Ridin’ With The Bossman – Big Batista’s Comeback

Wevv: Hey Naitch! How did Raw end last week?

    My Buddy Naitch: Edge won.

Wevv: Did he pin RVD? I think he pinned Cena, cuz I remember RVD on the outside of the ring.

Naitch: I’m pretty sure he pinned RVD.

Wevv: Nah, it must have been Cena. I’ll go with that.

Read your column RWTB tonight, good stuff, but there was one problem....................On your review of Raw, you said Edge pinned Cena so RVD lost the belt without being pinned, when actually RVD got the F-U and Edge pinned RVD after hitting Cena with the belt.

    - Dave

Good column except for one error on your behalf - RVD was pinned by Edge after John Cena FU'd him and Edge hit John Cena with the belt.

You're right that Vince has got to get revenge on DX to make it a legitimate feud instead of an ambush.

    Enjoyed the column!

    - David

I'm not usually prone to flames and this isn't really a flame, but I want to inform you of an obvious mistake in your column where you state that pot was not listed in the WWE's Wellness Program. Follow this link and go to subsection 7 where it states:

"(7) Illegal drugs. The possession, use, and/or distribution of any drug made illegal to possess, use and/or distribute by the laws of the United States of America and/or any of its fifty states is prohibited by this Policy."

Last time I checked, pot is an illegal drug and therefore is apart of the Wellness program unless RVD somehow has a prescription to smoke it. I just thought that you might like to know about this for your information.

Also, I would like to also say that once RVD's suspension is over, I am 95% certain he will almost immediately be given the title again as right now he is the only thing ECW had going for it, which isn't really saying much in my opinion....

Anyway, those are my two cents.

    -Lexster

RVD most certainly DID get pinned by Edge in that triple threat match.
Cena hit RVD with the FU, Edge smacked Cena with the belt and covered RVD
    for the pin.

    - Burt

Greetings! Welcome to another edition of Ridin’ With The Bossman! The column that isn't afraid to admit to mistakes and fess up. Oh, I could have just gone WWE on you, and pretend it never happened, but why not show that you readers keep me honest. Like with the Wellness program, where Marijuana was prohibited, but not tested for. So, thanks for the info, and keep those emails coming. And please, label them feedback. I get tons of spam, and it might get missed if you don't. However, if you want to know about great deals on mortgage rates, investment opportunities in Tunisia, or penis enlargement pills, I can forward them on to you. Oh, yeah, and offers for the Dangerous Women of Wrestling videotapes. Top those Indy feds, send me a DVD. I like free stuff, and I’ll review it.

So, what a week of wrestling eh? 7 hours of WWE programming. Undertaker shows up on TV, which can only mean he has a PPV payday coming up, and by golly, there’s one next week. Hogan came back to TV. Divas Search, and so much more. There was also some fuss down in TNA over Rhino saying he had the ECW belt, and some other stuff. I got it on tape. I only watched the first ten minutes. If there’s time, I’ll get to it. But first things first.

    WWE TV – The Series

    Raw

    Recap courtesy of Chad Matthews

Congrats Chad! You are now the officially Hardest Working Man in Recapping.

Edge, Cena, Lita, and Hotel Rooms

Edge came out first on the show, and revealed his own announce booth for a match of Cena vs Benjamin. Good match, and when Cena won, Cena went after Edge, which is a switch. Usually the heel goes after the face. Lita

    Trish

Man, they are really just forcing Trish out aren't they? For the past year, she’s had barely any mic time, she’s worked to put over all the new talent, and once word gets back that she may, I repeat, MAY not sign her contract, she’s back to being a doormat. Good luck Trish. I know you can succeed outside of wrestling.

Ric, Foley, Big Show, and Heyman

Ric came out and called out Foley. Foley responded with one of his greatest promos. Just awesome work. SO good in fact, that when it was over, Flair was stunned, and realized that he couldn't follow that. So, he went to his scripted lines, which were lame, and probably thanked God, that Big Show and Paul Heyman came out. Show challenged Flair, Flair accepted, and we have Ric Flair vs Big Show tomorrow night on ECW TV, something I never thought I’d see.

    Divas Search

Well, those chicks are hot. And I could hear Vince screaming as the Miz totally fucked up. Just totally. I’m surprised Vince didn't just go out there and kick his ass. Coach was probably laughing his ass off. Not matter how you cut it, five minutes of those chicks talking is just not good. Some showed a lot of promise. Jen, Milena, and Layla stood out. At least to me. One chick I barely understood a word she said. But yeah, too much time, but better to let them get that out of the way. The Boot Camp was way better.

    DX Hijinks

So, anyway, it was pretty lame. Eugene got stuff dumped on him, and abused, and I never understood whether he was supposed to be on the McMahon’s team or not, and what exactly the deal was. He was just there to be abused, instead of DX, I got that, but I’m not sure what the angle was. Anyhoo, it was apparently a trap, and a damn lame one, since H didn't even have to see it, he just knew. And then Eugene pinned a McMahon and that was it. YAY! Way to go, WWE! I didn't think you could make this angle any lamer, and you proved me wrong. Oh, and one final note. I finally got a good look at the new DX shirts. Totally gay. Totally.

So, that was Raw. A lot of character development, as they think about the big plans for SummerSlam. Like turning Haas and Viscera into the newest tag team of Creepy Chocolate, finding something for Benjamin to do, and thinking up ways to bring back Umaga. And showing the perils of the road. Did you see Edge just DOWN that mimosa? Oh, and one last thing. 868 consecutive episodes of Raw. In a row. Non-stop. That is impressive as hell.

    ECW

    Recap courtesy of Chad Matthews

The show opens with a long speech by Paul. I have to admit, I spaced out for most of it. Something about how he’s God and the fans are to blame. What did I think of while this was going on? I’ll tell you.

    A Sci-Fi original movie starring……THE ZOMBIE!

No kidding, I think it would be a hoot. Give me a million dollar budget and pay me $50 grand, and I’ll give you a comedy, with Big Show, Kurt Angle, some chicks, and the Zombie. Hey, it can't be any worse than Slayer.

    Tommy Dreamer, Test, and Pushes

You know, I was afraid that they would push Tommy as the new face of ECW. The guy just has no charisma. Well, one way to fix that is to put him with a bigger black hole of charisma, and that man is Test.

    Kelly and Candice

Kelly has no idea how to dance. But Candice, man, that chick has a real future in stripping, and I’m talking about big bucks. That chick is just sexy. And this show was mighty fine. Thank you Sandman for beating the crap out of Knoxx. You're my new hero.

    CM Punk speaks!

And I missed it. Damn. I’ll have to check the tape. Unless they have it up on ECW.com. Let me check. And yes, there it is! HOORAY ECW! And I am so looking forward to that promo on Raw, with Maria, where he says, “ I AM CM PUNK! You see this bitch right here? Last night she was tossing my salad! STRAIGHT EDGE BITCHES!”

    Sabu vs Justin Credible

Both guys looked good, in the short time they were given. The ending sucked ass, as Sabu got DQ’d. On ECW TV.

    Big Show vs Ric Flair

I liked it. Brutal, and that was before the weapons. I find it odd that Flair would get them, but then again, Show was kicking his ass. Once the weapons came into play, it got sloppy. Thumbtacks, and the finish saw Show use his new move, and throw Ric into the thumbtacks. Nasty move, as Flair SLID into the tacks. Good match, and I gotta give credit to Flair for being a mad dog.

    Smackdown

    King Booker

I get tired of Regal shouting “All Hail King Booker”, but Booker just does that false modesty so well. A truly talented man. I also get tired of JBL, but that’s another story. Apparently, while Batista was beating the hell out of Mark Henry, Booker jumped Rey when he got hurt, and was carried to the back, after being rescued by Batista. Rey gets payback, by sneaking up on Booker and landing a move, and then, it’s only taken them six months to figure it out, Rey stands in the ring, while Booker runs away. Write this down and mark it on your calendar, for once, Rey looked strong, and wasn’t buried. And you can thank Booker for that.

    Matt Hardy wins.

    It’s a night of miracles!

    Michelle and Krystal act bitchy.

I still say Ashley looks nothing like she did when she won the Divas Search contest. Krystal and Michelle? Gold.

    Undertaker shows up on TV!!!

It truly is a night of miracles! OK stat boys, I have a favor to ask. How many times has Undertaker been on TV this year? Not video clips, actually in the ring. A separate stat for matches would be appreciated. Because it’s time for more fun with math.

    Contract Signing!

You know these are always jam-packed full of excitement and high drama, as that pen could turn into a deadly weapon at any second! No, and at least Teddy said that no one was going to get physical. I will say this though. Mark Henry just SMOKED Batista with his promo. More on that later.

    Lashley vs Finlay

Great match. Great action, great pacing, and some nice twists with Fit Minlay (The leprechaun). Finlay wins the belt, which was a surprise.

    Divas Search Boot Camp Contest

I must say, I loved this. Those chicks have all got some athletic ability. Granted, the tasks weren’t hard, but they all got within the same time. And third time around, casting agents have a clue about what WWE is looking for. Blondes with Big Tits? Yeah, we gotta couple of those, and then we have some really hot chicks. I’ll do my annual Divas Search Analysis next week. But I will say that I’m rooting for Jen (I do love blatant plugs, and the sash was a nice touch), Leyla, and Milena.

    Booker vs Rey

Good match, with loads of outside hijinks. Some good wrestling from Regal and Rey. Rey of course wins, and then gets to do a 619, from the ring, on the ring post on Booker, who was outside, walking on the mat. Nice move. And once again, Rey looked strong.

Truly a show of miracles! Rey wasn’t buried, Matt Hardy wins, Hot Chicks galore! And Mark Henry was the better man. Oh, and Undertaker showed up.

We still have one show to go!

    Saturday Night’s Main Event

    Recap courtesy of Boss Foxx

    We start things out Hogan

And Hogan brings out his daughter Brooke. Oh, and in her video, she’s working with Paul Wall. That may be a name you recognize, and it may not. Paul is a rapper, and a businessman. Information can be found about him here:

    Paul Wall – Wikenpedia

The only thing you really need to know about him is that his first solo release was called “The People’s Champ”. Coincidence? Probably not.

So, Brooke comes out and does the talking. With Hogan showing her the ropes. That girl has a good career ahead of her. Seriously. Working a crowd is one of the most important things an entertainer can do. But that’s for OAW. Orton comes out, and challenge Hulk in a respectful manner. Hogan accepts. Randy will be jobbing in no-time.

Batista, Rey, and Bobby Lashley vs Mark Henry, Booker T, and Fit Finlay

Mark Henry blew out his patella tendon and broke his patella. That’s a huge blow, Poor Mark. Man, I was rooting for you. So, the match gets shortened drastically, and it’s Rey and Batista who set up the pin.

DX, Vince, and the Spirit Squad

DX does a voice over while Vince talks to the Spirit Squad. Basically, it’s Vince saying he’d like to hammer the Spirit Squad, and get a spanking. While Spirit Squad says they’re going to get beaten silly, since it’s not only five on two, but they’re also the Tag Team Champions. Amusing, but sad at the same time. Since it all seemed true.

Highlights of the Diva’s Bull Riding contest

Would have been nice to actually see some of it, but hey, DX and Vince need that time.

Trish and Carlito vs Melina and Nitro

One of the shortest matches ever. Seriously, it was like a minute long. Carlito was just getting warmed up, when Trish got the signal, ran in, attacked Melina, who apparently missed the signal, and then the pin came out of the blue, and the match was over. Just ridiculous.

    DX vs Spirit Squad

Well, this match got some time. A lot of time. Vince came out and hit HBK with a chair. But then, of course, DX just beat the crap out of everyone. There were cages at ringside, though I don't think they had anything to do with the match. Maybe it was just to fuck with TNA. King of the Mountain set up, or something like that. Anyone else think that H was scared up on top of that cage?

    Big Show, Khali, and Undertaker

Big Show faces off against Khali, and say they might have to find out who the best big man is. Undertaker shows up. Holy Crap! Twice is one week! Show and Khali put him down with a double choke slam.

    Sabu vs Stevie Richards

Really short match, but a fast paced exciting one. Good stuff. Sabu wins of course.

    Orton Attacks!

Randy hits an RKO on a standing Hogan on the trunk of his car. Nice move, really nice.

    Cena vs Edge

Oh, Edge won, but by DQ. So, Cena grabs him and gives him an FU, off the ring steps, through the announce table. Really nice move.

Well, another show long of hype, and short on wrestling, Less angle crap, and more video packages. Basically, it’s like a two-hour Heat. And this time, there was some actual hype for the Smackdown PPV, which is next week. Amazing, I know. But there it was.

All in all, DX got some new material, just in the nick of time. The Smackdown main event push for Batista now has to be rethought, and while it may seem like a good idea to have Batista work a program with Fit, to shake off the ring rust, they shot themselves in the foot by having Fit win the US title. They have one week to figure it out. I’d say put the belt on Matt Hardy, the US title that is. Either that, or move Kane over to Smackdown. Whatever happens, I just hope everything isn't sacrificed for Batista. Because there is an attitude going around that I disagree with.

I understand the dislike of Mark Henry. My readers, and folks on the LOP message boards have been kind enough to indulge my Mark Henry Fandom. And if Mark does get cut over this, which is all too likely, I would understand. This was a contract year for Mark, and his track record, barring these past few months, has not been good. Four to six months is a long time. And an injury like that may make a lasting impression on his physical being. Knees are tricky things.

But there’s one thing that bugs me about this. See, there’s a guy who has been more injury prone that Mark, and had more riding on him than. And that man’s name is Batista. He’s had three muscle tears in about as many years. More effort was put into Batista’s push than I can recall in recent years. Hell, H jobbed to him three times in a row. Back when jobs and H were about as frequent as blue moons. H put him over, big time. WWE took that and made it into something grand. The investment paid off. Batista still has weaknesses. Like being given way too much mic time. He held the title and had to give it up. Because he was injured. And it left a huge void. Which Mark helped fill.

Now, if the same effort was put into Mark, would it be the same? No. I like Mark, but I’m not delusional. Mark has found his niche, and it’s similar to Kane. Part of the reason I like him. Mark’s job is, well, was, to be the credible threat. The monster. The guy would gets more wins than loses, and does the big job when it’s time for some one to move up the ranks, or look like a true star. An opponent who people aren't sure who’s going to win, and when he does, they may not like it (because it’s Mark Henry), but they at least can grasp why it happened.

One last thing. How impressive does Batista look when Bobby Lashley, who I think is actually bigger and at least ten years younger, and more athletic, is standing next to him? How long until the fans realize that?

So, get well soon Mark, and I for one, wish you a speedy recovery. Thank you for these past few months of work, and I think you can look back on it and be proud. I’ve appreciated everything you’ve done, and I’ll say you’ve done it well. Best of luck, and may your sandwiches be footlongs, and always toasted.

    Over-Analyzing Wrestling

    Today’s Topic: The Hogan Effect

Hulk Hogan has returned to the WWE. Hogan, the man the net loves to hate. The man who has been on top for over twenty years. Twenty years. And the crowd still loves him. Many have called for Hogan to pass the torch. But the fact is, I don't think the torch can be passed. It’s in the name, and it’s been ingrained into every wrestling fan. Hogan is the man. He truly is a legend. Ric may be the best wrestler of all time. Austin may have made the most money during his stint in WWE. Rock may be as big a name, at least to modern fans. But no one has done what Hogan has done.

    No one.

Let’s take a quick look at Hogan’s accomplishments.

Not one, but two TV shows. His current one, Hogan Knows Best has been picked up for another season. Is it a top ten ratings show? No, but it draws enough that VH1 is willing to renew it.

Hogan has made movies. Lots of movies. Have they been any good? No, but can you name at least two? Yes, you can. Which says that you watched them, or know of them. He hasn't made a new movie in about a decade, but you still know his movies.

Hogan knows wrestling and how to work it, better than anyone. Even Vince. See, Hogan has learned, where Vince just stubbornly goes on ahead. Hogan knows that less is more.

If you ask anyone, anyone, to name three wrestlers, I can almost guarantee that one of those names would be Hogan.

And Hogan knows how to do one thing better than anyone, and that’s get paid. And get those who work with him paid too. But let’s clear something up now.

Last year, Hogan worked with HBK. HBK got most of the time, and got to cut some of the best promos I’ve ever heard from him. HBK worked his ass off for Hogan. Hogan won the match, and when it came time to talk about a rematch, Hogan said he wouldn't job. HBK had a hissy fit. That’s exactly what it was. HBK’s pride got hurt. All kinds of stuff about Hogan’s ego came out. Flash forward to one year later, and while his ego may be intact, he’s had a lot more attacks on his beliefs than Hogan ever did. So, two jobs vs being a hypocrite? Yep, HBK could have been working another main event at SummerSlam, where HBK would have gotten the majority of mic time, and more than likely would have had to do the majority of the work, but you know what? He would have been really over. Not playing H’s sidekick.

If it sounds like I admire the Hulkster, I do. I may not like his methods, but I admire his longevity. Ric Flair has stayed a name by working his ass off. He could sit back and rest on his laurels, and do just fine. Hulkster has stayed in the public’s mind by using his fame in the most skillful manner possible.

The thing that burns me most about the dislike and criticism of Hogan is that no one seems to mind that Taker does almost the exact same thing.

One last Hogan thought, and then it’s time to call it a day.

Lillian Garcia has been having some trouble backstage. Now, Lillian is a mainstay of Raw, but that’s never stopped WWE from replacing some one on a whim. What exactly does Lillian do? Sing the national anthem, and introduce the matches. She’s earned a lot of publicity from that post.

Brooke Hogan is a singer. Brooke Hogan is young. If Lillian is having some trouble with management, how likely is it that Lillian might just be cut, and replaced with Brooke? Who would then get additional national exposure to some of the most loyal fans in the world?

Yep, Hogan is one devious son of a bitch, but one thing to remember, Hogan gets paid, and he hasn't stayed on top by being stupid about the business.

That’s it for today. Quick Plugs, One newsbit, and that’s a wrap.

Brock Lesnar and New Japan have a falling out

This is huge news. Really huge. That means that Brock Lesnar is back on the market. And if TNA had any brains, they’d be sending him an offer. Adding Brock Lesnar would mean a hell of a lot more than bringing in Jim Cornette. Seriously. Cornette can talk, true, but that can only take you so far, especially when it’s only an hour long show. His booking ideas are old fashioned, and that has it’s plusses and minuses. And we’ve already seen how he’s just a prop to keep Jarrett in power. Brock Lesnar on the other hand is a name as well. Him showing up in TNA would mean big things. Like Spike TV backing big. Like maybe enough to bring in Goldberg Big. Like jump-starting the promotion onto the national awareness. Right up until they all job to Jarrett, but it would create a stir.

At the least, it’s worth looking into TNA.
