RESULTS FROM CWF MID-ATLANTIC TV TAPING HELD ON JANUARY 21st IN BURLINGTON, NC
*** Near riot ensues from fans during final two bouts! *** Special update on AWA World Title *** Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka to appear *** CWF Mid-Atlantic home-grown talent signs WWE contract
The following results are from the CWF Mid-Atlantic TV Taping held Saturday, January 21st, at the Carolina Sports Arena located in Burlington, NC. All bouts are sanctioned by the AWA, the American Wrestling Association.
1. Tony Kozina defeated Vince the Prince by pinfall (7:14)
2. The Street Sweepers (Jay Sinn & Gregory Vercetti) defeated Joey Denson & Roy Wilkins in tag action by pinfall (6:49)
3. Marcellus King, Julius Augustus & Mitch Connor defeated the AWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Champion The $outh$ide Playas (J-Money & Will B. Smooth w/Kiyia Moka) & Brass Munkey in six-man non-title tag action by pinfall (14:32)
4. AWA Mid-Atlantic Television Champion Rob "Boogie Woogie Man" McBride defeated the Shadow by pinfall to retain the title (7:20)
5. Amber O'Neal & GeeStar defeated Krissy Vaine & Venus in ladies tag action by pinfall (8:03)
6. Garry "Madd Trucker" Stevens defeated Joshua Boyd by pinfall (7:16)
7. Joey Silvia & Xsiris defeated Tank Lawson & Drake Tungsten w/Cornelius J. Lumpkin III in tag action by pinfall (13:12)
8. "Box Office Draw" Mikael Yamaha w/manager Brad Stutts defeated "Rock N Roll" Matty Dee by pinfall in a Grudge Match (8:36)
9. AWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion "Slick Diddy" Ric Converse defeated Russell Simpson by submission to retain the title (15:14)
Officials: Charles Richardson & Red Jones
Notes: Referee Red Jones was knocked unconscious during the Yamaha/Dee bout, and a mysterious masked figure hit the ringside area, climbed into the ring behind Dee and dropped him with a low blow. Manager Brad Stutts directed traffic, bringing Donnie Dollars out to the ring to finish off Dee. Dollars destroyed the already beat down Dee, causing a retaliation by GeeStar and Roy Wilkins, who hit the ring with steel chairs. The masked figure hit the ring again, alongside of Yamaha, Stutts & Dollars, and helped destroy GeeStar, Wilkins & Dee. The masked figure, while still punching GeeStar in the face, was unmasked by Yamaha, revealing Amber O'Neal under the silver mask.
Russell Simpson was forced to tap out in the main event after a knee injury near the 15 minute mark, giving "Slick Diddy" a major victory over a AWA Japan Zero-1 competitor who competes all over the world.
Fans at the Carolina Sports Arena were at a fever pitch for both of the final bouts. Fans desperately wanted to see Mikael Yamaha get what he had coming, only to be disheartened by Amber O'Neal assisting Yamaha instead.
Then in the main event the excitement was nearly uncontrollable as Russell Simpson had promised to "rip the heart out of the Mid- Atlantic" by winning the title and taking it back as a present for Mr. McMahon. Thankfully Converse was able to prevail as the "King of the Mid-Atlantic" and secured himself once again as the number one contender to the AWA World Heavyweight Championship.

AWA World Heavyweight Title changes hands in Japan
While Ric Converse successfully defended the AWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title in Burlington, NC, his opponent for next week's main event, Steve Corino, was not so lucky in Tokyo, Japan. Corino was 2/3 the way through what he deemed his toughest three weeks of title defenses he's ever made.
Corino was able to turn back Tully Blanchard last weekend in Georgia. This weekend he had to fly to Japan to defend against the #2 ranked Shinjiro Ohtani and followed that up by heading to Burlington, NC to defend against #1 contender Ric Converse.
The task was a bit too much as Ohtani would have luck on his side Sunday, putting Corino's shoulders down for the three count and capturing the REAL World Heavyweight Title during the Zero-1-Max event, "Faithfully."
Ohtani is no stranger to "puroresu" wrestling fans. He's captured the Zero-1 annual "Fire Tournament" on two separate occassions. Ohtani has also challenged for the AWA World Hwt. Title but had so far come up short against both Corino and former champion Takao Omori.
What does this mean for the #1 ranked contender, Ric Converse? Converse is guaranteed a championship bout but the question becomes more of a logistical one. With the new champion living in Japan, there are quite a few legal steps to take place to be able to bring the new champion into the country, not to mention aquiring an international flight on short notice.
CWF Mid-Atlantic's Commissioner Cross was on the phone with AWA President Dale Gagne and Zero-1-Max's Nakamura late Sunday attempting to work out the necessary details in order to secure Ohtani's presence for this Saturday night's scheduled World Title defense in Burlington, NC.
Upon hearing about the victory by Ohtain, Mid-Atlantic Champion Ric Converse said, "This is exactly what I was talking about last week. You never know who you're going to be facing next week at the World Champion. I was prepared for facing Corino, now it could be Ohtani. That's what I'm preparing for... the unknown. The ability to face anyone, anywhere, at anytime. That's the mark of a great World Champion. Now all I need to do is get in the ring with the World Championship on the line, whether it be Steve Corino or Shinjiro Ohtani, you better believe that Slick Diddy will be ready!"
As soon as we have more information, it will be announced via our online newsletter and at cwfmidatlantic.com
