Ridin’ With The Bossman DVD Review –Summerslam 2005

One of the big four of WWE PPV’s, Summerslam is traditionally the fall out from Wrestlemania. Now, it also known as one of the few PPV’s where both Raw and Smackdown share a PPV. Coming on the heels of the draft lottery, this is the first meeting of both brands since their titles switched. The date is August21, 2005. The scene is Washington DC. The event is Summerslam, the culmination of weeks of angles. Two titles on the line. The custody of one child hangs in the balance. Two legends meet for the first time ever. A grudge match born out of real life circumstances. Eight matches on the card, and jam-packed with action.

    Packaging and Layout

Hogan and Shawn Michaels are on the cover. Since they’re the main event for the PPV, it makes sense. On the back, HBK and Hogan are the big picture, while the two title match contestants are also featured, over the synopsis of the matches and offerings of the DVD. Inside, a one-page guide tells you what the DVD offers. Rather skimpy.

    DVD Offerings

Chris Benoit vs Orlando Jordan 6:51 – 10:45

    WWE United States Championship Match

    A quick match.

Eddie and his wife Vicki talk about Rey’s son Dominick and the upcoming match. 10:45 – 13:25

    Edge vs Matt Hardy 14:00 – 26:20

    Recap ends - 17:05

A brutal match, if one sided. The ending was weak, It was Matt Hardy’s first official match back after his firing.

Summerslam hype. Buy the CD 26:20 – 27:03

    Eddie vs Rey - 27:04 – 59:50

Ladder Match For the Custody of Dominick

    Recap ends - 31:00

A sloppy match. But the sloppiness adds to the overall brutality of this match, and Rey and Eddie keep going. A classic match between Eddie and Rey, as they pull out all the stops.

    Jericho Promo 59:51 – 1:01:54

Jericho reminds us he was Undisputed Champion.

    Angle vs Eugene 1:01:54 – 1:10:35

Miscue on Angles pyro. A solid match, and one that the crowd was into, start to finish. Angle’s Gold Medal on the line.

The Divas(in bikinis) wash a Limo and Vince thinks of running for President. 1:10:43 – 1:11:43

    Undertaker vs Orton 1:11:43 – 1:35:11

The gong sounds at 1:11:48. Undertaker enters the ring at 1:13:51. Orton’s music hits at 1:15:04. Randy enters the ring at 1:15:47. The bell sounds to start the match at 1:16:25. Orton and Undertaker lock up for the first time at 1:16:57. A solid match, if slow paced.

WWE says that they support both political parties, and that they are at the show. Only republicans are shown. 1:35:12 – 1:35:55.

    Jericho vs John Cena - 1:36:04 – 1:59:29

    WWE Championship Match

    Recap of feud - 1:36:06 – 1:39:15

Jericho enters the ring at 1:40:22. Cena enters the ring at 1:42:49. Match starts at 1:42:39. One of Cena’s best matches. Crowd was evenly divided, with dueling Jericho and Cena chants halfway through. Excellent match.

    Wrestlemania Promo 1:59:30 – 2:00:00

    Batista vs Bradshaw - 2:00:00 – 2:15:58

No Holds Barred World Heavyweight Championship Match

    Recap ends at 2:02:15

Bradshaw’s MOOsic starts at 2:02:15. JBL enters the ring at 2:03:15. Batista’s music hits at 2:04:12. He never makes it to the ring, at JBL goes out to meet him, and the match starts. A short match, but intense.

    Hulk Hogan vs Shawn Michaels - 2:16:10 – 2:48:18

    Recap ends at 2:20:09

A good match, and considering Hogan’s age and the length of the match, a great match. HBK does most, if not all of the work. Still, the emotional impact of Hogan cannot be denied. As memorable as Hogan vs Rock? Not in my opinion. As nostalgic as Rock vs Hogan II? Again, not in my opinion. Still, for HBK fans, a good match to have in your collection.

    Aftermath

Hogan and HBK shake hands at 2:50:28.

    Show ends at 2:53:08

    Extras

    - Shawn Michaels On the Larry Bling Show – 7:54

A parody of Larry King, with HBK as Hogan.

    - John Cena “Right Now” music video - 4:07

You can buy the CD, as the commercial after the video, which ends at 3:46, tells you.

    - The Next Night On Raw - 4:23

It’s not a match, as they only show the ending of the Chris Jericho vs John Cena Looser Leaves Raw match. Jericho looses, and is carried out and then Angle attacks Cena. I was looking forward to the match, as it was as good, if not better than the Summerslam Match.

    Final Thoughts

A top-notch PPV, that delivered upon weeks of building of storylines. The matches were excellent, each and everyone, with the exception of the US Title match and the Hardy beat down. Eight matches that went almost three hours. Even a match that when you stopped to think past the nostalgia, in Hogan vs HBK, delivered the goods.

A great ending to several feuds, and the start of two. It’s the real ending to Eddie vs Rey, and Angle vs Eugene also wraps up. Batista vs JBL also wraps up, in a solid fashion. It’s the start of the Undertaker vs Randy Orton, and his dad, and also the start of Benoit vs Orlando, and that one is still going as of this writing. Unfortunately, the start is the high point of that rivalry. The Edge – Hardy feud gets much better after this.

For collectors, the HBK vs Hogan match is the big selling point, but it’s also the penultimate match of Jericho, as he has one more, the next night on Raw, before he leaves.

Overall, an excellent PPV, and one worth adding to your collection.

    Grades
    DVD Score : A

    Audio Visual Score : B

Packaging and Layout: C (The cover is fine, but the interior is cheap)

Special Features : C (Next to nothing in the way of extras. There may be some hidden features, but they’re hidden and therefore don’t count)

Overall: A – (The PPV itself is the main selling point, and the extras and layout detract little)

    Until Next Time,

Thanks For Readin' and Thanks For Ridin'
