    THE WRESTLING MENU #191

Welcome one and all to the 191st edition of The Wrestling Menu, the column that is sure to satisfy your taste buds when it comes to discussing all things wrestling.

I just want to get one sports-oriented thing off my chest before we begin: I am on strike from watching ESPN SportsCenter until they stop showing footage of 12 year olds playing baseball. F**k, if I wanted to see kids play sport, I could go down to the local park... and would probably get thrown in jail for doing so!

I actually haven’t had access to a computer for the past week, so I’m almost in a guinea pig phase right now when it comes to professional wrestling. This has happened to me a couple of times before in my column-writing tenure here at LOP & there was something refreshing in watching the WWE when you didn’t know some of the rumored plans for what was going to happen.

Because of the above fact, this column here is a pre-written one from about 10 days ago. I actually watched the Jake the Snake DVD a couple of weekends back. I’m hoping to have my computer up & running by the end of this week, so fingers crossed. As the phrase goes; Men are from Mars… Women are from Venus… Computers are from Hell.

Wow… I’m only 9 editions away from the big 200. I actually flirted with the idea of doing something grandiose for that milestone edition, but I’m struggling to even keep up posting a weekly column & replying to all feedback right now to consider it too seriously. I may end up just working it so that my 5th annual ‘Rookie Rankings’ column becomes the milestone edition. I think it would be quite fitting since the inaugural 2002 rankings were part of my first ever column on the LOP main page.

    On with the slithery show…..

    JAKE ROBERTS DVD REVIEW

The full title of this 2 disc set is ‘Jake “The Snake” Roberts: Pick Your Poison’. It features a documentary portion that runs for 105 minutes & is broken up into 36 chapters. It also features 13 complete matches (sort of), as well as a heap of non-match extras. There are also some hidden little items that, for some reason, are called Easter Eggs.

    APPETIZERS – Documentary

This portion of the DVD begins rather strangely with a poem (of sorts) written by Jake Roberts called ‘Thieves of Dreams’. After the brief intro package we go into a relatively long (10 minute) chapter of Jake talking about his troubled childhood. His mum left him, he saw his wrestler father (Grizzly Smith) about twice a year, his grandfather was an alcoholic & his grandmother died of cancer. Not to mention his sister who fell pregnant 3 times before the age of 18! Roberts openly admits he didn’t trust women, but this didn’t stop him from marrying his high-school girlfriend and getting her pregnant after graduating!

It was Jake’s dad that got him involved in wrestling by asking him to referee down in Louisiana. This got his foot in the door, but Grizzly (while being very popular in the business) wasn’t a great father & belittled Jake about his future aspirations. This motivated Jake & he spent some time wrestling along the south coast part time. After being treated badly in Mid-South Wrestling, Jake went to Mid-Atlantic Wrestling out of Charlotte & tagged with the likes of Ricky Steamboat & Dory Funk. A great story is told here of how Jake changed finishers from a knee-lift to the DDT purely by accident.

Jake’s tag-team with Funk was going nowhere fast, so he moved to Georgia Championship Wrestling where he developed immensely & had a well-promoted feud with Ronnie Garvin. But just as his career was skyrocketing, Vince McMahon purchased GCW & Roberts walked out & headed back down to Mid-South, where he was again treated poorly. He finally swallowed his pride, called Vince & became a WWF superstar in 1986. Not long after his debut, Jake agreed to carry a snake (Damian) to the ring (an idea he had considered before). This is when Jake’s career really took off & we see him giving a great backstage interview, as well as some action of him (& Damian) in the ring. This includes a feud against Steamboat, who brought a dragon lizard out with him to combat the snake!

Next up for the rising superstar was his own segment; The Snake Pit. Many clips are shown here proving how Jake took his mic work to new heights with his monologues & phrases. Some of his guests are shown as well, including the night The Honky Tonk Man badly injured his neck with his patented guitar shot. This resulted in the WrestleMania 3 match between the two. Subsequent very good feuds against Ted Dibiase & Rick Rude are featured, the latter of which included Jake’s wife Cheryl.

One of the reasons why Cheryl was brought on the road with the WWF was to help Jake with his alcohol & drug problems, which he had mentioned on & off up until this stage of the documentary. Jake & many of his colleagues speak about his major problems & how they affected his life in such a negative way. Jake readily admits that he was addicted, as well as very unfaithful to his wife. He even states that he eventually became suicidal!

Following a brief chapter telling some stories about Jake’s reptilian friends, his feud with the snake-fearing Andre The Giant during 1989 is highlighted. This includes many memorable moments, including what happened at WrestleMania 5. By this time, Jake’s face run was reaching its peak & he was practically main-eventing, despite not getting a proper crack at the WWE Championship. His 1991 feud against Earthquake (John Tenta) is featured next. This feud ended with Earthquake sitting on & squashing Damian, which only resulted in Jake debuting a bigger snake named Lucifer.

Roberts turned heel soon after to team with The Undertaker to battle with The Ultimate Warrior. But, as Jake entertainingly explains, he was the victim of The Warrior’s bad business decisions & the feud ended when Warrior was fired. But Jake thankfully moved on to another huge feud with Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage, which included the infamous cobra bite, which is shown & discussed!

A combination of Jake’s addictions & a falling out with Vince resulted in Roberts threatening to not go out to the ring for his promoted WrestleMania 8 bout against The Undertaker, unless he was released to go to WCW! The rest is history as Jake was granted his release & lost to ‘Taker at the Hoosier Dome. But just before Roberts began in WCW, the balance of power there shifted to Bill Watts, who he didn’t get along with. So for a lot less money than he was planning to make, Jake debuted at The Great American Bash in 1992 attacking Sting in a tag-team match. This resulted in their ‘Coal Miners Glove Match’ at Halloween Havoc a couple of months later.

Following a “wrestling or marriage” ultimatum from his wife, Jake retired… for 3 years (although a match in the extras portion of the DVD proves that he didn’t completely). He didn’t re-appear again in either of the big 2 companies until the WWF Royal Rumble in 1996. By this time, Jake had become a devout Christian & he used that in his new character. It didn’t really get over though, but Jake has no regrets about it & we eventually saw it result in the infamous Austin 3:16 speech & gimmick in June of that same year. Roberts’ subsequent feud with Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler is featured next & we hear joke after joke about alcoholism from Lawler & how Jake felt that the angle got too personal (both on & off screen).

The WWF then gave Jake a job as a trainer, but he didn’t transition well & soon headed back to drugs & alcohol. Not long later, Roberts was not only fired from his job, but his wife Cheryl left him! His part in the ‘Beyond The Mat’ documentary movie is then discussed (he has never watched it), as well as his ultra-brief appearances in ECW during 1997 & 1998. In late 2002, Roberts moved to the United Kingdom to try & clean up his life, while still making a living from wrestling. But following an animal cruelty charge, he returned to the U.S, where he made a popular appearance on Raw in March of 2005.

We end this portion of the DVD with Jake & a number of his colleagues (Vince, J.R, Hogan, Mean Gene, etc…) speaking on how it is amazing that Jake is still alive & how his addictions may, but shouldn’t, sadly overshadow his great wrestling career.

    ENTREE – Matches

    DISC-1

vs RICKY STEAMBOAT (The Big Event. August-28, 1986): This was called a ‘Snake Pit Match’ which was basically a No Holds Barred Match, and was held in front of 70,000+ people in Toronto. Starts frenetically with both men really selling the effective feud. But Steamboat is first to slow the pace down with a combination of chops & strange leverage moves. The 2 men then battle around ringside with Roberts using some underhanded tactics to get on top, before being leveled by a chair. Back in the ring, Ricky heads back to a resthold, but doesn’t hold it too long as he gets the crowd buzzing with a flurry of punches & chops. But Roberts gets the fan favorite back outside the ring & dominates Steamboat, including busting him open. When he feels the time is right, Jake drags Ricky back in the ring & hits a brutal gutbuster. But a nonchalant cover results in a reversal for the Steamboat win at the 10 minute mark. Solid, if unspectacular, bout that was sufficiently back & forth, as well as having above average intensity. Match Rating…7

vs THE HONKY TONK MAN (WrestleMania 3. March-29. 1987): This extra includes pre-match backstage interviews with Jake & Alice Cooper, as well as The Honky Tonk Man & Jimmy Hart. This bout also comes with alternate commentary by Jim Ross & Jake Roberts. Jake doesn’t waste any time laying into HTM with a flurry of punches. With the help of the mouth of the south, Honky eventually works his way on top & attempts to win the bout by countout, but Alice Cooper is there to continuously get Roberts back into the ring before the 10 count. Some average HTM offense follows before Jake finally makes the comeback, but falls short to a schoolboy rollup following some Jimmy hart interference at the 7 minute mark. Afterwards, Cooper & Jake throw Damian on Hart. Ho-hum match that had moments of good intensity, but just as many moments of monotony. Thankfully, it was kept short. I’ll be nice & pass it. Match Rating…5

vs ‘RAVISHING’ RICK RUDE (October-24, 1988) Emanating from MSG, this match had the stipulation that the pinfall had to come from the chosen finisher of each combatant (DDT vs Rude Awakening). Rude does his usual pre-match mic-work & Jake is accompanied to the ring by wife Cheryl. Jake begins the bout with great intensity & Rude sells everything tremendously. It doesn’t take too long for ‘Ravishing’ Rick to work his way back into the bout, but a combination of antagonizing Cheryl & playing to the crowd consistently allows Jake to stay in the bout. The pace stays rather high until a Rude resthold at about the 6 minute mark. But it’s not too long until the pace picks up as both men set up for their finisher. Following an intense flurry on the outside, Roberts is the one to gain the upper hand & he eventually capitalizes on another of Rude’s trips to his wife, with a DDT for the win at the 12 minute mark. Nothing super special, but a great story is told with some real solid action. I’ve never been too high on Rude, but together with a great storyteller here, he really shows us his strengths. Match Rating…7.5

    DISC-2

with RICKY STEAMBOAT vs JIM NELSON & MIKE MILLER (Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. September-9, 1981): Better than the usual squash match, this is a very good early look at (a short-haired) Roberts. The 2 faces team very impressively & both Jake & Ricky show a lot of potential in this bout. The jobbers only get a little bit of offense, yet this is somehow never boring despite lasting for almost 6 minutes. A squash, but a good one. Match Rating…6

vs RONNIE GARVIN (Georgia Championship Wrestling. December-3, 1983): This bout is for Roberts’ GCW World TV Title & Jake is playing the heel, while being accompanied by Paul Ellering. Extremely slow-paced with Garvin practically holding Roberts in a front headlock for the first 5 minutes of the bout. Even when the Snake is in charge, the pace only slightly picks up. At least he throws in a few different moves, but it’s nothing earth-shattering. It inexplicably takes until about the 10 minute mark before Garvin shows some life, but in true heel fashion, Roberts slides out of the ring constantly when on the defensive. The commentator basically gives the result of the match away right from the beginning because he constantly mentions the 15 minute time limit. Not bad once it moved up a few gears, but that took way too long. A half decent story was told, but was at the expense of the entertainment factor. I may be a bit harsh, but I was so disappointed in this that I’m going to fail it. Match Rating…4.5

vs ‘LEAPING’ LANNY POFFO (March-16, 1986): Emanating from MSG, this is Jake The Snake’s WWF debut & Leaping Lanny has a pre-match poem for us to celebrate the occasion. Poffo adds some good pace & acrobatic offense to this bout, which is fortunately even enough to be sufficiently entertaining. Jake slows the match down a lot for storyline purposes, but Poffo thankfully has enough counters up his sleeve to keep things moving. The simultaneous lowlight & highlight comes when Lanny botches a springboard something-or-other to the outside & seems injured. The match then abruptly ends with a DDT at the 7 minute mark & Damian is unleashed on WWF audiences. Decent enough filler type of match. Match Rating…5

vs EARTHQUAKE (April-27, 1991): From the ‘WWF Superstars’ show. The big man doesn’t waste any time attacking Roberts, but Jake quickly fights back & plays some mind games by unleashing Damian within the first minute. The match eventually continues (with Damian back in the bag & now under the ring) with Earthquake hitting Jake a few times & then tying him up in the ropes. In the meantime, Earthquake grabs the bag (apparently containing Damian) & squashes him with a sit-down splash! I presume Jake wins by DQ at the 4 minute mark. Jake then cries like a baby after taking a peek inside the bag afterwards. Hardly a match & I will refrain from rating it because of this. But as a segment, it was a decent storyline bout with good angle progression. Match Rating…N/A, but Segment Rating…6

vs UN-NAMED OPPONENT (November-23, 1991): The bout lasts less than a minute & ends with a DDT. But the reason why this is on this DVD is because after the bout, commentator Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage comes down to the ring (after some taunting from Jake) & gets attacked. Roberts ties Savage up in the ropes & unleashes a cobra on him. And no kidding, the cobra sticks his fangs into Randy’s arm for over 30 seconds. Jake actually has some trouble parting snake from arm!!! Savage definitely deserved a pay-rise after this. All in all, this was 8 minutes in length. Unforgettable! Match Rating…N/A, but Segment Rating…9

vs STING (WCW Halloween Havoc. October-25, 1992): This was a ‘Coal Miners Glove Match’ where an approximately 20 foot pole on the corner of the ring held a heavy glove of some description. Methodically paced for the most part, this bout struggled to get past its gimmick while in the ring, but did show some good flashes of intensity & action in a few trips around the ringside area. Jake eventually hits a wicked DDT which should allow him to climb the pole, but an injured arm & some no-selling by Sting cuts him off & allows Sting to get the glove instead. In the meantime, Cactus Jack brings a cobra out to the ring, resulting in an overbooked finale that sees Sting win at the 10 minute mark with the use of the glove, and Jake get bitten by the cobra. Over-gimmicked bout that sees the 2 not meshing with each other too successfully. Sufficiently entertaining though. Match Rating…5

vs DIRTY WHITE BOY (Smoky Mountain Wrestling. May-7, 1994): This match was for DWB’s (from memory, his name was Tony Anthony. But he was the guy who played TL Hopper in the WWF from the mid 90s) SMW HeavyWeight Title & the champ happens to be wearing an eye-patch due to an injured eye. Jake takes great pleasure in getting some comedy out of this & taunts the SMW champ at every opportunity he can. Neither man was in their best shape here & it was for mainly this reason that the pace was rather methodical & mat-wrestling was used throughout. Mid-match interference by The Samurai results in the eye-patch coming off & this is where the heel Roberts really gets to show his cocky side. A flurry of offense from DWB is halted when Jake takes a ringside still camera & blinds the champ with the flash-bulb. A DDT later & we have a new champ at the 13 minute mark. Not especially entertaining, but a decent enough storyline bout & well-placed on this DVD set if only to see how out of shape Roberts got in 18 months. Match Rating…5.5

vs ‘STONE COLD’ STEVE AUSTIN (King Of The Ring. June-23, 1996): More of a storyline bout, as Roberts was selling bad rib injuries suffered at the hands of Vader in the semi-final of the tournament held earlier on the same night. Stone Cold isn’t exactly oblivious to this fact & attacks the ribs at the bell. Austin dominates the first 3 minutes & even removes the rib bandaging. Commissioner Gorilla Monsoon comes out to see if the match should continue & Roberts uses this as a distraction to mount some offense & set up the DDT. But Stone Cold blocks it & soon after hits the Stone Cold Stunner for the win at the 5 minute mark. I recall the tournament & this match feeling anti-climactic on the night, but this storyline match has aged rather well mainly due to the coronation aftermath which is thankfully included here. Match Rating…5.5

vs JERRY ‘THE KING’ LAWLER (SummerSlam. August-18, 1996): Lawler does some pre-match mic work & even finds time to make fun of guest commentator Mark Henry. Jake has enough of the alcoholic jokes & smothers Lawler with his huge yellow snake named Revelations. Roberts dominates the first couple of minutes, but Lawler turns the tide with the help of a fans cup of coke! The end of the match comes soon after when The King strikes Jake to the throat with a bottle of Jim Beam at the 4 minute mark. Lawler pours the same bottle of alcohol all over Roberts afterwards until Mark Henry steps in. Not a bad storyline & comedy bout, but the anti-climactic ending hurt it way too much. But again, something in the entertainment value makes me pass this. Match Rating…5

with TOMMY DREAMER vs JUSTIN CREDIBLE & JACK VICTORY (ECW November 2 Remember): Oh man, talk about a mess of a match. It basically begins as a handicap bout with Credible & Victory having Jason, Mr Wright, Nicole Bass & Chastity with them at ringside. It then basically turns into a singles match with Dreamer against Credible… and not a bad one at that! Roberts occasionally gets involved, but I’m unsure Victory ever steps foot in the ring! Can he wrestle? The bout then breaks down into an 8 on 2 when One Man Gang & Rod Price join the heels. But then New Jack & Kronus make the save with weapons galore. Kronus also pulls off a nice top-rope somersault splash! The interferers then all somehow disappear to allow Dreamer to perform a frog splash & Spicolli Driver, but it is Roberts who finally finishes the bout off at the 13 minute mark. In typical ECW style, this was an absolute mess. But it had enough redeeming features to make it sufficiently entertaining. In fact, fans of the ECW style may feel that I have under-rated this a fair bit. Match Rating…5.5

    MAIN –Non-Match Extras

    DISC-1: THE STORIES

Jake’s Relationship With Children: A current day Roberts speaks for 2 minutes about how his late mentally-challenged step-brother has made him appreciate children more.

How He Became “The Snake”: Brief story of how he liked the name Jake (as opposed to his real name of Aurelian) & was a fan of American Football player Ken ‘The Snake’ Stabler.

Working With Dynamite Kid: Entertaining 1 minute story & impersonation concerning one half of The British Bulldogs.

Legion Of Doom: Good 4 minute story recalling how Jake was once a member of the LOD stable, King Kong Bundy’s part in it & some reflections of Hawk & Animal.

”Steamboat Saved My Life”: Fascinating 2 minute story about how a snake once made Jake black out & how Ricky got the snake off him.

Meeting Dick Ebersol: Funny story of how Jake pissed off the President of NBC Sports by telling him to take his script & shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. This includes a backstage Mean Gene interview with Jake & Damian showering! 5 minutes in length.

Snake On The Loose: Short Ricky Steamboat story on how Jake’s snake adjusted the water temperature of a shower & the resultant scaring off of a number of wrestlers in the locker-room.

Grizzly Smith: Many industry veterans speak about Jake’s dad for 2 minutes. Jake himself does not feature here.

Hogan/Jake Feud: Both men speak about how the incorrect crowd reaction (fans were split in their cheering) ended a short-lived feud between the 2. The WWF just couldn’t afford this at a time when they were heavily selling Hogan as their #1 guy. 2 minutes in length.

    DISC-2: RUN-IN’s, INTERVIEWS, PROMOS & THE SNAKE-PIT

Run-In During Dreamer vs Lawler: This was from the ECW Hardcore Heaven ppv event held on August-17, 1997. It is a 2 minute clip from the end of the match. The lights go out & Jake appears to attack both men.

Vince McMahon Interviews Jake (March-14, 1986): From the ‘Tuesday Night Titans’ talk show program, this is a sit-down interview soon after Roberts’ WWF debut. Jake makes the point that a man doesn’t have to yell to get his point across & proceeds to take out Lucifer the snake & answer a few questions from the audience. 4 minutes in length.

’Ravishing’ Rick Rude Hits on Cheryl Roberts (April-23, 1988): From the ‘Superstars’ television show, this is a classic & memorable bit of footage that started off a very good feud. 8 minutes in length.

Brother Love Interviews Jake (July-23, 1988): From the ‘Wrestling Challenge’ tv show, this is a 4 minute segment of Brother Love offending Jake & Cheryl.

’Mean’ Gene Okerlund Interviews Jake (January-27, 1990): Also from the ‘Wrestling Challenge’ show, this is an interview conducted near the entrance-way that is directed at ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted Dibiase. Jake had taken his million dollar belt & hidden it in his snake bag. 2 minutes in length.

Promo About Threatening Dibiase With Snakes (March-3, 1990): Great 80 second promo with Jake handling a number of different snake varieties.

Jake Fights With Brother Love During Interview (October-27, 1990): ‘The Model’ Rick Martel comes out to gloat about blinding Roberts, before Jake comes out, delivers a promo & eventually DDTs Brother Love. 6 minutes in length.

Interview On ‘The Barber Shop’ (May-11, 1991): From ‘Wrestling Challenge’, Jake debuts his bigger & nastier snake named Lucifer, following Damian’s squashing at the hands (or should that be a$$) of Earthquake. 4 minutes in length.

Ultimate Warrior Casket Vignette: From August of 1991, this is a ‘Superstars’ vignette where Jake talks to a frazzled looking Warrior who is lying in a casket. A silly & corny 4 minutes worth.

Ultimate Warrior Cemetery Vignette: Aired a week later on the same show, this is another 4 minutes of corniness with Warrior digging up a grave & then being buried alive by Jake. Believe it or not, Jake was motivating Warrior for his upcoming match against The Undertaker.

Ultimate Warrior Snake-Filled Room Vignette: Aired a further week later on ‘Superstars’, Roberts turns heel here in this better 5 minute vignette where he leads the Warrior to a cobra bite! The Undertaker makes a cameo here.

’Mean’ Gene Okerlund Interviews Jake (March-14, 1992): Interview conducted just before WrestleMania 8, as Jake gets ready for his match against The Undertaker. Includes footage of Roberts attacking the dead man a week earlier. Just under 3 minutes in length.

The Snake Pit With Kamala, The Wizard & Kimchee (September-6, 1986): From ‘Wrestling Challenge’ this is 2 minutes worth of The Wizard talking crap about the Ugandan Giant Kamala.

The Snake Pit With The Junkyard Dog (October-18, 1986): Some interesting, if not always understandable, byplay takes place between these 2 for about 2 minutes.

The Snake Pit With Hulk Hogan (November-22, 1986): Good & intense 2 minute segment with some great mic work from both men.

    CONCLUSION

This could be one of the most difficult WWE DVD sets to sum up in a nutshell, because it doesn’t really fit the exact structure of most other releases. The documentary is yet another excellent offering & I rate it very highly. Not only is it a sufficiently thorough career summary, but there is some genuinely classic footage & promos included. Furthermore, Jake is a great & natural storyteller. He entertainingly recalls the moments of his life that he wants to, although I must admit that he is a little difficult to understand at times.

The matches are not exactly top quality & there was never really a classic Jake match throughout his career that I can recall. But there is something sufficiently entertaining about the majority of them & they are rather well chosen to show his progress throughout the years.

But this is where the structure of the DVD differs from other 2 or 3 disc sets; Despite there being 13 matches, the set doesn’t necessarily rely on them because there are so many non-match extras. And they are of a good enough quality to make up for the match quality included. There are some genuinely memorable moments included & they are a combination of typical late 80’s/early 90’s gimmicky stuff & tremendous mic work.

This is an inconsistent, but sufficiently entertaining, 2 disc set that relies more on storytelling, non-match extras & its career summary, than the matches included. Those who feel that WWE DVDs live & die by their matches will probably find this disappointing. While those fans that followed the WWF from the mid-80s to the early 90s would be more willing to forgive the lack of match quality. Overall, I like the variety included here & there are enough classic moments included for me to recommend this… if only at a discounted price.

Ok, that wraps up #191. I hope you enjoyed this DVD Review. Hopefully, it helped you decide on a purchasing decision if you were about to toss a coin on it. Things are more promising on the email fron now, so if you have any questions regarding this DVD, please do not hesitate to ask me. My e-mail address is DaveyBoy123@bigpond.com. But if you are an LOP Forums member, it would be much appreciated if you could leave feedback on my thread at http://www.lopforums.com/showthread.php?t=217

I thought my streak may have ended with this column, but things look positive for me having my home computer back in working order some time tomorrow (Thursday). If so, I will scrap a planned DVD Review & write on Kurt Angle, ECW & something else. I finally get the opportunity to watch the weekly ECW show, although we are getting it on a 3 day delay, so timeliness will be a little bit of an issue. So look out for next week's column same Wednesday time on the same LOP channel. Until then, this is DaveyBoy signing off & asking you to remember that dinner is best served in 3 courses.
