The Wrath of Tito - 2005 Year in Review and Tito Awards
Submitted by Mr. Tito on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 2:17 PM EST
Start spreading the news.... Welcome to the Wrath of Tito, the YEAR END EDITION! First thing's first... Congrats to Ms. Jesie West of Alabama for winning the Wrath of Tito Contest #2. She aced the exam, getting each of the tough 15 questions correct (and even telling me where she found the answers). I had a bunch of 13 and 14 scores, which tells me that the contest questions were a tad easier than the last one (winner had 13 correct). Most of the questions could have been found with a lot of digging on Google. For anyone who wants to find the answers to the contest questions, go to the BLOG. The biggest killers were the Chicago/Kenny Rogers question and the "White Men Can't Jump" questions. The Chicago/Kenny Rogers was probably the hardest one to dig for, while "White Men Can't Jump" was said by Dave Chappelle in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" when a white guy tried to jump on a horse but failing miserably. Seriously, isn't it too obvious that it would be Wesley Snipes?
2005 is about to be over... For me, I thought I had a fun year, wrestling-wise. I wrote two of the columns that I always wanted to write (Winner's Curse and Union columns) and I tweaked my style that seems to be getting lots of raves from readers. Sometimes, writing for the last 3 years has been a chore, whereas I've looked forward to most of the columns I've written for the second half of 2005. As for 2005 as a whole, it was an interesting year to say the least. I though 2004 was a good year for the WWE, while 2005 was kinda up and down (but still better than 2003, the worst year in wrestling since 1993). You had some good, some bad, and some ugly. I'll discuss that today in my 2005 Year in Review. Then, I'll give out my 2005 Tito Awards for the Best in WWE wrestling (noting the disclaimer that it's WWE awards!). Enjoy and THANKS A MILLION for reading, once again.
2005 Year in Review
The year started off, I though, with a bad hangover from the end of 2004. The WWE tried to make Randy Orton as World Champion but failed miserably. Orton is a reported close friend of HHH backstage and this 24 year old was placed into a push that he was not yet ready for. After wrestling much of the year as Intercontinental Champion and as a heel, he was suddenly turned into a face before the fans wanted him to turn face (unlike Cena, Rock, and Austin who were each turned face at the right times and fans responded well). WWE lacked patience on Orton and that took the wind out of their sails from what I thought was a solid 2004 campaign for the RAW brand. Triple H kept trying and trying to get Randy Orton over, but it didn't work. They finally blew the feud off at Royal Rumble, though the blowoff match was supposed to happen at Wrestlemania 21!
If HHH couldn't make one of his close friends a main eventer, he'll try with another. That man was Batista. Batista faired better, at first. The angle played out that Batista started to see stars in his eyes and wanted a possible title shot from HHH. Fans caught onto this early excellent booking and Batista was cheered heavily. Oddly enough, the WWE writers showed up for this push and Batista became legit enough to merit the Royal Rumble 2005 victory. Then, more brilliant booking occurred, as Batista was tempted by the Smackdown roster to make the jump to take his title shot at Wrestlemania, much like Benoit did in 2004. This built up drama, especially with HHH wanting Batista to go to Smackdown so that Evolution could dominate both rosters. Batista, however, was upset at HHH's behind the scenes actions and wanted a piece of the Game for the World Title at Wrestlemania 21. After Batista's face turn, well, the interest started to drop.
After his face turn, the writers gave Batista very robotic scripted lines and didn't let his personality carry him as he did while still in Evolution and defying HHH. Then, not only did Batista wrestle Triple H once after Wrestlemania's victory, but twice. For the first half of 2005, Batista was stuck with Triple H and as champion, the focus became Triple H's chase to regain the title and not Batista's impressive title wins. Batista was then shipped to the Smackdown roster where he's World Champion to this day. He remains popular and probably stabilizes the product, but he's not the drawing champion he could have been. Where was the great writing leading up to the face turn? Batista could have been money, but in my humble opinion, the WWE has severely dropped the ball.
Speaking of writers dropping the ball, the same goes for John Cena. Since he's turned face, Cena has lost his edge. He's rarely allowed to rip into wrestlers like he once was. The edge he had in his rhymes got him over as a face while being a heel, but since turning face, he's lost the adult male audience but retains the kids who still thinks that the character is cool. The WWE, in my mind, needs to restore the edge that Cena had when he was a heel and give him an open mic. Earlier this year, a bunch of title contenders were in the ring and Cena tore them to shreds with a rap. It received a HUGE pop. Yet the WWE never went back to that and his popularity with older fans has dropped significantly ever since, while the pops you hear now are from children. It's funny to hear it, too, for the adults are cheering "Let's go [other wrestler]" while a very high pitched cheer of "Let's Go Cena" occurs from Children. Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and recently Shelton Benjamin were all getting adult pops while Cena still had the male pops. Kids love the guy and it should be the WWE's responsibility to bridge the gap of two generations of fans. Once the WWE gives Cena some added attitude and gives him freedom on the mic, there's NO DOUBT in my mind that Cena will have a big 2006 year. It's just a matter of wanting Cena to become very popular on the WWE's part.
Cena won the World Title at Wrestlemania against John Bradshaw Layfield. JBL had a rough 2004 where I thought he was rushed to the title. However, in 2005, JBL was coming into his own as champion and I thought he stepped up to become a legit main eventer. He's become a valuable asset for the WWE and I believe he's worth making champion once again. Good heels = Good champions. JBL, however, generated heat of a different kind when he attended the ECW One Night Only Pay Per View. JBL's actions actually overshadowed any good that either of the 2 big ECW reunion shows did! At One Night Only, JBL took INTERNET COMMENTS too seriously from the Blue Meanie. I guess Meanie has posted or said something in an audio show about how much of a bully JBL was backstage during Meanie's WWE reign. In addition, JBL appeared as though he felt taunted by Meanie when the Blue Guy pointed up to the balcony when the BWO arrived. When the WWE superstars came to the ring later that night for a big brawl, Bradshaw went right after the Meanie. Mind you, Blue Meanie was stitched up after taking a nasty chairshot at the Hardcore Homecoming show the night before. Bradshaw started shooting on the Meanie, laying many roundhouses, and then escaped the ring with his life! This caused a lot of internet buzz and a lot of backlash against Bradshaw. Luckily, the WWE did the right thing with Meanie and gave the guy a job for part of this year and later letting him defeat Bradshaw in a match! Some say Bradshaw wasn't punished... well, he was a main eventer and he lost to a guy the WWE had part-time!
Back to Cena... After Wrestlemania, Cena would soon end up on the RAW roster during the roster trades (Also noting that Big Show and Kurt Angle also jumped to RAW, while Randy Orton and Chris Benoit jumped to Smackdown). Many figured he would cut loose on his raps now being off the strict UPN standards and practices. WRONG. But he would soon encounter a guy who has been dogging him on camera for a while. His name was Christian. Christian, during early 2005, was getting very over on the microphone. This started ever since he punked out Cena backstage at a Pay Per View with a rap. Since then, Christian kept calling Cena out and fans were eager to see what would happen once Cena finally arrived on RAW. So it should have been a huge feud, right? WRONG. The WWE soon inserted Chris Jericho into the mix and the feud quickly spun off into John Cena vs. Chris Jericho. Christian's push was over and he was shipped to Smackdown where he would rot until his contract ran out. Christian has since joined NWA-TNA and we'll have to wait and see on that move.
Meanwhile, John Cena vs. Chris Jericho was on. Well, actually, it was off. The WWE writers dedicated more time to Hogan vs. HBK (and rightfully so), and Jericho vs. Cena didn't look worthy of title contention. Luckily, the match was very good at Summerslam and it was clear that Cena's face status would be challenged for the rest of the year with the children yelling "Let's Go Cena" and the adults yelling "Let's Go Jericho" with dueling chants. This was Chris Jericho's last real shot at the spotlight, for he would soon exit the WWE and become "actor/musician", as listed on Vh1's Best Week Ever. Jericho has dropped several internet hints that NWA-TNA was an option, but it appears, for now, that he's just playing with fans. Jericho IS a Free Agent as far as pro wrestling is concerned and he owns the rights to his name. Many suggest that since his Unified Title run in 2002, he's been given a raw deal by the WWE. We'll see, especially if he shows up for a competitor. Cena, meanwhile, would embark on a feud with Kurt Angle and now seems to be heading for a feud with Triple H at Wrestlemania 22. Good luck.
While I'm still on Summerslam, let's talk about Hulk Hogan vs. Shawn Michaels. Hogan came back on a great nostalgia trip, once again, following his Hall of Fame Induction at Wrestlemania 21. Getting Hogan in as a hall of famer made the showcase legit in Vince's mind and he pretty much gave Hogan free reign for 2005 to do whatever with his character. This would be vital, as Hogan returned to tag up with Shawn Michaels to take on Muhammad Hassan and Daivari at a Pay Per View. Hogan and HBK would keep tagging up until HBK drilled Hogan with Chin Music as a very shocking ending to RAW. This allowed HBK to FINALLY flirt with being heel again, as he cut some of the best promos from 2005 and probably almost started a riot up in Canada! This feud was hyped huge for Summerslam and outshadowed everything on the card, but it didn't live up to expectations. For one, Hogan IS an old man. That's no offense to him, whatsoever. He's over 50 now and he has a hip replacement and a blown out knee that's never been allowed to recover. Michaels gave everything he had in that match, but to no avail. The finish, though, sent some ripples. HBK hit Hogan with everything but the kitchen sink in that match while Hogan simply "hulked up" after Chin Music and defeated HBK easily.
Behind the scenes, however, it was getting nasty. Hogan had creative control over his character, which I believe was a condition for the Hall of Fame induction by Vince McMahon. The original plan was to have 2 matches; Hogan winning one and HBK winning the other. However, Hogan wanted to win both matches! This caused HBK to only want one match and backstage frustrations over the set up of the pathetic finish that only made Hogan look good. HBK was very bitter about this match and has even somewhat shot from the hip about it on various in-ring interviews. Needless to say, Hulk Hogan is still Hulk Hogan. Oh, I have to say something good about Hogan in this column? Well, his family reality show did well in the ratings and was picked up for another season on Vh1. And Hogan has a hot daughter... though she can't sing.
That was a rough storyline discussion... let's get dirty... Let's get into some of the DIRT from 2005. First off, how about Matt Hardy, Edge, and Lita? For Valentine's Day 2005, Matt Hardy planned on proposing to Lita. Hardy was out in early 2005 (maybe late 2004) with an injured knee and was about to have his personal life turned upside down. Hardy has been dating Lita since around 1999. He's been a loyal boyfriend and took extra good care of Lita while she was recovering from her neck and knee injuries. What did Hardy receive in return? Lita began screwing around with good friend Edge, who mind you, was married to someone he proclaimed that he loved in his book "Adam Copeland on Edge". Once Hardy found out, trouble began to brew. Instead of confronting the problem backstage and maybe even going to management about how pissed off he was, Matt Hardy acted cowardly and began to tell fans about his break-up with Lita at autograph signings and began to reveal what really happened on his webpage. By going public with the matter, word quickly spread from fans to fans about what happened and Lita, a face at the time, instantly lost her credibility as a face while feuding with Trish Stratus. Loud "You Screwed Matt" chants began and it pissed off the WWE so much that Matt Hardy was instantly fired. Then, the "You Screwed Matt" chants began to follow both Edge and Lita. This forced the WWE to scrap the Kane/Lita storyline and put Lita with Edge to play off what the fans knew. Matt's going public affected planned storylines and broke "kayfabe" or revealing personal lives or happenings backstage to fans.
Matt was about to become a Free Agent. He could have went to TNA and could have been cheered as a martyr, but instead, he took WWE money (don't blame him on the guaranteed $$$) and took a massive depushing while feuding (or losing) to Edge in various matches. Hardy lost a tough match against Edge at the first RAW on USA Networks. Hardy is now on Smackdown where he's basically going to rot until his potential is fully wasted. Matt Hardy, though, may be a winner, after all, in this scenario. He soon met up with Ashley Massaro, the 2005 winner of the Diva Contest, and she's got some legit staying power to her (doing very well with fan reception and liked by management).
Getting more dirty was the WWE and their copyrights. Maybe using the old WCW lawsuit where the WWE sued WCW for acting like Scott Hall/Kevin Nash were still employed with the WWE and some gimmick infringement, the WWE began to snipe at former wrestlers. If you worked for the WWE, WCW, or ECW at some point in your life, your gimmick AND likeness was now property of the WWE's. And they enforced it harshly. The Dudleys could no longer be the Dudleys. Billy Kidman is no longer Billy Kidman. No more Justin Credible. The ECW reunion tour known as "Hardcore Homecoming" had to watch any ECW allusions or mentions or the WWE legal department would snipe at them. WWE was even reportedly successful at getting various venues to cancel or refuse Hardcore Homecoming shows. It's quite bastard of the WWE to do this, but it should serve as a lesson to many pro wrestlers to copyright their names and gimmicks before entering the WWE. Especially the Dudleys, who fumbled the ball many times on copyrighting their names. Now, who will recognize Brother Ray and Brother Devon?
WWE's tenure on Spike TV/TNN came to an end in 2005 and it started to get nasty. Spike TV immediately made it know that they had no interest in resigning the WWE. This killed the WWE from a bargaining standpoint, as the early announcement may have scared off potential buyers (maybe giving it a buyer's beware tag) and lessening WWE's asking range. USA Networks brought the WWE back for a very good price on their part and it was actually something that caused many WWE wrestlers to lose their jobs before the switch (which also forced the copyright issue). Spike TV has tried to counter the WWE by signing NWA-TNA to a deal for the Velocity timeslot (even trying to boast that TNA is doing better on that timeslot than the WWE, even though Velocity was a recap show with shitty jobber matches... not the #1 WWE show by any means). Also, Spike thought that UFC would be a contender on Monday nights. UFC's ratings soon dropped, same with Ultimate Fighter, and the WWE has been doing quite well on USA Networks, thank you. The first show on USA Networks had a whole lot of star power, like Mick Foley, Shane and Stephanie McMahon, Hulk Hogan, and Steve Austin all returning. Steve Austin, the man who took up most of the time on the show, would soon exit the WWE and there are conflicting stories about that (whether he was hurt lifting furnature before his match with the Coach or not remains to be seen). Hogan did a quick hint that he wanted to wrestle Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 22, but there's no doubt in this author's minds that those 2 major egos won't get into the same right together and decide on a finish that makes both parties happy.
WWE continues to "wrestle" with Brock Lesnar over the contract exit terms from 2004. Lesnar failed to become an NFL star in 2004 and is unable to wrestle or perform elsewhere until something like 2010 on a large no-compete clause. Lesnar went to court, arguing that the contract terms denies his opportunity to get a job. WWE and Lesnar continue to fight over terms, including Lesnar wrestling over in Japan. WWE has recently let off on the Japan wrestling thing, making me wonder if they've settled out of court and if Lesnar will finally return to the WWE? Keep a close eye on this situation for 2006.
A nasty story came from UPN vs. WWE. After London trains were bombed by terrorists on a Thursday, the WWE/UPN decided to still air a disgusting angle. The match was Daivari vs. Undertaker and the Undertaker pretty much destroyed Daivari. After the match, Muhammed Hassan, the Arabian American character who was mainly an anti-American based on racial biases, turned into a terrorist leader by ordering 3 or 4 guys in ski-masks and camoflage pants attack the Undertaker by choking him with wire. The WWE was clearly playing off terrorist hatred, which was completely disgusting in the wake of 9/11 and our ongoing fight with those fanatic murderers. After the Undertaker attack, Daivari was carried out of the ring like a religious martyr. This was on the same day as the London attacks and the WWE thought the angle was OK to air with a disclaimer. However, that was untrue, as UPN was flooded with calls. WWE was hoping for publicity from the angle, but what they got was an embarrassed Viacom who ordered to never seen Muhammed Hassan ever again! Hassan's character was not repackaged and he was soon released by the WWE (reportedly didn't have interest in being a wrestler, anyway?). This angle, in my opinion, was the biggest wrestling shitstain of the year.
Lots of wrestler cuts this year... Christy Hemme, fresh off of a year being in Playboy, was let go after her first year in the WWE. She just didn't pan out and you could see that from her miserable Wrestlemania 21 performance against Trish Stratus. She had great enthusiasm for the role, but just didn't pan out. Best of luck to her. So long Eugene.... I though it was a crime that Charlie Haas was released. Out of OVW, in my opinion, there wasn't a better pure wrestler than him. The WWE could have had a money feud with Haas chasing Benjamin's impressive Intercontinental Title reign, but didn't go for it (Benjamin has since been depushed for reported backstage problems with agents). Haas may have been a biproduct of his wife, Jackie Gayda, getting released. Jackie wasn't very receptive backstage and the WWE soon realized they could hire a bunch of Jackie Gayda's through their Diva Search contests (I mean seriously, Candice Michelle and Maria are doing very well on RAW). Dudleys were released with the WWE citing they had "nothing for them to do". Kidman battled injuries and just wasn't over, hence getting released. Many predict that Torrie Wilson will soon follow and some places reported rumors of her departure. Untrue, it was. Spike Dudley was released and spoke his mind about it afterward. At least he has a college degree and a former career to fall back on... Tajiri retired from the WWE, reportedly affected after Eddie Guerrero's death. I'm still sour on the Gail Kim release... Others were released to make up for the lost revenue of the cheaper USA Networks deal.
Poor Ric Flair... after a road rage incident, it was revealed that Natch's personal life was falling apart as well. His wife has filed for divorce after reported abuse and Flair abusing drugs/steroids. Being a fan of Flair's for almost 20 years now, I wish the guy the best and hope that he bounces back from these recent stems with the law. As you've read in Flair's book, the Nature Boy always lives life to its fullest. Hopefully, it's not fatal.
But one story will remain in our hearts, as fans, forever... the death of Eddie Guerrero. Since 2002, Eddie Guerrero has overcome his drug and alcohol problems and become an incredible performer. However, the years of drug and alcohol abuse caught up to Eddie as he died of heart failure. However, wrestling fans and wrestlers knew what Eddie had overcome and every wrestling fan mourned his loss. Fans still chant "Eddie" for Chavo matches and wrestlers were extremely emotional for his RAW and Smackdown tribute shows. He truly was a great performer and I'm proud to have become a fan of his since admiring his tag team work in 2002 with Chavo and since rooting for him to become champion. He will truly be missed.
Other mini-tidbits... Sting has returned to pro wrestling, but with NWA-TNA. He's signed a yearly contract for a reported $500,000. Sting has never worked for the WWE and appears to remain that way unless WWE gives into his limited dates request. The Women's Division finally kicked into high gear this year with the nice additions of non-wrestler divas beginning to manage women's wrestlers. For instance, Candice Michelle and Torrie Wilson start shit and let Victoria be their enforcer (to great success), while Ashley hung around Trish Stratus. It's getting all of the women over, as well as the division, for a change. They just need to keep adding women wrestlers, like Mickie James, and stick with the formula of hot chicks valeting hot chick wrestlers. Ohio Valley Wrestling is stockpiling on female wrestlers, so 2006 should be a strong year for that division. Carlito has come into his own... he's another Smackdown guy who jumped to RAW. He's a guy on the verge of winning too much support from fans as a heel, but we'll see if he turns face or not. Regardless, he's a star on the rise. Chris Masters had a slow development, but I believe he's got a lot of potential. He's made the Full Nelson legitimate again (and I like the way he locks the hands) and he's getting great opportunities. It's just a matter of him developing more as a wrestler and he'll be set. Many critics of his need to be a tad more patient (like Kid Kash, the WWE employee who ripped him publicly).
Ken Kennedy got a lot of early praise from when he was called up from the OVW roster, but he was soon injured to further build onto that. Randy Orton seems to be getting yet another early World Title push, as he's now booked to win the Royal Rumble and then defeat Batista at Wrestlemania 22. WWE has already planted early seeds of their feud on a few editions of Smackdown. At age 25 now, let's see if Orton pans out as champion AND can actually stay healthy enough to remain champion. At age 25, why rush? Most wrestlers are title ready during the later part of their 20's or early 30's. I really don't see the rush or demand for this push. Keep Kevin Nash and Ted Dibiase in your prayers or whatnot, as both have had health scares in 2005. Let's hope that both wrestling legends can bounce back. I really liked the WWE show from Afganistan. It seemed like it had a lot more heart this year than the previous 2 years. It's good PR that the WWE should strive for and retain instead of tearing it down with their many anti-American angles they attempt for cheap heat.
And from memory, that was the year that was 2005. Some ups and some downs... A fun year, though.
2005 Tito Awards
h1>2004 Tito Awards for the Best in WWE Wrestling
BEST WRESTLER = Shawn Michaels
Consistently good throughout the year. His matches with Kurt Angle were priceless and he brought great effort to any opponent he had (how about that Shelton Benjamin match?!?). He's the man!
BEST TAG TEAM = Kane and the Big Show
Weak year for tag team wrestling, though OVW is piecing together tag teams to promote to the main roster. But seriously, who can beat this team?
BEST CRUISERWEIGHT = Rey Mysterio
There's still a Cruiserweight division in the WWE?
BEST FEMALE WRESTLER = Victoria
Victoria brought it for most of the year (Trish was hurt), so hence the award. She's every bit as good as Stratus, and brings the surprising element of powermoves to the women's division. Who could have imagined that a Godfather Ho would take being a women's wrestler this seriously? She's perfect in her role as thug for Candice Michelle and Torrie Wilson.
MATCH OF THE YEAR = Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle, Wrestlemania 21
Incredible match that completely lived up to the hype... and then some. This was a dream match that the WWE, for once, listened to the fans and gave them. The hype was awesome, too, with Kurt Angle bringing back wrestlers or persons from HBK's past, even Marty Jannetty who could have had a WWE contract based on a great match with Angle... but he had to drink and drive.
PAY PER VIEW OF THE YEAR = Summerslam
Orton vs. Undertaker was the best of their series (Orton's best PPV match, in my opinion), HBK vs. Hogan, a good Cena vs. Jericho match, Benoit's fast USA Title win, and Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie was good. Wrestlemania 21, I thought, fell short on their main events, but had a better midcard.
MOST IMPROVED = Carlito
This guy seriously has a HUGE future with the WWE. He got better by the month, both with personality and wrestling ability. I doubted him back when he debuted in October of 2004, but I seriously eat my words and actually bought his Apple shirt from a recent houseshow.
BEST ROOKIE = Chris Masters
Not a big year for newcomers, but Masters seemed to hold up well in his slowly built up role and now as a partial main eventer. The slow build up, though, worked because it gave credibility to his Masterlock hold which always gets a crowd reaction. His wrestling skills are coming on. People need to realize he's still in his rookie year and look what he's accomplished. He has a better future from his debut that almost every Ohio Valley Wrestling students.
BEST MIC SKILLS = Shawn Michaels
Great on the mic all year, but the heel turn during Summerslam did it. He about had the Montreal fans ready to riot with his promo.
BEST ENTRANCE = Eddie Guerrero
Who else came out every week in a car? Eddie wins this award, once again. Chris Masters comes in at second.
BEST MANAGER/VALET = Candice Michelle
She's been effective on cheating for Victoria at ringside with her magic wand. Not many managers/valets used this year with the exception of the women's division.
COMEBACK OF THE YEAR = Hulk Hogan
Hogan left the WWE in 2003 after contractual disputes with Vince McMahon... he wasn't even part of Wrestlemania 20. Then, he flirted with TNA. Hogan, however, would get hit with the injury bug and be forced into various surgeries to repair old injuries. In 2005, Hogan made his WWE comeback and the fans were loud for him once again.
BEST FACE = Batista
Fans are booing him, unlike Cena. He's been consistently cheered throughout 2005, so hence the award.
BEST HEEL = Triple H
HHH was a little over-the-top this year on his heel attacks, but he's still the most despised guy on the roster... Carlito is close, but is sometimes more funny than he is cruel. HHH's character is just a total bastard.
That does it for this year's Year-In-Review column. I hope you have a great 2006!!! So just chill... till the next episode.
