    The Smackdown! Report (10/28/05)

The show opened with a detailed recap of the Raw vs. SD feud, dating back to the Raw Homecoming. Once the recap was over, the camera cut to Christian, who was ready to begin the Peep Show. Rey Mysterio wasted no time in getting down to the ring, and he started what turned into an open “pick me” forum for the five superstars eligible to be voted to face Chris Masters and Edge at Taboo Tuesday. Mysterio quickly explained why the fans should choose him, but Matt Hardy came down soon after to explain why the fans should choose him. He gave a quick shout out to the net fans for getting him his job back, but was then interrupted by Hardcore Holly. Holly wants you to vote for him, too. So does JBL, who was the last to come to the ring. Finally, Christian was about to talk, but Teddy Long interrupted him and placed all five stars in a match.

Match 1: Matt Hardy vs. Christian vs. JBL vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Hardcore Holly
-In a move that the WWE is pulling more and more often these days, this match foolishly began DURING a commercial break. I hate it when they do that…anyhow, everyone was ganging up on JBL as we joined the match in progress. Holly and JBL then found themselves brawling on the outside while Mysterio and Hardy double-teamed Christian in the ring. Rey and Matt worked well together, pulling an old trick out of the Hardy Boyz’s book with Mysterio jumping off V1’s back and connecting with a leg lariat in the corner. Hardcore Holly then assumed control of the match with a dropkick to JBL and double clothesline on Mysterio and Hardy. Captain Charisma proceeded to sneak up and catch Holly with a falling reverse DDT. In the spot of the night, Hardy and Mysterio recovered in time to prevent Christian from trying a high risk move off the top rope, and looked to bring him crashing down to the mat with some tandem offense. However, JBL and Holly each got to their feet and executed powerbombs to Matt and Rey as they connected with a double superplex on Christian! The climax of the match came when Holly took out Layfield w/ the Alabama Slam. Christian then got drilled by Rey Mysterio’s 619. Bradshaw eventually gained momentum, hit Holly with the Clothesline from Hell, and caught Rey Rey with a Last Call Fallaway Slam before suffering an unfortunate Twist of Fate (I’m so happy Hardy is on SD). V1, in a rather unfortunate twist of fate of his own, then ended up falling victim to Christian’s Unprettier. The finish came soon after when Mysterio pinned Christian with a hurricanrana pin. (CMV1 rating- ** ¼). (CMV1 note- this whole segment could pretty much be summed up as being “fun.” First, it was good to hear all the superstars at least try to make Taboo Tuesday’s so called ultimate fan interaction seem legit by campaigning for your votes. Then, of course, the five-man match followed the opening segment nicely with a whole bunch of high spots to get the crowd popping. I enjoyed it…good stuff).

Backstage, United States Champion Booker T and his wife Sharmell walked into Teddy Long’s office, presumably at his request. TRL wanted to show Book the footage of Sharmell’s interference last week that led to the new champ getting the tainted victory over the former champ, Chris Benoit. Although Sharmell protested, Booker eventually did see the footage, and was not happy about it. They did a little verbal jousting, but eventually Booker laid down the law and told her she had to apologize to Benoit. He also said he’d give Benoit a rematch.

Further backstage, Roddy Piper and Bob Orton bumped into each other, prompting a quick little verbal interaction. Piper reminded Cowboy of how he brought him up to a main-event level back in the 80’s. Eventually, Randy Orton stepped in and ended all that talk. The Rowdy one told Randy that anymore evolution for him would have the Legend Killer walking around on all fours. (CMV1 note- Piper may not always be completely coherent, but he’s always entertaining. Randy, I like ya, buddy, but take notes on that guy).

Even further backstage, the ridiculous members of the soon to be relegated to Velocity or unemployment Junior division decided to mess around with Simon Dean.

Match 2: Junior Division match: Shortsleeve Sampson vs. Pitbull Patterson
-(CMV1 note- Yes! I’ve always wanted to see part of my four hour weekly wrestling habit feature midgets being made to look like absolute idiots! Please, sense the sarcasm). Sampson defeated Patterson with a body splash. (CMV1 rating- ¼ *) (CMV1 RANT- what an absolute waste of time…the rating for tonight’s show will go down as a result of this. I’ll tell ya, if they were actually booked competitively rather than being made to be unnecessary comic relief, then I’d be alright with this…some of these guys can actually do some fun looking wrestling. This is just stupid…and while I’m on the topic of stupid…Vince and Stephanie McMahon need to stay off of Raw, because they are truly hurting that show with their attempts to relieve 1998-1999. Oh, and in advance before I get ridiculous feedback about how I should realize how much Vince has done for the business…I don’t care, he and his fake chested daughter need to walk their asses back behind the scenes and stay there…oh, and if they could get some help once they are back there, while their at it…that’d be great…)

Back to serious business, Booker T and Sharmell came out to the ring, where the new US champ asked Chris Benoit to come to the ring. Benoit quickly obliged, and Book told him how great a friend he’d been to him over the years. He then demanded Sharmell apologize, despite Benoit telling them he didn’t care about apologies. Sharmell did give Benoit an apology, though (albeit a half-hearted one). In the process, Mrs. T also criticized her husband. Booker looked a little irked and Benoit, meanwhile, decided to turn around and leave. That proved to be a mistake for the Rabid Wolverine, as Booker slammed him in the back of the head with the US title belt. The former five-time WCW Champion then sent Benoit crashing onto the announce table with a pressing kick. (CMV1 note- I totally dug this segment because I honestly didn’t see that coming. I figured Book might turn pseudo-heel, but I didn’t expect a Benoit beat down to be a part of it. Good segment that gives us our first real US title feud that people will care about since Book last held the US title a year ago).

Match 3: WWE Tag Team Champions Animal and Heidenreich vs. MNM vs. Mexicools vs. Paul Birchall and William Regal
-(CMV1 note- I’ve actually been pretty pumped about this match all week. Unfortunately, I had a guest during this match so I didn’t really get a thorough recap of it…my apologies…). Early on the in the bout, MNM tried to hit a double suplex on Animal, but the Road Warrior reversed it and suplexed both of them. Eventually, the Mexicools got involved and Super Crazy hit a moonsault on Nitro. At that point, all four teams entered the ring and a melee ensued that took us to a dreaded mid-match commercial break, but I guess that was to be expected. Back from the break, Psicosis hit MNM (on the outside) with a nice corkscrew plancha. We then got more from the Mexicools and MNM, capped off by a Super Crazy back drop on Nitro that led to Regal getting a blind tag and attacking the Insane Luchadore from behind. Birchall then tagged in and connected with a fisherman’s DDT. Road Idiot Heidenreich eventually got the hot tag and cleaned house. In full control of the match, LOD 2005 went for the Doomsday Device to put it away, but the Tolands made their second appearance on SD and took out Animal. Meanwhile, MNM hit the Snapshot on Heidenreich to pick up the win. MNM defeated LOD 2005, Mexicools, and Regal/Birchall to become WWE Tag Team Champions. (CMV1 rating- ** ½) (CMV1 note- can you hear the singing from above, loyal CMV1 readers? Damn fine match and damn good to have champions that are worth a crap. MNM and the Mexicools now need to keep the small amount of momentum that the tag division has built recently and feud for the next few months. The crowd, by the way, was hot for the Mexicools again this week, so it’s obvious that there’s some justification behind pushing them. Meanwhile, LOD can go off and feud with the Tolands to actually build a more than two-team-at-a-time division).

Backstage, Nunzio and Big Vito approached Teddy Long about getting a tag team title shot (excellent, another tag team…I love it!) However, Long said they’d need to prove they can beat Lashley before they’d get a shot against the tag champions. Thus, he put them in a handicap match that’ll take place next week: Nunzio and Vito vs. Lashley. After the pseudo-FBI left, the Boogeyman popped out of the closet and cut another strange promo that was better than last week’s, but not as good as the one he debuted with.

Further backstage, World Heavyweight Champion Batista was talking with Eddie Guerrero about their match last week against Kennedy and Orton. Batista thanked Guerrero for taking the chair shot for him last week. He proceeded to remind everyone of how they were in the building where Eddie won the WWE Championship in 2004. Latino Heat thought out-loud about that night and how special it was…I remember, Eddie…Anyhow, the champ gave Guerrero a little surprise in the form of a lowrider.

Match 4: World Champion Batista, Eddie Guerrero, and Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Randy Orton, Cowboy Bob Orton, and Ken Kennedy
-(CMV1 note- Mis-terrrrrrrr Kenn-edy…Kennedy! Oh yeah, and Eddie came out to his old babyface music while in the lowrider with Batista riding shotgun). Guerrero and Kennedy started things off, and Eddie got first meaningful attack points with a hilo. He then tagged in Big Dave, who promptly called out Randy Orton. Orton accepted the challenge and the two had a quick brawl that ended with a Batista spinebuster. The champ wanted to go for the Batista Bomb, but the attempt was blocked, as the Legend Killer darted out of the ring. We then got a dreaded commercial break, but I guess that was to be expected. Back from the break, Randy was in control of Latino Heat. Eventually, Guerrero used a tilt-a-whirl head scissor to buy himself the time to get a hot tag to Roddy Piper. Upon entering the ring, Piper immediately did one of his classic moves: the two-fingered eye poke. The trip to 1985 continued when Cowboy Bob came in and clocked Roddy from behind. We finally came back to the future when Batista and Guerrero came in and welcomed us back to 2005. Latino Heat proceeded to connect with the Three Amigo vertical suplexes and the Frog Splash on Kennedy, allowing Piper to sneak up behind Cowboy and lock him in the sleeper hold for the submission victory. Batista, Piper, and Eddie defeated Orton, Orton, and Kennedy. (CMV1 rating- **) (CMV1 note- it was a sufficiently entertaining main-event all things considered).

All in all…Despite my mid-report rant, I have to admit that I thought this was another solid show, and that although it was not as good as its been in the last few weeks, it still had enough wrestling to keep me entertaining. The opening segment and subsequent match that followed, the Booker-Benoit feud, the tag team title match, and the main-event were all good TV in my opinion, so I can’t knock the show too much despite the outrageously stupid Junior division nonsense. So, this week’s show gets a 6/10, but will be hard pressed to continue such solid ratings if things like the Juniors are featured every week. In all honesty, that’s about the only thing I find wrong with this brand right now…everything else is solid as a rock…

This week in Smackdown history… Chris Benoit vs. Edge opened the show with a very good match, and Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero followed their lead with a helluva match later on in the night. Of course, this was the greatest period in WWE TV history for actual wrestling, as these two plus Chavo Guerrero and Rey Mysterio put on clinics night in and night out for a good four months. At the time, all six were involved in a feud over the recently created SD tag titles which culminated in a triple threat match for the belts at Survivor Series a few weeks later.
