    WWE – Vengeance 2005

June 26, 2005. From the city of broken dreams and busted luck, comes Vengeance. The back of the DVD reads as thus. AS the cell comes down, all hell breaks loose in a match for the ages. Indeed, the match is one that few people saw, as it was the third match up in as many Raw PPV’s. Yet good things were said about this PPV, that I think many people skipped. From a timeline standpoint, the Draft had just gotten underway, and the first draft choice John Cena has come to Raw. In fact, this PPV takes place right in the middle of the draft. But that was a TV story and this is a PPV. So, what does this PPV on DVD have to offer?

    Packaging and Layout

The cover makes no bones about what it thinks you’re buying the DVD for. Hell In A Cell. Batista vs. Triple H. Batista and Triple H are having a stare down on the cover, and the shot is made to look like it’s through the mesh of the cage. The back of the DVD tells you what matches take place, with some thumbnail photos. Once the DVD starts, the ads are easy to skim through. The menu is well laid out, and easy to use.

Let’s take a look at the matches.

    Intercontinental Championship - 16:05

    Carlito vs. Shelton Benjamin

One minute recap of last match before this one. Good match, not outstanding. Solid overall match. Post match footage is of H arriving with security and Ric Flair and a shot of the cell hanging over the ring.

Christy Hemme vs. Victoria – 7:45

One minute recap before match starts. Fair enough match.

Todd Pissham Interviews John Cena – 2:40

It’s actually Todd Grisham, but the joke is in the promo.

    Kane vs. Edge – 18:43

4:35 recap of feud before match starts. Intense match. Lots of brutality. A good end to the feud. After the match, highlights of Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels from Wrestlemania 21 to set up the next match. But first:

Todd Grisham Interviews HBK – 1:07

    Vengeance will be HBK’s.

Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels 31:46

Excellent match, thought their one at Wrestlemania was better. Still, a great match and worth the price of this DVD, if on sale.

Jonathon Coachman Interviews Batista – 2:00

    Triple H makes an appearance

    Lillian Garcia and Viscera 14:01

It drags on forever. Lillian sings to Viscera. But thankfully, the Godfather makes a welcome return. That is worth the price of the DVD.

    WWE Championship Match – 24:55

    Jericho vs. Christian vs. Jericho

Excellent match. Plenty of solid action.

    Road Warriors Commercial - :47

    Hell In A Cell – 39:53

    World Heavyweight Championship Match

    Triple H vs. Batista

4:30 recap of feud. H’s music starts at 4:45. He actually enters the ring at 6:12. Batista’s music hits at 7:22. Batista gets in the ring at 8:22. Cell touches the ground at 10:00. Match starts at 10:22.

    PPV Recap 2:10

Basically a music video for the theme song of the PPV.

    Special Features

    Vengeance Press Conference 6/21/05 14:45

Not a bad special feature. Bischoff was gold. Standard promos, only in front of a podium. No question and answer, more of just statements being read. Batista, John Cena, Triple H, Edge and Lita, Christy Hemme, and Vince all made statements.

    Maria Interviews Lillian – 1:15

Apparently happens after Vis dumps Lillian. It’s a treat for those who love cheese, but it’s clear why the WWE didn’t air this interview.

Christian and Jericho Argue After Losing The Match - 1:31

Seriously, that’s what it’s called. Aside from giving away the ending of the match, this is just a Raw skit added to the PPV for filler. It does set up another special feature however.

    Triple H Leaves The Ring - 2:08

I’m not sure why this was included on the DVD. Triple H staggers and listens to the crowd not really sound off on him one way or the other. Once he leaves the ring, they do cheer. I guess it’s to show he’s injured to explain his lack of current TV time, as of this writing.

    Post Hell In A Cell - 2:24

H is sitting in his locker room and Batista comes in and hugs him. That is all.

    RAW Match From 6/27/05

John Cena, Shawn Michaels, and Hulk Hogan vs. Christian, Jericho, and Tyson Tomko

A Raw match added to fill out the special features. It was a good match, with plenty of nostalgia going for Hogan. Still, it was something you’ve seen before, if you watch the show. match ends at 13:32, but the posing goes on for a good five minutes.

    Final Thoughts

Another PPV I did not see the first time around. I think a lot of people missed this one as well. But this was a better than average quality PPV, with some truly memorable matches. For a collector, this is one to add. It happened at an important time in WWE history, as this was before the Draft Lottery was finalized. It was one of Batista’s last matches on Raw. Hogan was making his comeback. Triple H soon vanished from TV after this match. So, for collection purposes, it’s a good pick up.

The special features aren’t that special, as the bonus match isn’t unique, but one that was on TV. Recently. The press conference is interesting, but it’s like all WWE press conferences, where they simply use them to build for the matches, and don’t answer questions. The extra interviews were clearly cut for a reason, or filmed on purpose to put on the DVD. And they add little to the value of the DVD.

Still, it was a sleeper of a PVP, and a sleeper DVD that would make a nice gift. If the price is right.
