WWE Saturday Night's Main Event 7-15-06 Recap by Boss Foxx, LOPforums.com
Show opens up in Dallas with a seemingly sold-out arena and an impressive stage and ringside setup (white ring ropes with red ring posts is a nice touch). Big pyro setup to kick it all off and JR with Michael Cole waste no time in breaking down what's to take place this evening.
First up is none other than Hulk Hogan and his daughter, Brooke, stepping out to "Real American". Dallas pops huge, as the duo make their way to the ring. After basking in the crowd's cheers for a moment, Hulkster passing the mic to Brooke who thanks the crowd for the dream come true of standing in a WWE ring with her rather infront of all his Hulkamaniacs. Before Hulk, himself, can really get going on the mic though, Randy Orton's music starts up and the "Legend Killer" gingerly steps down he aisle with a red rose in hand.
While Brooke puts on an interested face when she sees Randy, Hulk stands between her and Randy while Randy "respectfully" challenges the Hulkster to a match at SummerSlam. After looking to the crowd for a approval, Hogan accepts the challenge after Orton hands the rose off to Brooke. And with that, the music starts up again and the segment is over quicker than it started.

William Regal is in the ring and announces King Booker and Queen Sharmell. Finlay comes out next with his shiny new US title, followed by Mark Henry. After that, we get the entrance of Bobby Lashley who is quickly upstaged by Batista's entrance that gets a huge pop from the crowd. Then we have the World Champion's entrance and we're all set for a six-man tag match.
Match #1: Batista, Bobby Lashley, & Rey Mysterio vs. Mark Henry, Finlay, & King Booker w/ William Regal & Queen Sharmell
Finlay and Lashley square off to start the match, with Lashley going on a quick attack in the neutral corner. After a belly to belly by Lashley on the Irish brawler, all six man end up in a stand-off as the show goes to break.

Finlay is in the ring working on Mysterio, coming back from break, with Finlay hammering away on the champion and locking in a sitting headlock. Rey battles back a couple times and hits a springboard moonsault off the top rope for a quick two-count. Then while Booker and Henry distract Batista and Lashley, Finlay takes down Rey once more and employs the services of his Leprechaun again, who quickly grabs the shillelagh and wails away on Rey, as Finlay holds Rey's legs.
After the ref has order restored, Finlay hits a sitting splash but only gets a two-count. Booker tags in and stomps away on Rey, and then tags in Mark Henry. Before Henry can dominate the little guy though, Rey kicks away at Henry's legs and appears to do some legitimate damage, as Henry drops suddenly to the mat. Rey tags out to Batista, while Henry tries desperately to tag out to Finlay. Henry is having trouble though, so Booker runs into the ring and grabs Rey, dragging him back towards their corner, all while the referee stops Batista from getting at Henry due to not seeing the tag from Rey.
Finlay tags in while Henry rolls to the outside, as the referee (Neil Patrick) signals that there's been an injury with the ol' overhead x-signal. Booker tags in and goes to work on Mysterio now, but Rey comes back with a surprise hurricanrana reversal. Finlay and Booker try to keep Rey from getting to his corner, but the little luchadore keeps ducking under their legs until finally tagging in Batista. The Animal cleans house and puts Booker down with a spinebuster, while Lashley attacks Finlay on the outside. Batista signals for the end, but not before Rey runs back in and hits the 619 on Booker, followed by the Batista Bomb and the three-count.
Winners – Batista, Lashley, and Rey Mysterio
The three men celebrate in the ring while there are no camera shots or mention of Mark Henry.
Cameras cut back to Vince McMahon and the Spirit Squad in his office while they go over their game plan. After making clear that there will be two cages at ringside for the losers of the elimination match to be trapped in, D-X appear on side-screen and proceed to do some juvenile commentary of what Vince and the Squad are saying, while Vince and Co. are muted. Once they've had their fun, the sound returns to Vince's side of the camera and we're off to commercial, as Vince states that he'll never be embarrassed by D-X again.

We get to see the highlights of the Diva Bull-riding Contest, which was mercifully done before the show went to air. Clips are shown of all the girls getting their chance at riding the mechanical bull, and it's announced that Michelle McCool and Victoria will face off later in the finals.
Melina and Nitro make their entrance to the ring. Melina looks particularly gorgeous as she does her splits entrance. Trish then makes her entrance, followed by Carlito to get this mixed tag match under way.
Match #2: Trish Stratus & Carlito vs. Melina & Johnny Nitro
The match starts off with the guys, but Nitro stalls and ceremoniously tags in Melina while Carlito goes over and tags in Trish. The two Divas break into a brawl around the ring until Nitro trips up Trish as she hits the ropes. Melina follows up with a thumb to the eye, but Trish comes back and corners her and hits a big chop. The two women then neutralize eachother with a double hair-pull faceplant.
The guys tag back in and Carlito hits a big dropkick and then a big ocean cyclone suplex. The women start to brawl once more and roll to the outside. Carlito, distracted, watches the two women tear into eachother. Nitro seizes the opportunity to go for an inverted ddt, it seems, but Carlito reverses out of it and hits the Back Cracker and gets the quick win.
Winners – Carlito and Trish Stratus
After Trish and Carlito celebrate, we see the two isolation cages being lowered to ringside and are told that the elimination tag match is next.

After coming back from break, JR and King cut to a video flashback to earlier in the night when Kevin Von Erich was acknowledged by WWE for an appearance.
D-X make their entrance to the ring, as the crowd incessantly cheers on. After the D-X pyro and obligatory "If you're not down with that" promo, the Spirit Squad come down to the ring and egg on their two opponents.
Match #3: Elimination Tag-Team Handicap Match – D-Generation-X vs. The Spirit Squad
Mikey and HBK start things off, and Shawn is quickly cornered. Shawn rallies back though and uses the Spirit Squad megaphone to take out all five cheerleaders. While the five of them regroup, HHH grabbed the foghorn and blasts in right in the middle of their huddle. As HBK laughs it off inside the ring, Mitch sneaks back in and goes for a clothesline. HBK ducks it though and hits Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere and gets the pin and the first elimination of the night, as we cut to a break.

We come back to the show just in time to see three of the Squad members in a compromising position thanks to HHH and HBK. Triple H then grabs Johnny from the homo-erotic pile and hits a spinebuster and gets the second pin of the match, forcing Johnny to join Mitch in their isolation chamber.
With a 3-on-2 situation now, we get HBK taking on Kenny now. After Kenny takes a flurry of offense from Michaels, he ducks out and retreats up the aisle. Before Kenny can get backstage though, HBK catches up and hammers away at him. Out of nowhere, however, Vince McMahon nails Michaels in the back with a steel chair, allowing Kenny to take control and get Michaels back in the ring.
Nicky tags in and slaps on a sleeperhold, but HBK suplexes out of it. Kenny tags in and tries for a top-rope leg drop and misses. Triple H tags in and goes to work on all three remaining Squad members, as Vince takes his position at ringside. HHH goes for a Pedigree on Nicky, but Mikey breaks it up, allowing the two cheerleaders to whip Hunter to the ropes and go for a double-team move. HHH ducks the clothesline attempt and hits a double clothesline himself. Nicky tries for another clothesline, but Hunter ducks it again and hits the Pedigree this time and gets another pin, making it an even 2-on-2 contest.
That's short-lived though, as Mikey goes to work on Hunter only to be taken out with a surprise super-kick from HBK, allowing HHH to get yet another pinfall. Vince looks shocked, as Kenny is the last member of the Squad to go against both members of D-X. Kenny staggers out from the neutral corner, gets body slammed by Hunter, then receives a flying elbow drop from Shawn. This leads to Sweet Chin Music and immediately followed by a Pedigree. One more pinfall and D-X win the match in a clean sweep.
Winners – Shawn Michaels and Triple H
Vince tries to unlock the other four members of the Squad from the cage, but after opening the door the cheerleaders refuse to come out and point behind Vince. Vince turns around and gets a super-kick from Shawn and falls back into the cage on top of the Spirit Squad. After the door is closed and locked again, HBK and HHH scales the cage and celebrate the victory and taunt the men inside.

We get a Sabu vignette and then cameras cut to the ring where Daivari and the Great Khali are standing defiantly. Daivari verbally taunts the Undertaker while Khali looks scary. Then as Daivari starts hailing Khali as the biggest and toughest giant in WWE, the Big Show's music hits. The ECW Champion marches to the ring with Paul Heyman in tow. Once in the ring, Big Show measures up Khali but doesn't attack. The two men appear to show a mutual respect for one another, as Big Show takes the mic.
Big Show puts over Khali for dominating the Undertaker, and also warns that sooner or later the two giants will have to face off. Suddenly, the Undertaker's music hits and the Phenom comes down to the ring as the crowd goes wild.
After a brief staredown, Undertaker goes to work on Khali and clotheslines him over the top rope to the outside. Big Show begs off when Taker turns his way, but when Taker goes to attack Khali some more, Big Show attacks. Undertaker fights back though and slaps on a chokehold for the chokeslam. Khali comes back in the ring, but Undertaker grabs him by the throat as well. Then the two giants grab the Phenom by the throat and end up chokeslamming the Dead Man to the canvas, celebrating their dominance afterwards, as Undertaker lays motionless on the canvas.

Backstage, Heyman and Big Show are walking out of the arena when Todd Grisham approaches them about what just happened in the ring. Big Show challenges the Undertaker to a match on ECW on Sci Fi and says that Khali can have what's left at the Great American Bash.
Back to the ring, Sabu makes his entrance as Stevie Richards is waiting in the ring.
Match #4: Extreme Rules Match – Sabu vs. Stevie Richards
Stevie ducks out of the ropes to keep away from Sabu at the start of the match, but that only serves to irritate Sabu who grabs a chair and hurls it at his opponent. Then Sabu sets up the chair and hits a vaulting leg press in the corner. With Stevie down in the middle of the ring, Sabu sets up the chair again and hits the triple-jump springboard moonsault. Sabu only gets a two-count, however, so he goes to the outside and brings a table into the ring. After setting Stevie up on the table, he tries to pull the table closer to the center of the ring causing it to collapse on one-side. Not to be deterred, Sabu still scales the ropes and leaps off with chair in hand to slam Stevie in the head with the chair. This does enough damage for Sabu to get the pinfall victory.
Winner – Sabu
Not satisfied, Sabu finishes off Stevie with a standing Arabian Facebuster and then pulls out his spike and chases off the referee.
We then are blessed with a snippet of Brooke Hogan's debut music video. Yay. It ends midway through, thankfully, to show up Brooke chatting it up in the parking garage with Randy Orton. Hulkster slaps Orton on the back and tells him to beat it and helps Brooke into their car. Before Hogan can get around his the driver's side, though, Orton comes back out of nowhere and RKO's the Hulkster right on the truck of the car. As Brooke rushes to the aid of her father, Orton smugly walks off.

We get to see a replay of the RKO on Hogan before going back to ringside.
Todd Grisham introduces for the finals of the Diva Bull Riding Contest. Michelle McCool comes out first, ruler and all, and lasts all of 12 seconds on the mechanical bull. Victoria comes out next with her cute pink stirrups, but after readying herself on the bull she only lasts about 8 seconds before getting bucked off. Michelle McCool is your winner, causing Victoria to snap and go on a tantrum, even snapping Michelle's ruler in two.
Hyping the main event, we get a video recap of the John Cena/Edge feud ranging over the past few weeks. We then see Edge and Lita walking backstage, as they prepare for Edge's title defense.
[commercial]
John Cena comes out first to an impressive pop from the crowd – not as impressive as the pops for Hogan or Batista, but it's respectable. Then we have Edge and Lita make their way to the ring. Once both men are in the ring, the match is announced by that kid that does the announcing for ECW (can't remember his name). The bell rings and the match is on.
Main Event: WWE Title Match – John Cena vs. (c)Edge
Edge ducks out to ringside before they can lock up, with Cena following after him where the brawl gets started. Back in the ring, Edge hangs on the ropes and Cena charges at him, only to have Edge drop to the mat and force Cena over the top rope and down to the floor below.
[commercial]
The match is in full swing, as Edge takes down Cena with a running clothesline. Edge then sets up Cena on the top turnbuckle and goes for a superplex. Edge somehow slips and takes an ugly bump, but still manages to suplex Cena clean to the mat below. The two regroup and brawl once again.
Lita distracts Cena long enough for Edge to hit a clothesline and then a big boot, but only gets a two-count when he goes for the pinfall. More fists start flying, to which the crowd cheers each punch Edge throws and boos each punch Cena throws. Cena then starts hitting his "five moves of doom" - flying shoulder tackle, Protoslam, Five Knuckle Shuffle, F-U. When Cena goes for the cover though, Lita drags the referee out of the ring by his feet before he can count to three.
Cena berates Lita long enough for Edge to charge in for a Spear, but Cena dodges it and locks in the STFU. The referee tries to get back in the ring to call for the submission, but Lita slaps the taste out of his mouth. The referee calls for the bell, as he climbs back in the ring. Cena celebrates, thinking he's won the belt, but when the announcer says the win is via DQ he realizes what has happened.
Winner via DQ - John Cena; Still Champion - Edge
Cena then goes berserk and hammers away on Edge at ringside. He then clears the Raw announce table and signals for another F-U, but decides not to. Then while he has Edge still in the fireman's carry, he scales the ring steps and then leaps off with a huge F-U from the top of the steps to the table below, sending Edge crashing through the table to the floor to end the show.
END OF SHOW
All in all, I thought this was a much more entertaining show than the SNME that we got back in the spring. The crowd was hot and the booking for the night kept up a good enough pace to keep the crowd from burning out. The Hogan segment was a lot shorter than I expected it to be, but with time constraints as they were, I can't complain. It probably saved us from some horrific mic skills on Brooke's part. There's a few other thoughts on the show that I'd like to share as well.
Mark Henry is officially a bust. He's been injury prone before, and with word that he's now out for 4-6 months, he is completely washed out as an investment for Vince. There's no way, as I see it, that WWE can depend upon this guy for any kind of long term capacity since he gets injured every single year he is working for them. Frankly, I'm surprised he went this long without putting himself on the disabled list. So, God only knows where this leaves Batista's return match at the Great American Bash. I suppose William Regal or Kennedy will get thrown to the wolves when that night rolls around.
Lastly, Edge as WWE Champion is money. That's all there is to it. Even though he's basically been feuding with John Cena since the end of last year, it's not even close to being stale for me, as I would gladly watch this feud into SummerSlam and possibly into Unforgiven. WWE can Cena "controversial" all they want, but he's a Disney flick compared to the raw potential they have with Edge as their flag bearer. Then again, maybe I'm just biased as a Canadian.
