The ECW TV Report (07/11/06): Big Show vs. Ric Flair for the ECW title

The ECW Report (07/11/06)

A video recap aired of the ECW title match and the events leading up to it.

The show kicked off with Paul Heyman coming to the ring, accompanied by a couple of shield-wielding police officers. Heyman got booed pretty heavily as he began to speak. He said that last week, he made sure that RVD lost the ECW title. Heyman said not to blame him, but rather to blame themselves for RVD losing the title and the reason for Heyman having to suspend RVD for 30 days. He said the people were the downfall of Rob Van Dam, whereas Heyman was trying to be the voice of reason. Heyman said the people drove RVD to defend the title every night, forcing him to burn himself out. An RVD chant broke out. Heyman said those very chants drove RVD to win the ECW title, but drove Heyman to put an end to it all. He said that it is difficult for the people to grasp the idea of the sacrifices that he made to bring back ECW. According to Heyman, he is the savior and sacrificed RVD’s title reign for the sins of the people. He promised to be the messiah and make decisions that benefited ECW and nothing or no one else…and lead ECW to the promise land along the way. Forever stamped on his soul are the letters E-C-W! (CMV1 note- solid promo, but not exactly the type of interview that I had hoped for)

Backstage, Tommy Dreamer approached Heyman and asked him what he was thinking. Heyman said he’d like to explain it to him, but Dreamer has a match up next. Dreamer, standing in street clothes, looked surprised at that comment.


Match 1: Tommy Dreamer vs. Test
-They stared each other face-to-face to start it off. Test slapped Dreamer twice, prompting the Innovator of Violence to attack. Dreamer clotheslined Test over the top rope. His momentum carried himself, too. Test took control back in the ring with a splash in the corner. A Tommy Dreamer chant rang out. Test whipped him hard into the opposite turnbuckle. Test called Dreamer a loser and stomped a mudhole in him. He followed with a backbreaker and a lot of stalling. A bearhug followed, but Dreamer fought out with a rake to the eyes. Tommy used a swinging neckbreaker to finally get some momentum, and then followed with a falling neckbreaker to set up the DDT. Test countered into a full nelson slam, though. He then went to the top rope for an elbow drop, but Dreamer moved out of the way. Tommy went for the Spiccoli Driver, but Test countered and got the win with a roll-up. Test defeated Dreamer at 3:55. (CMV1 rating- * (CMV1 note- Good while it lasted, but too short. I hope they get a chance to go all-out in the near future. They don’t have to put a former WWE champion in the main-event every week. There are people out there that would like to see new talent and former ECW stars. You hearing me, Vince?!)

Backstage, Candice told Kelly that she was going to be getting extreme with her during their expose.

Backstage, Aerial the tarot card reader asked what the future held. The future apparently involves the vampire, as he came into view and spit blood on the camera.

Kelly and Candice did their expose. While they were dancing on each other, Mike Knox came out and pulled Kelly away. Sandman came out to confront Knox as the girls ran away. The Hardcore Icon whacked the crap out of Knox with several Singapore cane shots. Sandman drank a beer in celebration. (CMV1 note- see…now they need to do that more often. Set-up matches in advance so that each match of every one-hour show has a purpose. It’s not rocket science. And, yes, in case anyone was going to ask the question…I COULD BOOK THAT)

Backstage, CM Punk talked about his tattoos and their meanings…war, dedication, drug free…He put over his wrestling-first character. (CMV1 note- can’t wait to see him in the ring).


Match 2: Sabu vs. Justin Credible
-Sabu dove at Justin’s feet, but Credible moved and connected on two leg drops. Sabu came back with a boot to the face and a belly-to-belly suplex followed by a springboard leg lariat. Credible snuck away to the outside and got a table, but Sabu came out after him via a pescado. Sabu got a near fall with a rolling leg drop. Back to the outside we went, where Credible tossed Sabu back-first into the apron. The finish came when Sabu got DQ-ed for leg dropping Justin through a table. Credible won via DQ. (CMV1 rating- ½ *). (CMV1 note- that’s crap…apparently not all the ECW matches are extreme rules)

Backstage, Balls Mahoney said he was an ECW original who was always willing to go balls to the wall.

After Styles and Tazz tried to make it seem like they were excited about Flair vs. Show, Flair cut a promo backstage about how he’d face Foley in any match in any place. He also said he was gearing up to win his 17th world title at the Big Show’s expense.

Shannon Moore is coming to ECW…


Match 3: ECW Champion Big Show vs. Ric Flair (Extreme Rules)
-(CMV1 note- again, I like how they do pre-match in-ring introductions to give every title match a bigger, main-event feel). An All Hail Flair chant rang out as the match got underway. Show paced back and forth as both men looked tentative to make the first move. The champ eventually pushed Flair to the corner and gave him a chop and headbutt before stomping him out of the ring. We then got a ridiculously early mid-match commercial break, but I guess that was to be expected. Back from the break, Flair was chopping away at the champ, but Show came back with a military press slam. Show used repeated headbutts to fully regain control. Flair was busted open in the process, so Show wailed away at the wound with his huge hand. Frying pan chops in the corner followed before Flair took his signature flop drop. Show proceeded to give Flair a dose of his own medicine with a couple of knife edge chops. The champ clotheslined Flair to the outside and chatted with the ref. Meanwhile, Flair got a trash can full of goodies out from under the ring. He never got to use any of them, though, as Show came out and threw him back in the ring. The champ gave the Nature Boy a delayed vertical suplex. Flair tried to come back with right hands and chops, but Show gave him a headbutt and a powerslam. Naitch finally got some offense in with two consecutive low blows. Show tried to fight back, but Ric kicked him in the groin twice! Flair went and got the trash can full of goodies and pulled out a barbed wire bat, which he rammed straight into Show’s skull. Show got busted open as an ECW chant rang out. Flair then got a trash can and whacked Show in the head with it twice. Next, he got a stele chair and struck him twice with that. He went for the cover. 1…2…No! Show kicked out, but Flair dumped a bag of thumb tacks onto the mat. Another couple of chair shots followed as Show teetered and fell backwards into the pile of tacks! Unfortunately for Flair, this only pissed off the 500-pound champion. Show chokeslammed Flair into the tack pile and used his new cobra-clutch-back breaker combination to put Flair away. Show retained the title at 13:50. (CMV1 rating- ** ¼) (CMV1 note- It was a better match than I expected, as they actually went out and put their bodies on the line. I credit the Big Show for falling into a pile of tacks…that’s got to hurt. You have to credit Flair, as well, for having the kind of match that he’s mocked Mick Foley for making his career in).




All in all…Well, that’ll do it for me as the ECW reporter. I enjoyed tonight’s show, as the main-event was pretty good, CM Punk and Shannon Moore made appearances, and there was some decent set-up for future matches. I didn’t like that two of the matches were not “extreme” rules, though, as the WWE influence continues to turn this into just another WWE brand. However, I continue to get my wrestling fix with this show, as each week we’re getting a 13-15 minute main-event. I can’t say that about Raw and I no longer watch SD. Looking back at tonight’s show, I want to see another Test-Dreamer bout, CM Punk’s debut, and the continuation of the Heyman-Show pairing. Thus, I guess they accomplished the goal of making at least one fan want to tune in for next week…and as a result, I’ll give this show a healthy 6/10 and call it a career as ECW reporter …
