Heat: June 23, 2006
JR and Jonathan Coachman doing commentary this week inexplicably.
Match 1: Matt Striker vs Jason Statec
Statec gets put over by Lillian's announcing as the hometown boy from
Rochester, New York. Striker comes out in some slightly less ridiculous
green trunks and knee-pads (beats that golfing reject wardrobe he's worn
lately). The match starts off with the usually collar-and-elbow affair into
a headlock by Striker that's soon reversed into an armdrag by Statec. Statec
then puts his short but impressive physique to work with a short burst of
offense that is quickly neutralized with a thumb to the eye by Striker,
followed by throwing Statec into the corner ringpost.
Striker goes to work on the left shoulder of Statec, who tries to rally back
with right-handed chops and punches only to be taken down once again with a
unique arm-wringer/neckbreaker maneuver that I can't recall ever seeing done
before. From there, Striker locks in a modified abdominal stretch that locks
up both of Statec's arms in the process while sitting. Striker whips his
opponent to the ropes, but gets met with an elbow when charging into the
corner.
Statec then tries for a clothesline, but Striker ducks it and takes him down
with a forward-rolling armdrag of sorts that flows straight into a Fujiwara
armbar that leads to a quick submission win for the former school-teacher.
Winner: Matt Striker
Match 2: Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs. Jeff Starr & Dave Danger
Before the match gets underway Murdoch grabs the microphone just as he did
the week before and lets their opponents know that they're gonna commentate
on the mic just how they're going to break them in half as the match goes
on. The match starts off with Cade against littler of the two, as Cade
begins with a hard slap to the face (an "introduction" as Murdoch called it)
and then procedes to stomp the kid in the neutral corner.
After shooting the kid into the other corner and hitting a running elbow,
Cade tags in an eager Murdoch who passes the mic off to Cade before going to
work on their opponent. Cade bores me to tears with his microphone "skills"
while Murdoch hammers away at the kid, even hitting a vicious big boot for
good measure. Murdoch teases pin attempts a couple of times, but keeps
lifting the kid up at the two-count. Cade tags back in and makes the kid tag
in his bigger and slightly goofier looking partner. Murdoch comes back in
with mic in hand and tags in to stomp away at the fresh meat. Then Cade tags
back in for more ring time and mic time, but it's short-lived with another
tag to Murdoch who comes off the second rope with a punch to the tubby kid's
ribs.
A couple more minutes go by and the tubby kid (who looks like a Hugh Morris
wannabe to be quite honest) is still getting beat around by Cade and Murdoch
with frequent tags and commentary to boot. Tubby McGee (Dave Danger?)
rallies back with a couple punches finally, which are his first offensive
moves of the night, but he gets taken down pretty quick and is soon finished
off with the double-team clothesline/knee clip combo for the 1-2-3.
Winners: Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch
The third segment of Heat is just a recap of the D-X reunion essentially -
Pretty much the entire "Raw Rewind" that aired on Smackdown.
Main Event: Rob Conway vs. Val Venis
Val's back from injury (elbow) in his first "televised" match. It starts off
with the ol' collar-and-elbow that gets broken up in the corner, which leads
to a short shoving match and then another lock-up. A few examples of some
chain wrestling go down (waistlock, front facelock, etc) until Conway whips
Val to the ropes. Val rebounds back with a shoulder block and a quick pin
attempt for a one-count, then slowing it down with a headlock takedown.
Conway comes back for another round of running the ropes only to get hit
with another of Val's shoulder blocks into a quick pin attempt and then
another headlock takedown (De ja vue).
Conway takes the offensive finally after moving Val into the corner and
pokes the eye on the break-up. Val comes back quickly though and goes to
work with his patented knee-lifts to the abdomen routine that leads into a
Russian legsweep. Val then works the crowd as he stands over Conway,
gyrating his hips, and then starts punching away at the fallen Conway. The
Con Man ducks to the outer apron where a struggle ensues on which man can
suplex the other over the ropes. After several teases, Val finally suplexes
Conway back into the ring.
Conway takes control, however, when Val goes for an elbow drop and Rob uses
his knees to block it and aggrevates that healed elbow. Val rolls out to the
apron where a charging Conway nails him and sends the Big Valbowski falling
down the ring barricade below. After throwing Val back into the ring, Conway
hammers away on him with punches and kicks in the corner, punctuating it
with a baseball slide dropkick into Val's ribs and elbow. That brings up to
an abdominal stretch from Conway, conveniently near the ropes to allow
Conway some leverage. JR amusingly comments how the ref never puts two and
two together on why the ring ropes are shaking so much.
Val starts coming back with a series of clotheslines and elbow strikes that
lead into his modified sit-out powerbomb, but he only gets a two-count.
After taking a boot to the face, Val catches a charging Conway with a move
that looks like a sambo suplex of sorts. Seeing the stunned Conway on the
mat, Val signals for the end and climbs the ropes. Conway jumps up and
climbs the ropes with him, but is shoved off to the mat below where Val hits
the Money Shot and gets the three-count.
Winner: Val Venis
