The Smackdown! Report (03/17/06)
Match 1: Lumberjack Match (MITB II Qualifier) - Finlay vs. Lashley -Lashley started off strong against Finlay, but soon fell victim to the heel lumberjacks. Finlay then took control w/ basic offense, but Lashley fought back quickly w/ a belly-to-belly suplex. He proceeded to hit a one-armed delayed vertical suplex and a guerilla press slam into a throw over the top rope and onto the heel lumberjacks. The bad guys tried to hold Lashley down, but the Real Deal was not to be denied, as he fought them all off to get back to Finlay in the middle of the ring. Sylvain would eventually try to get involved by using a steel chair, but Lashley dropped him w/ a spear. Unfortunately, the distraction gave Finlay the chance to use his shillelagh and score the win. Finlay defeated Lashley to become eligible for MITB II. (CMV1 rating- * ¾) (CMV1 note- surprising that Lashley lost, but I think it makes more sense to let Finlay into MITB…at least for now. I personally think Lashley will get added to MITB).
Backstage, MNM were taking a peek at Candice Michelle’s Playboy cover. They also had the Muscle and Fitness magazine cover w/ Vinnie Mac on the cover. When Melina entered the scene, she insinuated what she’d like to do to Vince. Paul Birchall then made is presence felt and pulled his sword on the tag champs.
Match 2: Paul Burchill and Kristal vs. William Regal and Jillian Hall -Not much to this match, as Burchill pinned Regal following the C4. (CMV1 rating- ½ *). (CMV1 note- nothing to speak of…poor Burchill isn’t impressing the live crowds yet).
Match 3: Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Jeremy Young -(CMV1 note- before the match backstage, Sharmell expressed her concern about the Boogeyman). Book wasted little time in this squash. He hit the scissor’s kick. Thus, Booker T got the win. (CMV1 rating- ¼ *). (CMV1 note- not much to it).
A three way interview got underway, featuring World Champion Kurt Angle and his challengers at Wrestlemania, Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio. Orton got the heat going when he asked Angle how his neck felt after being hit w/ the RKO last week. Kurt talked about the pain he goes through everyday following years worth of neck injuries and two surgeries to help correct it. Randy cut him off and moved on to Mysterio, implying that had it not been for Eddie’s death and people like TRL that feel sorry for him, he wouldn’t even be in the main-event. Angle interrupted him, defending Rey and directly telling Orton that it was he who didn’t belong in the main-event since Mysterio won the Royal Rumble. Mysterio finally spoke up and said he didn’t need to be defended and that it wasn’t just people feeling bad for him that he got to the main-event, a point he said he’d prove by winning the World title at Mania. Orton shrugged off both comments, calling Angle a paper champion who could only get the belt by slipping in through the back door and winning a title that Randy didn’t even get a chance to compete for. Angle countered, mentioning how Orton had only been champion for a month. Three angry heated looks later, and the segment ended. (CMV1 note- solid hype for the Mania main-event).
Match 4: MITB II Qualifier- Matt Hardy vs. Road Warrior Animal -In a lackluster match that tried to build up Animal’s new heel status, the Road Warrior initially got the win when he blasted Hardy in the face w/ brass knuckles. Unfortunately for him, he did so in a manner that allowed the ref to see it on replay and reverse his decision. Thus, Hardy defeated Regal to qualify for MITB II. (CMV1 rating- ¾ *). (CMV1 note- not good stuff thanks to Animal. Time to retire, my man).
Match 5: Chris Benoit vs. Orlando Jordan -(CMV1 note- JBL did guest commentary). In a short match, Benoit defeated OJ w/ the Sharpshooter. (CMV1 rating- ½ *) (CMV1 note- seen it five million times).
Backstage, Mark Henry played the “I’m not afraid of caskets” routine and said he’d call out the Deadman at SNME.
Match 6: WHC Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio vs. Mark Henry and WWE Tag Champs MNM -In a solid tag main-event, the heels began by working over Angle’s mid-section. Angle and Rey worked the majority of the match against MNM. The finish came when Angle and Rey hit their finishers on Mercury, only for Orton to come in and score the pin. Rey, Angle, and Randy defeated MNM and Henry. (CMV1 rating- ** ½) (CMV1 note- pretty decent main-event, but not enough to save a lackluster show).
All in all …Not exactly a good SD, but not bad. I thought the hype was solid, all things considered, but the night left something to be desired. I’ll give it a 5.5/10 and call it a night. Sorry for the lack of detail, but it’s St. Patrick’s Day…got to give me a Friday here and there…
