WWE Heat Recap for August 18, 2006

Match #1: Matt Striker vs. Rob Conway

During his ring entrance, Matt Striker cut a promo where he talked about how summer was ending and it would soon be back to school. Mercifully, Conway started beating away at Striker as soon as he got in the ring to cut the promo short. After knocking Striker to the outside with a back elbow, Conway took off after him. Conway chased Striker around ringside for a bit until they both slid back into the ring where Conway took Striker down with a big hip toss, following up with a dropkick that sent Striker outside the ring once more.

Conway went out after him again, but got a thumb to the eye from Striker this time, and then taken down by a running clothesline. Striker rolled Conway back into the ring and made the lateral press, but only got a two-count. Striker then choked Conway on the middle rope for a bit and then delivered a dropkick to Conway's back, draping him over the middle rope. As Conway hung prone on the ropes, Striker delivered a baseball slide to Conway's face.

While the referee checked on Conway, Striker removed the padding from the bottom turnbuckle. With Conway recuperating on the outside, Striker moved out after him to send him back in the ring, but ended up on the receiving end of a few right hands from Conway. Conway rolled Striker back into the ring, but as he climbed in himself, Striker kicked the middle drop to put some unwanted pressure on Conway's plums. Striker then delivered the Overdrive, as Conway was still only halfway through the ropes. Making the cover once again, Striker could only get another two-count.

Resthold time, as Striker locked in a neck lock that Conway quickly fought out of, turning into a slugfest shortly thereafter. Conway took the upper hand and after several more punches, took Striker down with a running clothesline tackle. From there, Conway went to the middle rope and caught Striker with a flying leg lariat. Striker managed to kick out at two though when Conway went for the cover.

Punching away on Striker in the corner, Conway got shoved away. Conway went right back to punching away on Striker some more. Striker collapsed in the corner (conveniently the one where he had removed the bottom turnbuckle pad), and when Conway moved in, Striker hurled Conway head first into the exposed turnbuckle. Striker makes the cover, puts his legs on the ropes for added leverage, and got the three-count and the win.

    Winner: Matt Striker

Match #2: Trevor Murdoch and Lance Cade vs. Damien Wayne and Chris Escobar

Cade started off with Wayne. Wayne locked in a headlock from the get-go, but Cade took him down quickly with a belly-to-back suplex. After delivering a few forearms to Wayne's back, Cade tagged in Murdoch. Cade then whipped Wayne to the ropes and propped him up with a reverse atomic drop, while Murdoch charged the ropes and rebounded off with a big boot to Wayne's face.

After taunting Wayne for a bit, Murdoch threw Wayne over to his corner so that Escobar could tag in. Escobar caught Murdoch with a couple quick punches as he climbed into the ring, but Murdoch knocked him down quick with a right hand of his own. A whip to the ropes and a back elbow later, Murdoch tagged out to Cade. Murdoch hit a jawbreaker on Escobar before rolling out to his corner, followed up by Cade hitting a neckbreaker on their opponent. After a couple of elbow drops, Cade picked up Escobar and threw him into the corner where Murdoch was waiting to tag back in.

Once in, Murdoch whipped Cade into Escobar who got a forearm shot to the head for his troubles, after which Murdoch took Escobar down with a modified backdrop. Murdoch dropped an elbow of his own and then went for the cover, but only got a two-count. Murdoch tagged out to Cade once more, who delivered a big chop to Escobar once he was back in the ring. Escobar tried to rally back, but Cade stopped that with a fast series of forearm shots to his back.

After admonishing the ref, Cade tagged in Murdoch who kept the assault going with a big right hand to the gut and then a kick to the head. Escobar tried to come back again, blocking two charges into the corner by Murdoch, but when he rushed out of the corner, Murdoch took him down with a big clothesline. Cade tagged in and took Escobar down with a Jackhammer suplex, but couldn't get the pin on account of Wayne charging in. As soon as Murdoch neutralized Wayne to the outside, Cade and Murdoch finished off Escobar with their patented charging clothesline/charging knee clip combo to get the win.

Winners: Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch

Segment #3: Hulk Hogan/Randy Orton Hype for SummerSlam

You all know the story. Legend vs. Legend Killer, yadda yadda yadda. SummerSlam... only on PPV.

Heat Main Event: Val Venis vs. Shelton Benjamin

Not only is Shelton not working SummerSlam, but he's relegated to Heat this week. Wow.

After Val threw his towel to a surprisingly excited male fan, the two Superstars locked up. After some jockeying for position, Shelton got into the ropes and called for a break. Another collar-and-elbow, this time with Val locking in a headlock, which Shelton shoved out of only to get a shoulder tackle for his trouble. Val hit the ropes, with Shelton leapfrogging and hitting the ropes himself, knocking down Val with a shoulder tackle of his own. Shelton ran the ropes again, but Val caught him this time with a hip toss. Shelton got up and took a charging Val down with an arm drag, to which Val got up and returned the favor with an arm drag of his own. Shelton leg tripped Val and went for a quick one-count cover, then Val did the same and got a quick one-count as well. Both men get up to a stand-off and a small ovation from the crowd.

After sarcastically applauding Val, Shelton offered a handshake, but Val ended up getting slapped in the face when he went to shake Shelton's hand. Val reversed an Irish whip attempt afterwards and started his knee lift to the guts combo, but Shelton blocked the Russian legsweep attempt and shoved Val to the ropes. Val ducked the clothesline and finally hit the Russian legsweep. After a few mounted punches, Val argued with the ref while Shelton ducked out to the apron. Val tried to slam Shelton's head on the outside of the turnbuckle, but Shelton blocked it and slammed Val's arm into the turnbuckle and then wrenched the arm into the ring post.

Seizing opportunity, Shelton kept working on the arm, sending Val shoulder first into the turnbuckle once more. He applied a quick hammerlock and threw Val into another turnbuckle for good measure. Shelton then took Val down with an arm drag and locked in an armbar. Shelton transferred the hold into a keylock armbar, but Val started to rally back. After fighting back with a few punches, Val went for an Irish whip, but Shelton hung onto the top rope forcing Val to jerk his shoulder and wince in pain. Shelton followed up with an armbreaker ddt and got a two-count.

Shelton then went back to the keylock armbar, periodically getting a two-count as he worked his leverage. Val fought out of it though and took Shelton down with a swinging neckbreaker. Even with one useful arm, Val punches away and even took Shelton down with a clothesline and a back elbow. Shelton reversed an Irish whip attempt, however, and locked in a sleeper. Val quickly reversed out of it and put Shelton down with a swing-out powerbomb, which got him a close two-count.

Retreating to the corner, Shelton took Val down with a leg sweep and went for the pin, putting his legs on the ropes for leverage, but the referee saw it and wouldn't make the count. Shelton then went for a short-arm clothesline, but Val reversed it into a half-nelson slam, then signaled for the Money Shot. As he climbed the ropes, Shelton sprung to his feet and leaped to the top rope. Val punched him away though, sending him crashing back down to the mat. With a prone Shelton on the mat below, Val then hit the Money Shot, but rolled off in agony from his injured arm unable to make the cover right away. By the time he made the cover, Shelton was able to kick out.

As Val tried to pick Shelton up off the mat, Shelton suddenly grabbed Val and hit him with the T-Bone and got the quick victory.

    Winner: Shelton Benjamin
