    The ECW Report (06/27/06)

    Match 1: Sabu vs. Roadkill
-Sabu dove at Kill’s feet, but missed. He then dropkicked his leg, knocking him to the mat before dropping an elbow. Sabu threw him chest-first into the turnbuckle and followed with a springboard spinning DDT. After retrieving a chair, Sabu went for the triple jump moonsault, but Roadkill tripped him and sent Sabu’s face crashing into the chair. Roadkill got a near fall and then hit an F5 into a Diamond Cutter for another near fall. Kill went to the outside to get a table, giving Sabu the time to recover and vault over the top rope with a somersault plancha. Back in the ring, Kill hit a black hole slam for a near fall. He then hit a Vader-Bomb into an elbow drop from the second rope. With Sabu down, Kill set up the table in the ring. He proceeded to set up Sabu on the table and smash him in the mid-section with a steel chair. From the second rope, Roadkill looked to splash Sabu thru the table. Sabu got up and threw the chair at him, though. He then hit a top rope hurricanrana to send Roadkill crashing to the mat. Several chair chots followed, which sent Roadkill onto the table. The finish came when Sabu hit the atomic Arabian facebuster and then locked on the Camel Clutch. Roadkill wouldn’t tap at first, but Sabu smashed his back with a few more chair shots before reapplying the hold and getting the tap out. Sabu defeated Roadkill at 5:30. (CMV1 rating- **) (CMV1 note- an exciting opener to kick of the show. This is the type of match that separates ECW and WWE…and should be highlighted every week. Both men looked good and produced an action packed bout that never slowed from the opening bell to the finish).

Tazz and Joey Styles hyped tonight’s main-event, Kurt Angle vs. RVD, and mentioned that there was something major on the line for Kurt Angle in said match.

The vampire was shown outside the arena for a third consecutive week.

In the ring, Tommy Dreamer talked about having a lot of respect for the Big Show after the beating he gave him last week. He said, “Thank you sir, may I have another.” Show came to the ring and Tommy attacked. Show connected with a few head butts and chopped him in the corner. Tommy tried to fight back, but Big Show punched the hell out of him. A body slam followed…and then another…and then another. Show proceeded to hit that Million Dollar Dream into a backbreaker that he’s been using in recent weeks before tossing Tommy aside like he was nothing. (CMV1 note- Heyman continues to book Show like he should be booked…like an unstoppable monster…it’s not rocket science, is it Vince?)

Backstage, Mike Knox (the guy who interrupted Kelly’s little performance last week) looked at Kelly’s gorgeous body and said he loved it. He said he didn’t want her to show herself off to anyone else, though. She then agreed to come to the ring with him.

Further backstage, Kurt Angle said that if he beats RVD, he’d get added to the WWE title match at Saturday Night’s Main-event. He said that since April 2nd, he’d been in agony over no longer being a champion. Failure is not an option for Angle and he won’t be happy until he gets the gold back.

Match 2: Mike Knox (w/ Kelly) vs. Danny Doring
-Kelly tried to show herself off, but Knox told her to calm down. A lock up started the match, but Knox overpowered Doring. Knox hit a nice sit-out spinebuster. Then the attention of the cameraman turned to Kelly, who tried to show herself off to a guy at ringside. Knox prevented it, but allowed Doring to attack him. The offense was short-lived, though, as Knox connected on a running big boot. The finish came when Knox got the win at 2:02 via modified roll of the dice. (CMV1 rating- ¼ *). (CMV1 note- More of an angle w/ Kelly than anything else, but what little we saw of Knox was fairly impressive. He showed intensity and some nice high impact moves). Meanwhile, Kelly headed back up to the stage she’s been dancing on the last few weeks. As we went to a commercial break, Styles said she’d be performing…next. Back from the break, Kelly started doing her expose. She danced around a lot, but took forever to take anything off. She finally took off the shirt and skirt she was wearing. She started to take off the bra, but Knox came out to ruin the fun. (CMV1 note- if anyone knows the name of this song she dances to, please email it to me…I have a reader that wanted to know it).

A hype video for Test’s debut in ECW aired. (CMV1 note- rumor has it that Heyman is high on Test, so expect him to get pushed…I have no problem with that)

Match 3: Sandman vs. Gyrating Idiot
-It was then time for the weekly Sandman squash. Some fat guy came to the ring and started dancing. I guess he was making fun of Kelly’s exhibitionist act. Luckily, it didn’t last long, as Sandman came in through the crowd and took the guy out. Unfortunately, he didn’t do it before the guy took off his rob to reveal a g-string. Sandman low-blowed the moron w/ a Singapore cane and the guy ran off. Sandman beat the guy up, but it wasn’t really a match after all. (CMV1 rating- no rating) (CMV1 note- How about next week, Sandman gets the opening match and Sabu gets the squash?).

Backstage, Heyman gave RVD a pep talk. Heyman said that the odds are already stacked against Van Dam at Saturday Night’s Main-Event, when he’ll have to face Edge and John Cena. RVD said he knew. Heyman said that if he loses to Angle tonight, the odds will be even more stacked against him at SNME. RVD said he knew. Heyman said he just wanted to make sure RVD knew what was at stake. RVD said he knew that, too, and that Heyman shouldn’t be worrying. He said he was RVD, the ECW World Champion and that’s all Heyman should need.

Edge and Lita came through the crowd and made two fans give up their ringside seats. After a commercial break, Tazz interviewed Edge about why he was here. Tazz said “here’ about 7 times in a 25 word sentence. Edge said he did what he wanted, when he wanted. He called himself the “Whole F’in Show” and said he’d beat whoever won the match tonight.

Match 4: ECW and WWE Champion Rob Van Dam vs. Kurt Angle
-(CMV1 note- man, this ought to be good…we still have about 15-minutes). The two stared each other down from opposite sides of the ring. Angle backed RVD into the ropes after an attempted lock up. Angle with a go-behind before RVD made it to the ropes. Angle took some cheap shot slaps at Van Dam. RVD got a headlock, but had it quickly countered into a mat takedown. A “We Want Cena” chant broke out. Angle, meanwhile, used a couple of European uppercuts to gain a little momentum. RVD came back with forearm shots followed by a monkey flip out of the corner. Angle grabbed a headlock and took Van Dam down to the mat. Van Dam countered with a head scissors, but Angle reversed out of it and grabbed an arm bar. Another “We want Cena” chant broke out. Meanwhile, RVD hit his step-over windmill kick and went to the top for high risk offense. Angle recovered quickly enough to push RVD off to the top rope, though. We then got a dreaded mid-match commercial break, as yours truly sits here wondering why the WWE continue to put ECW shows in front of WWE crowds, allowing for such ridiculous “Cena” chants. Back from the break, Angle had a rear chinlock on RVD for a lengthy period. Another small “Cena” chant broke out. RVD, meanwhile, battled out of the chinlock with a jawbreaker. Angle hit a belly-to-belly suplex to regain momentum, though. The Olympic Champion followed with a backbreaker for a near fall and then locked in a body scissor. RVD struggled to get out and actually scored a near fall on Angle while still in the body scissor. Angle added a keylock to his body scissor. Van Dam fought back and backed Angle into the turnbuckle. RVD hit a few shoulder thrusts before whipping Angle into the opposite corner. The champ tried for a splash, but Angle dodged it and hit a German suplex. Kurt then locked in a modified camel clutch. RVD battled back with elbows to the gut and right handed shots. Van Dam proceeded to hit a double leg lariat. The two traded forearms and uppercuts, but Van Dam hit a springboard back kick to stimulate his comeback. However, Angle picked up Van Dam and drove him to the corner. RVD tried to hit his patented kick out of the corner move, but Angle countered and hit a cradle suplex. Angle tried for the Olympic Slam, but RVD countered into a roll-up. Kurt countered the roll-up and went for the ankle lock, but RVD countered that w/ kicks. RVD tried to get in some offense, but Angle hit a German suplex that sent RVD end over end. Angle eventually tried to capitalize, but RVD hit a pressing kick. The champ tried to follow with a top rope side kick, but Angle countered and caught him in the ankle lock as he came down. After a lengthy struggle, RVD rolled forward and sent Angle out of the ring. RVD then connected with a slingshot leg drop. A near fall followed, but then Angle scored one of his own with small package. RVD got back in it quick with a roundhouse kick, but Angle countered Rolling Thunder into the ankle lock. RVD kicked his way out of it and hit the Split-Legged moonsault for a near fall. Van Dam stayed on it when he countered Kurt Angle’s counter to the enziguiri and hit a back kick. RVD went to the top for the 5-star, but Angle ran up the ropes like ring steps and threw him off. Angle tried for another Olympic Slam, but RVD countered into a DDT. The finish came when RVD pinned Angle clean with the 5-Star Frog Splash at 17:28. (CMV1 rating- *** ¼). After the match, Edge speared RVD and made out with Lita. (CMV1 note- A really good TV main-event that could’ve been better without the fairly ordinary first 8-9 minutes w/ the TV break. After that, business picked up and these two put on a nice little show, displaying some nice counters and false finishes. I’m surprised that RVD got the clean win, but this should not be the end of Angle-RVD…it should be the beginning. This was essentially a WWE-style match…Imagine what those two could do with a little more leeway. Uh-huh, I’m drooling over the thought of that, too)

All in all…A much better show than either of the last two week’s and one that ought to draw pretty strong reviews from most every fan out there. We got a strong opening match and a few good promos to go along with a lot less WWE-involvement, a nice use of the Big Show, and a really entertaining main-event w/ Angle and RVD. This is the kind of show I’d expect every single week from ECW. I think the less the WWE is involved, the more you’ll get to see stuff like that. The only problem was the “Cena” chants from the obviously lacking in ECW fans crowd. I look forward to next week’s show after this week’s strong performance, and thus I’m giving this a CMV1 record tying 7/10 …
