury and focused on Hardy’s lower back. He connected on a running low drop kick that sent Hardy’s body into the ring post. Nitro proceeded to hoist Hardy up into FU position and bring him down over his head into a backbreaker. The move scored Nitro a near fall, but then he synched in a surfboard stretch. Nitro continued to gain momentum w/ another unique back/neck breaker before going back to the surfboard stretch. Hardy fought back, though, and escaped the move w/ a two-footed rolling mule kick. Jeff got rolling with a back elbows and clotheslines, followed by a spinning back kick. Nitro tried to escape to the outside, but Hardy yanked him back in with a hair pull and connected on a nice pinning combo. Hardy then scored another near fall following the Whisper in the Wind. Melina then pulled Nitro out of the ring, but didn’t stop Hardy from hitting a baseball slide and a tight rope across the guardrail clothesline. Back in the ring, Nitro went to the top rope, but Hardy caught up with him and back dropped him off. Then finish came when Hardy defeated Nitro with a Swanton Bomb to become the new Intercontinental Champion at 10:39. (CMV1 rating- ** ½). (CMV1 note- too short w/ a commercial break in b/t to amount to much above an average match. I think it took away from Hardy’s title win to have it thrown in as the second match on the card, but so it goes w/ the IC title)

JR and King introduced highlights of Edge winning the title from Cena at NYR, after the Elimination Chamber match had ended…

Backstage, DX tried to get Coach to open his office door. They pretended to be room service, among other things. DX implied some rather risqué things about what Coach was doing in there all alone.

Backstage, Maria interviewed the new IC Champ, Jeff Hardy. They took a look back at just moments ago when Hardy won the belt. Hardy said the belt was the reason he came back to Raw. Melina interrupted and yelled a lot. Hardy put his hand over her mouth. (CMV1 note- Hardy is bad on the mic)

Further backstage, Coach told Vince McMahon that he didn’t think he could run Raw like the Chairman could…He said he’d do what VKM wanted him to do. He then walked out of the office and looked around for DX. He didn’t see them until suddenly Triple H showed up in front him. He turned around only to see HBK blocking his only other exit. Coach looked down to find a boom box playing old Western music. He got scared and ran into the girl’s locker room. DX followed, w/ HBK holding his hand over his eyes. Triple H hit on the ladies, while HBK chased after Coach. Coach eventually found himself in the presence of a fat guy dancing around in a g-string. He ran and tripped on a wet floor, allowing DX to catch up with him and toss him out of the arena in a trash can. (CMV1 note- this was pretty stupid)

Highlights were shown of Cena regaining the title at the Royal Rumble…

Backstage, the Spirit Squad was approached by DX, who informed them that they’d be running things tonight. HBK said that the Squad was in direct violation of the new dress code and that they’d have to change. They asked what would happen if they didn’t comply, which HHH responded by busting out the sledge hammer.

Match 3: Umaga (w/ AAE) vs. Snitsky
-(CMV1 note- it was announced that, next week, Umaga would face Kane in a loser leaves Raw match). Snitsky got the upper hand the early going, knocking down Umaga w/ a diving shoulder tackle. Umaga used superior strength to toss Snitsky into the air and catch him on the way down with a Samoan Drop. He followed with a running rear splash in the corner. The finish came when Umaga destroyed Snitsky w/ the Samoan Spike at 1:05. (CMV1 rating- ¼ *) (CMV1 note- ).

Backstage, Randy Orton was asked about having to face Carlito next. Orton said he didn’t care about what Carlito thought about being cool. RKO said what was cool was his beating Carlito at Unforgiven, in addition to being the Legend Killer and the finishing move, the RKO…

Match 4: Carlito vs. Randy Orton
-A lock-up started things off, w/ the two rolling around the ropes before the ref ordered a break. Orton blasted Carlito right in the knee with his boot and tossed him shoulder-first into the ring post. On the outside, Orton worked over the arm. Back in the ring, Orton again threw Carlito shoulder-first into the ring post, and then used the steel for leverage in applying an arm bar. A snapmare followed from the Legend Killer, who followed with a jumping knee drop. Orton taunted the crowd, but in doing so opened himself up to a Carlito hurricanrana. CCC couldn’t sustain the momentum, as Orton connected on an armbar takedown and then synched in a key lock. Randy switched over to an armbar, but then Carlito came back and traded blows with him. Carlito used a springboard back elbow, a running knee lift, and a clothesline w/ his bad arm in a comeback effort. He then hit a springboard rolling Senton splash and followed with a Lionsault for a near fall. Orton tried for his unique backbreaker, but Carlito countered. Randy tried to back drop Carlito over the top rope, but Carlito countered again and landed on the apron. CCC looked to finish Orton off with a springboard cross body, but the Legend Killer countered, rolled thru, and scored the pinfall with a handful of tights. Orton defeated Carlito at 4:05. (CMV1 rating- * ¼) (CMV1 note- I wish they’d let these two wrestle a lengthy match, as I’m sure they could put on a good one. I hope this isn’t the last time we see these guys wrestle)

Highlights of RVD defeating Cena to win the WWE title (via Edge interference) at ECW ONS aired…

Backstage, DX urged the Squad to come out in their new outfits or they’d be stripped of their titles…After the Squad reluctantly agreed, Trips said that those guys were really gay. HBK said that there wasn’t anything wrong with that…

A Cryme Tyme vignette aired, this time w/ the new tag team stealing some food from a cop and running away from him to train for agility.

Match 5: Nicky (w/ the Spirit Squad) vs. Sgt. Slaughter
-(CMV1 note- the Squad were dressed as female cheerleaders and one of them had skid marks on the bloomers). Slaughter locked on the Cobra Clutch almost immediately, but Nicky made it to the ropes to break the count. He continued to dominate until Nicky tossed him out of the ring, causing him to bump hard on the floor. The rest of the Squad took advantage. Back in the ring, Nicky hooked on a sleeper hold, but Slaughter countered into the Cobra Clutch. Nicky used a jumping double knee strike to score a near fall after he escaped the Clutch again. Suddenly, on the Titan Tron, HHH appeared and told Nicky that he forgot part of his outfit (as he held up a pair of skimpy thong underwear). The distraction allowed Slaughter to defeat Nicky at 3:03. (CMV1 rating- ¾ *) (CMV1 note- not bad, believe it or not)

Highlights of Edge regaining the WWE title in a triple threat match in July aired…

    The Marine premieres tomorrow night!

Match 6: 1st Round of Women’s title Tournament- Mickie James vs. Victoria
-(CMV1 note- DX ordered the ladies to wrestle in lingerie). Victoria grabbed an armbar to start off, but Mickie did a cartwheel to escape and monkey flipped Victoria for her first offensive maneuver of the match. Victoria regained control with a several shots to the gut and lower back. Mickie came back with a series of mounted forearms and a couple of clothesline. James appeared to injury her knee, but still managed to attempt a head scissor take down. Victoria countered and tried for a powerbomb, but Mickie countered the counter and tried for a sunset flip. Victoria blocked it and locked in a Boston Crab. The finish came soon after Mickie escaped, as James got the win after countering a pinning combo into roll-up. Mickie advanced to the next round of the tourney at 2:49. (CMV1 rating- ½ *) (CMV1 note- not too bad, but a little sloppy at times)

Highlights of Cena giving Edge an FU thru an announce table at SNME aired…

Backstage, DX approached Eric Bischoff and Chris Masters, who were chatting backstage about Bisch’s new book. Bischoff said they did make it into the book, but only because he wanted to point out that in his opinion, DX was a blatant rip off of the N.W.O. They asked Masters when his book was coming out. Chris said he wanted to write a nutritional book. Trips laughed at that notion, and asked if it’d be called “How to lose 50 pounds in 4 weeks.” HBK asked Trips if they really were a rip off of the N.W.O. Trips said that he who laughs last, laughs best. They shared a hearty, Dr. Evil-like laugh. (CMV1 note- interesting to see the DX-N.W.O. references in the same breath. Perhaps they are prepping for a potential feud b/t the two at Survivor Series)

Highlights of Edge retaining the WWE title against Cena at Summerslam aired…

Highlights of Cena winning back the WWE title at Unforgiven aired…

Match 7: Steel Cage Match- WWE Champion John Cena vs. Edge (w/ Lita)
-(CMV1 note- title was on the line). They circled the ring before locking up in the center. Edge immediately grabbed an armbar on Cena’s injured limb, but Cena fought back and the two traded attempts to toss each other’s faces into the steel cage. Cena connected on a fisherman’s suplex for the first pin attempt of the night, but Edge came back quickly with a boot to the arm. Edge continued to work on the arm that the SD superstars injured last week. Cena stopped Edge’s first escape attempt (thru the door) and gave him a back drop. The crowd was very behind Cena, who stopped Edge’s second escape attempt (over the top) and slammed him from off the top rope. Cena then made his first escape attempt, but Edge didn’t allow him much time to climb. The challenger proceeded to counter a Cena FU attempt into an Impaler DDT for a near fall. Edge then grabbed another armbar, but Cena back dropped him to break the hold. Cena followed with the Throwback face drop for a near fall and tried to climb the cage w/ one arm. Edge caught up to him dropped Cena’s arm across the top rope. With Cena a sitting duck trapped b/t the ropes and the cage, Edge connected on a Spear. He then climbed the cage, but Cena caught up to him. The two battled on the top rope, trading blows that nearly knocked each of them to the mat. Cena eventually scored with a one-handed facebuster off the top rope. We then got a dreaded mid-match commercial break, and that quite frankly sucks. Back from the break, Edge had Cena locked in a modified Crossface-type maneuver. Cena fought back to his feet and gave Edge a belly-to-belly suplex. Edge came back soon after with a spinning wheel kick for a near fall and tried to escape via the door. Cena grabbed his foot and the two struggled for position. Edge kicked Cena’s arm and the door was closed. The former champ then threw the champ into the steel cage, arm-first. Edge ascended the cage and got one leg over the top, but Cena caught up to him and grabbed hold of it. Both men found themselves on the top of the cage, punching away at each other. Edge raked Cena’s eyes and knocked him back down to the upper rungs of the ring-side of the cage. He tried to escape, but Cena wouldn’t let go of his leg, eventually pulling him back into the ring. They eventually found themselves standing on the top rope, but Edge brought them back down to the mat with a back drop. Nice! 1…2…No! Cena kicked out! Edge made it to his feet and started to climb the cage again. Cena knocked Edge down and crotched him on the top rope. The champ then made his usual comeback, complete with clothesline and the Prototype spinning back drop, and capped off with the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena then went for the kill with the FU, but Edge grabbed the cage to prevent the finish. He eventually rammed Cena’s head into the cage and went for an escape over the top. Cena caught up to him and tried to FU him off the top rope. Edge countered into the electric chair, but Cena countered and went for the FU again. The challenger countered and hit the Edge O’Matic. Frustrated, Edge tried to escape thru the door, but once again Cena prevented it. At that point, Lita tried to interfere but got sent to the back as a result. She did manage to toss a steel chair into the ring, though. The climax came when Edge knocked out the ref, allowing him to grab the chair and swing for the fences at Cena. The champ ducked it, though, grabbed the chair, and drilled Edge over the head. Cena immediately locked in the STFU, but there was no ref. Cade and Murdoch showed up and broke into the cage. They beat up Cena and tried to pull Edge out of the ring so that he could get the cheap title win, but DX came to the rescue and cleared the cowboys from the ringside area. Edge tried to get in Triple H’s face, but at that moment HBK hit a superkick on Murdoch that sent him crashing into the cage door, which further found its way into Edge’s face. The finish came when Cena hit the FU, pinned Edge, and retained the WWE title at 19:11. (CMV1 rating- *** ½) (CMV1 note- damn good match w/ an ending that will still allow Edge to have grounds for another title shot. These guys have found their niche, working together and putting on some good matches in an intense rivalry. Edge is good for the main-event scene, and I’ll be interested in seeing what is in store for the budding conflict b/t Edge and DX)

All in all…Well, there were a lot of matches again this week, but the difference b/t last week and this week was that we got some lengthier bouts tonight. Both title matches got a fair amount of time, w/ the cage match easily being the highlight of the night. Cena and Edge worked another strong match…I didn’t like how they built to Hardy’s title win, though. I think it should’ve happened on PPV w/ a bigger build-up, not in some random Raw title bout. The rest of the show was fairly lackluster, although the DX-N.W.O references ought to give the IWC plenty to chat about until next week. I’ll give this show a respectable 6/10 for the three positive things that I saw and call it a night…
