    The Raw Report (08/21/06)

A recap of last night’s Summerslam PPV aired.

The show opened with WWE Champion Edge coming out to the ring without the title belt. The crowd didn’t give him a very warm welcome, but Edge went on anyway, saying that he had waited his entire life for this moment. He said that the people who bought their tickets tonight to see Cena come out with the title were all wrong. Edge hyped the fact that he beat the odds to retain the title. But where’s his championship belt? And where is the Women’s Champion, Lita? The crowd chanted “You Suck.” Edge said they couldn’t rain on his parade. The camera cut to Lita live at the Bridgeport harbor, and she had the WWE title with her. Edge said that she had John Cena’s title with her, not his WWE title. Therefore, Edge wanted to rid the world of the spinner belt with a burial at sea. Lita said it’d be her pleasure and tossed the spinner belt into the water. Edge proclaimed that the era of John Cena was over…and that the Rated R Era was just beginning. He then presented the same belt that Cena had, just with a Rated R spinner in the center of it. Edge asked if there were any other challengers out there that wanted to be a part of his story. At that point, Jeff Hardy made his return to Raw and interrupted the champion. Jeff got in Edge’s face. Edge said he thought he died three years ago and poked fun at ruining Matt Hardy’s career. Jeff attacked with a reverse mule kick. He tried to follow with a Swanton Bomb, but Edge rolled out of the ring before Hardy could get an attempt in. The segment closed with Edge scampering to the back, while Hardy posed in the ring. (CMV1 note- that’s a hell of a way for Hardy to come back to Raw…that would obviously have to set-up some sort of match for those two in the future. Hardy, when motivated, can do some exciting things in the ring and be a productive performer for Raw. We’ll see how motivated he is in the coming weeks. Anyhow, Edge cut a good promo, but I really wanted to see the old belt back…I don’t mind the spinner, but I like tradition)

The King and JR hyped Kane vs. Nitro for the IC title, Flair vs. Orton, and more! Also, the trailer for John Cena’s movie, “The Marine,” will air to tonight!

A hype video was shown for the two-disc Mr. McMahon DVD. (CMV1 note- hell, I’ll get that)

Match 1: World Tag Team Champs The Spirit Squad vs. Eugene, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and the Highlanders
-The squad jumped the faces before the match began. Johnny started off the official match against Eugene by working over his arm. Eugene and the crowd got fired up. Johnny continued to dominate until Eugene caught him with a heel kick and an airplane spin. Robby tagged in and tossed Johnny into Rory’s head. The Highlander followed with a dropkick. Johnny came back with a rolling kick after the Squad got involved. A double suplex followed from Kenny and Johnny. Kenny came in and hit a jumping back elbow for a near fall. Mikey and Kenny combined for a leg toss-moonsault. Robby fought back, but ended up trapped in the heels corner. Mitch and Mikey then combined for an assisted jumping punch in the corner. Kenny tagged in soon after and took Robby down with a hard right hand. A swinging neckbreaker followed, but Kenny proceeded to miss his top rope leg drop, allowing Rory to get the hot tag and clean house. He hit a Rock Bottom into a backbreaker for a near fall, but another Squad member got involved. The finish came when the Highlanders got the pin following a springboard reverse suplex. The Highlanders, Eugene, and Duggan defeated the Spirit Squad at 6:12. (CMV1 rating- * ¼) (CMV1 note- it was fairly entertaining, but very formulaic with Robby getting isolated and making the hot tag that led to the finish)

Backstage, Edge busted into McMahon’s office only to find the Coach working out on his Bowflex machine. Edge wanted Hardy in a match…so he got it. The McMahons walked in after Edge left and asked if DX had arrived yet. Coach said they had not, and Vince told him to leave. VKM said he couldn’t believe that people were saying they lost at Summerslam…Shane said it wasn’t legal and should be stricken from the record book. Vince said it wasn’t over with DX.

JR and King thanked the fans for ordering Summerslam.

Backstage, Todd Grisham interviewed Randy Orton. The Legend Killer said he beat Hogan last night despite Hulk’s foot being on the rope. He said he was going to use that aggression he’d built up in the last 24 hours to beat the hell out of a real legend in Ric Flair. Carlito showed up and interrupted the segment. He said that Hogan getting his hand raised in victory was cool. Orton asked Carlito where he was last night. Not on the card that’s for sure. He insulted Carlito and demanded respect of him.

Further backstage, Triple H told us a quick story. After overcoming the odds to defeat Vince McMahon, DX couldn’t help, but notice Vince’s private plane flying overhead. Shawn Michaels appeared w/ a toy plane and pretend to crash and catch fire ala Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights. Trips said he and Shawn had to see the plane for themselves. Unfortunately, Trips said, there was an incident during their visit to Vince’s plane. They sipped champagne as they marveled over their “scratch” that they’d put on the plane. Of course, that scratch was a large DX logo that they painted on the side of the aircraft. The camera cut back to Vince’s office, where VKM was so irate he threw a TV.

The WWE Rewind showed Lita winning the Women’s title last week.

Match 2: Trish Stratus vs. Victoria
-Victoria struck first with a hard right hand, but Trish came back quickly with forearm shots, a splash in the corner, and a dropkick that sent Victoria to the outside. Trish followed with a Lou Thesz press to the outside and then slammed Victoria’s back into the ring post. Back in the ring, Trish scored a near fall with a rolling clutch pin. She tried for the Stratusfaction, but Victoria countered into a backbreaker. Victoria took control for a short time until Trish countered a backbreaker into a head scissor. Trish later nailed a top rope hurricanrana, but Victoria came back and attempted the Widow’s Peak. Trish countered and hit the Stratusfaction for the win. Trish won at 3:02. (CMV1 rating- *). (CMV1 note- good action, but short)

Vince and Shane came to the ring right after the women’s match ended. Vince did not look happy. He took the mic and said that he supposed that the people enjoyed what DX did to his plane. He said he it was a 30 million dollar aircraft and the people encourage that kind of behavior. The crowd chanted “You Suck,” but Vince continued on by saying that DX sucked and would get what is coming to them when the cops arrest them in a few minutes. A commercial break interrupted the segment. Back from the break, Vince was still pacing around waiting to see what the police were going to do. The camera cut to the Bridgeport airport, where DX were standing by from the roof of the WWE Headquarters in Stamford. DX said that Vince did have a lot going for him, w/ a jet, a big company, etc. They said Vince had left his mark. Vince yelled that they were supposed to be at the airport. Obviously, DX wanted to leave their mark on WWE Headquarters…they had spray-painted a big DX logo on the building. Vince looked sick to his stomach. As the McMahons left the ringside area, the crowd chanted “Nah Nah Nah Nah, Nah Nah Nah Nah, Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye!” (CMV1 note- pretty amusing segment, as they continue to find a way to continue the DX-like tactics without crossing over the HBK-line. Still, I can’t say I’m thrilled that this feud is continuing. They need to add a new cog into the storyline to make it more interesting)

This week in wrestling history, SD debuted.

Backstage, Shane said he couldn’t believe it. Vince still looked sick. Mick Foley walked up and said hello. Vince wasn’t happy that Mick called him Vince. The McMahons mentioned how Foley had bad mouthed him the last few weeks in his promos. Vince said he could join the “Kiss my Ass” club tonight. Foley laughed at the ridiculous notion, but Vince said if Foley didn’t kiss his ass, somebody was going to get fired. (CMV1 note- rumor has it that Foley will be off Raw after tonight).

Match 3: WWE Champion Edge (w/ Women’s Champ Lita) vs. Jeff Hardy
-(CMV1 note- this was a non-title match). Jeff hit a baseball slide and a plancha to the outside before the match even started. Hardy continued to hammer away. Back in the ring, the bell sounded and we were underway. Edge tossed Jeff under the bottom rope and crashing to the outside. He then tossed him into the steel ring steps. Edge proceeded to kick him in the face and taunt the crowd. The champ used the ring post to work over Hardy’s back. Hardy came back with a boot to the face and a clothesline. He tried for a top rope stomp, but missed and settled for a DDT. He went for the Twist of Fate, but Edge countered and hit a falling reverse DDT for a near fall. The crowd got behind Hardy, who came back with a Whisper in the Wind corkscrew plancha. The two then traded blows mid-ring before Hardy caught Edge with a modified One and Only. Hardy hit the Twist of Fate and went to the top for the Swanton Bomb. He nailed it! 1…2…Huh? The ref didn’t count to three, but Lita pulled Edge out of the ring. At that point, John Cena came to the ring and attacked Edge. Edge tried to run, but Cena chased and beat him down everywhere he went. Edge finally got away from Cena and headed outside the building. Cena gave chase as we went to commercial. Hardy and Edge fought to a no-contest at 4:42. (CMV1 rating- * ½) (CMV1 note- good action while it lasted, but a confusing and I’m going to assume botched finish didn’t help it. Again, we can’t have a good match…everything has to be a lead-in to a predictable run-in)

JR and King showed clips of the Cena-Edge chase from moments ago. The camera then cut outside to where Cena and Edge were brawling near the harbor. They battled all over the place and eventually to a pier. Cena basically kicked his ass until he threw Edge into the water. It wasn’t a far drop, though. Cena screamed that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Backstage, Melina thanked Mick for quitting before Ric could hit her. She asked what he was going to do about tonight. (CMV1 note- Obviously, Vince is going to threaten to fire Melina, Foley is going to kiss Vince’s ass, and Melina is going to turn on Foley)

Match 4: Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro (w/ Melina) vs. Kane
-(CMV1 note- title was on the line). Nitro grabbed a headlock to start, but got a shoulder tackle for his troubles. He tried to play cat and mouse with Kane, but got a big boot for his further troubles. Johnny then countered a side walk slam and a splash in the corner and mounted Kane for a few punches. He then hung Kane’s neck over the top rope and tried a springboard dropkick. His dropkick bounced right off Kane, though. Kane leveled Nitro and went to the top rope. He came flying off and connected on a flying clothesline, but Umaga interfered right after and prompted a DQ. Kane defeated Nitro via DQ in under a minute and a half. (CMV1 rating- ½ *). After the match, Umaga hit the Samoan Spike and several headbutts, followed by a diving Samoan Spike from the second rope. Kane was spitting blood as the segment came to a close. (CMV1 note- well, I didn’t really enjoy that, but at least we are finally seeing Umaga in a feud)

Layla won the Diva Search in case you forgot…

The trailer for “The Marine” was aired. (CMV1 note- actually looks kind of good)

Match 5: Randy Orton vs. Ric Flair
-(CMV1 note- my girlfriend is watching wrestling with me for the first time…She wants to be Mrs. Orton or Mrs. Cena…if you suffer from a similar problem with your girlfriend, send me an email…we’ll rant about it). Orton charged, but Flair caught him with chops. Randy countered with a suplex and clotheslined him over the top rope and to the outside. Orton then dropkicked Flair as he reached the apron, knocking him back to the floor. The Legend Killer followed the legend to the outside and gave him a suplex on the floor. He proceeded to rake his boot across Flair’s face and pummel him with right handed punches. Back in the ring, Orton continued his brutal assault with several stomps. To the outside they went again, where Orton tossed Flair into the ring steps. Orton tossed Flair back into the ring and stomped away at him. Flair’s cut was reopened, but he fought back with knife edge chops. The finish came when Orton pinned Flair following the RKO at 4:17. However, a post-match beatdown prompted the ref to reverse his decision. Thus, Flair defeated Orton. (CMV1 rating- *). Orton set-up for another RKO, but Carlito made the save. (CMV1 note- slow, plodding match, but a decent storyline set-up for Orton-Carlito, which is a match I’d very much like to see)

JR and King showed clips of Regal kissing Vince’s ass. If you want to see more of Vince’s ass, please order the new “McMahon” DVD…

Vince, Shane, and Mick Foley (w/ Melina) came to the ring for the Kiss My Ass club segment. Foley said he wasn’t doing it. Vince said he was. Foley said he loved his job, he loved the WWE, but he didn’t need either. He has plenty of money and doesn’t need this…but Vince said he wasn’t trying to fire Foley, so not to worry about getting fired if he didn’t pucker up. Rather, Vince said he’d fire Melina if he didn’t kiss his ass. Mick said she was the only person that was worth him kissing Vince’s ass. Melina said Mick didn’t need to do it. Mick said he’d do it, while she cried. He said she’d be a star for a very long time and it’d be worth it to do this for her. Mick kissed Vince’s ass. Melina turned on Foley and gave him a low blow. Vince put his arm around her and Melina told Mick he was “Fired!” VKM said he liked getting his ass kissed. He, Shane, and Melina walked to the back, but he kept talking about how much he liked to get his ass played with. Melina stopped over by Nitro, while Vince and Shane walked to the outside. Outside, Vince admitted to Shane that DX had broken him. Shane agreed they’d gone too far. They got in their limo. As the limo drove away, you could see that DX had attached a steel hook and chain to the axel of the vehicle. Before too long, the chain ran out of slack and the limo’s axel was ripped out from under it. The McMahons got out of the limo and revealed that on the other side of the car, there was a large DX logo spray-painted on its side. Vince screamed and looked as if he was losing his grip. That’s where the show ended. (CMV1 note- not a good segment at all, folks…)

All in all…Wow…Now that’s the kind of show I’d want to show a non-fan! Syke! This show, save for the opening segment and bits and pieces of the Edge-Hardy match, was pretty much the same boring crap that’s been shown for the last two months. I’m getting bored with this nonsense. I don’t even have any further comments after that closing segment…can we get a good match for crying out loud!!! I’m giving this show a CMV1 low 4/10 and calling it a night…and I think I’m being nice …
