WWE Saturday Night's Main Event Report March 18, 2006 in Detroit, Michigan
- We begin with Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon standing in front of McMahon's Muscle and Fitness cover. Great. Shawn Michaels is somewhere else in the locker room. "If you're going to hell, Vince, your son Shane is going with me," he said. Triple H cut a generic promo. Cena interrupted. JBL ran down a list of things he has done wrong in his life. Worms slid out of Boogeyman's mouth. Contrived opening, but the major players got face time.
- Jim Ross is hosting the broadcast with Tazz and Jerry Lawler. A new set with a more intricate setting. Good call and a very slick set.
- Triple H came out for the handicap match to kick things off. Interesting. Cena had more cheers than boos during his ring introduction. Jim Ross explained the differences between the WWE Title and World Heavyweight Title.
1 -- TRIPLE H & JOHN CENA vs. KURT ANGLE & REY MYSTERIO & RANDY ORTON
Cena went to work on Angle early. He hit a spinebuster for a nearfall. The smoke from the pyro didn't clear and created a foggy mixture with the bright lights. Angle delivered three consecutive German Suplexes on Triple H. Rey hit a springboard Sentaun on Hunter. Cena tagged in and the fans booed. Rey hit a drop kick as Lawler tried to cut down Rey because of his size. Very loud "Cena sucks" chant. Hunter caught Rey out of nowhere with a clothesline.
[Commercial Break]
Hunter continued to work on Rey. He knocked Rey to the outside. Hunter and Cena jawed back and forth because Cena didn't take Hunter's instructions well on beating up Rey. The "monarch of the mat," as J.R said, continued to work on Rey.
[Q2] Hunter locked on a sleeper in the middle of the ring. Rey hit a moonsault off the top rope on Hunter. Randy and Cena took hot tags. Cena was booed. Cena did the Five Knuckle Shuffle on Randy. Hunter came in the ring and gave Cena the Pedigree. Ross asked if Hunter and Randy were in collusion. Hunter hit the Pedigree on Rey and walked out of the ring. Cena slowly reached his feet. Randy prepared for the RKO, but Cena blocked and rolled up Randy for the quick pin. Hunter was in disbelief on the outside.
WINNERS: Cena & Hunter. Good energy to start the show. They did their best to make it look like Randy lost the match and not Smackdown, which would have confirmed Smackdown as the inferior brand.
[Commercial Break]
- They did the Hall of Fame announcement segment.
- Booker T feigned a knee injury. Teddy Long asked Booker about it. A doctor couldn't find anything wrong. Sharmell told Teddy that Booker would have to cancel the match with Boogeyman. The doctor said Booker is feeling a considerable amount of pain. Teddy said the match is off. Teddy was almost trying to make Booker feel guilty. Booker and Sharmell hobbled out of the locker room. They got out the door and they shared a laugh before Booker feigned his injury some more. Thankfully, we're saved from seeing Boogeyman wrestle...for now.
- Edge and Lita came out for the Cutting Edge.
[Commercial Break]
[Q3]
- Lita introduced the Cutting Edge. "The most watched champion of the last five years and the man who is perfect at WrestleMania," she said. Edge said he plans to remain perfect at Mania. He pointed out the various weapons ringside. Edge said Foley has gone from a hardcore legend to a cuddly teddy bear. Everyone in the arena sat quiet because he was speaking the truth. He said the only way Foley will get a reaction is if he plugs the name of the city and his latest outside endeavor. Edge introduced Foley. No answer. Edge said Foley is the most over-rated superstar in the history of wrestling. Foley's music hit. Foley came to the ring with a bag. Edge lit a table on fire. A stagehand put the fire out. That was lame. Foley attacked Edge with right hands. He slammed Edge in the corner with a running knee. Foley emptied the bag of thumbtacks in the ring. Lita hit Foley from behind and Edge threw Foley head-first into the tacks. Foley got up and chased Edge to the outside. Foley blocked a chair shot and slammed a chair into Edge's gut. Foley slammed Edge's head in between his chair and Edge's chair. Security and the Booker T doctor ran to the stage to check on Edge. Foley was bleeding from the forehead. Foley is the new Ric Flair in that Foley isn't talking after Edge trash talks Foley.
[Commercial Break]
- J.R. introduced the McMahon-Michaels feud before going to a lengthy video package on Vince's power-hungry behavior. Many historical clips including Survivor Series 1997. We saw the beginning of the feud when Michaels told McMahon to move on and McMahon said he hates people like Michaels. The ass kissing and McMahon's cursing were bleeped.
[Q4]
- J.R. and Lawler discussed the Michaels-Shane street fight.
- Booker T stepped out of the shower with a towel around his waist. Sharmell took her top off for no reason, revealing her bra. Booker and Sharmell discussed Teddy falling for the knee injury. They said they were going to celebrate. The awkward segment continued when the Boogeyman light show filled the locker room. Boogeyman dropped into the locker room hanging from the ceiling. Booker and Sharmell took off screaming. They ran past various wrestlers.
- JBL came out for the beer-drinking segment.
[Commercial Break]
- We saw glasses upon glasses upon glasses of beer on a table in the center of the ring. Tazz and J.R. discussed last night's Smackdown.
- JBL said this is the moment NBC execs and fans have been waiting for. JBL listed his nickname credentials. He said SNME was in the bowels of America. He called Detroit's mayor a laughing stock. They cheered. He called Detroit citizens idiots for voting for him. He ran down the sports teams. How 'bout them Lions? He said Detroit automakers are losing to Toyota. Yeah, because Toyota has better quality vehicles. JBL continued down the cheap heat road. He rambled on and on and on. Finally, the glass broke. Steve Austin drove to the ring in a truck. He honked his horn. J.R. said Austin is his favorite Texan. It sure isn't Vince Young. Austin saluted all four corners. J.R. said he watched JBL train for the contest last night. Austin said he's thirsty. He said JBL tried to sneak up on him. Austin asked why JBL challenged him. JBL said it's because he didn't mention JBL as a great Texan. Austin told JBL to calm down. He said he had beer for breakfast for lunch because he was worried about JBL beating him. He went for a drink. JBL cut him off. He said he makes up the rules. Austin looked out of it. JBL said he has some really good beer from Canada that you can't get in Detroit.
[Q5] JBL laid out the rules for the contest. He said they would go back-to-back and do an old school shoot out with the beer. JBL said he isn't Brokeback Mountain; he's a real cowboy. "Not that there's anything wrong with that," J.R. chimed in Seinfeld-style. "No comment," Austin said. JBL said they would have one minute. Austin called JBL the one-minute man. JBL asked if he had been talking to his wife. They went back-to-back. JBL pulled a Ted Striker in Airplane and spilled a bunch of beer on himself to pretend like he drank several glasses. J.R. took a shot at the Longhorns. Typical Sooners fan jealous of Texas winning the National Title after Oklahoma was blown out by USC the year before. Austin caught JBL cheating. He turned around and chased JBL out of the ring. Chris Benoit threw JBL back into the ring. Austin threw beer on JBL. He put on JBL's cowboy hat. He hit the Stunner and posed. A novel segment for anyone who hasn't watched wrestling in the last 13 years. Otherwise, not much to it other than some buzz lines. JBL resorted to the cheap heat more than any Mick Foley promo.
- Candice Michelle posed in front of her Playboy cover. The ever-shrinking Victoria interrupted and told Candice they had a fight coming up.
[Commercial Break]
- Candice Michelle and Victoria came to the ring. J.R. rhetorically asked if Candice would like to come an Oklahoma BBQ. Lawler put the words fantasize and hotel in the same sentence. Mickie James came out and J.R. said she's psycho. He's been keeping up with the program. We saw a video package on Mickie's antics. Mickie watched the video package with no expression. J.R. reminded us that Torrie Wilson was laid out on Raw, leading to Mickie teaming with Trish. J.R said Trish is a taste of Canada that even Austin would enjoy. Too much "old dirty man" talk.
2 -- TRISH STRATUS & MICKIE JAMES vs. CANDICE MICHELLE & VICTORIA
J.R. said Candice is the weakest link in the match. Victoria worked on Trish. The crowd was silent. Well, after an hour of no wrestling in the ring, I'm not surprised. Mickie took a tag, but the referee didn't see it. Trish blocked a double team vertical suplex. Mickie tried to get the crowd going with the slow clap. They eventually caught on and Victoria cut Mickie off from taking a tag. Trish hit Stratusfaction for the win out of nowhere.
Afterwards, Mickie took the mic. She said this is good-bye. She extended a hand. Trish shook it. Mickie pulled Trish in for a kiss, but Trish pulled her head away and Mickie kissed her on the cheek. Mickie hugged Trish then they pulled away. Trish was upset. Mickie answered with a kick to the face. The crowd popped. She hit Stratusfaction on Trish. The crowd went silent. J.R. called Mickie psycho.
WINNERS: Trish & Mickie. As I wrote during Raw, it was obvious the turn was coming in this match and I wasn't happy about it. It was too clichéd after months and months of build up. It's no wonder the ending fell flat.
[Q6]
[Commercial Break]
- During commercial, Mickie talked with Coach. She said she loves Trish, but she broke her heart. "Do you love me now, Trish Stratus?" Mickie screamed. "You broke my heart and now I'm going to break you."
- J.R., Tazz, and Lawler discussed the WrestleMania card. Booker T vs. Boogeyman has been added to Mania.
- Mark Henry came to the ring with Daivari. J.R. said Undertaker would be out next.
[Commercial Break]
- Daivari said Henry is not afraid of Undertaker's winning streak, a casket, or The Undertaker. No heat. Henry said Taker is afraid of him. Boy, this is dragging. He said he would beat Taker if it's the last thing...the bell tolled. J.R. said it was a prophetic statement. (Henry is done at Mania for sure.) Druids rolled a coffin to the ring. Tazz said Henry was looking at his fate. Undertaker appeared at the top of the entrance ramp.
[Q7] Undertaker continued to make his way to ring. J.R. said the casket reminds him of the large casket used for Yokozuna. That's one of the worst lines I've ever heard. They exchanged blows in the ring. They brawled to the outside. Taker slammed Henry into the ring steps. He chokeslammed Daivari onto the casket. Undertaker picked up Daivari and gave him a Tombstone on the casket. The lights dimmed around Taker. Same ole' Taker segment.
- Shawn Michaels was walking through the backstage area for the street fight. Unfortunately, he didn't get the memo because he was dressed in normal ring attire.
[Commercial Break]
- Lillian Garcia introduced the Shane-Michaels street fight. Only way to win is by submission or pinfall. Michaels came out in his ring gear. He had a band-aid across his forehead. Lawler defended Michaels for being a good guy who Vince has tried to tear down. Shane came out with Vince. Michaels ran up the entrance ramp and jumped Shane.
3 -- SHAWN MICHAELS vs. SHANE MCMAHON (w/Vince McMahon)
They fought to the ringside area. Michaels grabbed a steel chair from under the ring. He slammed it over Shane's back. HBK set up a table ringside. Shane countered an Irish whip and sent HBK into the ringpost. Shane set up his own table with Vince looking on. J.R. said Vince is a tortured soul. Shane grabbed a ladder and slid it into the ring. He slammed HBK back-first into the ringpost twice. Shane set up the ladder in the ring. Vince placed HBK on the two tables on the outside. Shane climbed the ladder in the ring. HBK punched Vince in the face. He slid off the table and grabbed Shane, who was on top of the ladder. Vince tried to pull HBK down, but he kicked him away. HBK set up for a superplex. He executed the move through the tables on the floor. Great highspot. Both men were motionless. Vince had a look of disbelief and pain on his face. He checked on Shane. HBK began to stir. Vince called for medical help.
[Q8]
[Commercial Break]
Both men were getting to their feet in the ring. HBK dropped Shane with a right hand. Lawler said Vince instructed the medics to ignore HBK during the commercial break. HBK propped a ladder in the corner and climbed up the turnbuckle to the top of the ladder. Vince hit him in the back with a kendo stick like an old lady swatting a fly. They replayed the table spot several times. Shane slammed the ladder into HBK's back. That looked painful. Vince's sadistic smile returned. Shane repeated the spot. Vince pretended to sell the spot. J.R. said Vince is devoid of human kindness. "In Vince McMahon's world, I don't think he would even care if his own son, Shane, went to hell if he beats Shawn Michaels," J.R. said. Shane scored a nearfall after J.R. went into "there's no way the babyface can win" mode. Shane applied the first mat hold of the match with a surfboard stretch coupled with a knee to the back. HBK fought to his feet much to Vince's chagrin. HBK reversed the hold and went after Vince, who jumped on the apron. HBK turned around and took a DDT for a nearfall. Shane clocked HBK in the face with a chair. Shane dragged HBK to the corner. Vince gave him a trashcan for the VanShane spot. HBK moved out of the way and Shane drop kicked the trashcan into Vince's face. HBK made his comeback. HBK with a punch to the face followed by a nip up and right hands. He went up top and dropped an elbow. The crowd came to life as HBK warmed up the band. He dropped Shane with Sweet Chin Music. The referee counted to two and Vince pulled the ref out of the ring. HBK threw Vince into the ring. He cornered Vince before Shane delivered a low blow from behind. Shane applied the Sharpshooter. Vince ran out of the ring and told the referee to ring the damn bell. J.R. said Vince screwed Bret Hart in 1997 and we have to re-live it. Actually, we've been re-living it for eight years thanks to Vince's bruised ego. J.R. said the McMahons will pay at WrestleMania.
WINNER: Shane McMahon via "submission." Oh boy. They opened the can of worms again with the "authority figure can call for the bell whenever he wants to" angle. It's used only when it's convenient for the story and it's probably the laziest form of storytelling in wrestling. Otherwise, a good fight with high energy from the performers and the crowd.
