The Smackdown! Report (9/30/05)
The show opened with JBL coming out to the ring dressed like a stereotypical illegal immigrant, complete with sombrero, Mexican flag, and life preserving tube, while also drinking a bottle of Tequila and dragging a donkey behind him. “Como esta amigos,” said JBL. He proceeded to cut a promo about going over the Mexican border to visit Rey Mysterio’s family. The crowd was all over him, chanting what I assume is the Spanish word for asshole. JBL didn’t let up, though, and hated on all the Mexicans coming across the border without a green card. He said that all those people reminded him of a donkey’s ass. Ken Kennedy then came out and talked to the donkey as if it were Smackdown announcer Tony Chimel. He told “Chimel” how terrible he was at doing the ring introductions. This lead to…
Match 1: John “Bradshaw” Layfield and Ken Kennedy vs. Rey Mysterio and Hardcore Holly
-(CMV1 note- Mr. Kennedy did his usual in-ring intros, but this week he had a mic come down from the rafters to help him along…Kennedy…) The crowd went NUTS for Mysterio. Speaking of Rey, he struck first, but didn’t maintain his offense for long, as a distraction from JBL led to some momentum shifting action from the heels. Holly interfered, though, and got the tag. Hardcore then got in several chops and hit a suplex on JBL. Rey tagged back in, but immediately caught a Bradshaw big boot. Ken Kennedy came back in and found himself in 619 position not too long after. When Mysterio went for his patented move, though, JBL interfered and sent Rey to the outside, where Bradshaw choked him with the Mexican flag. Back in the ring, Layfield connected with a Fallaway slam and followed it up with a bearhug. Kennedy then got the tag and eventually fell victim to a wheelbarrow bulldog, allowing Mysterio to get the hot tag to Holly. Hardcore then cleaned house, knocked Kennedy out of the ring, and scored with a dropkick on JBL that was supposed to set up the Alabama Slam. However, Kennedy helped JBL escape from Holly’s finisher. The end came when Kennedy distracted Holly from the apron, allowing JBL to drill ole’ Sparkplug with the Clothesline from Hell when he turned around. JBL and Kennedy defeated Holly and Mysterio at 7:26. (CMV1 rating- * ¼). (CMV1 note- not bad, but pretty standard action with Rey playing the face-in-peril. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Kennedy’s first PPV opponent be Holly, who’s quite over right now and an underrated in-ring performer. That’d be a solid match, and while it wouldn’t do much for Kennedy to beat him, he still needs to be on the card in some capacity).
Tazz and Cole showed footage of last week’s events involving Guerrero and Batista, who by beating MNM have earned a tag team title shot tonight against LOD 2005.
Backstage, Eddie Guerrero was downing some Mexican food when World Heavyweight Champion Batista came in and advised him against it. Dave brought up last week and how Eddie was sick all during their tag match against MNM (until the end, of course)…Batista didn’t want that to happen tonight when the two faced the tag team champions. The champ then took Eddie’s food and ate it himself.
Match 2: Melina vs. Christy Hemme
-(CMV1 note- this match came about as a result of a scuffle outside of the arena. Christy drove in on a motorcycle, Melina didn’t like the noise, and the female M of MNM broke a nail trying to pay back the Playboy playmate for her auditory malfunction). Did I turn off the iron? Rutgers is beating the crap out of PITT right now…Oh yeah…Christy caught Melina with a nice roll-up from the top rope…Melina pinned Christy (CMV1 rating- ¼ *) (CMV1 note- rest assured…I did turn off the iron…). After the match, MNM nearly hit Hemme with the Snapshot, but LOD made the save. The guy who did the SD spoilers this week was right; Heidi does have very Papa Shango-like face paint. It looked stupid then…it looks stupid now…
Tazz and Cole rolled footage of last week’s events involving Randy Orton and Undertaker.
A hype video for the RAW Homecoming aired, featuring Triple H. (CMV1 note- just my opinion, but all signs point to Trips turning on Flair this week. I look forward to that feud…essentially, it’ll be a last hurrah for the Nature Boy, who I grew up watching in the old NWA).
Match 3: Cowboy Bob Orton vs. Undertaker
-(CMV1 note- prior to the match, Cowboy Orton cut a promo about how he could beat the Undertaker without his son’s help…well, this ought to be a nice barometer for how good the No Mercy handicap casket match will be…If Bob can still move around and bump, it ought to be pretty good. I’m sure Randy and Taker will handle the majority of the work, anyway, but it would be beneficial to the overall performance if Bob could do some stuff). Bob played the coward in early going, and tried his best to get in some effective offensive moves. Unfortunately for the WWE Hall of Famer, Taker no sold it all and did some of his classic stuff. The ref bumped about a minute-and-a-half into the bout, prompting Bob to take advantage and hit a low blow. Randy Orton then came out and helped his dad lay a beating on the Deadman. A “Randy sucks” chant broke out. When the ref came to, Bob made a cover, but Taker kicked out! Taker then went wild, connecting with a big boot and thwarting Randy’s attempt at an RKO. The finish came when Taker defeated Cowboy via Tombstone at 5:09. (CMV1 rating- *) (CMV1 note- much more entertaining than I thought it’d be, but it was unfortunately due to heavy interfere from Randy and not Bob’s surprising ability to bump).
Match 4: Bobby Lashley vs. A. Jobber
-The match was very short, and Lashley got the win via Dominator. (CMV1 rating- ¼ *) (CMV1 note- ). After the match, Simon Dean came out and offered one of his Simon System drinks to Lashley…but Bobby declined and spilt the drink all over the place. During the segment, Dean announced that he’d be facing Lashley at No Mercy.
The Peep Show made its return to Smackdown after a multi-week absence. Captain Charisma wasted little time in telling us that he thinks he deserves a US title shot after pinning Benoit a couple of weeks ago in tag team action. Booker T then showed that he listens to his spouse by coming out and demanding a US title shot of his own. Orlando Jordan then came out and talked about how he deserves a shot, too. (CMV1 note- why? You just lost 5 times to Benoit in the time it takes to watch the opening SD video). Christian decided to mirror my thoughts by cracking a very well-timed and all-too-true joke about how what OJ just said had taken longer than one of Jordan’s matches with Benoit. Smackdown GM Teddy Long then joined the fray and alerted the three superstars that he was going to allow Benoit to pick his own opponent for No Mercy. With that, he gave the guys a chance to prove themselves by booking a triple threat, which led to…
Match 5: Booker T vs. Christian vs. Orlando Jordan
-The climax of the match saw the three men connect with a sky high superplex-powerbomb combination. Book was the first to capitalize on the melee, hitting OJ with a crescent heel kick. He then performed the Spinaroonie and went for the axe kick on Christian, but Captain Charisma countered and went for the Unprettier. The finish came when Book countered Christian’s finisher and connected with a slingshot, only to have Jordan come from behind and roll him up for the three count. OJ pinned Booker at 7:40. (CMV1 rating- **) (CMV1 note- really good while it lasted). After the bout, United States Champion Chris Benoit came out and stared down all of his potential challengers. He went around to each one of them and gave them a look as if he was going to choose them to be his opponent at the October 9th PPV, but then decided that all of them would get a shot, as he chose to face the three of them in a Fatal Fourway match.
Backstage, TRL and network executive Palmer Cannon were hanging out when Vince McMahon showed up and asked Teddy what SD’s match on next week’s RAW Homecoming would be. Long said that it would involve Mysterio, Batista, JBL, Guerrero, Benoit, and Christian. (CMV1 note- nice to see Christian get thrown in there…if I were the WWE, I’d have him help Edge beat Matt Hardy, sparking a Hardy-Christian feud for Smackdown…of course, that’s assuming the plan is to have Edge beat Hardy)
Match 6: Eddie Guerrero and World Heavyweight Champion Batista vs. WWE Tag Team Champions Road Warrior Animal and Heidenreich
-(CMV1 note- don’t forget, titles were on the line in this one). The match unfortunately started during a commercial break, which is just unacceptable. Back from the break, Heidi was in control of Eddie. Both men made tags, leaving Animal in the ring with the “Animal” Batista. The two proceeded to lock up and show themselves as equal in pure strength. Animal then tried for a suplex, but Batista countered. Big Dave tried for a suplex of his own, but Road Warrior countered. The two then had a standoff before Animal caught Batista with a big boot. However, when he tried to follow it with an elbow drop, the champ moved out of the way. Eddie took the liberty of ending the strength testing and tagged himself in. Heidenreich did the same, and Guerrero eventually played the coward. He actually kissed Heidi’s boot, but as the ref got distracted, Eddie gave the non-Road Warrior tag champ a low-blow. Animal quickly tagged back in, though, and slammed Latino Heat to the mat. LOD 2005 then performed a double back elbow smash, which Heidi followed up with a sidewalk slam. “Eddie” chants broke out. Heidenreich locked in a Cobra Clutch before tagging in Animal, who nailed Guerrero with a powerslam for a near fall. Looking to put the match away, Animal called for the Doomsday Device, but when he got Eddie up on his shoulders, Latino Heat countered and flipped him in Heidi’s direction with a hurricanrana. Guerrero managed the semi-hot tag to Batista soon after. The champ cleaned house, hitting a spinebuster on Heidi and drilling Animal with a spear. Batista then caught Papa Shang…I mean Heidenreich with a weak looking sit-out powerbomb. 1…2…No! Animal broke up the count and saved the tag titles, but MNM showed up immediately after and clocked the champs with steel chairs. Eddie eventually grabbed a chair from Nitro and swung at Mercury. However, he missed and hit Batista. As Big Dave came to, Eddie tossed his chair to Mercury and played dead, causing Batista to annihilate the male M of MNM with a spinebuster and a chair shot. LOD 2005 defeated Batista and Guerrero via DQ at 11:03. (CMV1 rating- * ½) (CMV1 note- pretty decent main-event all things considered. I really don’t understand why the WWE is doing such a slow build to Guerrero-Batista. They really must assume that the fans think Eddie has bad intentions…but quite frankly, he’s just acting the way he did when he was a face…a face that, I might add, was as or more over than John Cena before they turned him. I guess this is just going to be a lengthy feud, but I don’t think it’s going to help sell No Mercy as a must-see PPV).
All in all…eh, it had it’s moments, but it just didn’t hold my attention in the same way that the first two weeks of Friday Night SD did. I’ll give it a 5.5/10 again, but this week that extra half a point above the medium is better deserved. There really wasn’t a lot of lengthy wrestling tonight, which hurt the overall show, as did the ho-hum build toward No Mercy. On the other hand, NM now has six matches signed for PPV. I think it’s looking pretty decent...Anyhow, not a very good night of wrestling, but then, it wasn’t supposed to be. It’s very obvious that the WWE’s sole focus right now is Monday Night Raw’s return to USA network
This week in Smackdown history… Five of the “Smackdown Six” put on a fantastic display of wrestling for fans around the world to marvel at. First, there was the classic No-DQ match between Eddie Guerrero and Edge. Their feud had been building since early August, and had spanned two PPVs already before they finally settled their differences with this encounter. Unfortunately, I don’t remember anything, but the ending, which saw Edge give Eddie an Impaler DDT off of a ladder for the victory. Then there was the main-event of that evening, featuring Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match (this can be seen on the Mysterio “619” DVD). It was only roughly nine-minutes in length, but the match contained such rapid-fire action that you couldn’t help but be thoroughly enthralled with it. Mysterio got the pin on Benoit to cap off a great night of free-TV wrestling.
