Ridin’ With The Bossman DVD Reviews – Unforgiven The date is September 18, 2005. The Location is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A Raw Pay Per View took place that night. Not one of the big ones, one of the monthly ones. The Forgotten Ones. This PPV offered plenty thought. Ric Flair would challenge for the Intercontinental Title. Matt Hardy would face off against Edge in a Steel Cage. Kurt Angle would face John Cena for the WWE Championship. And plenty more. Packaging and Layout The cover of the DVD has two pictures side by side. Kurt Angle and John Cena. It boasts that a Gold Medalist will face the WWE Champion. The back of the DVD has a list of matches, and a collage of faces and a collage of heels. Once the main menu arrives, there are two pages of chapters, as there are plenty of skits mixed in with the matches. Matches 1) Ric Flair vs Carlito – 19:47 Intercontinental Championship Match Long match, and slow paced, but a solid outing. 2) Trish Stratus and Ashley Massaro vs Torrie Wilson and Victoria w/ Candace – 10:36 3) Big Show vs Gene Snitsky – 11:54 4) Shelton Benjamin vs Kerwin White (AKA Chavo) – 12:01 Actually shorter, as it takes a while for Chavo to get in the ring, since, at the time, he’s driving a golf cart. Match was solid once it started, but sadly, nothing spectacular. 5) Matt Hardy vs Edge – 29:29 Steel Cage Match A possible winner for Cage match with least amount of blood. Blood does start flowing, and heavy, but only nearly the end. Now, this was a good match, without the blood. A lot of intensity, a lot of brutality, and plenty of big bumps. This is the match where Matt Hardy performs a leg drop off the top of the cage onto Edge. 6) The Hurricane and Rosey vs Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch – 11:35 World Tag Team Championship Match 7) Shawn Michaels vs Chris Masters – 23:30 8) WWE Championship Promo – 4:25 Recap of vents that lead to the Main Event 9) John Cena vs Kurt Angle - 26:03 WWE Championship Match A solid match, but not that great. There are also a total of 8 skits, totaling 12:25. Most of the skits revolve around Ric Flair having sex in a limo (It’s true) with several women he picked up from ringside. Also, for the matches, shave off about three minutes front and back for wrestlers getting into and leaving the ring. Also, there’s a recap video at the end that goes for 2:15. While the show lasts 2:48:30, about 2 hours of it is actually wrestling, there’s plenty of non-wrestling filler. Special Features - 8 Man Tag From Raw 9-19-05 – 18:35 - Maria Interviews ZZ Top - :30 That’s it. Sights and Sounds The video production for the show is always top notch, and this PPV is no different. The graphics for the presentation for the matches have plenty of the wiz bang quality that WWE loves to use, in other words, lots of animation. The announce team is JR, King and Coach. Too many men all trying to talk at once is a common occurrence. Final Thoughts Unforgiven may rightly be considered a forgotten PPV. Nothing truly of note happened on this PPV. The biggest events are Ric won his first ever Intercontinental Championship. The leg drop from the top of the cage is also noteworthy. The tag titles do change hands, and the end of both tag teams happens soon afterward. Ric’s winning of the IC belt, well, he’s in a high profile feud with Triple H as of this writing, and they have mentioned the belt maybe twice. And the feud is in month two. Was the feud sparked by this match? No. Yes. I don’t know. But some how I doubt it. Maybe the many Ric skits had something to do with it. But again, I’m not sure. The Matt Hardy leg drop will be available on future compilation tapes of cage matches, or high light videos. Maybe. Angle and Cena is still going on as of the time of this writing. While this was their first match, they’ve had a few since then. Cena is still champ. The rest of the card, well, it’s just kind of there. Not a knock on the quality of the matches, but a knock on the meaning of the matches. This PPV is basically a Raw that you paid money for. It’s not commercial free, as there are several commercials, one right before the main event for WWE T-Shirts stands out in my mind. Then there are the usual plugs for the band that did the theme song, and so forth. For collectors, if you didn’t see it when it first aired, you can skip this one. In conclusion, Unforgiven was an episode of Raw that WWE charged you for. The show wasn’t so horrible that you’ll throw the DVD out the window in disgust. It wasn’t so good that it will take a prized place in your collection. It was a bland show, that two months from now, if you come across it in your collection, if you skim the back of the box, and you may think to yourself “ Oh that’s right! This is the show where HBK took on that muscle guy!”, not remembering that you’ve already seen it, and forgotten it. Which is why this DVD is just another piece of the Forgotten PPV legacy. If you’re looking for a gift to give your friends who like wrestling, this isn’t it. Save your money, tape Raw, and give that tape to them instead. That tape actually stands a better chance of meaning something more to wrestling history than Unforgiven.
